Ok in response to some other posts and the OP, I just did Vana on Elite and I got a little over 50 radiant crystals, then 15 for the achievement. This was GREAT. So it is possible to get tons of crystals. However I don't really want to have to do Vana on elite everyday... I guess it is not as impossible to get crystals as I thought.

OOO doesn't need to fix something that isn't broken.
Just play the arcade like everyone else and stop trying to grind on stuff. And also, please give consideration in gate construction. Someone's prediction about a blizzard coming our way was dead on true...

Just failed forging four
Just failed forging four times in a row even though it said 70%.
Anyway, getting 4* items to level 10 is an incredible pain. Those 4* fire crystals only seem to appear on stratum 5 and in incredibly low numbers.

The forge is an infuriating but necessary update
I think we can all agree that the forge is a massive pain in the rear to have to use, however, it is outweighed by the massive benefit we get from free elevators. I actually quit for a while because the game was no fun anymore, it was just a drag because if i wanted to play the game continuously, I had to be grinding FSC the whole time JUST TO PLAY THE GAME. With free elevators, players can now do anything they damn well want to without having to worry about buying energy/elevator passes and thus the game experience as a whole becomes more enjoyable. Now, back to the point. With the removal of elevator costs, OOO needed something else for the players to sink their money into, because that is how a business works, after all. Without something for us to spend on, the devs would start losing money on the game and would have to shut it down. So, what key mechanic of the game do they need to change that everyone has to use and people will spend money on so that they can continue making and hosting Spiral Knights? Crafting. Crafting is something absolutely everyone has to do, its the key of every MMO, getting better and cooler looking gear so that you will be the best looking, most accomplished looking player around. People who used to want to play more can with free elevators, but since crafting is harder, they either have to play a LOT more or pay money to get that all important better gear. The old system made it almost impossible for a free player to get 5* gear, and P2Pers could craft up their gear, but it still took a while to heat. The forge brings balance to this by allowing everyone access to work based crafting, the ability to craft up because of how much you've played whether F2P or not within a fairly reasonable time span. With the option to pay for fire crystals, people who want to better their gear faster can either use energy they have worked for in game or bought with their real life cash can do so. Battle sprites, though not so much as the forge, are also a good money maker for OOO and they get people wanting to play more so that not only can they level up their gear, but also their new pet. Should the forge have been more fair and truthful in it's success rate percentages? Yes. Should it have been more well thought out with better design so that it wouldn't be as much as a nightmare to the players as it is now? Most definitely. But could the game have free elevators and continued development without it? Probably not. In the end, its a pain to use, but it keeps the game alive and keeps difficulty around for F2Pers AND P2Pers.

I don't know why people are getting so worked up... yeah the forge is a little bit annoying and sometimes finding crystals can be a pain but it's still nothing to go homicidal about. Even with the forge I enjoy the alchemy part of crafting more now, as the orbs make it much more friendly to higher tier crafters since I seem to find orbs of alchemy a lot and don't have to pay as much cr as I did to buy CE with the old system. To me the good things outweigh the bad.

I agree that the amount of
I agree that the amount of crystals for 100% forge should be reduced. My combuster is lvl 8 and I want to do a 100% forge because I don't want to take a risk. I have 79 radiant crystals and it's still not enough..
Also, I think that the requirement of heating a 4 star weapon to lvl 10 before upgrading it should be decreased to lvl 5..
