As the title says. I use both guns and swords, but I dislike shooting Kats because they constantly fly across the screen, and I'd prefer to sword them. But which of the Ele swords is best against them?
Which Elemental Sword for Kats?
Argent peacemaker works rather well against them, compared to alchemers. Found that out when I was heating it during the black kat event.
Divine avenger works great for me. The wide swings lets me clip them as they fly toward me. With a bit of asi, the second swing can hit them as they charge past you. Timing helps, and knowing how wide the real range of the swing is. The range actually covers around your knights little more than what it shows. Meaning that if you are right up against each other, it will hit.
The Rocket Hammer is the perfect anti-Kat weapon if you have it. With enough practice, you can dash concurrently with one as it slides away from you and paste its remains to the wall.
I like wide strokes against kats. You have a decent chance of hitting multiple targets. So I agree that Divine Avenger and Warmaster Rocket Hammer have an advantage here. But then the elemental brandishes work well too.
Like Orbs said, dashing with a kat using the WRH is a great option for instantly murdering kats (and anything else). I prefer heavy swords, and if you learn to time it you can hit a kat as it dashes past you and also cancel it when it stops to attack. For this, Divine Avenger is perfect.
Also consider Voltedge. Kats are highly resistant to freeze and fire, but have a major weakness to shock. Shock all but renders them unable to do anything at all.
Wait, so Kats (and probably other monsters) can have natural non-total-resistance status resistances? I always though they were just immune to some and the rest affected them equally (with the exception of status-themed monsters of course). Where do people like me read into this? The wiki monster family articles don't seem to mention natural "species resistances" so much (at least I think, wiki editors i.e. Bopp feel free to correct me :) ).
If you look at the wiki page for Ash of Agni, you'll see that its fire affects different monsters quite differently, even within a monster family. For more detail, see the recent discussion over here. We talk about it nonchalantly, as if it's obvious to everyone, because that makes us feel big.
I have a very sketchy chart of it here that has a lot of holes in it.
It's been known for a while that some monsters have varying amount of resistances, and like Bopp said it's most easily observable by setting things on fire and seeing different damage numbers. Status jellies, for instance, are immune to stagger storm but not stun in general. Darkfire Vanaduke is immune to shivermist buster. This puts them at probably 6.5 resistance.
Combuster is great for everything except for distant turrets, T3 Ash Tails, Toxoils, and Vog knights with Normal Max Elmntl Max Fire Max on both pieces and two hp pentas. Get one.
Correction: Combuster can take care of Wolvers as it partially deals normal damage and inflicts fire.
Follow a kat as it dashes. Once it stops, begin madly swinging at it with the glacius. If you land a 3-hit combo, you'll interrupt it, and it won't attack dash again for a few more seconds, allowing you to land another combo. Repeat until it's dead. Kats will literally just sit there doing nothing as you combo them to death. Seems to work even on elite with 4 players.
The reason I say glacius rather than combuster / voltedge is that the charge attack can also sometimes be useful for freezing them in place, which lets you kill them a lot faster than a weak DoT would.
From my experience kats can't fly out of EV or GV aka vortex bombs. Baiting kats to charge into a vortex is GG especially if you have party members ready to slice the trapped kats.
Indeed, however I felt is was necessary to enlighten those with kat troubles since this discussion is also about kats.
The key is to hit them when they aren't flying around, really.
