Why are they fighting each other? This is a new development.
The Apocrean slipped into the shadows and watched the two humans duke it out.
The Swarm was not aware that the Apocrean was still visible...
Jurak hid a miniature smile underneath his mechanized jaw, his odd new companion sounded just like his neice when he used to go to the store.
"hurry up then"
He said, in a half-hearted snarl
"Im meetin' up with the order fer a mission of some sort"
He explained, waiting on the platform.
"You?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nappy had fallen into a deep sleep on the makeshift tent, half out of exhaustion, half due to being thrown onto it by the hulking man. Though this dream was different, lucid even. He stood above himself watching himself sleep, looking over he could see deadman still fighting a spiral. He could see wisps flying about, many of them gathering around the man who had tossed him into this dream, surround him and his chair.
Though his questions echoed, he appeared silent as no one could hear him, even when he was right in front of them.
In the distant shadows, he saw a figure. A tall black figure, like he had never seen before. As he slowly walked up to it, the lights dimmed, his vision narrowed, the whispers grew louder. The wisps had been avoiding the area entirely, leaving Nappy and the unaware creature alone. He walked to the creatures back, outstretching his arm out to see what it was. Closer and closer until he finally came within reach.Laying a hand on it, Nappys mind was flooded with a thousand unkown voices each with it's own warnings and whispers. He was surrounded in the wisps, as they took shape of various knights, all of them pulling him away, putting themselves between nappy and the creature. As the creature turned around, it's shadowed face turning to Nappy. It's eyes opened with a bright crimson.
"GAH!"
Nappy yelped waking up from another dream he couldn't remember. Covered in sweat, one thing was clear, it was another nightmare. He missed the days when sleeping was as easy as closing your eyes and forgetting the world.
"YES! COME AT ME LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!"
Skotino yelled, his ethereal voice seeming to come from more then one direction. With a quick turn he held up the blade's Sheath slowly turning it down to his left side as the blade it it. For a moment Skotino started to laugh rather loudly like he was enjoying himself, but anyone who knew him saw right threw this laugh.
As the blade was being turned on the Sheath, the hissing sound of Skotino's Acheron came to life as it aimed to cut at the exposed side of Matthew. Thou it was quick Skotino knew well that it was easy to dodge out of. Yet he was kind of hoping this would happen. For the Acheron had one nasty trick that made it such a feared weapon to use outside of the mind altering abilities.
"Tell me boy, has your mental hold on reaility snapped yet? Can you see the world around you? Dancing mad just like your mind? Do you see it!
As Skotino spoke the world started to become a mad-house of color's around Matthew. Visions would have started to seem real and even Skotino's madness would have seemed like pure sanity. It was turning into a battle of mad-men with no victor, yet Skotino knew full well he himself was on a time limit for a second reason.
"Come on boy, show me your madness."
Gwen giggled. You're too cute for your own good. "Oh, I'm just here to collect some samples and deposit some chemicals in odd places. You know, alchemical stuff." She balanced on her toes playfully and added, "If we're going to the same place, would you object to my accompanying you?"
"Lass, I'm nearly three centries old, i'm missing my jaw, arm, most of my teeth, and they're sending me to fight a war. Do ye really think it matters if I object any more?"
He said, focusing on a pressure gauge on his left arm and making a few adjustments. He looked over at Gwen
"but if ye really wanna come, there are three things I wanna know"
He said, readjusting his footing.
"First, do you have anything in that satchel o' yers fer joint pain?"
He said inquisitively
"Second, are you hungry"
He asked quietly, and quickly added
"Third what happened to yer hair? They have ya testin' bleach bombs?"
Jurak chuckled, trying to cover up his concern for the girl and his second question with a mild insult.
Matthew leaped backwards, landing on the ground. Spinning his body around, he used his momentum to dash towards the Commander once again. Just before swinging, Matthew stopped moving completely, and began falling backwards. Turning his body, he lined up a kick, aimed for Skotino's head. He rolled away from his opponent.
Did I hit him?
Doesn't matter. Hit him again.
Picking himself up in the same fashion as before, Matthew feinted his attacks twice before swinging three times consecutively.
Gwen covered her mouth and giggled again. "I'm not particularly hungry, and no, my hair wasn't bleached, silly! It's a rare genetic trait, from what I've gathered. And as for your first question..." She fished around in her satchel until she found a tiny pill. "Here. Try this."
((It's a remedy capsule.))
Skotino laughed as he was hit, yet did not seem too phased by what was going on. Taking the kick full on getting his head rolled back as the brace of the impact set in. Remaining still he laughed once more, but this time it sounded, wrong.
Reaching up Skotino grabbed the arm of Matthew and bringing him face to face. Skotino's eyes would have looked like they where spinning voids of Crimson light.
"Hay, let me ask you something. Where are you aiming?"
With that said Skotino's body seemed to fade away, leaving behind a small shard of Dark Matter where he once stood. From behind Skotino started to laugh once more, his Ethereal voice rank like the haunting call of the Kats. Holding up his Acheron Skotino pointed it at Matthew, and with a smile he let lose an explosive wave of Shadow Energy.
"You know, you seem like a smart lad. Let me tell you something interesting."
Skotino said as he lowered the weapon, clearly his attack was not meant to be fatile in the least bit.
"Do you know why I can control this Acheron? Well first off I have a stronger mind then normal people, other wise I would have gone crazy like you are. Secondly I suffer from a mental sickness that makes me see things that arn't there...yet they are."
As if to make is point clear an unseen hand came across Matthew's face, it would have felt like it was balled up into a fist. The feeling of Dark Matter energy could have been felt in the area as it happened.
"And finally, there is liquid Dark Matter in my DNA. You see, I experimented on myself the effects of Dark Matter in order to keep inocent people like you from suffering it's wrath. But then again, who cares right? I mean its not like I am crazy right? I mean if I was sane would I be doing this? No."
His voice shifted back to a normal talking tone as he looked at Matthew directly.
"It's our Madness that makes us strong. But declining our madness makes us weak. Embrace what you are kid, because down there something far worse wants to take your mind over for it's own. Trust your Madness kid, because down there, sane people die."
"Trust your Madness kid, because down there, sane people die."
After being dropped to the ground, Matthew's katana fell from his grip. His pupils were visible again, but the whites of his eyes were yellow, and bloodshot.
"I've been feeling pretty dead ever since I went crazy."
Saying that, Matthew laughed without humor in his tone. His muscles ached. Full recovery took five minutes. He had had a friend test that. Friends...
Matthew looked down to the ground. He hadn't thought about his friends at all since the start of this. He... forgot to say goodbye. He took a deep breath, before closing his eyes, and standing up.
"Insanity's all we have down there. Right."
Matthew sheathed his katana. His eyes took their usual shape, tired and sore.
All we have.
"Hold on ! i am coming.. *cough* .. to help you ! " Ark said while holding his pain. He then created a forcefeild around gradus , then a pepper kat opened his mouth. Ark realise something , the enemy is using the element of heat like himself. He then think of a quick plan " Alright their attack will not hurt as much as before cause their fire will heal me insteas. However with my weak membrance this still will hurt. Also i can't use my happy go burn everything down tactic.. Seems like this guy also resist fire. Ok i need to rally to my poison side now.. "
then his force feild began to dissolve to something that seems to be a cloud of poison around him. He then shot parts of the cloud around the monster. " alright i think you guys will not like poison as much as me so , you might wanna back off from me for a bit ! " ark warn the other. He then stomped the ground creating poison mist to came out of the ground around the monster..
Alexander came to, finidng a large hulk of robot pinned against his body. Wondering how this transpired, he coughed roughly from some of the damage and winding caused from the impact. He turned his head up, to see a conflict breaking out, with an array of undead swarming up the halls. The Ranger sighed, as he loaded a round into his rifle.
"You want cover? Fine by me".
The Ranger looked down the sights of his rifle, breathing in slightly as much as he could with a heap of scrap on his back. He lined up a shot down the hallway, on level with as many monsters as possible. As he was about to pull the trigger, delivering judgement to the undead horde, a brief cloud of toxic emission rolled into his face at the ground level. Squinting and distracted, his line of fire wavered, yet the trigger was still pulled. The round seperated a few slags from their bodies, their nimble frames crumbling. A couple of Kats, including the one the slime was engaged with wailed as they died from the holy bullet. But a large entrance & exit wound could be seen gaping through the top left of the Slime that had travelled down with them.
As Alexander cleared his eyes, and re-focussed on where his shot had landed, all he could do was utter a short phrase used by the Rangers when things didn't go to plan as much as they had wanted.
"...Aww Voltails...".
" Arrghhh ! *Breaths heavily* ok , you are fine just need to regenerate ... * cough * * Sigh* should have stayed at the royal jelly palace." ark said while sobbing lightly. " If i am going down , i will at least help my ally " Ark tune suddenly turned to encouraged.
He switched the posion to his normal energy sheild then stomped the ground. Then lots of barbs.. no Spikes were coming from the ground impaling some slag walkers and pepperkat. The spikes created somekind of forest in the area.
" Urgh... * cough * That is all my energy * breaths heavily * i will rest here for ... a... bit.... * falls to sleep * "...
As the elevator stopped at thier first floor, Jurak looked around, and immediatly began to rub his temples from the headache.
[DEPTH 19 TREASURE VAULT]
"Just what I needed, conffeti all over my gear"
He said angrily
"Look around, see if there's anything of use we can take before we advance, but please hurry, I hate this place"
Jurak said to Gwen as he began to shuffle of the lift
As Skotino put his Acheron away it gove off one final hiss, sounding as if it was angry or dissappointed about something. Turing around Skotino stepped on the elevator Gate 3. The rest of his guard as well as Daud got on, all of the men making one final check to see if there suits were sealed correctly before going down.
"Your right, its all we got down there."
With that said Gate 3 slid down into the darkness as the elevator's Safety gates came up and closed off the opened Platform. Just as this happened Gate 4 Returned and more Knights pilled on with Supply crates and the like. The Head-Warden looked at Matthew for a moment as he walked back to his chair.
"Are you getting on this elevator, or are you going to rest for a bit?" The first time the Monster among men sounded human.
Nappy stood up from his tent and regained his spot at elevator two, eyes red from lack of (good) sleep. looking over to the other platforms, he still saw the spiral talkin' to deadman.
"Hey Deadman! Last one to the randezvous point buys!"
He shouted, stepping onto his platform, accompanied by two cobalt knights and a guardian. Time to get this nightmare over with
Gwen sighed, straightened her dress, and stepped into the Treasure Vault. "Hey Jurak, I'm gonna meet someone here. I shouldn't be long; I'll be at the elevator in a jiffy." She withdrew her vial of anti-fire potion and darted down one of the pathways. About a quarter mile in, she spotted her contact.
An Apocrean.
Hello, Gwen. You brought the vial?
"Yeah. I have it here." She handed it over, and the Apocrean bowed.
We are indebted to you.
"Not at all. I gotta go."
With that, she started for the elevator, and the Apocrean vanished into the shadows.
Gradus finished the last of his improvised chanting. A tremendous effect occurred:
The earth seemed to bubble, like a volcano peeking its head out before the mayhem has begun. In the center of the group, a spike in the ground appeared, and began to steadily climb. A Kat dashed into it and slowly flew away, stunned. The top of the spike split, as a wave of soft golden light washed over the entire group and climbed out another few feet. Almost instantly, the light changed to a dusky red hue, and the Gremlin symbol changed to that of a distorted eye, red and black. The air seemed to darken a bit, then the circle reverted to golden, the symbol switching back.
Interesting.
Gradus's sore joints and aches began to fade in small clusters. The bruise on his elbow, the ringing in his ear from the bombardment, the splinters in his legs, all ceased to scream out pain.
"This circle should last fer a few minutes, and I c'n move it, but slow like a Lumber. It should last til we get to the elevator. Me map here says it's that ways." The restorative rune began to slowly slide towards where the terminal was located, a few dozen feet around the corner. Gradus swapped his wand for his Iron Slug, and fired as fast as he could, missing most of the time.
"Didja really haf to shoot the Slime too?" It was slowly being rejuvenated by the healing rune, but it would take quite some time to regain consciousness. Wait, are slimes even conscious?
Getting distracted again.
Gradus knew that they couldn't very well abandon the Toxilargo after it had saved their hides. He thus immediately proceeded to push against it in the direction of the rune's path while shooting at any monsters that came too close. Undignified, and slime was a pain to get out of clothing.
"We're almost there! Jus' around the corner, and a few more steps!"
He had no idea about what was hiding there for them. ((The Slag Deadnaught.))
"Hold on there youth! Com'ere an help me out with this"
Jurak barked to Gwen, waving her down. He appeared to be attaching a mechanical device to a large boulder
"Hand me hammer over here will ya?"
He said, outstretching his arm expectantly
Gwen smiled warmly and handed him his hammer. Considering his great age and his gremlin race, she figured that he might know a great deal about the Clockworks. No harm in trying to uncomplicate the mechanical monster they live on, eh?
"You seem like you've worked with the Clockworks an awfully long time. Is the whole thing linked together? Like, are spike traps somehow linked to the rotation of the habitation domes?" She knelt beside him and rested an arm on one knee, looking at him expectantly.
Carefully embedding the device into the rock, he answered the girl between his labored breaths
"There was someone -Thwack!- like you once, Ratchel was her name -Thwack!- was her life goal to decipher this place-Thwack!-"
Stopping momentarliy to examine the device, and catch his breath, he looked Gwen in the eyes.
"She was also my neice"
He said, taking a step back to prepare for the final blow
"She figured out wonders the Order had only guessed at; When the layers change, how long it takes for them to return, even made a journal about all the creatures she encountered."
Raising his hammer over his head, Gwen asked the Inevitable question
"Where is she now?"
The inquizitive voice asked him. After all these years, the answer still hurt him. on the verge of tears, he responded
"She's dead" -Thwack!-
He laid down his hammer, and wiped the sweat from his forehead
"There's a reason why we dont investigate anymore, why we're still waging a war on this planet."
looking up, it was apparent he was lost in long forgotten memories, as a fire burned in his eyes
"We hate them, and they hate us. If you..."
Trailing off as his rage and grief started to show after years of buring it
" If you try to change that, they find you belly up, gutshot in the ditch. They dont care if you're young and sweet, or innocent. They don't CARE"
Tears streaming down his face, Jurak had all but forgotten that anyone had been listening at all. He had said this to himself a thousand times over, alone. That is untill he looked over to the girl still listening. He ashamedly wiped his face and grabbed his Hammer.
"So no. I don't know much about this place. Just enough to hate it, and how to keep it running"
He said, walking to the exit. The confetti fell all around him unnoticed, to be left behind, like shattered dreams he once had
"I just wish people would take the trouble to understand each other," Gwen mused. "Because when nobody tries, all we're left with is the ignorant hate. We fight and fight and fight and never really know why. And until they do, we don't care, either. All we know or care is that someone's shooting at us, so we have to shoot back. That's how creatures justify massacring each other without batting an eyelid - it's all in self-defense, you see. It's disgusting."
She wrapped her arms around her knees and continued. "It's even worse if the others are different. Like the Swarm. The Swarm is so different from the Knights that nobody has bothered to try and understand it. They don't try to understand why it infects and corrupts people; they don't try to understand why it fights back against our attacks; they don't try to understand how it thinks. They just see the infection and think, 'oh, it's an attack! I need to defend myself.' They don't stop to consider anything else."
She knew she was taking a risk defending the Swarm, but it was certainly relevant.
"Are you getting on this elevator, or are you going to rest for a bit?"
Even with a calm voice, one couldn't help but still be intimidated by someone who stood so tall. Matthew clenched his fist. His wound ached. The Vitasuit was doing it's best reducing the pain, and healing, but the Dark Energy certainly was doing something that hurt.
I guess I have to, don't I?
Yes.
"I'll go with this group down." Saying that, Matthew began staggering over to Gate Four's elevator.
[Depth 23: Clockworks Terminal; Entrance to the Shadow-Layer]
The Head-Warden looked at Matthew for a moment. It was long enough to get a clear glance at the boy, clear to see his nerves where taking him down a peg. Getting up the Head-Warden walked to the small knights side., the Gate 4 Elevator's safety rails still engaged.
"Take this, Elite Defender Matthew." The Head-Warden held out what looked like a Canteen. "Inside you will find something more helpful then my brothers charge's Insanity. But do not open it unless you must, for what is inside will attract the Swarm like a wolver to light."
The Head-Warden looked back at the Elevator as the chains started to lock up, before they did he held up his free hand, his right hand. The Gate 4 Key lifted up and pointed at a lock that was starting too form. As if by command the Chains lowered and the Safety Rails fell down allowing people to enter the Platform once more.
"Take this gift, and maybe you can safe your self from the darkness below."
The repressed memories were flooding in, he had been tasked with defending the poor girl after her parents had died. he could've maade her stay, make her wait a few days before she left...but he didn't. All this time, and thats what never changed, He didn't.
Gwen might've been talking to him, a kelptolisk might've stolen his remedy capsule, the world could be on fire, jurak didnt care. Not now, not until he could leave these memories behind, deep within the vault.
Looking back, he saw sorrow in the girls eyes, whatever she had been talking about must've been hard to face as well. Yet there was more to it then despair, a faint glimmer of hope as well. He had seen those eyes before, the last time he said goodbye to his neice, she had the exact same look. He couldn't change the past, or save Ratchel, no one could. But he could treasure the present, and those who were with him today.
"Comon youth, we 'avn't got all day"
Jurak uttered in a gruff voice
"We've got a job to do; ain't nothing these old memories gonna do to help us"
He said, stepping onto the elevators platform
"'We all 'ave our scars"
Gwen nodded and stepped onto the elevator platform. Was he even listening to me?
We thought he was.
I didn't think so.
Next stop: Danger
As the elevator grinded to a halt, Jurak and Gwen were greeted by a city in shambles.
[Depth 20: Candlestick Keep: Burning Blackout]
"This must be where that payload went"
Jurak snikered, admiring Gremlin engineering at it's finest. Stepping off the platform, a disticnt lack of sound, enimies, or architecture reinforced the idea that a squad was here not too long ago.
"And i'll bet they. are the ones who called it in"
Gesturing to the raggedy group of survivors in the distance
"Comon lass, the're near a treasure trove of sorts, and there's bound to be a watchdog"
Jurak said, keeping a watchful eye on the piles of ash around him
Robo N8 started to crackle electricity for the arms being off and his blue eye turned to yellow with a caution warning on it. "Crack, crack, crackle"
[Depth 20: Candlestick Keep, Burning Blackout]
Even thou the creature's who normally walked around in the Keep where currently hiding in fear, a feat no many where able to do, the Grimelkin where still all the hunt, if not more so for the ones who destroyed there beloved home of haunting. With a ghostly moan they came to life, in numbers now, to hunt down the new intruders. With the belief they where the ones who called down the bombardment.
A hissing was heard as a Grimelkin appeared infront of Jurak and Gwen. They where lucky, the Grimelkin was facing the same direction they where heading thus it did not see them, yet it having better vission in the darkness, saw the survivor's of the keep and was making a bee line right at them. With no known way to kill them the Grimelkin where rather gifted hunters of the keep.
The Candle's light that the Survivor's where standing in was blown out by the now gusty hall way. It seemed they needed to relight it, however the igniter the enchanted candle lied behind the fast approaching Grimelkin.
====
In the Treasure room the Slag Deadnaught pulled it's lance from the ground, looking around him to see his horde was not scattered all around out of order. Taking the Lance it turned it upright and started banging it on the ground. Three times did he hit the ground, three loud almost gong like rings echoed threw out the keep. The Slag Walkers and Kat's who where still alive ran from there hiding spots to answer the call. Ignoring the Survivors and new comers, only the Grimelkin still showed any interest in the pray.
Once all around the creature's started cleaning up the room, slowly restoring their beloved treasure and volt to its prime sheen.
Gradus muttered a curse word that would put the most angry of Gremlins to blushing. He fired his Iron Slug at the creature, it being so large even he could not miss. It predictably was completely unproductive. Even so, firing the gun felt like he was actually trying to actively stop his fast-approaching demise, so he continued firing. As he shot rapidly without bothering to steady himself, pausing only to reload, his shots became more and more off-target, until one shot completely missed the Grimalkin. It instead skittered off the wall and rebounded right in front of the Grimalkin's path, reappearing in its vision. It lodged within the body of the ghost, looking like a mini metal arm. There was no visible damage whatsoever or indication of pain, but...
Wait, maybe if I launch a projectile...
The Grimalkin gave a little moan of anger and continued approaching. The gap between them was steadily diminishing. Gradus swung his Iron Slug around and shot at the solid walls, hoping that it might rebound in front of the massive Kat and trick it into reflexively biting it or retreating. With a final shot, his store of ammunition ran out, though, All the mender could now do was watch his last ricocheting shots bounce back and forth, praying that one might trigger the Grimalkin's reflexive bite.
((Wasn't planning to make another post about this, but whatever.))
Matthew grasped the Canteen, observing it from every angle. Was it really filled with something like that? A substance that attracts the Swarm? Clipping it next to his Valiance, Matthew turned and walked onto the Elevator.
The most dangerous Gate we know, huh? Guess I'll be using this quickly.
"Well, thanks. I suppose. I'll make sure to think of you whenever I use it."
With that, Matthew took a seat in the far corner of the Lift, and waited to go down.
That sounded strange, didn't it.
Nappy sat at his elevator, waiting for the rest of his squad to ready up, when he looked up and saw it, clear as day. A tall, slender body entirely black, it's purple visages eminating slightly from the darkness. This creature was the same that haunted his nightmares. Never had he thought them to be real, nor do he ever want them to be, but here it was, watching over the camp like a vigil of horror. What could he say? Nightmares at the gate? abomanation at our doorstep? the words escaped him. raising his arm, he pointed to the creature.
"Deadman! We have movement, 11 O Clock! What is that thing?!"
He said in a panic, aiming the attention at the creature. Never would he forget what he saw, what happened when the creature turned and looked him in the eyes. He saw the abyss, a world of endless nightmares, dreams of endless sorrow, he saw death.
Gwen followed Jurak into the level, straining her eyes in the darkness to watch out for anything unpleasant that might jump out at her. "I-I'm not sure this is safe..." she muttered warily. Almost right on cue, a Grimalkin spawned right in front of them. Gwen resisted the urge to scream, and it was well she did, because the Grimalkin didn't notice them.
Suddenly, massive bullets whizzed overhead, with a few of them coming close enough to make her ears ring. She whimpered and ducked low to the ground, not wanting to become bloody mush if she got hit.
Gwen...
Yeah?
Get out of here.
But...why? I'm trying to-
We know what you're trying to do. Get out of here. Now.
Okay, but what's going on?
We're invading.
__________
A knight shouted out, "Deadman! We have movement, 11 o'clock! What is that thing!?" We've been spotted. How come nobody realized this? We considered it. Time to salvage the situation.
The Apocrean spawned an Obsidian Carbine in its right hand. Then the Swarm spoke aloud from the mouth of the monster:
"Withdraw, foolish knights."
As Jurak made his way down the halls, the Stepping quietly behind the shadowed monster, it became quite apparent what it was that it was after, the survivors light had been spirited away. (gotta save that joke for later)
"Gwen, grab that ember, we're gonna need 'em."
Looking down, he saw Gwen, trembling and covering her head.
"Whats' wrong with you?!"
He said in an angry whisper
"it's not like it can see us anywa-"
-PLINK!-
Gears and sparks went flying, as Jurak held together his shattered metal jaw. A richocheting bullet had bounced off, and nearly killed him. A one-in-a-million shot that would've killed anyone who hadn't had all the cyborganic replacements Jurak had.
"PthaNITH! $%^&* eece uh git! i'muh ill ou!"
He yelled in his broken words.
"Wab de membuh!"
He said, pointing to the lone ember, if this grimalkin didn't kill the survivors, they were going to wish they were dead
[Depth 23: Clockworks Terminal]
Getting up the Head-Warden turned around to see what the soldier was pointing at. To his surprise it seemed they where being visited by an Apocrean. Looking at Daud who whistled with two fingers, all the soldiers formed ranks infront of the Head-Warden Daud and Skotino. It seemed this Apocrean made a mistake in judging his chances. But then again he did not look like he was here to fight, just deliver a message. Reaching down beside the chair the Head-Warden dawned his helm and what looked like a rather large War-Hammer.
Tapping the ground with the prod of the hammer the Head-Warden spoke. "Creature, I care not from what darkness you came. I care not for what reason you came. But before you stands a Battalion of Knights, all of whom have been payed to do a job and then some. Unlike a normal knights who would have headed your warning and ran. They will not."
"To fight us, would be to die before us. Honestly, I have been here too long to care what happens to you creatures. So here is our counter offer. Leave now, or we see how long you can last before the might of around three hundred knights." The Head-Warden said, with a final tap from the hammer, the Merc's started to yell and scream threats. Being merc's.
Skotion looked over at the Apocrean, slight consern on his mind. "Daud, get my medication. This thing is not leaving until it's message is made clear."
With a nod Daud bounded off, rather lightly for such a man in heavy armor. Finding the supply crates labed Medical research he flipped it open to reveal a suitcase full of the injections Skotino needed inorder to keep the Dark Matter Shards from forming in his blood. Reaching up he grabbed the injection device, connecting the vile to the device Skotino removed his helm, unsealing his suit for but a moment.
The presence of Dark Matter energy could have been felt more entency for a moment as Daud injected him with the medication. Once it was done, Skotino placed his helm back on and placed a hand on his Archeron. Slowly walking to the front of the ranks. Once there he looked over the Apocrean. He laughed slightly as his voice ganed an Ethereal tone.
"Well well, it seems we have a treat too night boys. I remember what it is, or she, but the name evades me. Apollo, no thats not it. Well dead was the last ones name I remember that. However what I don't remember was your kind giving out threats to keep Knights from going into the Shadow-Layer. Has some one made a deal we should know about, parasite?"
Skotion spit at the ground as he started to draw his blade. A shallow Hissing sound was heard as the blade was unsheathed. He gave a silent beauty in the grim light, followed by its dark aura starting to poor off the blade like smoke in the night. With an unseen smile he pointed the weapon at the Apocrean.
"Well? Come on then if you think your hard enough. Each one of these men is dead loyal, and won't turn because you want us to leave. So I say again, come on if you have the set."

[Depth 20: Candlestick Keep, Burning Blackout]
Hearing the sound of yelling from behind the Grimelkin turned and found it's self some new pray easier to get at. Taking no time at all to think about it, the Grimelkin started after the Gremlin who was yelling like a drunker. All the while the sound of something worse was coming from above it.
It seemed like all this commotion called down something that was hiding in a book, which was standing on a book stand closed. A rather destinked moaning meow came from above the Grimelkin, looking up a shot of fear might have came into the minds of those who were around. A Black Kat was looking down at them, not yet having decided to join the battle or run away.
" Urghh... Am i in heaven ? " ark said while slowly regaining conscious. " Do we win ? or do we lose ? " ark said like he was on drugs or something like that. His eye starts to regain focus he then see a pepperkat banging on his forcefeild. He quickly blasted the cat off , and saw a towering shadow figure. " Dang , not this guy again ! quick someone tell me where the candle is ! " ark said angrily.
He then saw another grimalkins and another one and.. another one. " Oh gosh... looks like i am in hell right now." he said. He looked at the rune gradus made , then he smiles breifly for a seccond. " Hey there gremlin ! guess youre not that bad of a guy at all , in fact you are the most good guy i ever met. " he said while stomping the ground creating barbs all around grimalkins. " for that i am going to stick with you and help you as much as i can. you save my life anyway.." ark said
Anger boiled within the members of the Swarm. Perhaps we have grown soft from dear Gwenivere's influence. Let us leave the negotiations for another time.
The Apocrean snapped its fingers, and legions of powerful Void forms leaped from the shadows. Then it spoke again. "These scum are 'payed,' you say? We are not familiar with this concept of 'payed.' We mistakenly believed that you valued your lives. Rest assured that this mistake shall not be repeated."
The Void combat forms moved forward in unison. Ethereal, otherworldy sounds emanated from their mouths, together with words spoken in fell voices and dark tongues. Void Gremlins chanted in a language so ancient even Tinkinzar barely remembered it. Void wolvers howled their lonely songs in chorus with the chanting. Together, the sounds seemed to combine into a unified song conveying the grim realities of death, destruction, and hopelessness.
This...this was a completely unseen side of the Swarm. Had it simply failed to reveal this side...
...or had the Swarm changed since their last meeting?
"Well boys. Here is some target practices."
With that said the Merc's threw there sanity to the wind as they attacked in a death charge. It would have been clear to the swarm this was a different bread of Knights compared to the Spiral's. These men and women did not care at all, throwing there lifes away for a little cheep pay. In there unity for money these men and women showed more stranghed as a unit and a group. Able to work together and communicate more like a family.
Compared to the ones they where fighting the individual worked best in a group where they where able to cover each others backs more effectively. Even as the first volly of guns shot out, the Merc's did not back down, and as it stood the Head-Warden was already imputing the lock down codes to of a containment breach
"You came up here, a place where you are weak in stranght to make a point I am sure." Skotino said as he held up his blade, the sound of its vial edge hissing and gleaning with a savage glee, excited for battle. "How about this, you return to you're hole in the ground. And we won't have to inflict more pain on this end. Besides, we know you're aware of what we are after. Your energy sources, yet just like every time before hand, you can't stop us. So why fight it?"
Skotino said as he walked closer, it seemed every step he took to the swarm it back off him more and more. As if wanting to avoid him. Sticking his blade out Skotino easily sliced threw one of the Void Gremlins looking it over with a smile.
"Oops...Did I do that?"
"You can't stop us, so why fight it?"
How arrogant.
These certainly were very high-caliber knights, so the Swarm decided that a new approach was needed. The Void forms retreated into the shadows, only to re-emerge as stronger, more powerful forms. Void Wolvers became Void Alpha Wolvers. Void Lumbers became Void Mecha Knights. Void Gremlins became Void Stalkers.
The higher quality seemed to justify the reduced respawn rate. And so the Swarm attacked again with renewed vigor. It would have to learn how to use its new capabilities.
No matter the enemy the Merc's kept fighting, it was true they took wounded back out at once to avoid anything major happening but Skotino stood tall. Still no matter how close he got to the Swarm creatures, they avoided him and all he had was an unseen smile. As the fight raged on the Merc's started to work in bigger groups to out number there foes and take them down, regardless of what it was, it seemed they had the numbers advantage here.
Getting up the Head-Warden looked at the creature who was calling down this hell. "The Terminal has been locked down, there is no escape or entering this level now."
"Thank you, go have some fun with the rest of the men. I am sure they could use the helm." Skotino said, the Head-Warden nodded. In the back Daud was barking orders that where being followed to the letter.
Quickly dashing up Skotino's blade made an evil hiss as it cut threw a Mecha Knights' core. This made Skotino start to laugh, his mind seemed to reach his sanitary limit as he rushed forth like a demon, his blade hungry for battle, cutting down anything that stood in his way. Even thou he was backed by his fellow Merc's Skotino's bloody lust was rather well pronounced in the battle field.
"Come on! I fought doors tougher then you blokes!" Skotino said as he laughed his way right up tot he Aporean.
Once he was there, the Mercanary simply laugh at the creature, pointing and bending over in pain, yet he was not in any kind of pain at all. With his Ethereal voice he spoke out loud.
"It does not matter what you spawn. We won't back down. Brothers in arms and brothers in death, we work for dirt cheap pay with nothing to lose but our lifes." Skotino looked up, the dark aura around his body seemed to get heavier. "Your cut off from the rest of your single minded Swarm now. We locked the level completely, nothing in or out. The only thing getting in or out of here now, is going to be you, in ash's."
With that said Skotino lifted his blade up above his head starting a down ward strike, the blade it's self had a shine to it, as if it was alive. Yet, the ever present hissing sound could be heard as the blade cut threw the air.
The Apocrean simply stepped aside and let the blade strike pavement. This human appears to be seeking out a one-on-one fight. Why do they do that?? It's so predictable.
It melted down into black goop and reformed into a few Void Scarabs. They batted dirt in his face and took off for one of his comrades.
Gunfire tore through them and turned them back into black biomass. The Swarm appeared to be losing.
Which was exactly the impression it wanted to give.
((Cue my next character app.))
"The voices, the whispers, they're drowning everything out."
Nappy said to himself, his entire frame shaking with his hands over his ears. To no avail, the shadows' voices peirced through his padded mitts.
"demak udoka, ihk jaka vur tiselaiw. erekess marfedelom yth fehlim wux tobor"
Songs of death danced in his ears, the ceasless words flowing into his head like gasoline onto a pyre.
"Shutp up, shut up, shut up! Shut up, SHUT UP, SHUT UP!!!
His voice resonated within him, beinging forth unholy volume, alien to the usually dreary man. His mask slammed down over his face as he reached for his sword. The hilt, splintering upon being clutched in his furious hands. holding the sword in both hands, he brought the heavy blade down upon a stalker, shattering through it's defensive stance. Again and again. smashing the blade upon the single entities form, forgetting entirely about the other forces.
"YOU. WILL. DIE."
Nappy screammed at the small puddle that was once an opponent. Withdrawing the blade, Nappy readied a nitronome in his left hand, still brandishing the sword in his left
"DEATH TO THE DARKNESS AH HAHAHA!"
He roared, before continuing his frenzied rampage
The biomass exploded with the Nitronome in a fiery blue blast. Unimaginable pain erupted through the Swarm, and a piercing scream echoed through the lower depths of the Clockworks.
Bitter and angry, a Void Wolver lunged at an unfortunate knight and tore his throat out right in front of his comrades. When it was inevitably struck down, another rose from the ashes to take its place. Another knight tripped over a fallen Void Zombie, only to find himself face to face with a horde of very pissed-off Void Gels and promptly eaten alive.
Blood and biomatter flowed like water before the next dawn broke.
((Stahp starting fight scenes when I'm napping D:<))
Matthew looked up. The sounds of moving feet were audible. Standing up, Matthew listened closer.
Are those Darkwatch fighting each other?
Screams of pain and large explosions could be heard now. He came to a horrible realization.
The enemy is here? Why in the- OH SHOOT
Stumbling backwards to dodge, Matthew had slammed into a wall, narrowly avoiding a buzzsaw. Matthew whipped out his Valiance, and activated his Striker Booster. Aiming with two hands, Matthew frantically looked around. Void Stalkers.
Why is the Swarm here...
An attack from the left side. Ducking it, the infected Gremlin cloaked, to be replaced by another from the opposite side. Dashing away, Matthew turned to shoot. Immidiately after cloaking, the bullets flew through the space the Gremlin had just been. A sound to his back. Matthew was tripped backwards. Midfall, he activated his Booster, to flip back to his feet.
"You wanna do that? I can move fast too!"
Holstering his Gun, Matthew pulled out his Thorn Blade. Boosting towards the Gremlin afterimages, Matthew continuing turning and attacking, only being milliseconds too late. He was certainly fast, but the Gremlin remained faster. Frustrated, Matthew lunged at the Stalker. The Rapier piecred the Gremlin easily.
Contact!
Directly after being skewered, the Gremlin cloaked. Appearing next to Matthew, it destroyed his Striker Booster. Following up with a kick to the face, Matthew was thrown to the ground. The Stalker jumped forwards, intending to finish him. Matthew raised his sword, only barely blocking. They both pushed, even though only one of them was fighting for their life.
"demak udoka, ihk jaka vur tiselaiw. erekess marfedelom yth fehlim wux tobor"
"Die already!"
Matthew threw his fist at the Gremlin, who cloaked away. He unholstered his Valiance again. Looking towards the Gremlin, Matthew spun and threw his sword. The Gremlin easily dodged, and cloaked behind the Knight. Blocking the attack with the bayonet, Matthew grinned as he stared the Gremlin in the eyes.
"I win."
Quickly ducking, Matthew laughed in delight as his Rapier boomeranged back, only to strike the Gremlin. He yanked the sword out of the Stalker, and took a battle stance.
"demak udoka, ihk jaka vur tiselaiw. erekess marfedelom yth fehlim wux tobor"
"That doesn't do anything!"
Slashing at the Gremlin, Matthew was satisfied to see that he could, if anything, hit his target. Perhaps he attacked more than what was necessary. It didn't matter at that point. Spinning once more, Matthew beheaded the Stalker. The corpse dissolved into a black goop. Pausing for a moment, Matthew breathed heavily. He wiped sweat from his forehead.
"One Void enemy, huh?"
Matthew sprinted into the actual battle. Power in numbers.
((I felt like taking what was in Bombardier's post. Seemed like a good chant for the Swarm.))
As Molpos was looked at the army, they just advanced past him when he noticed Grimalkin's slowly moving forward and Molpos started to panic even more. As Molpos looked down, he saw a valestone crystal and quickly picked it up and crushed it. Molpos then put the dust in his mouth and swallowed it and started to breath normally again.
However, there where bullets now bouncing all over the place which made Molpos trapped and when he looked up, a black kat was watching and said "HOW DID I GET TRAPPED!?!" Molpos turned around and saw the other gremlin much farther which was confusing for Molpos. He thought "Wait, what about the robot?"
((OOC: Couldn't do much here...))
Alex had managed to free himself of the robot that had been pinning him down, though he was now tired after the effort given in doing so. He wiped his brow, as he rested the rifle on his shoulder. Surveying the area, he saw a dark figure hanging back above the conflict. Wondering how to neutralise it, before it became an addition to the growling list of issues, the Ranger began to notice the candles around them start to flicker. Were they going out?
He quickly started to look for a way to reignite them, and saw a way. A cinder all the way up the hall, past the wave of Grimalkinks slowly advancing. He had an idea of how to get past...but it was risky.
"Hey, these are Ghost's right? Passing through objects like air. How about we just run through them? If we can get through fast enough, we could avoid their bite before they could close down in time. Ofcourse if we cant run through like I think, we'll end up kat-chow. Anyone agree, or should we confine ourselves to an early grave here & now?".
Alexander readied his rifle, and aimed it shakily at the Black figure looming over-head the group further down the hall. As he inhaled a breath, he looked down the scopes per usual to his routine. He marked out the rough outline of the beast, as he exhaled, and fired a round from Penance. The shot streaked through the air, landing a hit onto the Black Kat. As it recoiled from the hit, it revealed its omnious, purple eyes to the Ranger, who shouted out what he saw.
"Black Kat above us, watch yourselves!".
" i can grap the cinder , you just need to run fast enough right ?" ark said , preparing himself to run.He then burns himself for more speed , with a boost from a energy blast behind him he activated his dash module. He then dash past trough the grimalkins just before the shadow nom down thin air.He repeated the process and grap the cinder . " Now how do i get back again ? " ark said." Note to self don't just dash around thing without double checking. " ark said trying to make a joke.
( Note : i have tried to dash through grimalkins in-game what do you know ? it works ! thx edolas ! )
Jurak grabbed Gwen by her arm, she seemed to be distant or in a daze, like her mind was elsewhere. Dragging her through the halls, they reached a cinder and planned to throw it to the survivors when a toxigel appeared and picked up the cinder! Weither it was trying to steal it, or use it himself became irrelevant, as Jurak picked up the creature, cinder and all, and through it towards the candle...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nappy had seen the shadow images falter, if only for a minute, with the detonation of his bomb. A familiar, blood-stained smile appeared underneath the thick plate mask of the armored titan. Readying a more nasty surprise, Nappy felt immense pain from his back.
-VZZT-
"GAAAH!!"
Nappy screamed ouf of pain, falling forward as the buzzsaw slashed at his back. He turned around, holding the sword overhead, and brought it down faster than the creature could react. The blade smashed through the form, leaving a small crater in the ground, and fracturing the blade at the fringes. the sword was left behind, as Nappy resumed his project; the Voltaic Tempest misting bomb. Whipping the three readied bombs in various locations, and placed another at his feet. Though more shadowed creatures materialized, it appeared as though they were hesitant to attack him. Perhaps they were wondering how he was still standing. The wound had been sealed, thanks to the suit, but the blood had began to seep through the front of his suit, leaving him, a giant bloody skeleton.
"I WILL NEVER DIE!!!"
He said, before being ripped from the frontlines by a guardian. As he was being dragged away, he squeezed the detonator with a smile. The high pitch confirmation lasted all of one second before the shocking surprise would be delivered.
As the battle raged on Skotino saw how they where getting out number, yet this was a good thing he wanted this to happen. Just wished that it did not cost so many lifes this time. With a spin of his blade Skotino found himself able to fend off the scarabs letting them turn back into there bio-mass. Turning around Skotino looked at Daud with an unseen smile.
"Daud, give me a dazy popper."
With a confused look Daud nodded and pulled out what looked like a small rocket. Inside was what looked like, dirt mixed with chemical's. With a strike of the bottem the small missle launched it's self up into the air, coming to a point before turning back around aiming for the middle of the area. When it was about 100 meter's above, it exploded creating a rain of Chemical's and this dirt. However, when ever the concoction touched the Swarm it made the creature retreat.
Skotino smiled as he walked into the cloud. "I was hoping to save this till later. Bit it seems we have no choice but to save it now. Well let me at least explain it. This is the same compounds found in the Sanctuary's air, and ground. For some reason your kind can't go on it. Regardless of where it is. Now I would like to know why, but I will take my chance's. Because we need to get into the Shadow-Layer, and your just a newsence."
Ark flies Soar through the grimalkins wall ,like a cutter on mineral.Than he landed on the candel , lighting both the slime and the enchanted candle. " Well , i guess there is always a way around stuff." Ark said . " Hey , i ' have ' lit the candel ! and my currently burning with enchanted cinder body probably will lit the other too " ark said while litting the other candles. " Oh By the way we have got company on the entrance ! a gremlin and a girl if i am not wrong ... "
Matthew grabbed for his katana. The same blade that the Commander used. Unlike Matthew, he had clearly mastered remaining conscious while holding the blade. In fact, it seemed as if the Commander could draw out power at will.
Do I really want to fight with one of the Lieutenants? He tightened his grip. His eyes shifted from a black to pure white.
Course I do.
Matthew's stance changed completely. From ready to battle, to struggling to stand. No thoughts got through to Matthew except one.
Fight...
Sprinting at Skotino, Matthew spun around, swinging at the Commander with an overhead strike.
