Okay, I'll play along for a bit...

I don't have thoughts on balancing bombs. But I wish there were a way to kill a single monster quickly with bombs. The old RSS was like that. It might help newbies get more into bombs, and would make being a solo pure bomber less tedious.

Although Dibsville's question is presumably a joke, I'll say one thing. Another one of Fehzor's joke threads caused me to propose various ways of balancing them, other than adjusting damage and status --- length, width, stroke type, etc. For example, nerf the Brandishes slightly by making them really short, like daggers. More variety could be introduced into swords with very little effort from Three Rings.

I don't get upset or concerned about delays to updates. When updates come out, I'm happy. Until then, my brain is occupied with other things, such as work and family. Spiral Knights is not worth getting upset about.

Although Krakob's question is a harmless joke, I won't respond to it, because I try to restrict my comments to Spiral Knights.

Fehzor, I restrict my comments to Spiral Knights as a reaction to vanity threads such as "I'm leaving the game" and "I just returned; what's new". I despise these threads, where players seek attention and indulge their narcissism! By the way, I also dislike the "Ask so-and-so anything" threads. And now I'd like to return to discussing the game only.

Trats-Romra, there's no question that the armor is completely unbalanced. To some extent this is a holdover from the days when damage bonuses were harder to get. But that doesn't explain the whole imbalance, and I don't know how to fix it, except for a complete armor redesign.

Sonosuke, we must never apply real-world physics to this fantasy. But it would be nice if bombs had a slight destructive advantage, in breaking blocks or minerals. As I mention in post #4, being a solo pure bomber can be tediously slow sometimes.

Sandwich-Potato, the fire can get more oxygen from the environment, especially as air convects upward from it. Oops, I just tried to apply real-world physics to this fantasy.

Krakob, I find heavy swords the most fun, and I like the technique of purposely missing the first stroke and then landing the second stroke. I really liked using DA on the zombies in FSC, before the zombie AI was changed. Now their jumps are a little too dangerous (although their swipes are less dangerous of course).

Fehzor, I like the artwork best. The characters and other graphics are adorable and retro. I like that the game doesn't take itself too seriously. The devilite humor, particularly in Heart of Ice, is great.

Aplauses, Fehzor always refers to me as female, and I don't care one way or the other.

I'm gonna ask more than one, get over it.

Yes, my swords question was a joke.

But serious question time:

What is your opinion on Armour of the Fallen? Do you think it could be useful when paired with BKC for universal Damage + universal ASI, while still retaining somewhat good defenses (Normal + Shadow, +2 Fire and Poison, +4 Freeze)?

If you had to choose, would you rather use Valiance or Neutralizer in a serious situation?

Would you recommend Venom Veiler, or do you think a different bomb would be better in its place (e.g. Electron Vortex).

Which Sprite of the three do you prefer, if any? Why?

Do you think the secondary Kat Cowls have their places for pure swordies/gunners/bombers, or does BKC outshine them.

What is your opinion on the Crest of Love from the Supply Depot?

Fehzor, I never listen to video game music (although I've heard that SK's music is quite good). I listen to a wide variety of music while playing, including orchestral, jazz, bluegrass...but mainly indie rock/pop from the USA.

Jenovasforumchar, I have never belonged to Lancer Knightz, although I have contributed data to them. Glacies, Zeddy, Exasperation, Antistone, Skepticraven, Kalaina-Elderfall and others have also done good studies. There are several reasons why you see me posting the Lancer Knightz data. (A) Donkeyhaute (who leads the project) seems extremely methodical, reliable, and committed, so that I can trust the numbers themselves. (B) They present their data clearly, so that I can understand them and present them to others. (C) Unlike Glacies, Zeddy, etc., Donkeyhaute doesn't frequent the forums, so I take it upon myself to mention his data in relevant threads.

And now back to discussing SK itself, with Dibsville:

* Something needs to be done about Fallen's fiend penalty. It makes no sense on a shadow armor, right? Especially since fiends are the nastiest monster family. And let's not even compare it to Chaos. I never use Fallen anymore.

* I don't have Neutralizer, but Biohazard is fun and effective in solo fights against big enemies. Valiance is much more "dependable" for me, especially in a party. But if I were more of a gunner, I might get really bored with Valiance and start using Neutralizer.

* Venom Veiler is very effective in support-bombing, although not especially fun. The vortex bombs are probably better overall, but VV is nice for variety, and not at all useless.

* Maskeraith is my only sprite, so I don't have informed opinions on sprites.

* The secondary kat cowls are weak because their odd-numbered buffs are hard to work into an optimized set. Maybe they should be given a little more offense, at the cost of some defensive penalties? Or maybe MSI+1, which doesn't solve the problem but makes them more attractive anyway?

* Crest of Love is an accessory? I don't know anything about accessories.

Fehzor, I'd rather not list my equipment specifically, because I don't like talking about myself and I don't like giving away information that can be used to identify me in-game. My privacy is valuable, and no one should particularly care about Bopp anyway.

Because it is relevant to the authority of my sword guide, I'll just say that I have all of the 5-star swords except for Triglav and Voltedge. That includes near-but-not-exact variations such as Fearless Rigadoon and Furious Flamberge. It does not include exact reskins such as the cleaver and the candy poker.

You don't have triglav!? That is an outrage.. it is significantly different than sudaruska. Get one now. Or get an ice cleaver, actually. Then you can have swagger due to the way that it causes an explosion like 2 feet away from the edge of the sword. Magic.

And I was only interested in seeing how much we had in common in our arsenals, because I don't "care about Bopp", I care about "Bopp's opinions". Its interesting to see where you're coming from, especially with things like Sudaruska and Triglav, which at first glance appear the same.... but Sudaruska is used more for pushing things away and keeping them there, triglav is much more damaging but harder to use.

The implications are that if I want to safely use triglav, I have to aim all of my attacks such that they hit enemies that won't hurt me if I freeze them suddenly, which means coming at them from an angle on the 2nd hit and charge attack. But lets say I'm fighting a trojan... if I suda charge that trojan, she'll get pushed away a bit and then turn around to get at me again. If I triglav that trojan, I can deal a ton of damage as the trojan is forced to sit there while I charge up my sword again and again. The same happens with everything-- triglav's charge deals ice damage + a geometric number of charge attacks-- usually 1-3.

"Opinion: I have never used Triglav, but the possibility of not knocking enemies away on the charge attack seems quite dangerous, so I vote for Sudaruska." doesn't quite cut it. Quit being lazy and go play blast network. Or buy a cleaver so you don't have to. I won't judge.

----

What are your thoughts on UVs from a game design perspective? Their purpose is to make gear "unique"... How would you have carried this out and do they fulfill their goal?

If you recall Zeddy's thread on "make every weapon do everything already", here--- http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/92419

How would you design such a system in general? Such that you could build any Spiral Knights weapon and then some?

And what about the arcade? Have you seen the things they tried during the beta? What do you think of those?

okay

Okay, I'll work on getting Triglav. But don't hold your breath. Once I do, someone will say "But you don't have Voltedge?! How can you say that Combuster is better?" Well, by observing other players I can. But okay I'll get Voltedge too.

As far as I can tell, UVs fill two game design roles. The first is to add an ingredient of gambling, just like the prize wheel, lockboxes, etc. I don't like that aspect of Spiral Knights, because I worry that it preys on addictive personalities. The second is to make it extremely difficult for a knight to acquire the best possible equipment. I mean, even once you make it to 5 stars, you probably don't have CTR+4 on your Acheron and Storm Driver. And once you do, you want to get ASI+4 as well. And you need shock+4, fire+4, and maybe freeze+4 on your Snarbolax set. Then Three Rings disturbs the equipment balance, and you have to do the same for a new set. In this way, even very advanced players can keep theoretically striving for improvement, even though the returns diminish drastically. That seems like good design, mostly.

Zeddy's idea is nice in that it creates variety by simple combinatorial explosion, instead of requiring variety to be custom-programmed by the apparently overworked Three Rings. It's derivative of other games, but so is our current system, so that's okay. My one problem is that it might create too much symmetry, in letting any weapon acquire any damage type and any status. Design often benefits from a mixture of symmetry and asymmetry. For example, Neuschwanstein would be much uglier if all of the turrets were identical. For another example, the asymmetry between DVS and WHB is surprising and interesting.

I don't know what you mean about the beta Arcade, but I'm happy to discuss it.

Sandwich-Potato, like everyone else I feel that the radiant drought is severe. Three Rings is doing it either because (A) this is how they make their money now, or (B) they have something planned, such as Tier 4, to make the drought make sense. If it's B, then we just need to wait. If it's A, then we need to propose some other way for them to make their money. (If you were specifically talking about RNG for UVs, as in my post #23, then I don't mind that. Fancy UVs are definitely luxuries.)

Pipipipipi, Fehzor starts a lot of threads around here. Over time they grow increasingly bizarre. This one was started without my knowledge, but I found it to be a clever twist on a tiresome cliche, so I played along.

I make the best threads and you know it. Especially about the brandishes growing legs and fighting each other. That one was a good time.

What I meant by the arcade construction, was that they tried a ton of things before coming up with the current I mean old system of building gates.
Like here- http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/307

But really you can skim the bottom of General Discussions to figure out exactly what they tried, and how it could have gone.

A few other interesting bits:
-You used to be able to pay to increase how much others would get from a gate, to leverage more of a mineral into them.
-The gates used to be based on mineral count rather than time.
-The gates didn't all go to the core.
-"Travel Agents"

And what do you think about rare drops? Like how finding a sealed sword and antigua was when the game first came out?

Apparently Dogrock has the Purple Spiral. I don't know what he did for it. Whoever sent Three Rings that SK-themed cake deserves it, although copycats would not.

People who massively edit the wiki may deserve the Purple Spiral. This is really Three Rings' job, that we do for free. I edit a fair amount, but other players (Sir-Onox, Trying) have edited more. My sword guide is arguably a strike against me, because it's not community-owned, it steers people away from trying certain weapons and armor, etc.

People who organize events (Lockdown tournaments, short story contests) might deserve it. But they would have to do several of them, to earn such a special award. People who massively help newbies, in-game and on the forums, might deserve it.

Three Rings probably has no interest in rewarding the data collectors and reverse-engineers (Zeddy, Exasperation, Donkeyhaute). In some sense they diminish the game's mysteriosity and casualness --- words I just made up.

I should point out, Katmint (claims to) has a Purple Spiral which was awarded for wiki editing as far as I know. Dogrock says he got his for helping tons of people with technical stuff during the Steam release of the game.
If I don't remember incorrectly, I believe that Tevokkia also got one for arranging a huge competition but I'm not very sure about that. It might have been someone else and it might have not been at all.

Yes, I forgot Katmint. For what it's worth, I do acknowledge him/her for wiki edits on my wiki page. It's not surprising that he/she would get one.

Fehzor, that was an interesting thread, although I still don't get how the gates worked and how it was different from the post-launch gate construction. The post-launch system was not much better than what we have now. The obvious answer is user-generated content with a rating/voting system, as others have suggested many times. By running it like the test server, Three Rings could even create a new revenue stream from it.

Pipipipipi, I like the Swarm as an enemy, and the Unknown Passage is great fun. I've always wished that Three Rings would take a few days to come up with some sensible backstory, and then start revealing it to us in bits and pieces. A well-done plot could really enhance this game. The plot would ideally tie up all of the mysterious super-powers: the Swarm, the author of the Echo Stones, the Apocrea, Tinkinzar, Vog, etc. Oh, and the weirdness at the end of Ghosts in the Machine.

Like anyone I'm itching for new content, but it doesn't have to be the core. When the core is opened, I'd like to see one or two new tiers (4 and 5), possibly with weapons and armor going up to 7 stars. There's no reason not to go beyond 5 stars. If Three Rings wanted to stick it to us, they'd make the Blitz Needle, Acheron, Combuster, and Chaos upgrades weak.

What do you think the most annoying status is?

Do you think the Gunner/Tortodrone update will be released at the same time?

Do you think the Radiants will be fixed with the Gunner/Tortodrone update? If so, which one?

reponses

Pipipipipi: Yes.

Dibsville: One of the worst armors is certainly Arcane Salamander. Its protection (elemental) doesn't line up with its offense (slimes and beasts). Its offense is two +1s, making it hard to work into an optimized set. On top of that, you can craft it only in the Sanctuary.

Shock is pretty annoying and often fatal. Sorry I couldn't choose a more imaginative answer.

I don't know anything about the Tortodrone update. I'm not sure that Three Rings regards the radiants as broken. If it does, then it could fix them at any time. And a new boss/Tier 4/tortodrone update seems like a better place to fix them then a gunner update.

I don't know enough to vote against either Drakon or Seraphynx. If I had to, then I guess it would be Seraphynx. But I've never seen it used in a genuinely hard situation (e.g. SIMF, SFSC).

I've never used Iron Slug, and I don't see other people using it often enough to form an opinion. Callahan has always been one of my favorite guns, even though the damage output is sad. I'm hoping for a nice rebalance of this stuff in the gunner update.

Ice Queen beats Skolver if you don't use swords, right? But then you'd choose other offensive armors. Generally I'd choose Dread Skelly over Ice Queen.

The drop rates on Orbs and Sparks of Life seem fine. I just keep piling them up. At this point, the entire game seems quite generous to me, except for radiants.

Yeah, radiants aren't exactly generous to anyone. Then again, that's a given.

Where and how exactly would you start if you were to rebalance the equipment? I personally may start off with the Acheron (being the most complained about weapon), giving it the damage as Obsidian Edge + Poison debuff on enemy. Unless that's how much it is already.

Sandwich-Potato, I don't think that they're perfectly balanced, but they're close enough. It somewhat depends on your play style, party size, and monster clumping. If you play solo and pick off individual monsters with charges, then Acheron is the obvious choice. But if you play in a party and are willing to spread poison around, then perhaps Obsidian could outperform Acheron overall. They are more closely balanced than Acheron and Gran Faust, and even Gran Faust has advantages over Acheron (being able to knock back multiple monsters on regular attacks).

Pipipipipi, my top choice would have to be making a level editor available to users (or at least some users). That might solve the problem of new content, while also increasing community involvement, keeping obsessive expert players interested, etc.

Sonosuke, the big limitation on rebalancing any item is that there are already thousands of players with that item, who will be upset. If we ignored this problem, then we could imagine complete redesigns, in which most of the armors are thrown out, a combinatorial system (like Zeddy's mentioned above) got installed, etc. Here are a few less-ambitious ideas, that Three Rings could implement more easily:

* As I explain here (and mention in post #4 above), there are ways to modify swords other than tweaking damage and status: length, width, knockback, attack pattern, etc. I'd like to see more of these attributes used, to make swords more interesting. For example, the Flourishes are all identical, except for tweaks to damage and status. That's boring. Same for Brandishes. Leviathan vs. CIV is a more interesting variation (knock back). DVS vs. WHB is a more interesting variation (speed, interruption).

* I'd like more big enemies, that a Blitz Needle charge can't instantly kill. Not bosses, but rather enemies that you see regularly. For such an enemy, long-term damage might outweigh immediate damage, tilting the balance away from damage-oriented weapons toward status-oriented weapons.

* Currently the game is too offense-oriented. I'd like to see more enemies that force you to take a defensive stance. This could make many more armor sets desirable, heavy swords more desirable, etc.

What about the fact that people are constantly in flux Bapp? Like, it doesn't matter if OOO makes your armor the new mad bomber because you'll just leave in a few months anyway? Doesn't simply not caring about the players with those items fix the whole "not fair to those with the item" conflict? OOO uses that all the time and people only get incredibly upset with them until the new set of players come in and don't realize that anything "wrong" or what have you went down.

Specialist

Greetings, Bopp.

What would you do to increase the effectiveness and viability of the various "specialist equipment?" Particularly items such as the lonely Deconstructor, Wrench Wand, and the infamous Cautery Sword? Do you think that changing their specific damage bonuses so that they were on an entirely different level than UVs such that, say, a Cautery Sword would deal 25 or even 50% more damage to a Slime than a Nightblade, would be too drastic?

Hi, Procorus. I don't have many thoughts on this topic, but here's a shot.

The specialist equipment I see at the Zebulon page is all armor and shield. Armor is in need of massive rebalancing, as I've described above. Some of the armors with monster-specific bonuses is a holdover from the days when blanket bonuses were harder to get. Some of the armor may even be a holdover from before the damage types were set; for example, Volcanic Salamander's elemental defense doesn't line up with its slime offense. (On the other hand, the same criticism applies to Arcane Salamander, which was introduced long after launch.)

Dead-end alchemy paths such as Deconstructor, Cautery Sword, and Winmillion should probably be extended to 5 stars or removed altogether. There is another option --- specializing them to Tier-2 Lockdown --- but that would probably destroy any semblance of variety in Tier-2 Lockdown. That's kind of like your idea of making Cautery Sword outshine Nightblade. I'm opposed to that idea, because it would just make Cautery Sword even worse as a trap for newbies.

Ultimately, there is already room for greater variety in swords (post #40). There's probably also room in guns and bombs, but I'll leave that to other people. There would be room for greater variety in armor and shields, if more of the game forced us to adopt defensive postures (post #40).

I'll add one more thing about armor. Arsenal stations made it easy to hyper-customize one's equipment to the level. But recently there have been movements in the other direction, toward greater variety in the threats you'll face: compounds, more random monster boxes, most danger missions, Shadow Lairs, etc.
