Fire Crystals, Crystal Energy, and Speed Runs (Oh my)

Ok, so I'm a returning player who never really made it past "new recruit" status (never been to T3). Like a lot of steam users, I made an account during the winter sale a few years ago, but only played for a week or two. Then I played for a week or so after they added missions, and during one of the Halloween celebrations, and now I'm back. Point is, I have inconsistent knowledge and a lot of questions. I have looked around the forum, but if any of these have been already asked and answered, I apologize.

1) What, if anything, is actually worth buying (either with $$ or crowns) energy for?

2) I gather that you should always add the maximum amount of crystals when heating equipment, but is heating 3* to level 10 worth it for the chance of prize boxes, given that you only need to reach level five to craft to 4*?

3) I usually take my time during a run. I kill absolutely everything. Is it smarter, loot wise, to run straight through only stopping for treasure boxes?
I've almost always played solo before so I know none of the "unwritten" party etiquette. Are speed runs the norm in groups, and will I annoy my teammates (or even be booted) if I check every corner of the map?

4) Do Moonstone and Valestone have any purpose now... at all?

Thanks a billion to anyone willing to help me out here!! I'd also love any other advice (or links to useful threads). I've read most of the "beginner's guides" but I feel like there a lot of situational intermediate tips that don't seem to get covered. I've always enjoyed this game, and I'm trying to make an effort to commit to it this time, as my schedule is unusually clear for the next few months. Tips on party etiquette, especially, would be appreciated.

P.S. (5) Should I be using my headset (for voice chat)? I have one for some games that I play with friends, but I don't usually like to voice chat with random internet people (it makes me anxious... yes I know that's sad). Also, it makes it harder to listen to music while playing.

Thanks again :)

Good to see someone come back

Good to see someone come back to give the game another chance. I hope I can help here!

1) Honestly, it depends on what you want. whatever you see worth the energy, pay energy for. I've managed to get to 5* without actually spending any cash (Well, I did buy OCH before getting to 5*, but I basically made it without it). As a general rule, try not to spend energy on things, except orbs of alchemy in the lower tiers and danger rooms. Danger rooms are something you may want to put off once you're comfortable with your ability to fight large amounts of gun puppies.
You can throw money at the game to get to the end faster, but it's not necessary. The saying "Time is money!" applies here.

2) If you're a tier 3 player, always go straight for the 4*. 4* items do the same amount of damage in tier 2 at any heat level, so they're an instant improvement on the 3* regardless of if you heat the 3* up to max or not.
If you have the orbs, craft 4*. If you can't craft the 4* as soon as you get your 3* to level 5, keep on levelling it.

3) Killing everything is the standard and is generally accepted to be more cost-efficient except in a few select situations. The kinds of levels that earn you the most money (Arenas, boss stratums) are pretty much impossible to speedrun anyway.
In a party, stay with the group, and they will stay with you. if you come across two paths, one has a party button and the other doesn't, go down the one without the button. Buttons usually make the path a one-way, while the other path will be a return trip with treasure for you.
Perhaps the exception is if you come across the end of a level a long time after the last split in the path. A lot of people will jsut want to move on rather than trek all the way back.

4) No, they don't. we could see a change in the future though.

5)It's prefectly fine not to voice chat, most players I know do not use it unless they are recording a video or such. I've always had microphone/other people's mics muted entirely and it doesn't seem to have bothered anyone.

I hope this helps!

EDIT: The best guide you can get is your own attention. Study how enemies attack as you play. get used to the delay between them starting to attack, and it actually hitting. Look up shield bumping and shield cancelling, they're life savers.
If you want numbers, or info on bombs, look for Zeddy. if you want advice on what sword you should get, look for Bopp.

Once again, I hope this helps!

my responses

I've skimmed the previous response, and I largely agree with it, but let me confirm/add:

1. Energy lets you buy Orbs of Alchemy and Fire Crystals. It also lets you open danger rooms, etc. Of course, you can also sell it for crowns. One caveat: 5-star Fire Crystals are so rare, and you need so many, that you could spend a lot of money heating all of your items. Be careful.

2. Although heating 3-star items beyond heat level 5 has no effect on their upgrades, it gives you more chances to get Forge Prize Boxes. Unless you are in a big hurry or short on 3-star Fire Crystals, keep heating just for the Forge Prize Boxes.

3. In the old days, going slowly was energy-efficient (most crowns per energy), while speed-running was often time-efficient (most crowns per minute). Now that levels cost no energy, more experienced players are doing speed runs, I think. But the norm is still to take your time and complete the level, in my experience.

4. Blue and green minerals currently have no purpose, but they may well get a new purpose during "part 2" of the "Arcade redux". Currently I am collecting them just as much as purple, red, and yellow minerals.

5. You are not obligated to voice chat. I never do.

As far as party etiquette is concerned: Just make sure that you know the (current) rules of the game. This will prevent you from making decisions that harm another player's crowns, heat, etc. For a weak example, I've been yelled at by players for "stealing their minerals", even though minerals are shared. Conversely, players have made me mad by not picking up a mineral --- not realizing that they're harming my mineral collection for no good reason. Know the rules, so that you know how to be considerate of others. Cheers.

Welcome back to the fold

While the previous two pretty much covered it, I think I'll add some in between

1: Really, value is subjective. Your level of solvency and desire for in-game items may be different from someone else. With this in mind, I really would not recommend buying fire crystals as it simply isn't cost effective, I believe it may cost around $60 to level up a 5* item, but I could be mistaken. Again, it's up to you. Where most people tend to invest monetarily is for promotional items and for sparks of life. Sparks are your friend, they revive you and they revive your friends. The best thing about the new revive system is that it's a flat rate, not incremental like the old one. So much energy gone…

2: The two other posters covered the two big points--the chance for prize boxes vs pure damage output--I do believe higher level items have a higher chance for UV, although I could be wrong on this.

3: It seems to be the norm to be thorough, especially with older players who are used to squeezing every drop from a level due to elevator costs. Myself I just feel like I've failed in my knightly duties if monsters are still alive. Still though, sometimes you get someone who expects everyone to speed through the level, especially on FSC. Only the party leader (indicated by a crown on the HUD) can kick people, and despite my thorough methods, I've never been kicked for this or any other reason. If you have a hard time finding people, feel free to post your Steam ID and I'll add you, I'm always down for a nice run--though I won't be back on SK until May.

4: This one has been thoroughly covered.

I have never used a headset, in fact, I only recently became aware that others used them

Be considerate, pay some level of attention, and have fun. If you do these things you shouldn't have any problems. Happy delving!

It can be taught!

Thank you guys for your quick responses. I do know that some of this is stuff best learned through experience, but you can never be too prepared...(Says the girl who takes notes while playing video games).
::pushes up nerd glasses::

@Drachronos- I'm still working on the timing of shield cancelling, but shield bumping I've known about. I just learned about shield bashing and dash yesterday. Playing in groups has messed up my timing because, after only solo play, I'm used to knowing how many hits it takes to kill each enemy. I'm sure I'll get used to it though, just have to be more defensive.

@Bopp- I've yet to win one of said elusive prize boxes, but I'll keep heating my weapons just in case.

@Moose-Margarine- Moose are probably the second best animal ever (after otters... obviously). Hadn't heard about the UV thing, hope it's true.

I've yet to spend real money on this game, but I'm not super opposed to the idea. The only things I seem to need are (as you all mentioned) orbs and fire crystals and there's no way I'm prepared to spend as much as it seems to cost. I think it's my own fault for being so over prepared. If I want to go into a level overqualified and able to solo, then all my weapons need fire crystals that I can't find because I'm not yet at the levels where they drop.

And about Sparks of Life- I have more than a hundred and have used one. I'm sure that'll change as I enter T3, though. What is the protocol for using them in parties? Am I expected to revive my teammates? Just once, or should I be more generous since I currently have extra sparks? I'm not trying to be a miser... but I can't imagine joining a party at a challenging level without being prepared to revive or willing to leave, and it surprises me that other people don't seem to feel that way. Ok, maybe I am a little bit of a miser... but that's why I picked a game where I wouldn't have to compete over loot.

They didn't have different difficulty settings last time I played. It seems like most people are "elite or bust" so I've been trying to finish all my missions at that level. I know that they drop better mats and stuff, but is there a formula? For example, if shining fire crystals can be found in stratum 5 or higher (so depths 19+) on Normal, does that equal 18+ on Advanced and 17+ on Elite? (The 18/17 are guesses, but I assume you get the point)

I don't think difficulty

I don't think difficulty level effects which orbs or fire crystals drop, more of the amount of crowns, heat, and mats dropped, ifI recall correctly.

As for missions, some of them are pains that I just went through on easy to get access to higher stuff I wanted to get to.

Don't feel like you ever have to rev people, the norm is for people to get themselves through the levels. You can rev people if you like though, and in guild runs it is done more often, especially when guild members are helping other lower ranked people get through higher levels.

You are not obligated to use your Sparks of Life on other players. I occasionally do. For example, suppose I'm helping a new guildmate through a mission that's tough for him. I'm trying to be friendly and nurturing. He dies (the second time on a level). I spend one SoL on him, and mention that I won't spend another on him (on any mission in the near future, actually). Also, you are right that knights who join missions that are clearly too tough for them should not be rewarded with SoL use.

Let me add that the mere fact that you worry about being considerate and polite probably means that you are already considerate and polite enough. So stop fretting and have fun. :)

As for difficulty levels, check out the Lancer Knightz mission data. It tells you that Elite pays 20% more crowns than Advanced does, and Normal pays 20% less than Advanced. Skepticraven has been collecting data on orbs, fire crystals, and materials, but I don't know that he's found any kind of pattern yet.

I have also found that Elite difficulty pays about 20% more in crowns.

If someone dies real fast and asks for a spark, I usually say that I don't have any left >:3
For friends/guildies I usually let them have one though.

Wait, Elite doesn't affect Orb or SoL drop rate?

TO THE NORMAL ARCADE!

Awesome

I can't think of any more questions, and you guys are heroes. :)
Guess I'll get back to the grinding, as I find that I desperately need to own a Forever Love Puppy Mask (They're just so... lovable).

Hehe.

#4. Occational prestige mission.

There is one prestige mission that requires 20 of 2 types of minerals (as a vanguard, probably less as a lower level knight).
This is the current only use of Valestone/Moonstone.

Also, I am 100% sure difficulty affects fire crystal drops (you get less on easier difficulties). I don't have enough data to say anything about orbs and sparks (because almost all my data is on elite).

Moose, you have a broken link. To fix it, add the 'http://' thing before the link.

Noooooooooo don't compete in that! I want to win it.
