I was trying to get a Price Check on two UV Plate Shields in the Bazaar section of the forum when someone asked a good question which I am not sure how to answer. I wanted to scale up one of the Plate Shields to a Volcanic Plate to compliment the Vog, Nameless and Red Rose sets which I have. I already have a level 10 Grey Owlite which is far to bright and shiny to wear all the time. The Volcanic Plate Shield will be a good secondary shield until I can find a Blackened Crest to upgrade.

One of the Plate Shield UVs is a Shadow Defense: Maximum. As the Plate Shield line has no inherent shadow defense, the Max UV shows up as 1.5 bars for a 6 point bonus (Max Bonus) on a 2* Plate Shield. How does a 1.5 bar (aka: 6 point bonus or Max Bonus) scale up from a 2* gear to a 5* level 10 gear?

I hope this question makes sense.

Anyway, here is the link to Price Check on my plate shield UVs complete with screen shot of the UV cards side-by-side:

Just a note, visually all UVs

Just a note, visually all UVs added (starting from Low, ending on Maximux!) all add only one and half bar. VISUALLY.
EDIT: Added as in totally new defense, not adding to an existant one (i'm sure it has something to do with leveling up gear)
EDIT2: It will also look as 1.5 bar on the highest upgrade (5*)

Visually

I hear ya on the visual aspect about what exactly do those bars represent. Most of the player base who are still around from the beta days still find those bars a mystery. I'm not sure any of us know for sure how those bars stack up in terms of numbers. Thus, if all UVs, irregardless of the UV rating are represented as 1.5 bars, how much protection or damage do those UVs represent as the gear is scaled-up and leveled? It's confusing to see 1.5 bars on all UVs which aren't inherent to the gear.

There is a 4* shield w/ a Maximum! UV. At 5* it gets higher. This only applies to defense UVs on armor and shields. As you can see, UVs on shields even maxed out are somewhat minuscule. Whether they make a difference or not is a good question but the visual representation does show the bars increasing for every star tier.

I think someone has a low normal and max normal VP shield that they were waiting to level and test but we'd need someone w/ a diff max UV (like ele or shadow) as well since the VP test could be affected by a hidden hard cap on defenses (if there is one).

Thank you for your reply Eek

Makes me want to experiment and document UVs on armor and shields. There are on going projects documenting the effect of UVs on weapons, so there should be documentation on armor and shield UV potency and caps. Not sure how to document shield tests UVs other than making videos. Would be so much easier to document in a PvP environment. A family member has made swords of every damage type and element to play with.
