Hello, fellow forumites. Some of you might know me. Others might not. To the latter, I'll make this brief. You can call me Scamall. I'm a regular over at the Treasure Vault, where I contribute with various stories and the like. And, a couple of months back, I posted a thread concerning the state of lore in the game of Spiral Knights, and a few ideas on solving this issue, which you can check out here:

Additional Dialogue Options and Lore

I recommend taking a look, maybe posting a comment or two, just so more people can contribute.

Anyway, this thread has been created in much the same vein: a way to expand the story.

Even if the link above's ideas were implemented, it would mean an inhuman burden on the OOO writing team. So, I've come up with a way that will not only come up with new ideas for lore, but has a *chance* to (I honestly don't know how the community at large will react if they actually do this, since they're rather unpleasable) improve developer-consumer relations.

And that idea is: a contest. A Lore-Writing Contest, to be precise.

What if, hypothetically, OOO held a writing competition for some aspects of Cradle? It could be anything at all, from Almire (which I personally do not care for, as far too many people are obsessed with that place) to the Legions of Ur. From the Gremlin colonies to the Haven forests. Hell, maybe people could come up with fairy-tales that the natives tell each other around campfires. Myths and legends concerning various weapons and items. Diaries from various explorers and treasure hunters.

This would likely get the community to become more active, as it means that their, or rather our, input would directly impact new content being added. It would also free up the workload on the OOO writers. Most importantly, it would allow Cradle to become a living, breathing world that would probably inspire more people to play.

Rather than griping about how there isn't new content, we should show our support so that, through some hard work, there can be.

But that's just what I think. What do you think?

See you around the block.

Scamall out~

As much as I love for this to happen, I know that it shouldn't. I've seen how these cpntests usually end.

It creates a rift between the fanbase. Obviously, should a contest like this be implemented, only a handful of the stories submitted would be used. A lot of people, especially those who lost, tend to be unsatisfied should someone else's story be used. It could also make a number of people feel alienated by the sudden shift in the story's style.

Making a contest like this could work. It could work brilliantly in fact. But it will ALWAYS cause a number of people in the playerbase to leave the game. As it is right now, OOO can't afford to lose anymore players at the moment.

That's a very fair assessment. We all know how many people are dissatisfied one way or the other. I remember the outcry over the UV ticket system getting that new pick-and-choose feature, simply because people were angry at how much time they spent upgrading weapons when they should have been looking at the bigger picture, which was an often-used aspect of the game getting a large upgrade.

As for those who win vs those who lose, I suppose I can respect your view on how those who lose would react in that situation. Especially since losing the opportunity to have your work become canon would sting a lot more than, say, a simple fan-made contest.

The shift in story was something I didn't fully consider. I would like a tonal shift, personally, but only because, as explained in the above linked thread, we haven't a lot to go on. Most of the "lore" is fanfiction posted to the forums themselves. Making it more in-your-face would seem obnoxious, yes, but some more clues here and there to keep us interested and speculating would, in my opinion at least, make for a more unified experience. That said, I imagine, if this WERE to happen, the shift in writing styles would be rather jarring.

All that being said, I can understand how a lot of people aren't there for the story. I just find it strange that an MMO of all genres doesn't have a very fleshed-out one. Sad, too, given the potential it has.

Perhaps....

Rather why not OOO just host a competition for the best stories, and the winner would receive a special item (maybe a special costume).

Of course to keep things simpler SK wouldn't implement these stories into the lore/game.

Maybe not for anything major,

Maybe not for anything major, but a story-writing contest for Prestige missions would work. The idea is to let the players work with the aspects of the story that already exist, not to make new ones.

Winners would win energy or items. Player generated prestige missions would give out more crowns compared to normal arcade missions. This would award the winners, give purpose to the stories, make people WANT to do the missions, and give people an alternative to FSC runs, while not being spammable (since it's a prestige mission, you can only do it once a day).
