It was announced over a year ago, and the last time we heard about it was when they removed gate construction. So, can we please have an update post on what we can expect from SK in the next year or so?

.....

So far all we have is compounds which are ridiculously hard (for non bombers) and offer pathetic payout.

stuff

Compounds are only difficult if you try wading into the creeps with basic melee attacks. Any sort of reliable AoE makes them a cakewalk. Obviously bombs work well, but there are plenty of other options (various sword and gun charge attacks will work fine). That said, their loot is definitely awful and could do with some tweaking (more treasure boxes, better payouts from minis, etc).

As for the OP - it's unlikely we'll be receiving anything akin to the last "What's in Development" post, since players reacted badly when hyped content was delayed. Presumably development is continuing behind the scenes, but for the now OOO's policy seems to be to keep hush and release it when it's ready.

Compounds is probably my favorite level right now. I hate the payout but it's an interesting and fun level that challenges me in ways other levels just don't.

And the community manager should presumably be working to hype updates at the appropriate times and well.... Manage the community. Doing nothing might prevent false hope and bad hype, but that kind of misses the point of having such community relations- to bolster and add appeal to what you've got going on, to control opinions. Refusing these things should be out of the question.

Atalanta came around french

Atalanta came around french haven a few days ago to talk about those stuffs (briefly), so it seems to be very much live still. Surely the gunner update and arcade redux have been in the make both at the same time which is why they're both taking so long, a look back at 2014 shows there's been some rumbling on the dev side. What I remember from that quick GM appearance was mentionning something after vana, which sounds good to take.

But why

Is staff just making a brief unannounced appearance when they have an entire website to advertise and hype.
2014 has a 7 month gap in development leading up to the Gun-update. There may be some "Behind the scene changes" but OP is right that it's been more than a year since the first part of their redux and not a single thing has been said beyond that. Dead silence.

It's understandable that forum backlash and heightened expectations are things to avoid, but if it means knowing nothing more than, "An update, eventually, that's change something. Or not really." Then let the forums catch ablaze! A simple mission statement of the Redux II shouldn't seem like a pipedream.

To know the game isn't just spinning gears, is reassuring. The gun update at least had something for people to latch onto for 14 months, whereas the main attraction of the game being remade just fell off the planet.

the new pickups

Just for completeness, let's remember that the new pickups --- barriers, artillery strike, etc. --- were also billed as elements of the arcade redux.

I avoid stratum 6 compounds

I avoid stratum 6 compounds since the pay sucks but as for the rest I'm totally willing to play.

VT, OC, DBB all make short work of everything in there.

Elite arcade payouts.

Compounds aren't all that bad, crown/heat-wise.
Concrete Jungle/Deconstruction Zones are the worst for that.
Graveyards/Compounds are the worst for treasure boxes.

I don't mind compounds unless I'm in depth 26-28. In fact, I often don't even go in arcade gates which would put me worse-off than doing missions [like FSC or OCH].

As for the arcade redux... I'm more excited about new boss/mission extension.

For reference

Here is the Original Announcement of the Arcade Redux:

"We’ve recently made some big, exciting changes to Spiral Knights. Now that the dust is beginning to settle, I’d like to take a moment and tell you about some of the other projects we have in store for SK.

Arcade Redux
After a great deal of evaluation we’ve decided to change the way the Arcade will work and the purpose it will serve to the SK community. After introducing missions, the Arcade has become a place of redundancy. It has also suffered from the recent sprite update, relying on mineral leftovers from the community.

Over several patches, we intend to transform the Arcade into the place it has always aspired to be:
- A sandbox-type experience where unexpected things can happen
- A place where players can farm materials and items in between missions
- A feature that gives players some degree of control over the experience

Modified Rank Mission Campaign
The Rank Mission campaign is going to be receiving an update that continues the story of the Artifact and introduces a new primary antagonist for the Spiral Knights. The framework for this story will allow us to further expand Rank Missions post-Vanguard.

New Tier 3 Boss
A new mission arc will be incorporated following the events of the Firestorm Citadel that will include a new boss monster for players to challenge.

Challenge Mode
In addition to the exciting features we have planned for the Arcade and Rank Missions, we're busy working on an all-new 'challenge mode' that will allow players to work as a team in cooperative scenarios and compete with other teams for a high score. Challenge mode will also feature rewards for those that really excel.

More to Come!
This isn't all that we have in store for you, it's just all we can talk about right now. Many more exciting features are on the way! Keep an eye out here on the Spiral Knights forums for details on the above projects, and more.

So as always, thanks for playing Spiral Knights!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things they said they would implement:
-Changes to Rank Missions
--->Continuing story of the Artifact
--->New Primary Antagonist
--->Framework for expanding missions past Vanguard rank (10-2+)
-New T3 Boss
--->New mission arc after FSC (Post-Vanguard, or moving vanguard further back?)
--->New boss monster
-Challenge Mode
--->Cooperative Mode (Most likely means PvE)
--->Competition with other teams for high score
--->Rewards
Things they have implemented:
Arcade Redux Part 1
-Gates
--->Removed Gate Construction
--->Everything else associated with ^
-New Pickups
--->Barriers
--->Artillery
--->Recon Ranger
--->Not Ultra Poison barrier or Auto Turret Kit
-Lore
-Opening Cutscene/comic thingy
Lore Update
(Spoilers, if you care)
-Lab
--->Looks different when stuff like Herex stealing the Artifact happens
-Missions
--->Added SputterSpark to some missions
--->Lore update: Herex corrupted by Swarm
--->Mysterious Round mechanical things added on the ground in the treasure rooms of RJP and FSC
--->Retconned the reason for going to RJP to "strange energy signature" from "Alpha Squad Recon Module"
--->Changed the Rescue Camp story for the umpteenth time, now you kill Razwog and take the artifact
Things that line up between what they said they would do and what they did:
-Continue (or change the existing part a lot) the story of the Artifact
-Framework for more missions later
-...nothing else
