The Ideology of a Preview Player

Firstly, let me start off by saying, I've enjoyed seeing Spiral Knights grow in community and content. Over the past year I've experienced the ups and downs of Spiral Knights and am dealing with Three Ring's decisions, daily.

But basically, receiving a lazily re-textured armour for being a participant in the preview event was a big let down.

I know I'm not entitled to any special treatment or special items over other players, but to miss out on all of the fantastic gear and features (more-so the gear) when they've previously been implemented and had worked properly, seems like a shame for them to go to waste.

What I'm getting at is the fact that there's a plethora of gear sitting in the game folders that aren't even obtainable, but would make an ample addition to the game's content. Specifically, what I am addressing is the preview-age gear.

I'm talking about Magikat Hats/classic Wolver, the old Angelic models, when CIV looked like a ripstik and had Damage Vs Undead: Ultra, etc.
These models (if they were to be re-implemented) should only be available to preview players since all we have to show for being a part of the preview event(s) is, basically, a fluorescent orange mining hat with a "B" on it with an armour to match.

I've been excessively eager to see the return of these ex-items, but have not heard anything concerning such matters.

As a fellow preview player, I

As a fellow preview player, I agree with you whole-heartedly on this. Sure, it was pretty awesome to get even Groundbreaker as a reward for helping out during the preview, but I can't help but feel a little fobbed-off with a lousy re-texture

Just saying.

Perhaps so

But if those preview-only items were only available for preview players, well, it's inevitable that quite a few players are going to get pissed off.

Let them be pissed off

Let them be pissed off, it's no fault of anyone else but their own concerning the date that each person joined up to SK. They have the right to be pissed off, however people that played during the preview event and even longer after that are considered loyal players. It just seems to me that Three Rings implemented gradual changes that altered the game beyond recognition freely allowing their loyal playerbase to stray off and take interest elsewhere which has effectively turned "Groundbreakers" into a minority giving us little to no voice in what happens to this vision of an almost "perfect" game that we enjoyed helping the Spiral Knights Dev team create. Originally I thought SK was going to be a fun, "Zelda styled", MMO that could've been the one game that I stuck by through thick and thin, but it's been difficult to do that with all the things Three Rings have done, a lot of their decisions have collectively resulted in a massive loss of original players.

I feel cheated out of being a loyal player because Three Rings have pretty much developed the game with most of (if not all of) their rapidly increasing, 'newer' playerbase in mind, even if that meant compromising the game's real needs to find and cater to new players. A recent example of this is the change to the character creation system that allows newly-to-be-created knights the choice of 2 accessories for their gear, the option to change your eyes and your height. Not a massive change, in my opinion, but still retains the purpose of appealing to a wider audience rather than seeing to the people that helped craft the dawn of Spiral Knights as we know it. I'll link to that character customisation petition at the bottom of this post if anyone's interested.

So, while the long term players are taken for granted and get diddly' squat, the newer players get in on the latest features and updates while we're left in the dark.

I think it'd be very gratifying to see some of the older gear implemented back into the game for us loyal players because a lot of us adored the look of the models in their 'original' state during the preview event(s), i.e. The Wolver (cap, specifically) had a massive graphic change from preview to release.

I'm putting up gear/equipment for suggestion because other than gear, the only other main point to discuss is reverting game features to previously superior states, like like game in pre-"doomsday" patch state when everything wonderful was abundant and flourishing, but asking for changes to game mechanics and game features of this calibre would send me to the equivalent of the Graveyard section since game changes come under the category of being too tedious and unprofitable to cater to what is now seemingly the minority, but the addition of preview event gear is a much more realistic goal. I'm going to go ahead and say that it'd be a lot easier to inject preview event models back into the game because the models and textures are already there, they're just sitting in the "rsrc" folder, gathering dust.

As Kenjiro said, maybe I wouldn't be so fobbed-off if they changed their sights to their long-term playerbase for a minute and let us have the gear with the models that we so dearly loved.

Well.

While even though I came in 3 days after release in this game, and not actually during "preview" I can't complain at the idea of adding items that are still IN the game, but not available to the player base simply because they have a different model.

Even being a person who wasn't in preview, I would see this as a pretty cool thing to have. Perhaps it should be related on how long people played this game after it was release. Kind of like how TF2 did their medals.

If they do give items for preview only, I won't be mad though. It'd still be cool.

Shockingly, this is not a necro thread

Preview players got to play the game for months (or more) at a reduced price, then got back all their energy purchases- with a bonus- when the game launched. That's a big reward right there.

As for item models, I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to bring back the old wolver mask and angelic models. They were... generic place holders at best, and frankly kind of ugly. The popularity of angelic gear back then was due to global damage bonuses, not any desire to look like a pink marshmallow.

The current system of one specific, beta-only item is clean, uncluttered, and to the point. Why would the devs want to hand off new preview rewards a year after that was over, instead of finding enough customers to keep the game viable in the long term???

I agree preview players deserve something more (though I am not one), and the groundbreaker really doesn't look that great.

But if they dare make the Magikat Hats preview player only, I will rage.

I don't know how playtime

I don't know how playtime would be managed for the acquisition of preview-model gear, or if it could even work.

See, if it was managed by play time, people would say, "Well I only joined a week after release so I should get to access to the preview-model gear really..." and others would say "Well I only joined 3 days after release so what about me?", and it get's to the point where people are saying they only joined a day or a matter of hours after release, which eventually starts blending the non-preview players with the preview players because it doesn't seem like there's a set point at which you can identify preview players from post-release players just by judging played time, other than utilising Groundbreaker as a token of authenticity/proof, which seems to be the most viable option.

So there's too fine a gradient of who would be eligible, or rather how much time after release you joined to be eligible to be included in this batch of players that have access to the preview-model gear, but don't have Groundbreaker.

Please excuse any grammatical errors or badly worded parts. :)

You can have more stuff for being in preview as long as it's cosmetic.
I dont want to see 'pros' running with super gear no one else can obtain.

Last thing I want to see is unobtainable super-gear. Or unobtainable gear in general. The one exception is Groundbreaker, because it's already here.
And for the record, expansion rewards aren't unobtainable, they just cost a penny. You can get it any time, it just depends on how much you want it to spend money on it. Just putting that out there before people start going on about it.

Cosmetic items? Sure. Have 'em. But my collector self is going to peeved.

Makes little sense to suddenly reward preview players a year after the games release. It'll just piss off everyone else.

In fact, I'm pretty sure you're only saying this because you're a preview player yourself. If you weren't you'd say it's a stupid idea.

@Pauling - Well quite frankly

@Pauling - Well quite frankly I actually liked the old gear style, whether you think they were generic place holders or not, I think they fit the style of the game well and should see no reason other than jealousy that people would complain, the difference between our two opinions is that I actually want change to happen where as you probably wouldn't bat an eyelid whether this change became reality or just sunk to the bottom of the forum's abyss. Do you honestly think it'd be that damaging to the game if preview players got the choice of being able to equip the older models that they prefer over the current models?

@Juances and Shidara - Yes, of course, they'd have to be cosmetic, same resistances, same stats, but with a more familiar appearance. It'd be the only way because, should Three Rings decide to remake preview-model gear from scratch with new resistances and buffs/effects, it'd cause far too much butthurt for newer players due to the fact that they can't get them.

@Sacrontine - It makes even less sense that they removed this gear from the game in the first place, in my opinion, it was really good looking gear and since it ties in with the preview so well, I can't help but to request it be added for people sporting Groundbreaker. All the preview-model gear would need is like, an "Archaic" or maybe "Antique" prefix or something of the sort, so we could equip "Archaic Angelic Helm"/"Antique Angelic Mail"/"Archaic Wolver Cap" etc. You get the idea... To add to that, we'd not be per-say "rewarded" with this gear, we'd be simply re-planting it right back into the game from it's roots to give preview players a chance/choice to sport the gear models that they originally remember.

I can't see why preview players getting the chance to wear some of the older models would cause such objections. Is it too much to ask to re-add some models into 'new' items that are sitting in the game folders doing nothing?

Really, why should you get

Really, why should you get something extra for being in the beta at all? Its a kindness by OOO that they let you get that mining hat in the first place. I'd like to see it on the featured auctions tomorrow.

I'd love to see new items with models from the preview, but not if 99% of all the players cant get them. Being worthless due to joining after launch is already bad enough... so why add insult to injury?

Literally the only thing I

Literally the only thing I want.
The one thing.
Nothing else.
Is a way to show off Artifacts.
Give us a new equipment slot, make them some kind of rare drop or achievement award or SOMETHING and then let us equip them. As of right now they are useless bits of data and I don't always feel like wearing my Groundbreaker armor.

Seerusly? The only thing I can come up with would be a 'Back in my day...' emote where you add on an endpart or something.
