The Future of Spiral Knights

This new update's got everyone in a tizzy, from arguing about the economy to how the crafting/forge system are great, horrible, a crime against humanity, and everything in between. Actually, I haven't seen the community around here so divided since... well, I wasn't around for the Auction House update, but from what I've heard about it, that was pretty bad. I'd also compare this to the Shadow Lair update, but let's face it, that one wasn't as dividing as this update is.

So touching on a few points I've heard argued on the forums over the past week:
-The supply depot sale is going to send the economy down the toilet, due to merchants not being able to trust the value of items over time.
Countering this, we have 'Items are meant to be worn as shinies, were never guaranteed as never coming back, and weren't meant to be hoarded'.

Then we have 'The crafting system and forging system are the worst things since unsliced bread, change it back'. Going against that is the argument that 'Now you can play Spiral Knights without having to spend a cent, which is what the game is about, right?'

And of course, the pro-pet forumers finally have their wish with the Battle Sprites.

More now than ever, I find forumers, in-game friends, and even friends that left the game long ago questioning the future of Spiral Knights. All points are being argued for and against, such as the potential of this 'crippled' economy, the future of gameplay and content, and of course, exactly where is all that content that we were promised? Tortodrone, Slooms, and the Core, I'm looking at you!

So my question to you, the forumers, is not what you think of updates past. My question is, if you could bring 3 things into Spiral Knights into the future that might help to save the game in any way, shape, or form, what would they be and why?

I'd remove the new user interface or make it optional.

I'd bring back mist energy.

I'd get rid of the forge.

If I could have four, I would bring health revives back, but those are the main three.

YES. YES YES YES 100/100 AND 5* FOR YOU :DDDDD

But then I was like:

My Top 3

Sorry for making a late post. It took me a while to get these thoughts solidified and hammered out onto the forums. So here they are:

1. Get rid of the Featured Auctions, improve Lockbox drop odds, and make it known that Lockboxes have increased rare drop odds.
What that does: -May increase CE buying due to increased odds.
-Will bring some old merchants back (I know I would) to play the accessory market and
- Gets more rare accs out to those who want it

2. Get rid of non-Prestige and non-Tutorial missions. What this does: Revives the arcade. There's no Mist left, so people have no excuse that it's a waste of Mist to do 4 depths before FSC or whatever. It also provides more items by extension, i.e. 8 depth's worth of drops for a full FSC compared with 4 depth's in a mission.

3. GIVE US CONTENT. Less promos. More Content. Make the PROMOS ABOUT THE CONTENT. Take the Tortodrone for example. Here's what OOO could do. First off, release Tortodrones into the clockworks. Maybe make a Prestige mission about it. Now for the promo part, if we want to do this the 'F2P' way we could model it off the Winter/Birthday events and make people fetch tokens. If we don't want to do that, we could make either a Pay-To-Play mission (pay 100 CE to run it each time, get goodies from it) or stick with our standard furniture-and-shinies promos.

I like that i don't have to

I like that i don't have to spend Mist to craft items now adays, it was a gigantic wall to climb for people that weren't going to/able to spend money on the game. Honestly, i like the changes made with the game this update, it makes it way more free-player friendly while encouraging buying mist to get a bump in crowns. If anything i'd like to see MORE sets and weapons, the biggest reason people stay playing, especially after completing their rank missions.

@Spinex

I read you loud and clear on that. That's why I'm trying to fixate not so much on what's happened, but what we can suggest to improve the future.

@Kramy I also read you on that. Agreed, it makes it much easier to play the game. The problem with more sets and weapons is, we need more expansion to do that. Maybe more than four 'elements'. Maybe more than six or seven generic 'statuses'. Maybe more than four standard bosses and a scattering of hit-me-once-or-twice-or-however-many-times Prestige/Mission bosses. Hell's bells, this game has no plot! Give us a plot! Anything! The thing is, we can't have MORE weapons or armor without expanding our universe, since everything that's going to come is just a rehash! I mean, the Shadow Lair armors were pushing the rehash button with every inch of their scaly/furry/metallic surfaces.

I can admit that the forge wasn't a bad idea since it was to balance mist energy removal, but if it was for that then the mist energy should return if the forge leaves.

I'm with ya, Xairathan!

I'm inclined to agree, if their were something like a clock-work element that built up damage with each hit, lets say a four hit combo with moderate damage, then the fifth doing a LARGE amount of damage, i'd be game. Maybe a story about the clockwork grinding to a halt and the knights having to delve to its depths to re-energize it, ANYTHING would be good!

As for the metalic/scale/furry style of armor, what would you suggest? I'm not really sure what other materials they could use, though i admittedly would love to see some of the armor worn by the NPC generals as craftable sets :x

If the forge leaves, I don't see how Mist really balances that out. I'm looking at this from all comprehensible angles and can't get a solid connection. Say we cut the Forge only, bring back the regular Heat system. It's still a royal pain in the arse to level things from 3* and up to a full Heat lvl 10. The old system required, to bring two 4* items to lvl 10, a Heat Amplifier, 3 teammates sacrificing heat to you, and a full run through Firestorm Citadel. If we erase the Forge, we still have the difficulty of leveling up items, although I do admit that undoing the Elite/Advanced/Normal difficulty scaling would be.. well, difficult.

If the Forge leaves and we re-introduce Mist, that's not going to do anything except make new players quit earlier, which isn't what OOO wants, and let's face it. With Missions still around, and if 3 people are willing to help, it takes 2 FSC runs at most to lvl 10 those 4* gears. It's relatively the same.

Edit: @Kramy, I'm not suggesting that entirely new breeds of armor, i.e. feathers, be made. I'm simply saying that if we want to expand our arsenal-base, we need more content. I'll go out on a limb and pretend we get Pillow-type enemies introduced. Let's see. Make them have Fluff damage. That's an armor and a weapon right there. Now give them the Sleep status. That's content we were promised right there. Now meld that Fluff type with Shadow/Pierce/Ele/Normal weapons and armor. Now make a Sprite for it. CONTENT!

It's for balance. If we have unlimited mist, we can blaze through heating.

@Cirnothebaka

Well, you briefly explained. You shouted "YES!" when I said I would remove the forge, and you didn't say anything about getting it reworked however you negatively voted to me bringing back mist energy therefore your argument is very fallacious.

The Forge

The problem with the Forge is it's so... I don't even know how to describe it. I'll say 'unforgiving'. It's so unforgiving I don't know where to work out the kinks. We have the following problems:

-If you get 3 level's worth of heat, you can only advance one.
-If you're heating in FSC, the most popular place to heat, you can't even access the Forge in the run
-You require Heat Crystals to heat things, and if you're trying to get 3* to 4* whilst in FSC, you're hunting down the wrong type of Sparks

What I'd propose for a fix, I suppose, would be to turn excess heat into crystals, and convert Crystals to have a sort of 'CE value'. Now I'm not talking about turning Heat into CE. I'd say make a parallel system, i.e. 1* heat = 5 heat, while 5* heat = 50 heat (just an estimation). Now make the Forge not only able to make a lvl 2 into a lvl 3, but USE those heat values to turn level up in Haven. Here's what would follow.

I run one depth of FSC with a lvl 1 4* gear. The heat values for that gear are 100 heat at lvl 1, 110 heat at lvl 2, etc. etc. I gather 400 heat value in the run. My gear reaches the max of the lvl 1 bar and I retain 300 heat value in crystals. I go up to Haven and use the 300 heat value to level my gear. Sound okay?

I want a Mini-Trojan on wheels on a string.

I want a Mini-Trojan on wheels on a string. (Like those kid toys.) Optionally with random dash-forward-[WHAM] animation!

I want a gourdling to follow me around Haven/Guild Hall. Same for Scarab. That as costumes for Sprite would be fine.

More seriously. I don't feel the atmosphere of the world/story behind Spiral Knights, it's all kind of just data, and the appealing bit is meeting friends and doing stuff with them. I am not sure how that can be solved. I do know that I like monster home levels best, and the atmosphere of Concrete Jungle, Dark City, Devilish Drudgery.
From the first day I wondered about the point of the empty corridors of the Tunnel levels. Up, down, around a corner, nothing to see here, nothing happens.

Maybe something surprising happening in Haven now and then is one step towards more atmosphere. (I certainly liked the NPC carrying in crates.) Even better if it's a threat you have to meet, not just animation.
I need that atmosphere before I start thinking about the Core. So far the not opened Core is kind of; "Pfftt, whatever. Hey [friend name], let's go beat up some monsters in an interesting level."

Not to leave my silly start of this post unused: How about monster cages that you can use to catch your own monster (accessory/costume for sprite)? Put it in the supply depot for a few k energy.
On that line, I'd like future promo items there, and just keep boxes for token hunts and stuff like the special ones we get right now.

I don't know how that could save the game, or if that's needed (the recent update was great already, I trust the developers to know what they're doing).

If I have a wish, gimme the old UI back; crowns and energy visible at all times, no honking big picture of me (nor the new version of party pictures without discernible Hp), no activities menu hidden under the Arsenal, no Arsenal blocking minimap just to see my crowns/being in Auction House.

And a Mini-Trojan on wheels on a string!

Btw, my counter to the Forge complainers: What's the rush, play the [insert your favorite adjective] game!
Your counter is kind of invalid; I don't have money online and can't spend any cent on the game. OCH and Guardian pack were Steam gifts. (I'm saying, you could "play Spiral Knights without having to spend a cent" all along.[*])

More on what else you said...

I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of Battle Sprites, but I've grown to like The Thing aka Fatso. :)

I play more, not just coming in to not let the free mist go to waste, crafting something, and tending my AH mails. I now wander about levels alone (used to be boring), while watching something. I like NOT rushing. :)
I notice that Elite actually seems easier than gameplay was before the update, and I SUCK. Was it really health sharing that had me die so much more? (Btw, I'd like old monster AI, I keep seeing people mentioning it, it was before my time, and, well, beating something that's scary is more fun than just mowing down a pack of whatever. And I totally don't 'get' "challenge".)

I don't really care about in-game economy. All that matters is that those working on the game get paid for their work.

[*] But after 1.5 years of fun and piling up crowns and energy WITHOUT grinding I am wondering how to support the folks that do all the work for the game. Maybe that mobile phone thing that a friend mentioned, just need to get a simcard first.

(PS, is anyone still reading the spam Cirno dumps in every thread? I just scroll past.)

What would I like to see featured in Spiral Knights

Have a large scale PvE event every weekend as in hundreds of Knights participating in a huge boss/map with monthly prizes for greater replayibility. PvP large scale. Not the CS/TF game rooms we have currently which is so boring, Red versus Blue, Orcs versus Human etc-duking out on a huge map with casualties everywhere. But for all this to become possible, first they need to upgrade servers and lessen the lag for more players around the globe to enjoy.

-large scale PvP war events. Think Risk Your Life/Knights Online/Shadow Run. Old games with great replayable factors which had active players rather than just forumers.
-large scale PvE Boss/Map events.
-monthly prizes/weekly prizes for these events.
-a glory room for the monthly winrars.
-get a better server to run SK.
-make these features free from any charges CE/CR.
-Profit from players buying CE on getting to the top with quicker chances through item purchase etc.
-one huge server for a single town and segregate chat rooms to avoid clutters so there's an actual MMO feel. <3

But all this isn't possible due to BS lag and short term vanity profit. But so far I loike them sprites.

More minigames in the Coliseum
  • Maybe a survival thing like Tf2's MvM.
  • Or an infinite arena-like game, where you get limited vials, pills, and vitas, and as you advance, the difficulty slowly climbs up.
  • Bribe Krogmo for vitas and stuff.
  • The only rewards from the Coliseum are the Krogmo coins. No other loot will drop from enemies.
  • Make it so rarities only drop in the Arcade
  • This will promote playing in the Arcade, as nothing but crowns and heat will drop in Missions.
  • Weekly player-made/player-suggested prestige missions
  • Constant content.
  • Actually, I should make #2 and #3 a suggestion in the Suggestion Forum.

    I think content will come,

I think content will come, and it will come sooner than later, it took OOO a lot of time to get away from the facebook-esque game and into a real MMO I think more and more will come, especially if we guide them in the right direction, now that we have "missions"(quest-lines) they can easily implement them via that.

the only issue now is whether they will be ignorant enough to sell them as "DLC" like this did with operation "we want more money".

The best thing they can do is add more content and unfortunately but intelligently follow that pattern of standard F2P MMO's by increasing the "level cap" with each new addition to keep us throwing cash at them, such as 6* and up level and gear.

But I'm not sure OOO doesnt have a great track record with being content creators, they just like to use and re-use content like dumpster divers.

The best we can hope for is they turned around on all their old, and short-sighted designs and have gotten a new a brighter future planned.

    2. Make rank missions un-replayable except for Hall of Heroes (revives the arcade [I know a lot more people are playing it now but this would actually make it the main focus of the game which is what it's meant to be] and it would make sense since they are rank missions)

    3. More content. More bosses (maybe a desert themed one or a beach themed one, there are so many possibilities). More levels (compounds were a great addition, more levels couldn't hurt). More battle sprites (or maybe just two more). There's tons of suggestions on the forums so maybe if they read those they could get some ideas.

    1. Sprite-tamer armor that yields duration and/or cooldown bonuses, but imposes varying weapon penalties (ASI, CTR, DMG)
    2. A way to convert different tier orbs and crystals (at a moderate penalty)
    3. A sprite-based minigame (for example, something akin to Chip's Challenge, but you try to kill your opponent with the hazards; your sprite can manipulate the environment using its attacks)
    4. More limited time CE sales of 'high tier' accessories.
    5. Tweaks and/or bugfixes, like making fully level-heated items not suck up heat, removing sprite bonuses from LD, perhaps reducing the bribe cost slightly.

    Meh

My job here is not to ensure stability within the economy and community throughout Spiral Knights, even though I, or any other person who truly understands the game can do. I simply sit back, and see what people will do next. Being the audience for a test for the Spiral kind. Although one thing is for sure, though I can not ensure when.

A huge darkness will come, one day, and the problems it takes with it will be completely different from the ones we "face" now. Although people have handled the update quite well, I can see that they still need to straighten up. If they don't start acting, and open eyes to reality, then who knows how they will face the darkness? For our next times we will have new leader before us, besides the veterans before us today, and whether they are mature enough to handle The, I don't know. The journey of Spiral Knights hasn't come to a close, yet. In a matter of fact, it's just starting, the game, how should I say it, has been, released.

    Monthly Goals

Implement a "War" or something of that nature.
Have a large bar in Haven, with a goal of "500,000 rare monsters (10% spawn rate) defeated."
Have each of these monsters drop exclusive materials or tokens.
At 25%, 50%, and 75%, release shops with themed items that get better and better (token shops)
At 100%, prepare a prestige mission with a permanent reward and a mini boss.
Also offer tokens with every 5 dollars of Energy purchased, and make the tokens available for Energy purchase.
This will encourage increased clockwork delving, careful consideration of minerals in
order to create appropriate stratum, as well as see an increase in Energy prices, and in some turn, revenue, for three Rings. A prize box at the end of it all would be nice, too.

This has been successfully implemented in a number of other mmo games, and I'm sure Spiral Knights would like new content over rehashes of the same items.

    For teamwork:
    1. Bring back health sharing for heat. Teamwork should be moe than kill the enemy faster.
    2. Make it so that the living party members shares all loot. Its annoying to pick up after your teammate opened the treasure boxes / killed enemies.
    3. Remove temporary invulnerability in Lockdown...

    For general gameplay:
    1. Rebalance weapons. Spiral knights is chock full of cool but useless weapons, shields and armor.
    2. Don't mess with popular weapons (sun shards); don't fix what isn't broken (antigua, brandish).
    3. Add new enemies with UNIQUE AI. Not drones or undead trojans.

    For crown/energy:
I give up. We've been given unlimited farming and a huge number of free revives. Which means the value of crowns is going waaaay down.

    @Bushido-Brownies

I am really sorry to be disagreeing with you again. I have to say that if OOO was trying to kill of players they did a pretty good job. I have DEFINITELY had more fun.

    > Now you can play Spiral

    > Now you can play Spiral Knights without having to spend a cent, which is what the game is about, right?

Wrong. Like you couldn't play for free before? I spend money on SK exactly three times - one to get OCH, one to get pass on test server and one to buy CE for friend, otherwise - everything I got by playing. I mean, I can give up sparks, orbs and unlimited levels just to get convinient heating up gear. Do you enjoy playing with subpar gear that crippled even further with low levels? I don't. Yeah, you get tons and tons of fire crystals on your way, but still.

Especially I call shenanigans on "fail chance". I mean, seriously? What's the point in reforging when two (especially first one - 20%, seriously?) of options basically means "Screw you, you just wasted time, you dumbgear!" and third requries spending a lot of time?

And before "well, you should play on Elite, there even more shinies!", then screw you, I could play Dust:AET on Hardcore and have more fun. Why should I obligate myself with high difficulties just to power-up (or I should say restore power, because lvl.10 4* weapons, for example, usually much stronger than lvl.1 5*) my gear

And yes, I'm spoiled F2P, who wants everything handed on golden plate. Just like SK before update handed it for us

Edit: Apparently I posted in wrong topic. But eh, whatever

    Before, every time you

Before, every time you crafted a 3* and higher you were burning through someone's money. It's that simple. Crystal Energy didn't fall off the trees, it came out of someone's wallet, you not realising this shows that you are indeed spoiled.

    Was that person, who's energy

Was that person, who's energy I just burned to craft for myself a fine sword unhappy about it? I doubt. He got money, and I got shiny sword. We both were happy. Now energy is near useless - why one should even bother with it when you can grind for some orbs and craft it just like that? Energy is now like Warframe's Platinum (or something. I'm not a big player of F2P MMOs) and their "Supply Depot", it gives you goods, but these goods are the same (except Slot expansions) as ones you can buy with regular money/craft normally. I have 2.4kce (not really OMG TONS OF MONEY) and I don't know what to do with it now

And my point was not about crafting, but Forge and reforging

    Outside of one-time mission

Outside of one-time mission rewards you can't get anything that is in the Supply Depot Material/Usable/Keys/Accessories sections without someone spending somewhere in the chain and that is already enough for energy to not be worthless.

Well. You can with energy get

Well. You can with energy get - slot expansions (not that you are really crippled without them. While 3rd slot for me is handy, I got used to play with two weapons and without trinkets), keys (do you really want to gamble with lockboxes through?), Shadow Keys, slot expansions and evo stones (even then you just need only 2 ultimate evo stones from there, if I remember correctly), if you're into pokemons. And Reset Star. Accessories for me not practical enough to spend tons of energy. Do you really need it on daily basis? Can't speak for everyone, but I don't.

Edit: And to think - is complains about changing from something convinient and easy to something stalling and not fun (not to mention gamble factor) = being spoiled?

And to think 2 - who in OOO came up with such ideas, who thought it was a good idea, who had final word and why nobody asked us (is constructive feedback is bug-report and nothing else? If so, why there are Test Server and Suggestions boards?) and went like "hey guys there's our new rules like them or not but this is how it's going to be played"

Edit 2: @Paweu - check your mail. It's too offtopic for here. Short answer - they're did. And that did nothing

    Uh, fire crystals were

Uh, fire crystals were actually on the preview, what wasn't was the removed mist. Players had time to give feedback on them, whether they gave, no idea, don't read those forums.

The 3 things I'd bring into

The 3 things I'd bring into Spiral Knights into the future that might help to save the game in any way, shape, or form:
    RESPECT
    RESPECT
    RESPECT

When game site owners/developers have no respect towards gamers, a gamers game and for themselves as a business entity they have foul attitudes that allow them to do things to the game that only serve self and upset their customers, ultimately pushing them away and leaving an abandoned site. I'm sure every gamer here knows of a site up and open that all the owners/staff have abandoned and is free for the hacking, phishing macros and everything else that people will do when unrestricted. I see the future of SK as an abandoned site and a game in a box (like Puzzle Pirates) sold by Best Buy and Amazon.

When someone sees a gamer gaming and says "WOW! I can make a site and pull in this no-life loser and take their money", they have created something they see as having no value other then leaching away game dollars from a gamer. The game is never anything more than a scam to them rather than something of value.

@Lord I am now going to fix

    @Lord

I am now going to fix your post.

"The 3 things I'd bring into Spiral Knights into the future that might help to save the game in any way, shape, or form:
    FORGE RETHINK
    FORGE RETHINK
    FORGE RETHINK

When game site owners/developers have no respect towards gamers, they change one system which no-one liked and put a new system which people like, but they shouldn't. I'm sure every gamer here knows of a site up and open that all the owners/staff have abandoned and is free for the hacking, phishing macros and everything else that people will do when unrestricted. When someone sees a gamer gaming and says "WOW! I can make a site and pull in this no-life loser and take away everything think they is good with a game", they have created something they see as having no value other then leaching away life force from a gamer. The gamer is never anything more than a victim."

    There we go :D

    @Cirnothebaka
That was obnoxiously rude. There was nothing wrong with my post, other than it not containing your opinion, and it certainly didn't need to be "fixed" with bad grammar and some idea you have and failed to communicate. Make your own statements rather than adulterating mine.
