I've recently played through the beginning again, And this got my head spinning.
1. I realized how much limitless potential the game has.
2. I thought about the surface a while, and I came up with something like this:
Why not have more surface levels? It would surely add more to the game, Not having to rely on elevators.
An upgraded map would be ideal for this idea, as It would help show where the players are and where they could go!
It would also mean that we could truly get a sense of how small we are, Inside or out of the planet.
As for the difficulty of each area on the surface, I believe that the map and difficulty should remain random, until you have discovered all the areas on that part of cradle.

What do you think? Comments would really help me decide how good or bad of an idea this is.
Also, If I'm copying anyone on accident, I'd like to know.

(Scrapped)
For the reverse engineering part, I've been thinking, Why not have some way to heal your allies? - It would certainly help, So why not have an item similar to that of a gremlin healing wand?

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

what would surface levels add to the gameplay, and why would we need them? you say that it would add soemthing without specifying.
besides, the energy of the core on the surface is very weak, and the monsters will probably be very weak.

as for healing, no. it would be too much powerful to handle. even slow and with risks, you can do a tactical retreat and heal, or you could heal after every battle, and so the game difficulty goes poof.
I would also be glad to say that Nick didn't want to add any sort of healing except what we already have, but I don't knoe how valuable is this statemement right now.

Well, It my be true, but...

Another question we should be asking is why not? The healing, fine- But the surface would mean a lot more, And who's to say that *Ahem* the core can't redirect power on it's own free will? For what it would add to the gameplay- Perhaps there are some locked elevators (Code lock, etc) Or maybe there are materials you can get only on the surface? I can't give an exact answer right now, As i need several days to mull over the topic in my head, to come up with a/several good reasons, Seeing as I just thought of the subject today.

I make you black, bluue and red all over

I made a similar thread a while back about adding levels to the surface. It didn't get much support, but I still think it was a good idea. So +1 to surface levels.

But as Thunder said, the game would not benefit from a new healing mechanic as it would just make the game too easy.

surface levels

I completely agree with more surface levels. The surface world is huge and we have only explored a small piece of it. It could be made to feel less mission based with exciting new levels that feel slightly different then the clockworks. Exploring the surface could allow you to find new enemies, items, and secret ways into the clockworks. This could greatly improve gameplay it is done right.

YES!

I was just about to make a new thread about this.
I completely agree with you.
It feels like I've been playing the same maps over and over again.
The game will definitely become more interesting and refreshing if we got to explore the surface (maybe underwater as well?).

So ya. +1 for me :)

What's so interesting on the surface?

To quote Hahn, because he knows everything: "Teir 3 is closest to the core and much like how high level items respond to its power, so do monsters. Many of them take on new forms and are considered at their most dangerous. You must prepare before taking on each mission."

Further from the core means weaker weapons and monsters. If you find a way to make this still interesting, more power to you, but right now it sounds pretty dull.

+1 Two words

Free. Roam.

This game has some sexy scenery, we could chillax and take a stroll along the surface? We could find other towns, more strangers, exclusive items, and probably new elevators to other parts of cradle? That's what it would add (the elevators mostly)

As for healing, here's my suggestion.

You can combine 3 health capsules for a healing pad, but it is very slow, like some of the ones in FSC. The T1, T2,and T3 heal 1,1.5, and 2 pips respectively.

healing pads present the same problem as all the other healing devices: you can retreat and heal infinitely. the most successful way to implement healing in the game has already been implemented, it's called heart attack.

Um.. Excuse me?

So, if enemies get harder the deeper you go, then how does Mount Krampus make any sense? It is clearly on the surface, and some people called it the hardest mission yet!

Mt. Krampus could be down in the clockworks...

There could be a different type of monster on the surface that is either not effected or effected in a different way by the Core. But certainly lore-wise, the surface of Cradle has enormous potential, but I think it would not be handled well in the current SK format of depths and levels. Free Roaming would be a different game entirely.

...Spiral Knights 2?

Alright-

So yes, there are weaker things on the surface- UNLIKE the part before going to the rescue camp.
But, the thing is- A: Free roam (I need to stop feeling like a child living in his mother's basement for more than 10 years- (Even though I have never slept in one)
B: Just because the MACHINERY gets weaker, certain mobs stay the same. Why? We have to put in factor that gremlins DO USE the elevators, so why can't the other mobs?
Mobs only get weaker going closer to the surface because they never leave their areas. (Oooh, Fighting against other mobs as a mob? Nah.)
And if it's just a general rule that mobs will always be weaker on the surface- Wouldn't that be true about the knights too? It's almost like none of the gremlins have tried to contain energy, or experiment on certain mobs with said energy.

Knights did not come from Cradle, nor have they stayed on it for very long. The other residents have.

Also, knights are weaker on the surface. It's a fact that our weapons/gear react to the core and become more powerful the farther we go down. That's because our gear was made from materials native to the planet.

Alright, I suppose, But how do you explain-

How would you explain that stronger and better equipment needs less energy from the core? A 5* item on the surface still protects a lot more than that of a 1-0* item.

Because it's made of better materials.

Something different

Okay, what if their was other Towns other than Haven?
I think it would be interesting to add a few towns here and their and have players free roam about the surface areas

maybe the pathways around these areas could be scattered with low level beasts that are friendly until you attack them because they aren't as feral because of the core
they could make a new "profession" skill were when on these surface levels you could get Meat, Fish, Berries and Nuts etc and cook them into sprite food

and each town could have its own unique theme and maybe even each town has its own set of missions
they could give you recipes like the chromalisk gear and other sets that are not as popular so people have a little more incentive to craft them
