Hello all and welcome to my second fan fiction. This story is a sequel to Enter the Arena. Feel free to read it, but it should in no way impact this fan fiction. Most things should be cleared up even if you haven't read the previous story. For those who have read it, there should be a familiar cast of four fan-made knights and a certain gremlin along with all your favorite NPCs from the game.

Additionally, those who have read the previous fan fiction may notice a name change for one of the knights. Formerly named “Kora,” she is now Paprika (Rika for short). Changes have been made to the previous fan fiction to reflect this change. People who haven't read the first fiction or just started should not be affected.

This story will focus on the Shadow Lairs update and Core theories. I have been working on this piece since I finished “Enter the Arena” – since about late November/ early December. Despite being started months ago, there may be references to recent patches. And of course, some things may be different than from actually playing the game. (Like armor/weapons that doesn't make sense for a fight and other things.) Along with things that are common suggestions, such as spears, magic, and so on.

Please feel free to point out any misspellings, forum to HTML code errors ([i][/i] tags), or any other errors. I read through my work before I post it, but sometimes I miss things.

The story will be updated 1-2 times a week, but may become slower/faster depending on how close the story catches up to me while I write.
I am sometimes having issues connecting to the forum, so this may also interfere with story updates.

Chapter 1: In My Dreams

Chapter 1: In My Dreams

It was daylight in the vast regions of one of the harshest climates on Isora, home planet of the Spiral Knights. Today was one of the hottest days of the week in most of the other climates, but the heat was multiplied exponentially in the desert. To make matters worst, the wind was starting to pick up, kicking up the grains of sand and swirling them around. The sand drifted along, rising over the dunes and along the uneven horizon the settled sand had created. The sand seemed to be attracted to a city within the desert.

The town that stood against the buffeting sand storm was like a scene out of a western movie. The buildings were made out of wood, metal scraps supporting the parts of the buildings that were weak or decaying from the constant beating they took. Scarcely anyone was outside with the approaching sand storm coming. The few that seemed to be outside were already trying to seek shelter, whether it be in a store or their own home.

There was only one thing that seemed out of place in this town that stood against time. Parked at the heart of the town, by a building called The Quickdraw Armory, was a small metal ship, something that seemed far more advanced for this ancient looking town. The vehicle was compact enough that it fit despite the size of the unpaved street in the town. What it lacked in width was made up for in being long and elaborate. The craft seemed to resemble a bird, its front slanted in a curved beak shape. A bubble of glass sat in the front, with a knight garbed in Azure Guardian armor at the wheel. The vehicle had wings on it, which were collapsed and angled upward to the sky. In the back, the body of the ship slanted upwards to house a set of propulsion systems, arranged in such a way it resembled a bird's tail. Another knight was standing besides the wings of the ship, where a door was opened.

The door to the armory shop opened and a red knight stepped outside of the store. The female knight had on a dark brown aviation cap, complete with goggles on the top. She had a tattered black scarf around her mouth and neck. She had on a light brown jacket, long enough to be a thigh-high dress with fluffy white trimmings on the arms and bottom. A belt rested asymmetrically around her hips. Her pants were black. To top it off, she had on dark brown boots, covered in white fluff at the top like her coat. She set down two suitcases as she motioned to the knight beside the metal craft in acknowledgment. “So, it's time to head out?” the knight spoke in a warm tone to the knight.

The knight nodded, “You must be Phoebe? I'm sure you know why we are here.”

“You accepted me into the Spiral Order and are going to train me for further missions in service to our people.” Phoebe replied.

“If you are all packed and have said your goodbyes, we should begin our trip back to the city. There's a dust storm rolling in, we shouldn't tarry.” the knight said.

“I'm almost ready.” Phoebe said looking back at the armory.

The door behind her was ajar as an older looking blue knight and a purple knight garbed in western attire looked towards her.

“Phoebe.” said the female purple knight as she stepped closer to the girl, “My little girl is growing up before my very eyes. It seems like yesterday you were just barely learning how to walk, now you're heading off on your own to become a full-fledged knight.” The woman placed her hands on Phoebe's shoulders, “I'm going to miss you.”

“I'm going to miss you too, mama, but I'll make sure to visit whenever I have the chance.” Phoebe replied. She looked over to the blue knight as he stepped forward.

“Phoebe, I know you'll bring honor to our family and the business.” the blue knight said, reaching for the girl's hands, “You'll do good in the academy, I'm sure of it, but don't forget all the lessons we've taught you either.”

“I'll do my best, papa. I'll show them what our family's gun slinging heritage is all about.” Phoebe said. She extended her arms wide to embrace her mother and father in a hug. As her arms wrapped around her parents as best she could, she glanced down to a purple knight that was smaller than her. “Trista...” she said softly to the small purple knight.

A younger female knight with a white cowboy hat and red bandana glance up at her. The girl had a light brown long-sleeved shirt on, with a white west. She also had a long white skirt on, with side slits, revealing dark brown chaps underneath. She also had on cowboy boots with spurs. Trista simply stared, tears welling in her eyes.

Phoebe lowered to Trista's height, grabbing a handkerchief out of her pocket and dabbing the girl's eyes. “Trista, why are you crying?” she asked.

“Why do you... have to leave... Why now?” Trista choked out. Her hands clamped down on Phoebe's wrists. “I don't want... you to... go... !” she cried.

Phoebe released her hand from Trista and hugged her. “There, there. I know it sucks to be leaving especially after your birthday, but cheer up. You're old enough to start applying to become a Spiral Knight just like me. And you're so good at using a gun too, I bet you'll be able to train with me in no time! Besides, it's not like I'm leaving forever. I'll do my best to come back and visit.” she chimed.

“Why can't I just come with you now?” Trista sniffled, attempting to calm her sadness.

“You have to show them how good you are first, just like I did.” Phoebe said. She pulled Trista away and stared her in the eyes. “I know, what, I'll give you something to keep up that practice with?” Phobe pulled back her jacket and reached for a holster on her side. “I'll let you use my very own gun. I bet they'll let you join me in a few days!” she giggled. Phoebe handed the gun to the girl and stood back up. “I should get going now.” she said.

Her parents nodded to her, watching the red knight pick up her luggage and head towards the ship. The knight nodded to her as well, heading inside. Phoebe stepped in after the knight, turning to wave before they departed.

Her family waved in return as the door began to close in front of Phoebe. The ship began to lift off the ground, kicking dust up from the sandy street underneath it. After the ship had lifted up above the buildings, the wings of the ship spread out and it zipped away into the distance.

Trista continued waving for as long as her arm could bear. When she could stand no more, she looked down at the gun, which resembled an autogun. She could feel the tears beginning to leak from her eyes again as she stared down at the weapon. “Phoebe...” she whimpered.

The scene began to warp and distort around the gun, the desert and the town disappearing into black. The only thing remaining was the gun and the words Phoebe echoing in the darkness. All at once the gun faded away, focusing on the knight known as Phoebe. The red knight seemed older now, but her armor was still the same.

Phoebe was standing in what seemed to be a rather large space craft. The room was filled with a large array of knights, but barely anyone was standing by a large window that looked out towards the far reaches of space. Most of the knights were socializing, allowing Phoebe the chance to get a good view of the cosmos. She placed her hand up against the window, a warm feeling flowing through her body as she stared at a planet outside.

“Phoebe...” came a voice.

Phoebe removed her hand from the glass and looked for the voice. There standing before was a purple knight dressed in dark brown armor. It looked similar to her sister's armor, except that it was much darker like Phoebe's armor. “I'm surprised you found me, Trista.” she said, “There's a lot of knights from the academy here.”

“I asked around.” Trista said, “It was hard to get anyone to give me answers, considering you're much higher rank than me.”

“It's a shame they are so picky about letting recruits know anything about us veterans, but you're here now.” Phoebe said. She pointed out the window, “You should look at the view, it's so beautiful.”

Trista stepped closer and looked outside at the planet before them. It seemed strange. The planet seemed to be a patchwork of land, some areas of the land itself split open revealing strange lights under the land. The planet seemed to have a golden craniometer around it. Pieces of debris floated around the planet.“Is that a planet?” Trista questioned.

Phoebe nodded, “I hear that is our first destination.”

“What are we doing there exactly?” Trista asked.

“Exploring the planet and studying its life.” Phoebe said, “And if we find the planet suitable, we are going to land and search for energy.”

“But Isora has an energy field that revolves around it, why would we need to search elsewhere?”

“The energy that sustains life on our planet won't last forever, Trista. The Spiral Order believes we will have to find alternative sources in the future, or figure out how to keep Isora's energy from disappearing. We're hoping there are other planets out there like ours who have solutions or can at least help us.”

“I don't remember hearing anything about that...” Trista said, thinking.

“I guess you need to pay attention more!” Phoebe giggled, “But right now we're going to be taking scans of the planet and we'll probably land short--”

The ship began to rock and creak, throwing the knights in the room onto the floor. The lights began to flicker, causing everyone in the room to look up in fear.

“This is your captain speaking, we appear to be having trouble with the ship!” a voice exclaimed in the loud speaker. There was static and noise as the captain continued to speak. “We appear to be trapped in this planet's gravitational pull and will have to make an impromptu landing! To ensure everyone's safety, please report to your associated rank's escape room!”

The room began to roar with a thousand voices.

“Everyone!” Phoebe exclaimed, trying to calm the crowd, “Please remain calm and do as the captain said!”

The knights seemed to disregard her as they got up, some yelling and screaming, all of them running towards the doors.

Phoebe sighed as she reached for her sister, helping her up off the floor. “I think I can get you to your room with a shortcut, follow me!” she said grabbing Trista's hand.

The two ran to a door opposite of where the other knights were piling into. They raced down the somewhat empty hallway, rushing past a few knights. Red lights began to flash on and a siren echoed through the ship.

“This is your captain, this is an emergency. I repeat, this is an emergency. We are making a crash landing and need everyone to report to their respective rank's escape rooms! This is an emergency!” came the captain's voice through the loud speaker, along with the ear splitting static.

“Here we go!” Phoebe gasped as a sign with three stars appeared, pointing to the right. She turned, Trista in tow. The two made their way to a large metal door labeled with three stars. As they reached the door, it slid open, allowing them inside.

There were numerous panicked knights inside, each sprawling into spherical escape pods. All of them were frantic to get inside, their voices echoing in the large room. Phoebe scanned the room for an empty pod and ran over to it. “Here we go!” she said, leading Trista into the pod. She began buckling her sister in, making sure the belts were tight.

“Phoebe!” Trista shouted as best she could over the various sounds.

“And this goes like this and this over here...” Phoebe mumbled to herself as her hands darted across the escape pod, unable to hear Trista speaking.

“Phoebe!” Trista yelled louder than before.

“What's wrong?” Phoebe asked.

“You should get to an escape pod yourself, I can manage!” Trista continued to shout.

“I'll be fine.” Phoebe chimed, “Just a few more adjustments...” She continued messing with the restraints. “There!” she said, “I'll be on my way now.”

“Phoebe...!” Trista shouted, staring at the red knight.

“What's wrong now?”

“Take this.” Trista said, quickly reaching for a gun on her side. “It's your gun. I'd been meaning to give it back.” she said, handing it up to her sister. “I modified it myself.” she said looking down at her feet, “I thought you'd get better use out of it now.”

“Thanks.” Phoebe said. She began to push the escape pod door shut.

“Wait...!” Trista said.

“Yes.” Phoebe asked.

“How will I meet back up with you?” Trista asked, “It took me forever to finally find you on the ship. And just as I found you... now we're going to be separated again.” She could feel tears beginning to form. “I don't want to go through all this again.” Trista said.

“Don't cry Trista, we'll only be apart briefly. Once we're safe on the planet, I'll make sure my team finds you.” Phoebe said. She closed the escape pod door completely shut, waving to Trista as she ran off out of the three star escape room.

Trista stared out of the tiny window of her escape pod, barely able to hear the captain or the emergency signals through the sphere. It seemed as if she had sat there for eons, listening to the muffled sounds and the rumbling of the ship getting more violent by the minute. At last, it felt as if the escape pod had launch from the ship. Trista stared up at the Skylark, watching as it was crumbling and breaking. As she tried to look down, she could feel her eyes beginning shut. Her vision was becoming blurry and the colors distorted, becoming black at hazy. All at once her body became limp and she blacked out...

Chapter 2: Recurrence

Here's the next chapter, I have added a note about a character's name who shows up, in case it is needed.

==============================================

Chapter 2: Recurrence

It was mid-day in Haven and activity in the town was reaching its peak. Thousands upon thousands of knights were wandering the streets within the bazaar. Despite being an open air market, the crowds of knights and strangers packed in such close proximity was raising the temperature significantly.

Within the center of the crowds walked a purple knight garbed in cowgirl armor. Her face displayed disinterest in the activity going on around her. She kept her focus on the road in front of her with little movement of her head, save the pigtails that bobbed back and forth as she walked. The girl seemed set on a predetermined location as she escaped the crowd of eager shoppers and headed for the back alleys of the bazaar. The knight made her way to a building with a hanging sign that had pictures of books on it. She opened the wooden door and a bell chimed to alert the presence of someone coming inside.

The building was a library of sorts, with book shelves lining the entire perimeter of the building. Books, papers and pens were scattered among the floor and tables. At the back of the library, standing on a ladder, was a cyan knight wearing the entire grey feather set. Without looking, he spoke to the person who had just entered. “Hello, welcome to the Haven Library. The owner of this establishment stepped out and will return briefly. I would be happy to try and help you find what you need.” he said as he stretched his arm out to slide a book into an empty slot.

He turned his head to take a look at the customer. “What may I-- Oh, Trista! What a surprise!” the knight said. He quickly jumped off the ladder and faced the purple knight. “What brings you here? Did you want to venture into the Clockworks or do you have information for me to research?” he said in an excited tone. The knight adjusted his glasses from his leap to the floor. “I could see if the others want to come with.”

Trista shook her head. “That's not exactly why I came here, Flint. I wanted to see if you were free to just... um... talk.” she replied.

“Of course! I can spare a few minutes to talk!” Flint replied in a cheerful voice, “What did you want to discuss?”

“Well, I've been having this reoccurring dream recently. It's been taking a toll on me, I've been waking up in the middle of the night and I've started having trouble sleeping. I thought it might be time I discussed it with someone, to try and calm my emotions down.” Trista said.

“Well, I'm no dream expert, but I'll listen. Here, let me clear this table off and we can sit and talk.” Flint said as he tossed a bunch of books and papers into the floor. He pulled two chairs up to the table and took a seat at one.

Trista walked over and joined the cyan knight. She began to tell him about her dream and how it started in her home town, how it would jump to her being on the Skylark and up to the point where she was ejected from an escape pod. All the while, Flint sat and listened intently. He took every word in, keeping silent until she finished. “And as I black out, I normally wake up.” Trista finished.

“I never realized you had a sister, Trista.” Flint spoke, “Tell me, what was she like?”

“Well, my family was always close, but me and Phoebe didn't exactly see eye to eye. I was... jealous I guess you could say. Phoebe was the one who would have inherited the family business, she was the one who was going above and beyond in designing armor to be sold in the shop and she had even designed her own gun. She was so... perfect... She was always such a hard-worker and kept herself busy with things to do, helping others. And then she decided to push herself and join the Spiral Order, coincidentally when I was planning to. I wasn't exactly thrilled because she pretty much dug herself into a hole doing it. She had to put off armor smithing... and was forsaking the family business.

She never really seemed to acknowledge my feelings... She was always kind and helpful, but when it came to me, she didn't take me seriously.” Trista said.

“I see. So, is this exactly what happened in your life?” Flint replied.

“Not exactly. For some reason, I always seem to be much younger than I was when she left to the academy and I'm much more emotional. It was sad when Phoebe left, but I didn't bawl my eyes out. In fact, I was probably more mad than sad. I didn't want her to go.” Trista replied.

Flint thought about her reply. “And do you know where she is now?” he asked.

Trista shook her head. “I've tried finding out, but since she was a higher rank than me, I never got any answers. Even being a higher rank now myself, I've never been told where she could be.” she said.

“Hm.” Flint said in deep thought. He sat there tossing every piece of information he heard over in his head.

There was a long silence until Trista spoke up. “So, what do you think about my dreams?”

“Trista, have you ever considered that maybe deep down, you really admired your sister?” Flint asked.

“Well, of course I cared about her, I mean, we're sisters and all.” Trista said.

Flint shook his head. “I'm sure you did, but you said you two didn't see eye to eye and that you weren't very bothered by her leaving to train as a knight. Do you think that maybe, part of you just wishes you could go back to those points in time and maybe attempt to get Phoebe to understand your feelings?” he asked.

Trista looked at the cyan knight for a few minutes. “I suppose, maybe.” she said, unsure how else to respond, “I know I'd like to get in contact with her again, or at least know what she's doing now.”

The two were interrupted by a rather large creaking noise, it sounded like metal beginning to break under tremendous pressure. The noise was accompanied by the ground beginning to shake. Books and papers began to tumble out of their place on the shelves. Trista and Flint dove under the table they had been sitting at; protecting themselves from the falling debris. As the noise began to subside, so too did the shaking.

The two knights crawled back up from the table. They looked around at the mess of books and then to each other.

“There sure has been a lot of quaking these past months.” Trista said.

Flint became serious upon hearing Trista speak. “They say Cradle is no stranger to tectonic shifting, both on the surface and within the Clockworks.” Flint spoke, “But Thyme tells me that the increasing severity of this shifting is not normal. He believes something may be wrong in the Clockworks.” His voice became more calmer as he added, “It could be a reason to explore the depths. Maybe I could get Rika and Novus to join us. I'm sure some exploration and being with your friends would ease your mind as well.”

Trista laughed at this less serious remark. “I think exploring the Clockworks would always calm you down, Flint, but I guess I'll take up the offer.” she said, “And if you don't find your answers there, I'm sure a certain gremlin friend of ours might have some answers.”

“But what fun is there in simply asking for answers? Certainly the thrill of discovery first-hand is a much better feeling.” Flint joked.

“Perhaps, but I do know that you shouldn't do this without the best gunslinger around!” Trista said sarcastically with a flex of her arms.

Flint couldn't hold back from laughing. “Don't flatter yourself.” he chuckled. After a deep breath he continued, “Let me tidy up and then we can be on our way.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Trista said, “I'll go get the others.”

Chapter 3: Time of Change

I don't want to overburden anyone with tons of chapters, so there will be one update this week, possibly next week as well. This chapter may also seem out of place, and it could easily have fit as the first chapter, but I ended up placing it here as a "time passing" sort of thing. The rest of the story should iron itself out past this. ^^;

====================================================

Chapter 3: Time of Change

The artificial moon loomed above the Gloaming Wildwoods. A pair of knights had just arrived at the first land mass that was part of the Snarbolax's lair. A male dark purple knight in skelly armor was busy looking through an arsenal box. Standing beside him was a female pink knight in a demo suit.

“I don't see why we have to do Tier 1 patrolling. I'd rather be blowing up some mecha knights, or keeping devilites in check.” the pink knight groaned.

“Airi, it is our duty as--”

“Yeah, yeah, it is the duty of the Spiral Order to maintain the peace and ensure the safety of those in need of protection. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't have to do such a simple task by making sure the Snarbolax is in check. I mean, don't plenty of new recruits and first ranks do that job well?” Airi arched her back as it cracked, proceeding to do so to her other joints.

The male knight pulled out a hunting blade, examining it. “This was worth the work to create.” he said to himself. He turned to Airi, “Ok, let's go.” he said.

The two knights walked through the light blue wall of light into the wilderness that was the Snarbolax's lair. There was no movement in the grassy fields, save a dark and eerie mist that blanketed the floor.

Airi reached for a freezing vaporizer bomb attached to a bandolier strapped across her chest. “Do you see anything yet, Caden?” she asked.

Caden shook his head, “This place seems empty.” He stopped walking, holding his hand up to his companion to keep quiet. “I think I hear something.” he said in a low voice.

A faint yelp from some wolvers could be heard echoing in the distance. As the yelping stopped, a loud howl was let out, it seemed to be a sound of pain.

Airi gulped as she put a hand on Caden's shoulder. “I don't think I've ever heard anything like that before.” she said, “Should we follow the sound?”

Caden simply nodded, beginning to walk, Airi following suit.

The sounds grew closer, but no creatures were in sight thus far. The Wildwoods were empty, except for the sound of possible life in the distance. As they got closer still, they could hear rustling and the padding of paws. They stopped by a large set of boulders, hoping to ambush the wolvers.

“You know the drill.” Caden said, “We'll go on three.”

Airi chuckled as she primed the vaporizer in her hand. “This is the part I love.

Caden raised his hand and held up three fingers. “One... two...”

There was a loud roar from behind the rocks, followed by a howl.

“Charge!” Airi shouted, leaping on top of the boulder. She threw the bomb down to the ground below. As her eyes took in the sight on the other side of the rocks, she began to grew pale.

There on the other side was not one, but two Snarbolaxes, along with a bunch of wolver pups.

Airi began to slink down the rocks, her body trembling.

“What's wrong?” Caden asked.

Airi placed a hand over her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. She panted as she began to speak, “There were two of them...” Airi's voice was in a whisper, unable to get the words properly out of her mouth.

“What was that?”

The ground began to shake as large spikes began to pop up in front of them.

“There were... there were...”

A large greenish colored Snarbolax popped out of the ground and stared at them. It bared it's teeth as a foamy saliva dribbled out of it's mouth. The Snarbolax reared up as it howled, shaking the earth beneath it.

“Two of them!” Airi cried at last.

Caden stared at the giant beast in before them. He reached for Airi's hand, but before he could react, there was a loud noise behind them.

A second Snarbolax had peeked out above the boulders. It growled, saliva dripping from it's mouth as well.

* * * * *

It was the second depth of the Royal Jelly Palace. Three knights – two male and a female – were taking the final set of stairs to the end of the palace. The three had finished the four encounters to claim the keys to unlock the gates. The fights had tired them out, even climbing the stairs was draining. They heaved as they forced their legs to continue onward.

“Do we have anymore capsules?” a male red knight in dusker armor wheezed.

“No, I used my last one to finish off that lumber” another male red knight in gunsliner armor groaned.

The two looked to the female white knight in front of them. She had on what appeared to be armor made of plants and other various vegetation. Her helm almost seemed to be tangle of vines and leaves. The visor seemed to be a branch, which wrapped around the left side to the right, two large leaves adorned each side. Behind the visor poked two green beaded hair clips, which held her white hair up in loops. The top of the helmet was covered in long grass blades, which seemed to start at the base of the visor and eventually arch around the back to the bottom of the helm. The numerous bits of grass gave the helmet a feathered look. Upon the side of the helm was a tangle of vines, which helped keep the helmet it place. Her eyes seemed to glow much brighter than normal. Wrapped around her face, and covering her mouth was a set of large leaves. Their stems (which were green like the vines) wrapped around her neck and continued onward around the rest of her body, covering various parts of her arms, legs, and waist. The armor had shoulder pads, also shaped like a set of leaves, which had flowers resting on it. Her chest plate, in a similar fashion to her mouth guard, was also a set of leaves which wrapped around her, it's stems contributed to the tangle of plant life on her. Her leg armor was a large shirt which seemed to be made out of flower petals. Her gloves and boots seemed to be leaves fashioned into arm and footwear, with wooden branches providing extra strength/padding on the outside.

The knight had both her arms stretch out, in the palm of her hands rested a large metallic ring. In the center sat a green crystal which was shining brightly. The knight had her eyes closed as she whispered indistinguishable words. The crystal let out one final burst of green light, before it faded away.

The knight slowly opened her eyes, letting out a deep breath. “The Valestone has called out to the life that surrounds us. It answered my prayers and has granted us more energy to fight.” she said, “I can sustain our health for a few more battles, but I think the crystal's energy has been depleted for today, so please use this gift wisely.” She turned to the two knights, twirling the ring above her head. A green mist was released, surrounding the three.

The mist seemed to revitalize the three knights. Their encumbered bodies suddenly seemed perfectly fine. Both red knights stood tall, raising their weapons and shields up.

“I think we'll be fine!” the knight in dusker armor exclaimed.

The gunslinger knight nodded, ensuring his shadowtech alchemer was ready.

“Onward!” the dusker knight roared, drawing his nightblade back for a strong attack. He began to run for the center of the final chamber of the palace.

The gunsliner knight, followed behind him, with the white knight trailing farther behind them. As they all reached close to the middle of the room, the gate behind them closed shut. Two gun puppies raised from the ground, while the sound of slimes began to fill the room – their gelatin bodies materializing from the goo located around the room.

The white knight held the ring with both her hands as she shouted something in a strange language. As she spoke these words, the jellies were ensnared by vines. Her comrades didn't waste any time on quickly dispatching the jellies before they became free from their trap.

Once the jellies went down, both knights got to work destroying the gun puppies.

The white knight's focus was slowly drawn away from her team mates as she noticed a mist rising in front of her face. The air around them was beginning to grow cold, the heat from her breath causing the mist. “It keeps getting colder, the farther we go.” she whispered to herself.

“Behind you!” shouted the dusker knight. He frantically swung at the jellies around him, trying to clear a path.

Two lumbers were making their way up to the white knight. She immediately knelt on the ground, shouting another spell. Vines began to sprout at her feet, surrounding her in a protective bubble of sorts. The two lumbers raised their arms, striking instead at the barrier she had conjured. The knight continued to frantically pray, but the light within the ring was beginning to fade.

All at once, the lumbers were knocked backwards by a blue light. Their bodies began to spark electricity, until they both collapsed to the ground. The timing could not have been more perfect, as the energy from the crystal faded away, the vines vanishing back into the ground.

“Thanks.” the white knight said, standing up. As she faced the gunslinger knight, a small white puffball began to float down in front of them. Then another dropped, and another, and another, until suddenly the ground had become blanketed in white. She held out her hand in confusion, “Snow?”

The jellies began making strange noises. They had stopped bothering with the intruders, now seeking shelter within the slimy corners of the room again.

“Why is it so cold all of the sudden!” the dusker knight cried, shaking from the sudden drop in temperature.

“I don't like the looks of this, perhaps we should return back to town.” the gunslinger knight said.

The three quickly made their way to the elevator, setting their course back to Haven.

It was dark in the Ironclaw Munitions factory; not even the flood lights that lit the sides of the path were enough to fully illuminate the platforms. The only well lit area was the large center platform which was used to test Roarmulus Twin models. Upon one of the gear switches sat a green knight in mercurial mail. He had a voltedge across his lap, using it as a desk to write on a piece of paper.

“Let's see... shut down the missiles, check! Shut down power to the factory, check. Put a dent in the munitions factory, check check!” the green knight said excitedly as he marked the checkboxes on the list. “The only thing left to do is take down a set of twins for the day.” The knight hopped off the switch, raising a fist in the air. “Alright, the best part!” he exclaimed, “Nothing like keeping those gremlins in check so they don't destroy Haven!”

The knight sprinted for the center of the room, triggering a laser beam and causing the alarm to sound. He raised his sword, pointing it to the left side of the room. “Hit me with your best shot you rusty hunks of junk!” he taunted.

The sound of machinery and grinding metal eclipsed the sound of the alarm. The room began to shake as two massive rust colored gun puppies raised up into their spaces on both sides of the small room. As their eyes opened, fire erupted from them, their metallic surface seemed to erupt with cracks, magma flowing underneath. They both let out earsplitting roars, dripping lava out of their mouths.

The knight was taken aback by these much more aggressive looking gun puppies. He lowered his weapon and shield, mesmerized by the strange appearance. He quickly snapped out of it, entering a defensive stance. “Glad to see the gremlins stepping up their game!” he shouted, “I enjoy a challenge!”

The timing of the knight's words could not have been more perfect. The Roarmulus Twins, although simply programmed to do these actions, appeared to respond to the knight's actions by firing missiles at him.

The air was thick with the smoke from the smoldering ruins of Almire. Orbs of light and spirits that managed to have found a skull, floated around the broken castle walls. The dead groaned and wept for their kingdom despite the numerous years since its destruction.

Four knights made their way up to the corroded gate – the nightmare that was now called Firestorm Citadel. As they reached the blocked bridge, a lost soul began to speak to them.

“Turn back...” it groaned, “This path leads to nothing but death. If you value your life, you will go back whence you came.”

A female amber knight in seraphic armor peeked at the crumbling empire before them before looking back at her team mates. “Are you sure we should be here?” she squeaked.

A male turqoise knight in volcanic demo armor nodded his head. “It's fine, Nila.” he said, “We'll all protect you if you have any problems.”

“But it's so dark and it smells of death!” Nila, the amber knight, cried. Her hands gripped the iron gate to support herself as her legs turned into noodles. The gate gently rattled as her trembling body shook it.

A fiery claw shoved the amber knight aside as a female lavender knight in a volcanic salamander suit stood in front of the three. She heaved a sudaruska above her head, placing the free hand on her hip. “I don't see why we had to drag dead weight along.” she said unenthusiastically, “Honestly, if she wants to help the cause, she should just smack chroma and wolver Pups around all day.”

“Sera, do you honestly ever have anything constructive to say.” a male brown knight in deadshot armor sighed.

“Yeah, yeah, Rahul...” Sera rolled her eyes, “But just because Nila is our guild leader's little sis doesn't mean we should be stuck babysitting.” She pointed her blade at the amber knight who was sitting on the ground sniffling. “And just what do you think you're doing, Veryl?” she asked, resting her weapon the ground.

Veryl, the turquoise knight, had kneeled down to console the distraught Nila. “She is just nervous Sera, there is no need to give her a hard time. She just needs some practice. In fact, I recall a knight who wasn't very enthusiastic about her first journey in her either.” he said, looking at the lavender knight.

Sera was insulted by the comment, almost reeling back from the words. “Tch, at least I didn't whine about it.” she mumbled under her breath. She glared at Veryl, tapping her foot, “My point rests though, she's gunna be dead weight. She'll want her hand held every room.”

While Sera and Veryl argued, Rahul was looking at the bridge. He looked to the left, then to the right, he would stand up on his tip-toes, and crouch down to the ground. “Guys... I think Lord Vanaduke has done some remodeling.” he said.

The two knights stopped butting heads, walking over the deadshot knight and taking a look for themselves. There was a maze of stone barricades zigzagging across the bridge, spiked wheel launchers lined the sides of the bridge.

Sera laughed at the sight and then pretended to yawn. “So, Lord Vanadork finally decided to try and give us a challenge?” she said, raising the heavy sword above her head, “I welcome any attempts he makes to reinforce his kingdom, I refuse to let a villain like him think he runs the planet.” Sera swung the sudaruska with such force that it began to break the rusty gate.

“Wait, we might want to head back up and give a field report.” Veryl said.

Sera shook her head, “No way, nuh-uh, we stop whatever he's planning right here, right now.” She continued slamming the weapon against the gate until it finally gave way. “I'll go on ahead and shut down the launchers, you guys just sit and look pretty.” she said, running off down the bridge.

“No, Sera!” Veryl shouted. He got up to try and stop the brash knight, but a wall of dark flames erupted from the floor. Veryl stumbled back, gazing at the shadow flames dancing from the floor.

“What in Cradle's name did Vanaduke do to this place!” Rahul gasped.

“We need to get Sera back here.” Veryl said, “Before she hurts herself. Nila will you be okay waiting here by the entrance?”

Nila stood up, drying the tears from her eyes. “I think so.” she nodded.

“Okay, we'll be right back.” Veryl said.

As the shadow flames vanished, the two knights quickly made their way onto the bridge. Just as they had begun to run through the maze of traps, the flames erupted again, causing a dark curtain to hide their progress from Nila.

Nila held a hand to her chest as she took deep breaths, she could feel her heart pounding. Between the fear from this sinister kingdom and worry for her guild mates, her body was in overdrive. Nila looked down to the lost soul which was still warning no one in particular to turn back. She looked over to the charred ruins of some wooden columns, orbs of light floated around the ruins mourning the destruction. Nila had had enough of the restless dead's torment and tried looking down at the floor for comfort, she twiddled her hands as she tried to think happy thoughts. “Ooh, I hope they aren't much longer.” she whimpered.

The flames flickered and vanished for a brief moment, revealing Veryl and Rahul carrying an incapacitated Sera. The waiting had felt like hours, despite minutes only passing. They lowered the lavender knight to a safe spot on the ground.

Sera had a strange purple design floating above her head. It was almost like a spell tag, but without the paper charm – it was merely an eerie purple outline with an eye in the center. Sera groaned as she tossed and turned on the floor. “It's... so... dark... and... c-c-cold!” she cried, “A-all... alone... the darkness... s-surrounds me!”

“Sera, it's okay, we're here now!” Rahul said, touching her arm.

“A-all... alone....” was Sera's only response, “It... c-consumes!”

Nila pulled a remedy capsule out of a satchel on her hip. She kneeled before the knight, placing the capsule in her hands. “Sera, what happened!” she exclaimed. Nila forced Sera's hand to tightly grasp the remedy capsule, breaking it and releasing a blue mist.

The capsule seemed to have no effect as the strange design above Sera's face continued to glow.

“They cloud... my vision...” Sera whimpered. She tossed and turned, shouting in pain and repeating strange gibberish.

“I'll see if I can contact someone to help us.” Veryl said, “We need to get Sera medical aid quickly!” Veryl reached for a small badge pinned on his armor, pressing a small button on the back side.

Chapter 4: Fear

Sorry about the lack of update last week, I was at a relatives so I was busy, but here is the next chapter.

====================================================

Chapter 4: Fear

If there was a place that was packed with more people than the Haven Bazaar, it was the Arcade. knights of every rank wandered around the various areas of the Arcade – the elevators, mineral depot, coliseum lift, and Clockwork regulation facility were bustling with knights.

To the far right, near the mineral depot, was a group of at least twenty or so knights. This platform was normally empty, but today it was populated by what seemed to be new recruits, although a few seasoned veterans were standing in the crowd as well. They were watching a maroon gremlin in a typical brown gremlin jacket, with the exception of his gremlin logos being crossed out with a grey x. He had on the black pants and shoes as well, along with red goggles.

The gremlin had a small crystal in his hands, along with a computer beside him. “The minerals can be stored for later use at the mineral depot here in the Arcade. Simply type in the option at the elevator lift, then input your unique code as given by your superiors, place the required energy to power the lift and it will store the gathered mineral you found at that depth. This is useful because you can only carry so many minerals at a time.” He pointed at the mineral and to the computer, typing on it as he spoke to the knights.

A cyan knight in cobalt armor had walked up to the backside of the platform, making him barely visible due to the slope between levels of the Arcade. “Ironclaw Firotechnician Crash.” he said, looking up at the gremlin.

The gremlin peered down at the knight, a bit surprised. “One moment.” Crash said to the crowd as he crouched down closer to the cyan knight. “What do you want?” he questioned.

“You know how to run the elevators and how the Clockworks work, right?” the cyan knight asked.

“Just because I specialize as a Firotechnician, doesn't mean I don't know how to do anything else.” Crash said with a growl.

The cyan knight nodded, trying not be bothered by the gremlin's temper. “Right, well, Lieutenant Feron would like your presence immediately. There seems to be a problem.” he said, “Please meet him at the Arcade control panel as soon as possible.” The knight saluted the gremlin.

“I'll be over when I can.” Crash grumbled. He simply stared, blinking at the knight until he finally stopped saluting and walked off. Crash stood back up and turned to the group of knights. “I will be cutting the lesson short today, but we will pick up where we left off.” he said to the knights, “Remember, same time same place.”

A round of thank yous and salutes came from the knights before they ran off to do other things.

Crash sighed as he spoke softly to himself, “I don't understand these people's customs.” He then walked over to the middle platform where Feron was normally stationed.

Feron was talking with Kozma and Brinks, while a few knights were darting back and forth behind him on the computers. He looked over and waved to Crash. “Ah, Ironclaw Firotechnician Crash, I'm glad you came over in a timely manner.” Feron said.

“Must you always call me by my full title? Just Crash is fine.” Crash said.

“My apologies.” Feron said, “I've also brought Field Scout Kozma and Weaponsmith Brinks here to discuss an important matter, you remember them, correct?”

Kozma held out her hand, “Good day, Crash.”

Crash looked down to the girl's hand before he looked back at Feron. “Look, we can sit down and have tea and get reacquainted later. Can we get to this important matter at hand?” he said impatiently, “What is wrong that you need my help?”

Kozma withdrew her hand, looking to Brinks for an answer, but he wasn't sure what to say.

“Er, right, well... There have been some strange anomalies in the Clockworks lately. For example, some areas seem to be going under drastic changes, some areas have disappeared from our radar and some--”

“Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary. The Clockworks always cycle and change you know.” Crash said in a cocky tone, crossing his arms, “I don't see what would be out of the ordinary about that.”

“Please let me finish.” Feron said, “If you'll take a look at the computer here, we have the Royal Jelly Palace on radar.” He led the gremlin to the computer.

Crash walked over to the screen and stared. “This reading shows a completely different signature than what is normal in there. Is that... a freezing signature?” he asked.

Feron nodded, “Quite so.”

“Well, there's not much I can really say with regards to the Jelly Empire. We gremlins never had that many ties to them -- although they have delicious currency. I can't say why it's suddenly so cold there.”

“Well, how about this then?” Feron asked. He stepped in front of the gremlin as he typed something into the computer, opening up another map. “As you can see, within this tier three map, the lowest depths seem to be having interference and are giving off strange signatures.”

Crash rubbed his chin as he looked at the map. “This is very strange, and this is a currently accessible stratum?” he questioned.

Feron nodded.

Kozma stepped forward, clearing her voice. “If it is any help Crash, we have reports from our recon knights and normal teams who have been there, as well as reports from those who have encountered foes such as the Snarbolax, Royal Jelly, Lord Vanaduke, and the Roarmulus Twins.” she said. Kozma looked to Brinks who had a clipboard. She took the clipboard and began to read from it.

“Knights have reported that various parts of the Clockworks seem to be much more difficult despite their ranking. Some areas have supposedly been giving off feelings of dread, loneliness, impending doom... Knights mention strange dark matter and particles and the feeling that they are not alone, as if this matter is sentient or alive. Reports from areas such as the Wildwood report more than one Snarbolax and that he has gone rabid, the Jelly Empire is now frozen over, and that Vanaduke is using new darker magics. There have been no casualties, but there are numerous injuries. Some of the injured have been inflicted with terrible curses of some kind, which have not been curable thus far. There are also quite a few knights missing.”

The gremlin stared at Kozma, turning pale.

“Do you know what could be wrong?” Kozma asked.

Crash gulped, “I-I...”

“If you have any ideas, we would love to know how to fix this problem.” Feron said.

Crash looked at the computer again, watching as one of the depths on the screen began to glow a strange color, meanwhile another one seemed to be fading off the radar. “I...” he tried to speak. Crash took a deep breath as he glared. He looked at the three with a serious look. “If you value your lives, you will close off access to anywhere that is doing this!” he exclaimed, pointing to the computer.

The three knights looked at each other with a confused look.

“While we're glad you apparently know something, could you please explain what is wrong?” Feron requested.

“Yeah.” Kozma said, “What could be that bad that it warrants shutting down part of the Clockworks?”

Crash shook his head, “Just do it! It's a dangerous malfunction!”

“Er.. well... alright, but can it be fixed?” Kozma asked.

“I... I don't know...” Crash said, “I...” He looked away, avoiding their stares. “I should go!” Crash said, turning.

“No, wait!” Kozma pleaded.

Crash quickly turned back to the three, sloppily saluting the knights. “I have to go... it's important.” he mumbled. He quickly walked off into the mass of knights in the arcade.

“Well, sir, what should we do?” Kozma asked, looking up at Feron.

“Let's try to contact Lieutenant Vaelyn and her crew stationed outside of The Core ASAP, perhaps they will know something and possibly have some words to say. I also want Intel Agent Kora on the line, let's see if we have any more current data regarding these anomalies. If all else fails, we'll begin to close these parts of the Clockworks down.” Feron said.

Hello everyone, I would like

Hello everyone, I would like to take this time while I have a chance to say I'm extremely sorry for no updates.

I have been unable to view the forums for months. I believe I mentioned this in my first post but I was having this strange issue where, upon clicking to go to the forums, I was greeted by the forum down for maintenance message. The thing is, it doesn't go away -- and nothing seems to fix it. I had thought this was over with, but this issue came back with a vengeance when August rolled around. The issue wouldn't even fix itself when trying to view the forums at my relatives.

Now hopefully, this won't happen again and I can start posting chapters again. I'm very sorry everyone who has been reading this!
