Not Magic (Hahn's lessons thread)

Alright Knights, I'm going to explain the various workings of your wargear, Cradle, and its inhabitants that Spiral HQ has discovered. Since there's a lot of information to go over, I'll let you choose what you want explained first.
So like a question answeringー
Yes, you present something to me that you don't think makes sense, and I'll explain it.
What about magー
There's no such thing as magic.
Can you tell me about the history ofー
I am a Biotech with side training in Geology and Electronics. I am not a historian, nor a mythologist.
EDIT: You can view a prototype of the Isoran Information Intranet, it contains a surmountable chunk of the things that I've written in this thread. Apologies for the missing information, it's a work in progress and it's taking quite some time to write. I plan on making it look a bit more snazzier than just black text on a white background, and I hope to do some art for the various topics too.

The speed penalty from the Plate Mail comes from how it's constructed. Plate Mail is designed with the primary interest of keeping the Knight protected from knocks, and in the case of Ironmight Plate Mail, shunting off piercing attacks. This means that gaps in the armor have to be thoroughly covered to ensure maximum protection. This extensive covering can be somewhat restrictive, not to mention uncomfortable, on Knights who are used to fluid movement of other armors such as the light Wolver Coat. In later versions of the armor, starting at Boosted Plate Mail, additional power systems are added to the armor. These manipulate the armor's plating directly before impacts to minimize damage and especially concussive effects. This doesn't make the armor any lighter, however.
Ancient Plate Mail is constructed very similarly, except the stonelike substance retrieved from the Firestorm Citadel's ruins replaces the standard Adamantium plating. It's considerably heavier and is quite rigid, unlike Adamantium which has a very small amount of elasticity, but it is also far more sturdy.
Note that when you are carrying objects, especially of awkward weights or shapes, you dequip your weapon and place your shield on your back. This allows you to manage your balance far better and move at full speed.

Why do we move slower when charging a weapon? In special cases such as vortex bombs, why must we move slower than, say, a mist bomb?
Also, why does my Acheron feel so much more powerful? It's been like this for a little over a month now. And don't you start jabbering about some magical dev in the sky.

A knight moves slower while charging bombs due to a power transfer from the knight's armor to the bomb. This isn't enough power to solely cause the blast, but it assists in recharging the bomb's expended energy alongside the standard solarthermo method. (Absorbing light and heat from particles near the bomb's surface)
The Vortex series of bombs are quite essentially artefacts from many eras ago. No-one even knows if Isorans invented the bomb, let alone understand how they work.
The Acheron's blade is made partially from tempered Dark Matter. Dark Matter interacts with other Dark Matter via a force of attraction called "Weak Nuclear Force". In a nutshell, there's a large number of surrounding factors can effect the state of Dark Matter. It's a little too complex to explain thoroughly. Dark Matter weapons have been known for their occasional unreliability, but the chaotic state of the matter is what can make them so deadly.

How does my sprite's gremlin high perk work? I don't get how my weapons can be modified so that they hit gremlins harder yet nothing else.

The Spiral Knight's Power Armor Skeleton is the basis of all armor that the Knights wear, it often just has its protection altered, cover appearance modified, and extra functionalities added to cover different situations. The armor has two modes of function: Freelance and Auto. Freelance is a setting in which the armor's internal motors mirrors the occupant's muscles, moving with them and essentially boosting the user's strength and speed. Auto is a user-engaged setting that consists of a large list of pre-programmed motions which move the armor regardless of the occupant's movement. Utilizing Auto allows the user to perfectly execute movements at a constant rate. However, without intense training, occupants of the armor can take a severe thrashing from the armor's strict motions.
Auto has another setting, Adaptive Auto, or AA. It's a dangerous setting which, instead of using the occupant's pre-programmed actions, uses the Power Armor's AI to generate new actions on the fly. This can allow the user to perform faster combos or to hit enemies with far greater precision and impact, but at a higher risk of self-injury due to the suit's erratic movement. Thus, to use a specific weapon in this mode, the Knight must obtain a Utility Violation Lisence, or UVL, for the weapon. Many knights are still sceptical about the usage of Adaptive Auto, not only for its ability to take complete control away from the occupant, but also for the injury it can cause.
Recently though, with the recovery of the Battle Sprites, the combined AI of the Sprite and the knight's Power Armor is powerful enough to calculate occupant strain before each action.

How are knights capable of keeping a liquid suspended in mid-air in a relatively smooth orb-like state? Or, say, the embers at the Owlite Keep?

Hexzy can write an expository essay on the ventures into Cradle.
Here's one : How does curse works? Why does it hurt only when you use an item or attack? Why doesn't curse affect all items/weapons (usually just up to 3 items or 2 weapons)?

As covered in the Bomb Internal Basics I linked above, Bombs can have their blasts skewed to deal greater damage to priority targets. Blasts can be skewed by lowering or increasing the energy threshold on select polarized pores on the Bomb's Shell.
This can be achieved by modifying the electronic signature during generation using a Battle Sprite's AI or Creaturebane-Class armor AI, or after the signature is recieved by the bomb using the Bomb's Scanner.
Once again, Knights that modify their Bomb's Scanner are required to obtain a Utility Violation Licence to show they are not using a weapon as it was originally designed.

There's an extremely old method called Acoustic levitation. It's been around for quite a few millennia. Surprised you haven't heard of it.

The lab computer seems to be missing information on this particular phenomenon.
It may be a sentient, immaterial entity. It shares characteristics with both Undead and Devilites but appears to be a superior lifeform that latches onto its victims. Due to the lack of creatures that utilize it, it may be quite some time before we gather any information on what it truly is.

How do I shot sword?
How does eat food? We may never know.
Next.

How are we able to carry the load of our weaponry (which i presume is very heavy (say suda and ancheint set)) but not able to jump.

Knight's power armor does support the ability to jump. The dash is an example of the powerful leg motors used. Of course, rapid repeated use of such a function can cause a lot of stress on the legs so in order to prevent user injury, this function is limited.
Since the clockworks needs to be able to provide transport to many different species, especially ones unable to clamber over difficult terrain like Scuttlebots and Jelly Cubes, much of the active clockworks can be accessed without needing to jump.

Mostly obvious question: http://media.spiralknights.com/wiki-images/9/92/Bestplanever.jpg
Also, why do kleptolisks steal?

Isorans reproduce sexually.
Spiral Knights are genetically modified Isorans, and cannot reproduce under normal circumstances: the process by which a Spiral Knight is created causes infertility.

A Shield is a device which generates a force field with varying strength that protects you, and ONLY you from enemy attacks.
Now you might be asking: "Why does the generated force field only protect you?" Well, my answer is: The force field is ×¥÷£×₩,
so it can only protect you.
P.S: If you cannot read a certain word, that means you are not intelligent enough to understand it.

just tryin' to get you to smile, buddy.
at least theres no little squires worrying about if daddy's coming home or not.

Spiral Knights are not genetically modified Isorans, they are actually semi-robotic beings created by the Isorans to be "perfect", while also losing their mouths in the process. How they are still able to speak is beyond my understanding.

Kleptolisks steal because they eat vials and capsules, unlike most other beasts.
How they drop those vials and capsules on death rather intact is a question for a smarter mind to answer.
P.S: "Why does every single creature on this planet not require food" is actually a better question than this...

Do Owlites have the ability to fart? And is this why the Kats killed them? They were crazy stanking up the place with their nasty booty?

Shields contain a generator which creates an omnidirectional forcefield capable of withstanding quite a large amount of damage. Taking too much damage causes a shield to drop, and it requires a short period of time in order to reboot. Fairly standard forcefield science.
Different shields work in different ways, however. The Plate Shields operate by a very simplistic "more power = more defense" method. This allows them to sustain quite a bit of damage from most sources. The Omega Shell is a later refinement of this system, but it is by no means superior.
Piercing Shields use a string-field generator. This doesn't generate a single surface, but rather a large series of strings that squiggle rapidly across the designated "surface" of the forcefield. This system is excellent for interrupting physical projectiles, especially rapidly moving ones or projectiles designed to penetrate solid matter.
Elemental Shields are charged with an alternating current. This can dissipate the majority of focused energy before it can connect with the forcefield.
Shadow Shields operation, once again, is based off the barely understood Dark Matter. As regular matter's contact with Dark Matter can cause considerable inexplicable decay, the best defence against it is Dark Matter itself, or in the case of the forcefield, Dark Energy.
Creatures of the Chroma family seem to be able to digest just about anything. Although Chroma's life cycle hasn't been directly observed, it's presumed that Kleptolisks' are the Chroma's teen stage. Once they ingest a chemical, their body has the incredible characteristic of being able to replicate it. Deadly chemicals that are replicated are then used as a bio-weapon against predators or prey.

Spiral Knights have mouths, along with scalp hair. If you would like to know more, I created a wiki page on Knight biology for your convenience.

We have not yet recovered enough data on Owlites in order to make an educated guess on their biology.
The conflict between Owlites and Kats most likely arose from technological envy, but once again, not enough information to make a solid deduction.
Next.

My theory is that the Owlites and the Kats are natural enemies due to the fact that their behaviors are the exact opposite of each other (somewhat). Recent data from the Kats reveal that they had tribes and used weapons made of bones and wood, reminiscent of barbarians, and at that time likely had little intelligence. On the other hand, the Owlites have libraries filled with books of knowledge which even we do not fully understand, thus showing that they were very intelligent, and looking at how quickly they were driven to extinction, suggests that they had little, if no means of offensive capabilities, and relied on their knowledge to defend themselves from enemies. And no, I do not plan on writing something as long as this ever again, unless absolutely necessary.

Do not accuse me of sprouting random theories. Please. Not like you would, but still.

If Kats used weapons, was this when they WERENT dead? I think Kats looked like Feline Humaniods or something but were killed by Owlities but were later resurrected by the Book.

Hex! You absolutely did not sprout any truth and evidence on how magic is not supposed to exist! Please answer: Where does Curse come from? Why does Nick say how the Owlite Academy trained magicks? Why did the Owlite shield description say about magic? The Gray Feathery set thing say about magic? What in the world is Shadow Magic? Surely there is some "science" in Apocrean tentacles and a huge laser beam!
@Canine- Yes, cat humanoids with tails. Maybbeeee? Ask Hex about Kats. *tries to control hormones*

@Canine-Vladmir, @Platinum-Dragon
That's not a question, that's speculation.

Answer all my questions, scientist-that-is-actually-better-than-Zeddy.

how does a brandish charge work? no, the 5* ones, with the explosions and directional knockback.

They weren't driven to extinction, Vlad, the majority of Kats died, but some survived and evolved (devolved? I dunno) to the Kats we know today. since they lose their arms in that process, they don't use weapons anymore. And yes, they might have looked like feline humanoids. We haven't found fossils of ancient Kats, nor do we think their fossils exist. And the book got destroyed after when Margrel opened the Book. Why did I say that, simple. The book would've been found otherwise. (Really bad explanation of the Book there:P)
To Annilaton:
1) Curse came from the Devilites. When they created the Gran Faust, the Curse status was created with it. Yes, they created the Gran Faust.
2) Nick is actually the creator of Cradle and all it's inhabitants. (Epic plot twist!)
3) We know magic once existed, but the secrets of magic were most likely lost with the Owlites. Maybe if we deciphered the books we would know more about magic.
4) Shadow magic is a subcategory of magic. We do not know more than that.
5) The apocreans are mysterious beings. More research into them would be required to uncover their secrets.
There, done.
EDIT: Added more stuff to read.

my question is What does the Kat say?

about being killed by owlites and later using the books that no one wants them to have so they dont resurrect the rest of em and go kill Cradle and all. You know? simple stuff

Platinum-Dragon is coming in with the scoops and hijacking. Hex do somethin D:

The brandish creates the explosion by using the force of the horizontal slash on the charge attack, combined with the energy stored within the weapon itself to create "explosions". Also explains the different explosions created with each brandish line.

Kats say "mew". They always did, and they likely always will.

How the explosions are always in a straight line is because of the direction of the air that is generated with said horizontal slash always going in the same direction, thus influencing the explosions to go in that very direction.

I'm actually new on the forums, and yet I can compete against a long-time forumer on Spiral Science.

I could go by the cheap explanation that Candlestick Keep could have possibly jumped across dimensions just like devilites have, however, saying that could bring up an infinite amount of possibilities. Essentially, until we know more about the Owlites and the Candlestick Keeps, we cannot know for sure what this "magic" is or even if it isn't anything that cannot be explained by current-day science.
I'm being picky here, but the Owlite shields mention nothing of magic, and although the Grey Feather line uses many synonyms and related words, it does not mention the word "magic" except for in the Two Star armor's name.
Kat biology can also be explained using post #28. Spookats are Kat's incorporeal form, there is no way to know what they looked like prior-Kataclysm, save for some wild guesses based off their hood replicas.
What's this "Shadow Magic" you're going on about?
Like devilites, Apocreans can dimension jump. They are superior though in the fact that they don't need a material gate to do so, likely because they are entirely incorporeal as Spookats are.

Where do the sprites in Firestorm Citadel come from, and how do they create water out of nowhere.

Scirio, who are you talking to? I am not a Biotech, I am simply someone with knowledge.

Wot? You think the forums revolve around you?
Nah bro.
I asked Hexzy.
Tip: read the original post.

The Brandish upgrades are astounding pieces of handiwork. By identifying a series of air molecules and then bombarding them from two directions with electromagnetic radiation, the intersecting wavelengths cause energy levels to spike in the selected molecules causing them to tear apart and release energy. This is very effective with gases or even liquids with low reactivity, but can be very dangerous near flammable or radioactive gases and liquids, and is completely useless in a vacuum. As a powerful but risky sword, due to the Brandish modification's tendency to ignite nearby materials, it quickly earned the name "Fireburst".
As the Fireburst is an electronically powered weapon, it did not need to be refuelled like other fire-based weapons of its time such as the Hot Edge.
The early models of the Fireburst simply caused these explosions haphazardly. Although it was crude and effective, self injury was often caused by target remains being flung back at the user. This led to the addition of a powerful electrohydrodynamic device to the blade in order to control the blast's direction using the Biefeld–Brown effect. The dangerously high voltage used for this device doubled nicely as a weapon, and coined the term "Voltedge".
As a testament to the name, a Fireburst was modified by boosting the power of the EHD device, at the cost of the power for the initial electromagnetic bombardment. This meant that arcs of dangerous amounts of electricity could be released at the moment of explosion, allowing the electricity jump around the low-pressure environment of the blast, frying anyone or anything unfortunate to be in its path. This design, although no safer than the last, quickly fell into common use.

Creatures of the swarm do not inflict the Curse status, so how did you manage to tie the Curse status with the Swarm? Please do explain, I am utterly confused.
Okay, how come when a knight is wearing a full ancient plate mail set can have a MSD of med, but when I am running around with a solid stone statue holding above my head, my movement speed is unchanged. how come?
