Fangs are getting sharper, slimes are getting spikier

We've made a few changes here at Spiral HQ that will help further distinguish monster families from each other.
As you may know, the beast and slime families are supposed to primarily deal piercing damage in Tier 2 and 3. Currently they do not, but with the next update they will.
- Wolvers will be dealing split damage with their bites.
- Chromalisks will be dealing split damage with their piercing whirly tongues.
- Jelly cubes, oilers, etc. have evolved in a similar fashion to their lichen brethren and have grown spikes from their squishy bodies. http://ow.ly/i/cD7x
- Jelly cubes now have a mid-range spike attack starting in Tier 2.
Also, while not the beast family, devilites will be doing split shadow and normal damage as fiends are supposed to specialize in shadow damage.
Get those jelly and skelly armors ready folks, you'll need them!
Nick you rock. I love your(and co) game so much. This will only add again more to that awesome experience *wink's slyly
Nice! Thanks for addressing the lack of Piercing damage! Now Piercing armor can actually be useful!
Sweet. Now can we have piercing/shadow defense in some new demo suits :D

Hah, now I don't feel like a sucker for working on my Valkyrie line of equipment..
Awesome~
Now my Skolver set + Barbarous Thorn Shield will be more useful. Normal/Piercing Defense + Damage Maximum......
*Looks at Jelly Cube* Come at me bro.

Be careful what you wish for, I've been checking out the T3 jelly cubes and they're pretty nasty in groups!
"Get those jelly and skelly armors ready, folks"
My body is ready. Been ready for a while.
"Be careful what you wish for, I've been checking out the T3 jelly cubes and they're pretty nasty in groups!"
Like my old man once taught me... "Never underestimate the power of stupid cubes in large groups."
I can't help thinking the design decision went something like this...
"Had a bit of a brain wave. There I was, smashing some jellycubes together, and I thought, 'yes, it's deadly. But what's missing? What's missing?' And I thought lots of sharp bits welded onto the flat bits."
Maybe they'll shoot fire or something just before they crush us.
Finally a reason to actually use my Azure Guardian gear.
But I had just got my ancient set!
Well done though, this balance was much needed.

Love to see jellies get a bit harder, and like that my shield's piercing def will be relevant!

Thanks, nick! Now the coolest-looking armor types will actually be useful as well. :)

Hopefully the update comes in time for this plan: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/10565
Looking forward to the next T3 Jelly Farm, for sure :D

wait so all jellies have a mid range attack 0.o
will the mini one have the range attack? - that may cause me certain death...it shall be epic.
also i'd like to see how this will turn out bomber wise...(majority of mob types have range atts now)...will jellies still get destroyed by everything? mwahaha can't wait for it anyway.

Be careful what you wish for, I've been checking out the T3 jelly cubes and they're pretty nasty in groups!
Perfect!
This, in conjunction to Project uJelly...
I like it.

Forgot to mention that chromalisks will be doing split damage as well now that they have piercing, whirly tongues.
The Jelly King fight is going to be pretty ugly after this update.
Not really looking forward to -that-, but I am pleased to hear that wolvers are going to deal their proper damage.
'course now I'm going to need to make some gear changes!
I don't like jellies having spikes; their simplicity was what made them perfect..

Agreed. Artisitically, I don't care for the spikey jellies.

Oilers were dangerous enough without spikes and I'm going to miss the cute jiggly pink cubes in Tiers 2 and 3, but otherwise I think these are good changes.

> I don't care for the spikey jellies.
But they care for you. They care for you a great deal.

so when is this patch suppose to kick in it would be nice to have a time since i dont know if u have time to have a final JK run before the patch

Wouldn't it be great if they released it when the new jelly king gate opened up? I haven't looked myself but a previous post made it seem that the JK gate would be out of commission for a day or two.
I can see it now-
The Royal Jelly has returned from a short respite! It looks like both the Royal Jelly and its minions have come back stronger than ever!

Ah, I just caught the little tidbit about Devilites dealing shadow damage.
Thank goodness. My seraphic suit was starting to feel antique XD
[edit] derp, didn't realize i was also the last post[/edit]

A big event is underway and is in need of many participants.
Simply read, supply, or ignore. http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/10565

Since oilers are getting spikey and thus more difficult, it would be awesome if there were a way to put them out after they catch fire. Logically, ice would be a good way to do that. The iceburst brandish, cryotech alchemers, and freezing vaporizers should extinguish flaming oilers when the oilers become frozen. That makes logical sense and may keep the difficulty of oilers within reason now that they can shoot us from across an arena.

This will help freshen up the Jelly Palace a little, give a much needed buff to Slimes and Beasts, and make the Snarby shield more useful. :D
Jelly King with spikes anyone? :P
EDIT: "Since oilers are getting spikey and thus more difficult, it would be awesome if there were a way to put them out after they catch fire. Logically, ice would be a good way to do that."
Ice already does put them out. But you need to put them all out at once or else their friends will reignite them. Because of that, Shivermist is best for putting them out. :P

Eury>But they care for you. They care for you a great deal.
Ian, have you been giving our sweet Eurydice evil lessons again?

I think the changes to the Slime Family were necessary, not only because there was a lack of Piercing damage in the game, but because of Danger Rooms as well.
One of the possible Danger Rooms is getting a room full of Slime-type monsters, yet this room is ridiculously easy regardless of Tier because they remain relatively the same throughout the entire game (Until after this sweet update that is). I can literally finish a full Slime Danger Room in a minute or so, because they're slow, close-range, and not threatening whatsoever, again, regardless of Tier.
With this upcoming update it'll add more difficulty to fighting Slime-types, which is necessary since you need a difficulty difference between Tiers. So, good work guys, now work on Scuttlebots, they don't change whatsoever no matter the Tier. They're been one of the easiest monsters you can possibly run into.
Doesn't freeze already put out oilers? I use Shivermist to put out oilers in FSC.

Personally, I'd love to see the return of these things. I'd love to see something deal sleep..

> Ian, have you been giving our sweet Eurydice evil lessons again?
Hahaha, like I need lessons. ;)

I am dreadful afeared. D:
But at least it will encourage people to go for something other than the Owlite Shield series. And... oh hey, my Mighty Defender and Ash Tail set are actually pretty good for this. Maybe I'm not quite so afeared after all. :D

Freeze hasn't put out oilers the last 5 or 6 times I was in a Flamelash Arena: Slimey Showdown (right before the jelly palace). The little suckers kept burning and healing themselves while stuck in the ice of my shivermist. A haildriver also failed to extinguish them. I didn't have a glacius to try, but I assume it too would have failed.
Perhaps it's a bug (I did file a bug report when it happened the first time). If it's a bug, I'll assume a fix is in the works. If it's not a bug, please change oilers so that ice extinguishes them.
Things is, ice puts out oilers, but if they just charged at you they will ignite oil before getting frozen, and then reignite themselves in the fire, while still frozen, and heal.
So you have to freeze them while they can't catch fire again.
Maybe it's a bug? Easiest way to reproduce is just dropping a shivermist and have a fired oiler charge attack you a few times.
Also, could be more interesting if intead of having spikes, jellys attacked by "spiking" parts of themselves.
At first I was like "this makes sense" but looking at the images, it kinda looks silly. They should only grow spikes when attacking.
Also, does this mean that royal jelly will now actually have a pattern aside from "wobble around and hope I hit something"?
Freeze puts out oilers, but it doesn't extinguish the flames from oil slicks. If an oiler drops an oil slick into the freeze mist and then gets stuck right on top of it, it'll ignite the oil slick, then get frozen, then get re-ignited and heal from the oil slick, then get frozen, and so on. In order for freeze to be effective against oilers, it needs to also do something about the oil slicks.

My body is ready. Been ready for a while.
Born ready. Winning.

Spiky Jelly armor set, splitting off the base jelly set (probably at 5*?).
Make it happen.
I have to ask: Does the change of attack for Chromalisk apply to -all- of the Chromalisk ''species'', or just the regular Chromalisk?
I find that the ''elemental'' Chromalisks' ''elemental spit'' attacks are rather... pathetic. It's incredibly easy to dodge, and it would make more sense if they also had the tongue attack, so not only could they be able to ''lay traps'' on the ground with their spit, but they could also try to give you a tongue-lashing, literally.
I welcome the additional challenge and armor diversity, but the idea of t3 Quicksilvers with spikes does make me a little queasy (I'm derptastic around these guys)! I just hope for big enough rooms so I stand a chance at kiting them. :)

the need for skelly will soon come... i was really ticked at how few use them....

Oilers with spikes?? I hope you nerfed the tackle on them or we are ALL DEAD D:
None of this means anything as long as gun puppies are the only meaningful non-boss enemy in the game.

An people look at my Ironmight Plate Mail and think I'm silly. Come at me jelleh!

I knew they would do an epic change like this I cant wait to see what those cookie cutter players will start using luckily for me I have a very great arsenal of options =).
so we no longer have to weep when we get piercing UVs? sad that so many have gone for dirt cheap over the last 2 months :P
Thanks for implementing this change. Balancing gear popularity isn't over yet - but this certainly is a strong step in the right direction. Why not make royal jelly palace have a 50/50 chance of containing sloom while we're at it? Here's kirby collection for you to look at while you consider it.
