Rise of Knights - iOS and android
I'm really bummed that I didn't get a chance to play it. Was hoping to snag an iPad for Christmas or something since my current devices can't run anything this fancy...
Ah, well. It's probz for the best that their efforts aren't further divided.
Still rather disappointed with the shutdown, but I suppose it had to be done. I was actually looking to try it out.
Perhaps if they can get *cough*Sega*cough* to focus on increasing and diversifying various jobs and roles on the team, they'll be able to focus their extra output on mobile, because let's face it, the team is small- especially the coders. The focus needs to be put on their main game, and even that is kind of on a stalemate right now.
Sega's one chance to make one of their development studios stand out and they still treat it like ****~
Fall of Knights - coming September 30, 2015...
A shame to hear that they're shutting down despite the great amount of resources already put on it, but on the bright side maybe more resources will be spent on SK in the future? Or maybe we'll get another, more exciting project from OOO.
Sad to hear it's out of the scope now. Didn't have anything super unique to it gameplay-wise that I saw but that doesn't make it a bad game!
Hopefully we do get a new Spiral Knights spinoff game in the future, preferably more centered around combat. I'd love to a sort of RTS where we command a squad of knights as an intel reader sort of like Kora, however we can play as individual knights and swap between them at will.
On top of that you could gather intelligence depending on what loot your squad picked up, and play through minigames to research them.
I dunno, that'd be fun to me. Could integrate some things into the Spiral Knights game, such as a sort of guardian angel spectator mode where you command a squad rather than playing as a knight, call in reinforcements as needed (recons, airstrikes, etc), mark enemies to deal additional damage against them, etc. Would be fun!
Interesting, interesting indeed.
I do agree with what Krakob has said: It's quite a shame that so much effort and time has been put into Rise of Knights only for the game to be pulled when it didn't even get out of Beta. (The most recent version if I recall is v0.7.2)
This will probably explain everything going quiet after the initial response of "It is indeed happening, we will have more information later on."
Thankfully, we still have a month for those of us who own the game to dig through the game. From my understanding, there isn't anymore story elements aside from the opening.
I do wonder what this means for Spiral Knights though.
It'd be nice if the GMs or someone else from OOO could clarify if the game is canceled or what because right now it's kind of unclear and that sort of thing is rather important.
@Fangel
I instantly thought of Pikmin when you mentioned commanding a squad of Knights and more combat-based gameplay.
Hey, actually, I think it would fare nice for a mobile game, like click and drag.
Then you could press little buttons at the sides or corner to make them attack, or whatever else...
@Cross-Over
Would we get to hear the beautiful knight's voices again when we throw-er...send them at our opponents?
If anyone remembers the Gran Faust incident...
First, we hear of news about Rise of Knights in development after finding out about that, & then, we hear it's being cancelled. I don't understand it. Is Rise of Knights still in development or not? If anyone may answer, please do. I'm a bit confused about this.
Not that I'm a huge fan of the mobile games & the mobile gaming industry, because I am truly not, for obvious & financial reasons, that of which I won't explain here. Still, the only thing that matters to me about them is their very well being, that is to say, their current states.
So with all the time sunk into a game that will now not be released is there a chance that some of the models and ideas from it be incorporated into the current SK game?
The problem I have with the confirmation is in the wording here-
"We have made the decision to not move forward with global release."
Does this mean:
A.) The project is 100% scrapped?
or
B.) The project simply requires a good deal of work and we'll be seeing it again in a couple of years?
Because there is a huge difference between the two. Further, they didn't say anything about current Spiral Knights, or the state of the development team, or anything. It'd be quite nice to hear something along the lines of-
"We have made the decision to not move forward with global release for now."
or
"We have made the decision to discontinue development of rise of knights."
Along with something like-
"Those formally working on Rise of Knights have been rededicated to the PC variant of the title; Spiral Knights."
Thanks for this. It's very upsetting to see such a project like that get shutdown, even if it's years, months or weeks. Well, to some. I just don't ever play these kind of games to get even upset about that. I don't know what reason they have to do it, though.
To the others out there...
Eh. That's how it is with mobile games today. They don't last very long. The devs that make these kind of games only end up spending more time & money to try to repeatedly fix the same recurring problems to many mobile devices after launch, like slowdowns & crashes, E.G, over & over again, instead of advancing the game, in terms of content & storylines, & aren't the best ideal options to spend time playing them, let alone becoming one & making them in that kind of industry... & their in-game currency purchase options only gets people to spend a lot more money to do shortcuts instead of waiting for excessive hours, days & weeks to actually progress. Honestly, I don't think they're really exciting & not the best choice to spend money & time making these kind of games.
I just don't like these kind of games, because, to me, they're only a big waste of money & time... maybe even bigger. They'd be better off being indies that only do PC & maybe a specific game console or few, not mobile. That's from my perspective, anyway. Just don't take this the wrong way. I have my opinions.
No need to do an example of a mobile game here, because it's not necessary.
When I heard about the game, I was so hyped even though I didn't have a device to use. A bit later I found out I'd have to get a "mandatory Ipad" for work. I've never been a fan of Ipads, but then I discovered I could play the game through it. I used the trick where you switch your app store to Canada just to play it and it was the first thing I got... and it was an interesting experience.
First off I want to say I'm very glad I was able to play the game. It was really addicting for the first days. I took LOTS of screenshots, so for people interested I have some the stuff. Secondly, from my understanding RoK has absolutely nothing to do with the SK lore and is its own thing. The plot lines didn't match up, the weapons were redone, so many things were changed. You fought rabid Snarby BEFORE the Roarmalous Twins, so there's a general idea of where this is coming from. And while the swarm were present they didn't have the same purpose since RoK isn't about getting to the core and leaving Cradle.
I really wish I was able to find something to record the gameplay, but I couldn't find any free screen recorders. But once again, I took many screenshots and really hope it will be able to capture the idea.
The game had lots of potential in my eyes, but the same could be said for SK itself. While it seemed choppy and unfinished and the gunner class basically made half the others irrelevant(I only had one bomber and I didn't really need them) the idea of reviving fallen knights with names and backstories was a really cool idea to me. I saw some regular Spiral Knights players (Solotron, Makugan and many others)and had a good time with it. One again, I'm not exactly a fan of mobile but something makes me feel SK would fit on it in some way.
If you have any specific gameplay questions or anything, go ahead and ask.
Sorry for any typos.
It's October 1st and even though I got the shutdown notice like the rest of you guys, the game is still accessible to me. I'm not complaining, though; it's wonderful to have more time with it.
That said, it might not be around forever,so I've also been documenting the game as I've been going along, and I've got every boss, world, level, and sub-level unlocked and recorded! It's just a tedious process to get it all cropped and put together nicely. bleh. Is image dumping allowed?
Regardless, bit of trivia:
-Green Ward evolves into Swiftstrike Buckler
-Honor Guard is Ice-type while Honor Blade is Earth/Poison type
-Exalted Honor Guard's sash is silver instead of gold
-World 6 is named Starlight Cradle, and aesthetically combines the Apocrea and Swarm themes
-Neither Vanaduke nor the Royal Jelly appear in the entire game
-RoK's Cradle has (had) eleven seas, according to a unit's description (Forgot the name)
-The Merchant, Master Voldol, appears to be a Gremlin (this one may have been obvious though)
Could the wiki be adapted to include Rise of Knights on its own separate page?
I feel like RoK is pretty important for SK's(the game) history, so documentation would be good. Perhaps when they said they were removing the servers they were turning it into a completely offline game? I would actually like that more. From what I know, moderate image dumps are okay.
And since it was done before, here's my bit of trivia:
All shock based weapons(including the Spur line) had a yellow theme rather than the cyan one in SK.
Red Saber is 4*
Skelly Shields are shock(elemental) and Bristling Bucklers are curse(shadow).
Torto guns functions like melee weapons but have longer range.
And I think it's funny Vana never showed up despite being in the promo art on the load screen.
Which makes me think...who's the final boss then?
vvv Spoilers as to final boss vvv
...though it doesn't really matter too much anymore does it
The bosses go as follows:
Emerald Axis-Snarbolax
Sea Petal Pass-Rabid Snarbolax
Obscured Plateau-Roarmulus Twin
Jigsaw Valley-Red Roarmulus Twin
Jade Tangle-Ice Queen
Starlight Cradle-Battlepod
Yep, mighty #6 is a Battlepod. Granted, it's pretty powerful, as my team started dying from invisible bullets just by standing in front of it :P
Pretty sure it's a placeholder. After all, the boss stage is called Hallowed Citadel, so maybe Vanaduke was intended.
Well this is nice. I have two main questions-
1. How does the story relate to Spiral Knights, and where does it fit? In other words, what exactly transpires in the game world, so that we can try to fit the two games together.
2. The big payment question. How does it work? What do you get and how much does everything cost? Is it necessary to pay to get everything?
The storyline seems to be a spinoff rather than a sequel, is the thing; you've got Greywell, who I am convinced is an Owlite due to the shape of his "nose" (it really honestly looks like he's wearing a mask). Either that or he's a Knight, due to his luminous eyes. Rise of Knights' story comes in after its own Cradle was shattered in a Cataclysm because of a war between the Celestials (who I assume to be the Valkyries of whom many armors and accessories are modeled around) and the Void, which represents the Underworld and Swarm. Bit of Apocrea in that too, as we see in World 6, Starlight Cradle with the giant obelisk stuck through it.
Greywell wakes your character, a Commander, from some kind of stasis, and explains the Cataclysm as the game's Prologue.
(Certain NPC knights in the tutorials seem to have mouths where their noses usually are. It's really endearing.)
It's never necessary to pay for anything. Gems, the premium currency, can be obtained through levels and the Battle Arena (I got 750 for being in first place once :D) though you can buy them if you so desire. Crowns are called Coins in RoK, possibly so as to not confuse players who are new to SK/RoK entirely, and are amassed in tens of thousands far faster than you could ever hope to accomplish in the main game.
Though prices are also huge, so a single Radiant Heat Crystal costs over a million in the shop, and you generally need four to evolve a weapon. Dear vog.
Think that covers all the main points. I won't be image-dumping for some time due to technical issues and a slightly flammable laptop.
So this explains why we have been getting prize box updates for the past 12+ patches.
OOO was milking spiral knights so they could fund their new iOS project.
Hopefully it generates some revenue, so we can actually get some content over here.
EDIT: Lol it didn't even last.
I wish I knew wtf OOO was doing.
Well, if you and half the community are gonna keep being pessimistic about it there's no point in them saying anything, now is there?
@Umbra
Well, I can only still hope that Spiral Knights will still keep on going, after the shutdown of Rise of Knights. I feel a bit sorry that the spinoff had to be shuttered. Still, I have this to hang on to. The only concern I have for SK is the continuation of the adventures.
@Sono-Forum
To be precise, it's not just Sonic focused on mobile games, it's PC, too, after Sega's big restructuring that halted any plans to make new Sonic console games.
You know, after reading through Sega's big restructuring, as well as the cancellation of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode 3, which clearly makes the whole Sonic 4 episodic saga completely cancelled without a definitive set conclusion & making the whole prime Sonic continuity a big jumbled mess, Sonic doing PC & mobile games from that point on, & seeing that the Sonic Boom franchise effort is still going on... I just gave up hopes about Sonic & Sega trying to make the proper new Sonic sequel we've been asking & waiting for after the launch Sonic & Knuckles(A.K.A., it's true name, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Part Two). That goes to show us that the episodic game formula just doesn't work very well on platform games. Takes too long to wait. I knew it would fail, anyway.
I just can't face it anymore after all that Sega did just to keep making profits to stay alive. Sonic on consoles was the only reason we used to like Sonic, & that reason... is gone, now that we won't probably see any new Sonic game on consoles, not after the restructuring, anyway. Now, I just... don't care about Sonic anymore. I've already gave up on Sonic, now that Sega's only doing PC & mobile games, not consoles... not anymore. I'm done with Sonic after what's been done, & nothing's going to convince me to like Sonic ever again. Perhaps, it's time we should just... finally move on from Sonic. I'd be better off moving on & placing my dashed hopes behind me, instead of having to wait for another 20 years or so for Sega to make a proper Sonic sequel. And I can only hope they may have the sense to do the same & get this over with.
Deeply sorry if this part is unrelated to SK in any way, but when you read word that the long-awaited Sonic sequel that we didn't expect from the former company you used to love from the past & should be expecting from that company gets cancelled & the struggling franchise you used to love gets inflicted with a severe downfall that leaves their former fans severely disappointed & upset... it's time to finally call it quits.
In all realism, there's not much reason for them to shut the game down. Hell, Puzzle and Whirled are still going strong and from what I've heard, those two are smallish as well.
Though you're right; SEGA's fallen on hard times as of late, and that might have affected Three Rings a bit, since the devs and Game Masters don't really talk much. I get the feeling it has something to do with an overly-strict privacy policy.
I'm gonna stay hopeful that the game will be restored to what it was, and that the developers are doing their best to care for it.
On the topic of Rise of Knights, three things of varying importance:
1) I can still access the game. I assumed it would just be unplayable after september 30th, but October's here and it's still up. Not sure about the technicalities.
2) Alchemers fire three shots while normal blasters fire two. Thought that was interesting.
3) b l u e t o r t o d r o n e s h i e l d
@Umbra:
Um, no. OOO shut down Whirled along with a few other games of their's they "discontinued."
Omg that blue tortodrone shield is sweet and I would totally craft it in normal SK. You mentioned a possible owlite character? Can you get pics of him? Really pics of the game in general would be epic.

@Hmmlol
Well, while I'm not surprised they shuttered Whirled, & other games, Three Rings does have a small number of developers. You'd think they'd tackle so many ongoing projects at once for only a small amount of people? Can you imagine the exhaustion they would have to take? I'd thought so. They'd be wiped out. Someone's got to make some tough, yet necessary, sacrifices to have them shift some focus to the project many players know & love... or, at least, hire more people so Three Rings would struggle less with managing so many projects at once.
@Umbra
That's how it is with many long-standing old game companies today, even SEGA... hard times of financial struggling, regrettable business decisions, strict & rigid policies towards their employees, & discarding continuing development towards long-standing franchises former fans used to love just to keep going(examples of said franchises that I will not provide, 'cause it's not necessary here). I've read some news stories about Sega's financial struggling a while ago, & I have to say, their decisions, especially the one to discontinue console game development, have severely upset us the most... OK, beyond all that. It didn't take me that long enough just to realize the sad truth about that, & it is the sad truth, indeed.
Sonic Runners, that endless runner mobile game, it's nothing more than just a mish-mash of reused past content & elements from Sonic Lost World, old boring throwbacks, & it's stories in the game's so-called "episodes" are nothing more than reusing the same, pointless plot over & over again. Honestly, that game is very, VERY boring. I honestly don't think they may even make new "episodes" at all. It'll just be nothing more than boring players to replay the runs over & over again. I don't think any of you should try & buy that game. Big waste of money from start to finish, especially to continue it.
Honestly, I think they may not last much longer with the way they're doing with their business decisions. Plus, doing mobile game development is WAY more expensive than having and trying to maintain a mobile device, let alone to maintain bill payments towards mobile devices, even one. They're all just HUGE wastes of money & time. That's the truth. I wouldn't highly recommend doing it, nor working for Sega, if many have interest. Best to be better off being indie devs. WAY less struggling & better to actually make & finish real games without having to worry about all kinds of strict policies these kind of old gaming companies have.
Let's just face the facts, people, with all the countless years we've spent waiting all this time for nothing... SEGA's never, ever going to deliver the promises we've been tirelessly asking them over & over again for over 20 years straight, & even try to redeem themselves for all their regrettable choices they've done, because they'll always end up doing just the same, & they will still never listen to us, no matter what, & they'll only worsen their ongoing struggling they're in now. And now, thanks to their decisions, including the cancellation of Sonic 4, Episode 3, the formerly last episode to Sonic 4 itself... it's finally time we just give up, you know, cast all of our dashed, broken hopes, dreams, & ambitions towards SEGA & Sonic away &... move on with our lives. Don't bother continuing their support again, it's all going to end up just the same, & it will only get worse. I know it. It's the only truth, straight from the heart.
To the matter of you about Rise of Knights, it's unusual to play that game after it got discontinued & unplayable. You would be locked out & be unable to play it by now. Odd.
You know, when I made that earlier comment about Sonic, I didn't do it for discussing the Blue Blur's future, I did it to make a point about jumping to conclusions.
/sarcasm Thanks for the long-winded rants on the guys over at SEGA, though. Definitely needed that.
Truly sorry, but I had to get out my saddened thoughts about SEGA's current state, after reading what they did months ago. Can't keep them in for long, anyway.
I've got a lot of stuff to dump. Uploading takes a bit of time because of an awful browser though, so I'll do my best to get em all in a decent bunch, in a timely manner.
Is the cropped or uncropped version of images favorable? Cropping and stitching might take quite a bit of time.
If Whirled is shut down, like Hmmlol said, then... how many games does Three Rings still have online and intact?
Who knows which games has been shuttered by Three Rings, by date of closure, to be more specific, & which of their games are still running in the present being today?
@Bernston:
You can look at threerings.net to find that out. I know of at least three of their games that have shut down recently, not counting Doctor Who: WiT. They are Whirled, Game Gardens, and Bang! Howdy. Although Bang! Howdy is still up and running, just not exactly owned by Three Rings anymore. They might have possibly shut down some of their app games/facebook games as well, but I never kept track of those.
EDIT: Whirled is still operating as well, just not owned exactly by Three Rings either. Both Bang! Howdy and Whirled are owned by Grey Havens, LLC now, which from my understanding is basically Daniel James and Micheal Bayne. (for those of you who don't know who those people are, Daniel James is the ex-CEO of Three Rings, and Micheal Bayne is also an ex-founder of Three Rings.)
Here is a quote from the help page of Bang! Howdy:
"It's the Wild West out here pardner! Bang! Howdy used to be operated by a small game company without a whole lotta money. Now it's operated by the two ex-founders of that game company with even less money. In fact, everything is paid for out of their own pockets and out of the goodness of their hearts.
"That means there ain't much in the way of formal support, technical or otherwise. We don't have the resources to operate forums any longer, and we definitely don't have the resources to pay people to help you be nice to each other. So you'll just have to do it yerselves!
"If you have technical or gameplay questions, you can try asking over on the Gaming Stack Exchange site. Be sure to tag your question with #bang-howdy.
"Good luck out there, and thanks fer playin'!
-- Sherrifs Mike and Cleaver"
Mike is Micheal Bayne, and Cleaver is Daniel James.
Where's Rise of Knights? I wanted to try it a bit but not found on google play, did they just deleted it?
@Hmmlol
So, to recap, these games that were formerly operated by Three Rings were shuttered, &/or handed over to other companies, yes? Does this still mean Three Rings will be maintaining their focus towards continuing Spiral Knights now? If so, I think it's for the best, since Three Rings still is a little company, & it was very difficult to keep up with those games they had at once with a very little amount of people, anyway. I wish them good luck in maintaining their games at Grey Havens. That, & maybe it's the fact that mobile games are just too costly to keep up.
Boy, with news like these, it really gets you up to speed on what's been going on with them lately. Thanks again for these latest news.
@Mechzhar
I don't think it's available any longer, but, if anyone still has it, best post online videos about that, with no commentary, to maintain preservation.
@Bernston:
I think you are viewing this incorrectly. Just because they own a game doesn't mean they are actively working on it. They weren't "keeping up with" Whirled or Bang! Howdy. Bang! Howdy ceased "development" many years ago, long before Spiral Knights released in 2011. As far as I can tell, they are actively working on Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights and perhaps one of their apps. It's possible they have other projects in the works as well. In a game developing company you can't just stay with one game forever. The game will eventually die off.
Grey Havens is basically owning the games and paying for the servers so the loyal fans can keep playing. They aren't actively pursuing further development of the games. I'm sure if Puzzle Pirates shuts down, Grey Havens will try to obtain it as well.
As for "what's going on with them lately," well, Daniel left OOO April 2014 so that's not exactly "recent."
So, I know I'm super super late on the discussion of Rise of Knights here. The reason for me posting here is because people have been requesting actual gameplay of the game since its debut. I'm happy to announce I have recorded every session of gameplay including the crashes.. ooooh those crashes.
When will the videos be up? I was planning on this a long time ago but due to time constraints on work and college I couldn't edit the clips together... Until TODAY! It will be less than 15 mins of gameplay each along with commentary by me. The videos will start being uploaded by October 17,2015.
Now due to crashes when I started playing... there may be some repetition of certain things such as game elements and design on the commentary part. On the gameplay aspect, I had to repeat missions over and over, not due to grinding (sometimes), but the fact that there is a point where you can't advanced through the world until the developers update the game.
I got as far as the game would let me. New characters besides the ones in the tutorials were introduced later on during the updates that sadly not many know about yet.
I hope everyone enjoys, honestly the game was fun to go mobile. Sad that it's gone now, but the legend will live on.
That's great to hear. What did you use to record?
At any rate, I'm going to try to post some picks again. Let me know if they actually show up. This is my first time actually using Dropbox to host shared images, so please bare with my noobishness. I made a file of screenshots for RoK so if I can figure this out it should be enough until Solo's videos arrive.
I shared my images and did the email verification, so this link should work.

But does anyone have gifs of the victory animations, or do I have to wait for Solotron to upload the videos?
@Awsome-Incarnate: I used AirServer using the free trial. I was about to purchase the full version if all went well but since the game is down, no point in me spending money.
@Sono-Forum: If anything, i'll try to get ya a Gif through my DeviantArt page before I upload my vids, cause that sounds like a good idea.

NPCs and Prologue:

-Greywell is the very possible Owlite I mentioned before. Either that or a Knight with an owlish helm. Either way, main guiding character.
-Albrecht explains Knight Evolution, which gives certain units the ability to Evolve to a higher Star rank.
-Stonebrand explains how using the Battle Arena can grant you Sparks to power up your Knights's stats. He's the second most common NPC to actually converse with the player, next to Greywell himself.
-Lyka explains Traits, Unique Variants that Knights can be obtained with, though there's a difference between a Knight and a Weapon Trait.
-Voldol is the game's Merchant. Very, very likely a masked Gremlin. His shop restocks itself every two real-time hours, and the prices for items are generally resonable considering the high rate that you can get Crowns ahem Coins in RoK.
