Remove them just from steam, just as said above^^
5/18 Release Discussion
I'd say its fair to keep the old achievements, cuz the players who have them achieved it :)
Simple as that.
If it were up to me I'd tie those achievements to something new. The various miner cheevos were basically just for collecting X minerals so why not just say collect a total of X minerals, removing the deposit part from them?
-Achievements that are tied to mechanics that no longer exist wont be obtainable nor will we change mechanics so that they are obtainable.
-nor will we change mechanics so that they are obtainable
Does that mean that there really is no intention to expand the useage of minerals past Sprite food? If so, I find that ridiculously wasteful.
The main reason for the Arcade dropping the mineral deposits was due to the overabundance of Valestone and Moonstone caused by the three Battle Sprite types requiring each a different mineral to create their respective food, which saturated the gate themes in the clockworks. The solution that has been long due since then has always been to add two new Battle Sprites that would use Valestone and Moonstone as the remaining ressources to even things out and allow mineral deposits to be in service once again without causing anymore oversaturation and then allow the related achievements to be possible again.
I can't believe for a second that this wasn't planned at all for the past three years. What is holding it all back?
I would say...remove the achievements altogether. They do more harm than good.

Not necessarily. With the Arcade Redux, Nick was probably planning for something to totally replace minerals. Of course, this does break the lore a bit. I have no idea what they were planning.
Also, for those of you who want things that show off your long-standing with the game, well...I don't see why you care. I mean, if you care that much, I would think that you'd be upset about not getting a Ground Breaker set. (And if you do have GB, then you really can't complain.)
I mean, I worked hard to get master miner for the reward of achieving master miner. Having the tag on my knight is a nice little way to say "yup, i worked for this".
Having it be on steam is less important since that's not my knight, but having it stay around is nice. The achievements aren't hurting anyone, however the steam ones are preventing plenty of players from getting that nice "100% games" on steam.
having unobtainable achievements which form part of the progression's percentage is a slap to the face for any completionist.
i'm fine with having missed out on those, but having a 98% telling me it's my fault for not knowing about the game back then is not fun.
on a similar subject: I'm sure you already know about the bug that prevents you from getting the gold emblem in the "a visit to the lab" mission on certain occasions, but wanted to point it out anyways since I just recently started over because of it.
it should be a quick fix and would prevent further frustration for users that care about these things.
missions that can not be repeated should give you the golden emblem by default anyways...

I would like to see a head-to-head comparison list about this. I see it differently, so I don't find that statement compelling in the slightest.

I do not recall any part about Nick looking to replace the minerals. But breaking the lore is a serious offense to deal with, since it would divide the community just as badly, if not moreso, as the legacy achievements themselves. In fact, the lockdown of the achievements in question just happens to be the result of such changes from the 2013 update.
-Also, for those of you who want things that show off your long-standing with the game, well...I don't see why you care.
I care because they're memories of my engagement into playing the game as it used to be at the time. The game changed and people change too. But not Achievements, they never change. That makes them milestones that allow us to reflect back into what kept us going across the different times. They serve no practical purpose, but nobody can really decide wheter or not they are meaningless to those who have them.
That said, we already were given words that the SEGA-licensed cosmetics will see no change in integrity within the game despite having become effectively unobtainable anymore** (outside of the market, but still). Why should it be different here? And come to think of it, do people still occasionally acquire a Purple Spiral Medal these days?
*With a big IF, I don't see whatever treshold is forcing this to happen. I strongly recommend that you guys hold out on this for a while, especially when there are more pressing matters...

...such as this.
**I take that argument back. Still curious about the Purple Spiral Medals, however.
Agreed with @Neekkoth. Fix that "thing" that prevents you from getting the gold emblem. As far as i am aware of "a visit to the lab" is not the only mission.
I can't talk from experience as I have only just started playing but I imagine that (and certainly with other games that I have played) it is nice for a veteran player to have something that shows their standing/ loyalty/ how long they've played.
A better solution I believe would be to just convert the achievements to artifacts.
While we can add achievements for other things in the future, we have two options for the unobtainable ones now:
- Remove these achievements altogether
- Remove them just from steam
Which would you all prefer? Note that by me asking, I'm not making any promises. I'm just looking for feedback that we can take into consideration.
I can't imagine someone being oppose to keeping the achievements in game with a reason other than "I don't care". If you're seriously bugged by them being kept in game, you have issues and should come to your senses. These achievements has so little meaning to other knights than the achiever. Let the veterans have their bragging rights. Go cry in a corner if you "missed out" on gold miner or what ever.
tldr keep in game.
I really don't mind if the obsolete achievements stay or go, but in case you really want to make all achievements fully achievable again, my solution would be to do the either one of the following:
Convert the obsolete achievements to artifacts like Dahall says.
or
Instead of changing mechanics for the same achievement you could change the goal for the obsolete achievements, while still retaining a relevant difficulty. (Example: Miner achievement: instead of depositing minerals in a gate, use the amount of minerals in an alchemy machine). Though that solution is relatively far fetched.
Or simply use a global counter of how many minerals in total have been amassed instead. The names of the achievements will still stay true to collecting them AND they will be relevant Steam achievers again.
I still would like to know what is keeping the team from putting the alternatives in motion that's pushing them into taking these limited options, other than the transition of the company and the game as well as the progress of their roadmap.
- Though that solution is relatively far fetched.
If just for having to use the alchemy machines, maybe, but the general idea seems to be anything but. I would still prefer to see the Arcade reworked to allow the intended conditions to be fulfilled for everyone.
It's not that they can't change them, they don't want to.
I'd say just remove them then. Hopefully we get some new achievements too.
After reviewing the limitations on Steam and how achievements currently work, we've decided to remove them from Steam and leave them in game. This allows people to get 100% on Steam if they decide to set that goal. With that being said, it's always possible we add more.
Oh goodie. Thanks for the change! I remember talking about this way back when the legacy achievements were first made legacy so it's good to finally have closure with it. :)
Link a new cheevo to a new SK hat for TF2.
What will happen to green and blue minerals? Will they stay in game and have no use? Will it be changed any time soon? Cronus? :P
@ Cronus
The removal of the legacy achievements appears to have broke the Steam Rarest Achievement Showcase. The removed Gold Miner achievement (0.12%) still shows up in it, but now has a broken icon and no description. See: http://i.imgur.com/Ylx19yf.png
Also, the unlock dates for a good portion of the remaining achievements (on Steam) have disappeared.
Given the rarity of the Gold Miner achievement (0.12% is very low across all Steam games), anyone who elected to use the Rarest Achievement Showcase on Steam would likely now have a broken icon on their Steam Profile page. Is there any way for you to fix this? If not, then it might have been better to replace the legacy achievements with new ones instead of removing them outright.
Mine doesn't have that problem, the achievement simply vanished from my showcase (not rarest achievement showcase).
I'd assume it might be more on steam's end now.
@ Fangel
Have you tried changing your Achievement Showcase to Rarest Achievement Showcase?
I checked several profiles that had legacy achievements and the Rarest Achievement Showcase; they all had broken icons as a result of the removal. Here's another example (Marvellous Miner achievement in this case): http://i.imgur.com/UZ8K9PZ.png
Also, to clarify my first post, by Gold Miner achievement, I meant the Master Miner achievement (the 10k minerals deposited one).
It appears Steam is still counting the removed achievements for each profile. My "total number of achievements unlocked" as shown in the Steam Showcase hasn't dropped since the removal.
EDIT: To add on to my last point regarding Steam still counting the removed achievements, if your last unlocked achievement in SK is a legacy one, the Spiral Knights tab in the Steam library still shows the legacy achievement with the corresponding title. See: http://i.imgur.com/ZyWVIex.png
I changed a showcase to rarest achievements and they aren't showing up. If you/they set it again, it might fix itself. Or maybe it also will if you get another achievement.

It's entirely possible that this is an issue on Steam's end and your rarest achievements are not recalculated constantly. We can look into in the future if it's still happening.
Seeing you guys fix things, even little by little, lets us know you care. Very much appreciated!
Glad to see the game getting tweaked be it little by little!
Thanks for letting us know, Cronus. ^^ I would've been fine if they were gone in game too but this is great as well!
That's interesting that the legacy achievements are not showing for you under the Rarest Achievement Showcase. What showcase were you using previously (or were you not using any at all)? Did you earn any Steam achievements today (post-removal)?
I already tried swapping to a different showcase and back again when I first noticed the broken icon, but it didn't change anything. Haven't tried your second suggestion yet, but hopefully earning a new Steam achievement will fix it.
Now that this game broke away from its captors at Sega, what will happen now? Even if it's not something direct, is there any word on what might be in the works?
I had Badges before, tried regular achievements and rarest. I didn't get any achievements today.
Oh just realized since I didn't see your screenshots before, Master Miner was at 0.62% and I had 6 ones that are rarer (all SK ones lol). So it wouldn't have shown up for me anyway.
Yes, oh yes, thank you! Steam achievements are honestly and truly very important to me, I am ecstatic to see this change. I even wrote a physical letter to OOO about this a few months ago. Whether the achievements are made re-obtainable by some means, or removed entirely, all that matters is that 100% is possible (which I've now achieved). Oh, the folks at the 100% Achievements Group will be happy to hear this!
Hrmm, that's even more odd since the other profiles that I've seen that were using the rarest achievement showcase (and had previously earned legacy achievements) also had broken icons on their Steam profile page.
For your reference, Master Miner (10k minerals) was at 0.12% (see: http://i.imgur.com/Ylx19yf.png). Marvellous Miner (2.5k minerals) was at 0.62% (see: http://i.imgur.com/UZ8K9PZ.png).
EDIT: As an update, I was able to fix the broken showcase icons by earning a new Steam achievement (in another game). Once a new achievement was earned, the old SK legacy achievements were removed and the total # of achievements earned was recalculated by Steam. Thanks for the suggestion Flowchart.
Having those achievements was a major bragging point on Steam. It would be nice to see some sort of special item for players that achieved them back in the day, or better yet bring back custom gates.
Was expecting all the Haven textures to become grey but this is fine too
Cronus plox, we need literal Grey Haven now.
Also less stingy vendors that don't pay 25 crowns for recipes, for real
Jokes aside, all these changes happening right now are awesome, woot :D
I have 100% achievements on Steam as well, but the achievements themselves aren't anything other than a way to say you've played the game for a long time. Removing the legacy ones from Steam only allows new players to "100%" the game, however I can still have my badge of completion. I'm proud of my master miner achievement, but I only need it in-game, not on Steam.
