problem with steam authentication after steam client update

earlier today i got a popup from steam asking me to restart my client as there was an update that should be applied.
i had just closed Spiral knights before getting it and now i cannot log in. i get the following error message:

"We experienced a problem authenticating with Steam. Please ensure that the Steam client is running and that you are not logged in elsewhere."

i had just be running the game fine before the update and now i cant? I'm definitely not logged in elsewhere

does this happen every time steam updates? and should i try to hold off on updating steam as long as possible to have continued access to SK?

It might be working better now, sometimes Steam does that IMMEDIATELY after it updates.

Steam may not have cleared your last login session, or may not have updated right. Checking for a Steam update, restarting your router/modem combo might help.

Yeah. It just happened to me

Yeah. It just happened to me too. So I updated Steam..... logged back on, and I'm still getting the authentication error.

Darn. And I was just about to take down the Twins too. :(

I can't get in either. I have tried logging out of steam, restarting computer, powercycling the router. All to no avail.

The steam update is really

The steam update is really goofy. I had to close the client, restart it, update it, close it again, and it finally shut itself down and I had to open it again.

*EDIT*

Got it updated correctly and everything (including SK) is working.

If you still can't get in,

If you still can't get in, it's a Steam issue and should be reported to Steam.

Again, you need to update and then exit Steam----logout and close the actual program, not just close all the windows----and restart Steam.

My client is still having

My client is still having issues, restarted Steam and restarted computer like three times, once under the original US locale and the native JP locale I currently set my computer to, tried to update Steam but the client is already up to date, tried leaving Steam off for a couple hours before logging in again, nothing. Tried validating the Spiral Knights install and defragging it, reinstalled it, nothing.

You might have to damage the

You might have to damage the install to force a repair to the steam client. The problem is its hard to tell what files need to be replaced without being able to see a log file of a messed up client.

Huh

I have the same problem...

Nothing I do seems to be working...

At first, I freaked out and thought that someone had hacked my account, cuz it said 'ensure you are not logged on elsewhere' so I changed my password >>

Then I thought of checking here.

Have same issue

Happened a couple hours ago, reinstalled steam, spiral knights, restarted steam, computer everything, but the issues persists Cannot authenticate with Steam.

Joining the bandwagon

Pretty much did the whole restart steam, PC, clean install of steam, went offline/online and "switched" users so I had to re-enter my info. The update pretty much has to be it, I closed spiral knights, applied the update and didn't boot the game again till 4 hours later. Wasn't able to get on.

Had this problem earlier in the evening. restarted everying, tried again. shut down my computer, watched a Giants game, came back. Still has the problem.

I use a Mac with an intel core 2, so if this is affecting PC users, this is an issue with the steam connection to the java client.

This is the Steam forum thread about the issue. The only thing I haven't tried yet is actually installing SK to a different computer and testing that.

The weird thing is that a lot of people are still able to log in through Steam and play normally.

Still not working

I'm experiencing the same issue. I only use Steam on one computer, and I was just playing Spiral Knights hardcore this weekend during the 5 energy deal. Is there a fix for those of us whom the update screwed over? It isn't just a "Steam issue" as the game devs are utilizing Steam for distribution, which means if there is a problem and we clearly state it here, then they need to get on the phone and get Steam to fix the distribution of their game. I'd really like to get back to work on my gear. :3

@Amarothia : The steam client handles authentication, and its not the distribution copy steam uses since its just a snapshot of the game client back from august.

I've tried everything I could think of to break the SK client, even cycling through the different JREs, and I can't reproduce the issue. Seems like the only common factor so far is the affected users were prompted by Steam to restart for the patch. I manually checked for patch, and its working perfectly fine, but steam was acting really weird during the update process. When it closed it, it looked like it got stuck... so I watched the process for awhile and it closed itself out after about 30 seconds but I never saw the update bar.

I've been having an identical problem since updating the Steam client. Nothing's worked. I'm just submitting error reports and hoping for the best.

Can someone pull up the projectx.log and see what it says. I'm hoping its catching the error somehow, and give at some kind of direction on figuring this out.

If it's per account level then it still could still be fixed by user manipulation of the Steam files.

I remember a while back with Steam that users suffering unusual problems with the client were advised to delete the ClientRegistry.blob file and then to start Steam to re-acquire it. Might be worth a shot.

Similar Issue

I noticed the inability to authenticate problem 11 hours ago and have tried some of the suggestions which have involved forcing steam to reupdate itself. None have worked. The problem still persist for me, as of now.

To be honest, the game was working fine 24 hours ago (after an update had applied and all). The only thing that I did differently recently was that I had logged onto my profile at the steam website at another computer (16 hrs ago?). I had to verify and authenticate this other computer. I also used that (other) computer to check out my spiral knights inventory (because I had never explicitly done so from the website and was curious). Perhaps doing so somehow made a connection between that computer the SK server. I didn't log out of the steam website on that computer yet so perhaps that connection is somehow active.

Anyway, this likely isn't the cause of the inability to authenticate but I thought I'd throw out my two cents. Hope this gets fixed soon.

Problem Occurs After Updating Steam

If this problem occurred directly after a Steam update and the firewall is already disabled, please try this process:

Log out and exit Steam
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (the default location). If you have installed Steam to a different folder, please locate that folder now.
Rename the file "ClientRegistry.blob" to ClientRegistryOld.blob and then close the Steam folder
Launch Steam and login. Steam should update, re-create the file, and then you will be able to play

This also did not fix the issue.

i've removed STEAM and all local content and reinstalled STEAM
which included deleting and reinstalling spiral knights
i still have the authentication problem as well.

It is not a network/windows problem, the problem is between Steam API and SK's Auth server agent.
I can't login in Windows 7, XP and MacOSX.

EDIT: Connection to the SK server is fine ([::192.168.1.101]:50163->[::184.73.171.156]:directplaysrvr)

Maybe the problem is that the new Steam client update may have changed the way it sends the credentials and that's why SK doesn't recognize them.

If that were true, then every Steam user would be locked out. This is almost looking like an account-specific problem, like Starlin said in another thread.
Were you logged in at the time Steam updated? It might even be a regional thing, it's really not clear.

Going with that steam might not have cleared my last login session. I exited out of steam and didn't open steam 12+ hours. I just tried login on and still get the same error. Today/tonight is when I usually play at least 10 hours. haha

Since we are about 24 hours of not being able to play SK, is steam or OOO going to give us some ce or at least a free mist tank?

Unlikely. This bug has not deprived you of a service that you've paid for, and if it's Steam's fault than Three Rings shouldn't have to reimburse you for anything. If you've paid for CE and now don't have an opportunity to use it, you're still not being deprived of it completely.

It sucks, I know, but computers are like super complicated. Bugs are to be expected with games like this. :/

I see your reasoning as to why people wont get CE, but it will be 24 hrs of downtime, that people could not use the free mist energy that they charging, or they couldn't use due to not being able to log on. So, for some people that could be a loss of 100 ME because they couldn't use there energy last night.

You're still not entitled for compensation for something that's free, that Three Rings does not have a contractual obligation to make available to you 100% of the time. That's part and parcel with any free game or service, like Facebook or Google.

I digress. This thread isn't really the place to talk compensation.

Has ANYONE received a response to their support ticket?
Was ANYONE logged in at the time Steam updated? EDIT: Mkay, this doesn't seem to be a factor.

At first glance, the problem seems to be account specific, but we don't know what the common circumstances are that cause the bug. Even people who had it and fixed it can't reproduce it.

Same, I was prompted to restart Steam and I did, never had any issues from getting updates from Steam before nor have I ever had issues logging into Spiral Knights through Steam. I was not on Spiral Knights when Steam prompted me to restart.

Well I am not totally sure when exactly steam updated. The last time I was on, and before I was just kicked off, oct 27 around 10:20pm-10:45pm EST. I sent a ticket this morning, around 6am before work today of oct 28. There is no response yet. Now that I am home, still finding that my account cannot pass through this issue. D: !

I'm also experiencing the same problem. Is it really a steam update related issue?

I received / installed the steam client update last night. Restarted steam and played SK for a few hours before I logged off. I only noticed the annoying message preventing me from logging in this morning (around 11) when I booted the game up. Now it's 11 in the evening and I still cannot log in.

Still unable to log in - reinstalled Steam using Steam's recommendation of wiping steam directory, reinstalled SK from scratch - still no joy. Non-Steam client works fine from same machine.

Worked for Two seconds

After saying cannot authenticate for so long it finally let me in, got the the char select screen, choose my knight and it froze went to black...it is now again saying cannot authenticate lol...Is Spiral knights just teasing me now.

Indeed, using an account not bound to steam, works on the same machine. I've verified with friends that my account that IS bound to steam is not logged in. Thus the message of that account being logged in elsewhere would be invalid.
