i've also tried changing download-region; still getting the same error
problem with steam authentication after steam client update
I've submitted my ticket and got some responses then I turned in what I had in those log files and my computers specs but no other answer so far, anyone else?
Just curious, and if you don't mind, could you copy and paste the response you were given? I'm just wondering what to expect what general kind of things they will answer or ask for. Thanks.
My brother can play in my computer using Steam... so it is not a Steam problem...
We all have something in common here, we all have linked our Steam accounts to this forum and we now can't be able to play since the last SK update... uhmmmmmmmmmmmm weird?
I didn't link my account to this website until after this problem started.
Yeah and still no communication from Steam Support or Spiral Knights Support regarding this is really disheartening. At this point I'm hoping they release an unrelated patch soon and maybe everything will go back to normal :(
So it's affecting specific accounts after the steam update. It could be that upon trying to get on for the first time after the update, the game did log-in but then got the error. All accounts could still be frozen in that log-in screen, as apparently only very few people (if not, no one) have managed to fix it.
Now I just noticed the entirety of my CE is now set to 'Unclaimed' while viewing my Steam Inventory, while my Crowns stay in my regular inventory. What is going on?
Oh crap, I got the same thing, I do think this could help identify who has the problem if everyone that cannot log onto spiral knights have "Unclaimed CE" in their inventories.
I have also noticed attempting to log into Spiral Knights usually sets your status in your Friends list to be playing Spiral Knights and the text goes green and reads the usual 'In game: Spiral Knights' or whatever, that's normal.
But when I open the game, the text goes green, but goes back to blue for a few seconds before going back to green again. Maybe the game errors and thinks you're logged in initially, but something happens along the way and the game closes, but reopens and Spiral Knights thinks you've already been logged in and gives an authentication error.
Again, might be nothing but speculation but it is something different I've noticed in comparison to other games that work fine on Steam.
Dairi: Perhaps more puzzlingly, according to my Steam Inventory, I don't seem to have any CE at all. Which I'm fairly sure is incorrect.
hmm... I was thinking, may be a dumb idea, but wouldn't it work if the whole SK serve reset? like, make a quick warning to the player and then close the server and reopen a minute later... maybe that should work...?
That's because Steam launches the Spiral Knights' Launcher, then the SK launcher opens the regular game. Steam detects the process, and when SK Launcher closes and launch the game it closes for a sec, that's why you see that.
Well this did happen to a few of us maybe more than two days ago (not me though, that was yesterday night). But this morning already had that daily server maintenance reboot. I guess we shall wait and see if the next maintenance will resolve this issue, or well do narping/nothing. I think it's something to look foward to. D:
if this morning's didn't work, why should the next one? they need to coordinate with steam to find out what the hell happened ~ why was THEIR update so detrimental to OOO's game?
I don't see this mentioned, but this issue has also affected OOO's other game, Puzzle Pirates.
I had my friend log into his Steam account on my computer and it still will not let me on.
Hm...Well, I want to play on my actual account, seeing as that's the one with all my gear and progress.
Well. Everyone with this problem should just post what they've done that may be linking our situations.
I'll start:
My account originated from steam. It was not an SK account that was bound to steam, it started from steam.
I used my steam account to log onto these forums before this all started.
I have never paid to play any of Steams games, nor this one.
I live in New Zealand, in case this could be a region issue.
Any other regular account, eg my friend's SK account NOT bound to steam, works fine.
I have a forum Avatar?
So, after emailing back and forth a few times with Spiral Knights support, I sent them my system specs as well as the contents of my launcher and projectx logs. Only thing they'll say is that they're looking into the issue :/ I hope a fix gets applied soon, I want to be able to play!
They did a server reboot this afternoon (approx 5pm CST) with a mention of "steam trading fix" which did not solve my login issue. So I wouldn't expect ANOTHER maintenance reboot to solve anything.
It's so frustrating to not play when you know you didn't do anything wrong to prevent from playing! GRRRRRR!!! :(
Well I was playing SK when that Steam update went through, but decided to go to bed. When I tried to log in yesterday it gave me the error. It hasn't been fixed since. I'm on Windows 7, in West Coast USA. I got SK through Steam. Didn't get on the forums until this bug made me. :3 If reinstalling everything isn't working, that means it's a server side issue. But if rebooting the server isn't doing it, then that means it's a file on their server that isn't updating. In other words, there is a roster (alive or not) that is keeping track of everyone playing, and our accounts have been statically added to that list. Therefore everytime we attempt to log on to it, we are "already playing elsewhere". This means they don't have proper account data garbage collection. They need to add a "kill other users playing on my account" option, and then it'll be fixed, because it will log out the fake static "user" in their data files. Btw, killing other users would mean simply matching up the incoming account number with their roster of "playing people" and "booting" the other player, in this case the static data, in other cases it could possibly boot someone who'd hacked your account. Useful either way.
That or when their server goes down for maintenance, they could just straight up delete the "currently playing users" and backup file of that rather than trusting their code to do it correctly. Manual file maintenance ftw!
Just a thought.
"At first glance, the problem seems to be account specific, but we don't know what the common circumstances are that cause the bug. Even people who had it and fixed it can't reproduce it."
so where are these people that have fixed the problem. I would like to try what they tried.
If doing a server shut down and straight kicking off every single player who is actively playing just to resolve all these issues, then they should do it. It's a win win situation for everyone! :)
Btw, I'm in the West Coast, USA as well and running on a Mac. My brother can play and I'm watching him play. I've tried to log into his computer and it doesn't work. It's just so frustrating! :(
I've also had the authentication problem. I've restarted my computer and consequently, steam, and I still get the same messages. I used my brother's account on steam to see if I got the same problem, using the same computer, and it went through. Thus I don't think it has to do with the update. It's my account and my account only.
The last thing I did was that I had just finished a jelly king run, and the moment I went back up to haven using the elevator, the game crashed on me, and it hasn't let me in since. It has been more than 24 hours.
Reinstalling spiral knights did absolutely nothing (except waste time and bandwidth).
@Lanseal That's what I'm saying. My fiance was playing SK on her Mac next to me when Steam updated. We haven't been able to get back on since. That means both our accounts, as well as yours, have probably been added statically as "playing" thus we will never be able to log in with our accounts again until they hard boot off every "playing" player (ideally during a server maintenance time) in order to reset their logs.
Authentication is fairly simple.
boolean isPlaying;
method authenticate {
If (listOfUsersAndPasswords.contains(player.userAndPassword)) {
If (player.isPlaying)
return false;
// Error: "We experienced a problem logging in with Steam. Please ensure that Steam is running and you are not logged in elsewhere.";
Else
return true;
Else If...
}
method logIn {
If (player.authenticate()) {
SpiralKnightsMain.start();
player.isPlaying = true;
} Else game.displayErrorMessage();
}
method logOff {
spiralKnightsMain.exit();
player.isPlaying = false; // This would be the part that probably got messed up by/during the update to Steam, and thus never happened.
}
"Is the user/password correct?" If Yes then, "Is the user currently playing on IP/=current IP listed with Account?" If Yes, show error message "User is currently logged into another computer... etc." If No, allow log in. Those of us with the problem, obviously across multiple time zones/regions/OS, are just on the "playing" list due to some sort of malfunction when Steam was updated. Steam can't fix it though, only OOO can in SK. If the same thing is happening in Puzzle Pirates, then it sounds like a bug in their general logging out code (code sharing is notorius in house, especially with Java). In that it glitched when removing us from the "playing" list of users.
I hope this helps the devs. If they read this care. :/
P.S. My code is hella rusty, this is just one example of the madness that may be going on. Just one variable, isPlaying, could stop us all who have accounts that are flagged as that with no way for us to unflag them. isPlaying is obviously made up by me as an example. :3
I'm not exactly sure if the authentication would be that simple, though it sounds logical. I do have to say though that some people, including me, were not playing the game at all. I stopped playing, 10 minutes later steam wanted to update, and I decided to boot the game 3 hours later. No SK for me ;_;
The new steam update must be giving some sort of error info when logging in so it's either:
Spiral Knights gives the error every time a login is attempted from selected steam accounts that did the update.
Or
Spiral Knights accepts your first login after the update, Steam's info crashes it but account ends up in limbo, you can't log back again now.
If it's the latter, then OOO would have to look at Steam's new info on the update and modify the login system. I doubt Steam would go "deal with it" in this case either. Though considering the nature of it, I doubt this'll just be a server reboot.
I was hoping/thinking the problem would be fixed around now, when the odds are online players is at its lowest. Well, guess it is time to call it a night, its 3am here.
So to recap, this is what we know so far.
- The only obvious link to the problem is that people affected were those that ran the update shortly after logging off of SK.
- Puzzle Pirates are also affected, so the issues are occurring the account level.
- A server reboot hasn't cleared the problem, so whatevers wrong, its not soft or linked directly to the player's login status on the SK server (which would had been flushed during the reboot).
- Whatever error is occurring isn't being tracked by the logs, so we don't know if its Steam or the SK servers that are rejecting the login.
- And as far as anyone can tell, its not related to trade inventory in any way.
- This is different from the problem Steam had the other week (added)
Did I miss any details?
Can we add that this recent issue has persisted more than 48 hours, suggesting that I hear some people saying not playing for 2 days yesterday. Meaning that this issue maybe different from the ones that existed before this one? Hearing that some players got it fixed within moments of finding the issue, but that was like 10 days ago. This specific issue may not be linked or related like the previous.
I've the same issues. I sent a mail to the support, they told me they are aware of the issue and working on it.
i got this from OOO support today
Greetings,
I'm very sorry about this issue. The developers are looking into it and hope
to have it fixed as soon as possible. I'm sorry I don't have additional
information at this time, but please be patient while they work with Steam to
get everyone running again.
Best wishes,
- Aphrodite

Also the CE showing in this unnamed slot in the steam inventory is happening several days before this other problem. At least 1 week.
We hope that support resolve this issue =)
Can the Support please tell us when it will be fine again?
I would like to know when I will be able to get on the game again and play like a mad man :p
Should I send a lettre to OOO also or not?
Thanks a lot for the answers of the Support
they recently sent me an email asking in detail on my computer info as well as the steps i took when the error occurred. standard procedure, but they are still looking into it.
If you made few knights you would know that it shows as Unclaimed because CE doesn't belong to a single knight, CE belongs to the whole account - you can access your CE on your all knights, they don't get separate CE counters.
Day 3 - still no joy. Support emailed me concerning the trouble ticket I opened last night (9/28) asking for standard info about computer and steps taken. No updates since...
I'll keep saying - I WISH I could convert my steam account to a straight SK account.
I have both a laptop and a desktop, and I have been trying to connect to spiral knights at random times on both of them. Well, my desktop had updated steam on the day of release, but my laptop jut prompted me to restart to update today. So, this definitively takes out that the steam client was what messed it up and that it is all about the account.
I assume that three rings, steam, or whoever is doing whatever they can behind the scenes for Spiral Knights, and that puzzle game...thing... And I know we got some messages, or have heard from others that they heard that they [being those repair/techsavvy guys] are doing something. But couldn't we actually have an update on progress? Has a problem somewhere been detected? If so, is it a critical problem that may take the next 72 hours or so? I know this spot isn't usually visited by those actual people, but can they at least have announced it on the main spiral knights website or steam-news?
it's been almost 2 days for me, 3 or more days for others. D:
Yeah no updates here, I just got the standard 'Send us your statistics we're looking into the problem' e-mail from Support and that was it.
All they did was respond back with :
Thank you for contacting Steam Support.
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue.
We are aware of the problem and are investigating the issue further.
I'm starting to lose hope. I may even start playing Neopets because of this. At least their site isn't powered through Steam. >.<
I don't know whether this helps or makes things worse, but my brother (who was on at the same time, and lives just upstairs from me) got the update and updated at the same time. He can still log-in and play freely. :/
You should 'acquire' his computer and play :)
I have some interesting findings, im not sure if it is the same as what is found in the other thread exactly, but I cannot log into SK through steam, but my friend logged into steam on my computer, and he could log in just fine.
