It's obvious. Bechamel is the same gender as TF2's Pyro.
So, do you think Bechamel is Transgendered?
The knights have more than 2 genders? What if every colour was a different gender... oh dear...
@Ironskullkid Lol, I used to use the name Serenade as a username, as a MMBN3 reference. Good times.
Colors as genders? An astounding idea!
How could you forget the most famous one of all? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdo
I just want to say that I am so ridiculously pleased with this community for being mature and trans-inclusive and suchlike. It warms the cockles of my heart, and I mean that truly. Y'all are wonderful.
(Except you, Hetero, you should probably learn that that word is not a nice word. Better alternatives might be "is trans" or "is a trans person".)
"Some of us had learned not to never assume a gender long before that. a'la Lancer from Robotech: New Generation, and his forced Transvestism and subsequent burlesque act. :O"
OMG! I cant believe you remember that!!!! Yellow Dancer ^_^
Also honerable mention to Samus of Metroid going girl after defeating Mother Brain several times!
YELLOW DANCER thank you. Lancer was my favorite character because his concept was so deep. I like the fact that he was really a transvestite too, not a full gender conversion because of the upbringing. It was odd to wrap my head around it when I was 9 or whenever the series first rolled, and then after I was a little older, re-wrapping my head around it when I more completely understood the sexual ramifications of the whole thing.
It was odd to wrap my head around it when I was 9 or whenever the series first rolled,
Likewise, very profound. Probably my first introduction to the concept in my early years, which is probably the reason I could remember that name from the original after school airing without having to google it.
I don't think he's transgender, or specifically transgender.
There is a difference between cross-dressing and being transgender. There is also a difference between gender and gender roles. The girls wear dresses/pink, boys where jeans/blue is an example of a gender role, and not conforming to that does not particularly affect one's gender identity.
You mean, Bechamel's flavor is "fabulous."
rofl
Plus you are making an assumption. Maybe Bechamel, as a male, could just fancy purple hair and love puppies and ribbons? Very stereotypical of you to think that that and sexuality are related.
I don't know what kind of "assumption" you're talking about here, but I never made/hinted at any assumption that you thought I made, I mean, please learn to ENGLISH properly. I said that, as far as hermaphroditism goes, I think there could be an overlap of sexuality and gender. I don't think that this is necessarily correct, but to assume from that statement I made, that I think that there is a TOTAL OVERLAP is quite presumptuous of you.
To the person who actually used "it" as a pronoun for Bechamel.
I've always considered Bechamel to be a male. It sounds like a masculine name to me and the sauce is apparently named after a guy. I just get a male vibe from Bechamel's looks as well.
I always considered Bechamel to be female, what with the sauce and that helm (I totally want that, OOO I love you gaissogimmeonepleez <333) but then again my uncanny obsession with also looking god and being male threw me off. I eventually settled for male, because of the scissor holding method, its rather masculine to my eyes.
Oh boy does this topic open a can of worms... let's just do it the easy way.

Personally, I think Bechamel is an androgyne.

@41 I'm pansexual so you might want to alter that list of yours. And gender and sexuality are self defined so you can't put a number cap on either. Who's to say two people who identify as a gender that is neither male or female are identifying as the same gender? As far as Bechemel being transgender, if that were the case s/he'd only have one set of pronouns. Genderqueer or hermaphrodite would be more applicable (or bigender, although the two bigendered people I know prefer one set of pronouns all the time). It's also worth pointing out that humans can't be hermaphrodites. Knights, however, may be a different case.
Also, as someone who really gives a s*** about accuracy and lack of ignorance on this/these topic(s), I like this thread a lot. Yay for the SK community.
Yeah, I just feel like if someone doesn't know anything about the difference between sex and gender and might consider transgendered people to be a particular kind of homosexual, it's probably best not to confuse them by throwing out a bunch of terms they've never head before. Once you realize the difference, you start to become a more open-minded person and from there you can move on to realizing that gender's a self-defined thing which is basically a personal reaction to society and one's place in it, with some people falling into the same gender identity for entirely different reasons, and possibly some falling into different gender identities for the same reasons.
As an asexual, I definitely understand that sexuality isn't limited by sex or gender as well, it's simply grounded there by basic biology. I view it as a "how much are you attracted to X," with a different scale for every X. So someone who is pansexual might rank high when X is "people" or maybe when X is "caring and kindness" or some other trait which is mostly unrelated to gender. And someone who identifies as heterosexual might rank high when X is a trait or attribute most commonly expressed by the opposite sex, even though they're more interested in the trait than in the opposite sex itself.
As for Bechamel, it seems to me that her gender is undefined for the purpose of allowing anyone to choose the gender they believe she represents. So while I find that she's female, others would also be correct in finding that she's male, and in reality she is neither and possibly both at the same time.
Gonna drop this here because ze is genderfluid
I am very proud of this thread. It seems there has been a lot of evolution and acceptance culminating on the topic of sexual acceptance being fostered and condoned by younger and older players alike as time (the fire in which we burn) progresses.
One thing I would really like to see is the word "gay" refrained from being used as a derogatory blanket descriptive to indicate any number of things or situations that suck or annoy people. Assigning a sexual preference to a set of circumstances that doesnt met your approval is a very illogical and ignorant way to express displeasure, though I know that in many it is just ingrained and force of habit at this point because of its common use.
Also, I was wondering out of curiosity is there a glbt friendly guild in SK? Even with the outstanding maturity level demonstrated in this thread there will always be outliers and I think this might make for a great idea if it hasnt already been implemented.

I posted about this a few days ago on another forum. There's a guy in my friendship group (read: friend of my friends but certainly not my friend) who keeps using gay and f** in this way and then arguing "it isn't homophobic if I don't mean it like that" when I tell him to stop. Yes, yes it is, the very usage of the words implies negative connotations. I've known a lot of people who use it without thinking and most of them stop when I ask them to and explain what they're really saying but this guy just keeps on going.
As for the LGBT friendly guild, I don't know of one, but I vote myself guild master as the queerest kid I know.
Would a LGBT friendly guild be a guild composed out of LGBT people or just a guild where nobody really cares about gender and sexuality?
I know that the guild I'm in has an explicit anti-discrimination policy, to the point that members have been kicked out for violating it. I'm sure there are others as well.
Eurydice is sweatin' bullets.
"SOMEONE SAY SOMETHING BAD!"
...but it's not happening.
"SOMEONE GO OFF-TRACK SO I CAN GREMLIN-CHATTER THIS!"
...but Bechamel is still tenuously the main topic.
I'd like to think that Nick slowly glides by Eurdydice's cubical in his big office chair. "So...how's that thread goin?"
"Fine! Nothing yet!"
"Mmmm." And he keeps on rolling on, a slow chuckle in his wake.
1) What Bechamel's Gender is? (Male/Female/Transgender)
and 2) What is Bechamel's sexuality? Is he/she attracted to Men, Women or both?
2) What is Bechamel's sexuality? Is he/she attracted to Men, Women or both?
Nobody was talking about that directly as far as I can remember, but now that you've mentioned it so openly, this thread is bound to take a turn into a very... shady area.
I have to confess, though: when I fist saw Bechamel, I thought she was female, but my view of his gender/sex started to vacillate.
Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring
No, it's not a Bananaphone. That's the sound of the Shipping Bell.
I've got Bechamel x Punch. Together they can make your gear really unique, in different ways. It's a match made in Haven.
But that leads to the question, what exactly is Punch's gender? And has anyone ever seen a female gremlin? Perhaps it's difficult for us, as knights, to tell the difference between the sexes of gremlins. In that case, Punch could very well be female, which would mean Bechamel is attracted to either females, gremlins, or both.
I don't think the Knights are sexual creatures. They sometime prefer a gender specification, but they don't uh...work on blacksmithing. If you get my drift.
I thought our knights were robots?
I think it's cruel to robots to apply antiquated gender or sexuality terms to them; they're incredibly limiting to humans, they're doubly limiting to robots who don't have the biological base for that to even matter.
That said, I'm going to vote for Strangers x Snipes as the best shipping combo.
I thought our knights were robots?
Robots don't eat or grow teeth, hair and nails (see DVS and that one Vitasuit). They also don't sleep, for that matter.
Yeah, but that's equipment. They're just swapping out some parts for other parts.
Also: most modern computers have a sleep mode for power saving. Just sayin'. We're prolly robots, not just dudes in suits.
There are other options for what the knights are beyond "robot" and "person." I'm convinced they're just something else entirely.
The knights don't eat, they consume energy.
The don't have teeth, hair, or nails of their own. They do have Accessories and pieces of Lisks/Wolvers/etc built into their garments. Our sleep is just a sleep mode with a humanized animation, as we can enter and exit it at will, and not suffer any effects without it.
robots. With souls inside.
Yeah, but that's equipment. They're just swapping out some parts for other parts.
This would make sense as far as hair, teeth, etc. goes (switch them anytime to accessorize like a freaky Barbie doll), but not for eating.
Also robots cannot into emotion. Robots can't laugh, hug, blow kisses.
And they can't flex, either.
Spirals are likely bio-mechanical or cyborgs of some kind, but at the very least, they have mechanical components and they are organisms.
Our sleep is just a sleep mode with a humanized animation, as we can enter and exit it at will, and not suffer any effects without it.
I mean sleep status.

That is where I started wondering about it. If we are going to talk about Bechamel's gender, we might as well talk about his/her sexuality. Just seems to make sense, to me at least.
Sexuality =/= gender.
I vote for a lock. We've explored this subject in a wonderfully deep fashion, but now it begs for offensive tangents. We wanna keep this thread beautiful and clean.
We want dead James Dean, not dead Elvis.
Just like valve did about the pyro, also, personaly i think bechamel is a she.
EDIT: after looking better, i still think mainly that bechamel is a she, but still has the probability of being a "frabujous" he.
Dunno I haven't licked Bechamil.
You probably did.
Dirty.
> I vote for a lock. We've explored this subject in a wonderfully deep fashion, but now it begs for offensive tangents.
I don't think "This thread is awesome, so I'm gonna lock it down now" is a great precedent to set. This thread IS awesome, so it may live. If jerkery/rulebreaking happens, we'll deal with the causes of the problems individually.
I was always under the impression that Spiral Knights didn't actually have a gender or sex, but rather were just animate energy given form by whatever equipment they happen to be using. That's why they don't have any features--aside from eyes and a nose-like thing--even when they're using a helmet that doesn't cover any part of their face. Thus referring to any given Knight as "he" or "she" is purely an anamorphism; a product of a race which defines a significant part of its interactions based on gender suddenly interacting with a race which has no gender.
1) What Bechamel's Gender is? (Male/Female/Transgender)
Transgender is not a separate gender. A transgender person is either male born into a female body, or female born into a male body. The former is still male and the latter is still female. It's not a third gender.
If you think about it, Bechamel is the only one who has the power to de-flower knights...
"Transgender is not a separate gender."
You are incorrect, sir or madam. "Gender" refers to self-conceptions of sexual identity, while "sex" refers to physical body properties. To elucidate, "gender" is a product of the mind, while "sex" is a product of the body. Contrary to popular belief, the two are not interchangeable.
No, you just didn't understand what I said. Gender is between the ears and sex is between the legs, I know that, have you bothered to read the whole thread? My point was that saying someone who is transgender possesses a gender that is neither male nor female is completely incorrect. By very definition they are male or female, with their sex being the opposite. How did you miss that?
So no, transgender is not a separate gender.
It is possible for someone to be born with ambiguous sexual organs. This IS a real thing and while yes, many transgendered people are born with the wrong set of equipment so to speak, it is also possible for them to be born with not fully formed sexual organs, or organs that do not fall within one or the other spectra.
@Ginungagap That's more accurately known as intersex.
Transgender, by definition, is to be born with your gender not matching your sex. In either case, the GENDER of a trans person is still male or female, regardless of whether they were born intersex or not. My point is that saying "What Bechamel's Gender is? (Male/Female/Transgender)" is incorrect because it implies a transgender person is neither male or female. That's wrong. I know that is wrong.

@Iron: I used to think Envy was a she, the voice and hair seemed to imply it.
Then I noted it's nature, and the fact it was flat, so I regarded it as a 'he'.
Watching the anime, Envy is a 'he', cuz he's jealous of Ed being the 'new fav son' or something.
I liked Brotherhood better. It made more sense.
