Ask a Master Gunslinger Anything
Sometimes when the conditions are just right with just a little bit of lag, an alchemer will fire three times in a row. The question is... does it -really- fire 3 times in a row, or is that just the graphics on the client end of things? Can you actually deal 3 shots worth of damage or is one of them just a phantom effect from lag?
I believe that damage is always registered on the server before it shows on the client, so that might help tell the cases apart... but high-level alchemers ricochet so not so easy for advanced players to tell them apart. :O

So I like using the Flourish line of swords and im thinking of getting a gun to complement it. I will most likely have 2 weapon slots. Should I get a gun that covers the weaknesses of the flourish or just get an all around gun?
so since you use the nameless set to gain 4 values of UV IAS...
ideally, you could get guns with IAS maximum
and then other armor, since you have no need for additional IAS
when are you going to do that? O:<
that would be truly epic,
and if you do ever do that, what armor, shield, and what UVs would you go for?
and do you have a 4th wep slot? is it a valiance..?

@ColdCrime
Weapon UVs can only go up to UV Very High, a Maximum IAS gun is impossible (unless there is some sort of glitch) so you would need to wear something nameless or use the papershield-swiftstrike.
The shield would probably be the same as it is, since it doesn't effect his gun speed, and I believe he said before once he gets a Medium IAS Magnus he will probably put the 4th slot for the Iron Slug.
As for one of the armor the best would be a Grey Feather/Volcanic Salamander/Shadowsun (in that order from best to least favorable). Reason being that you will want that Elemental Defense along with a fire resistance, the extra slime damage Isn't that important, but much better than other choices. Shadowsun is a pretty bad armor in general, the low damage bonus is definitely not worth the loss in resistances and not having elemental defense. Poison and Curse aren't the worst of fears as a gunslinger, but fire resistance is almost mandatory in Firestorm Citadel or Vanaduke.
Basic question:
How can I not suck as a gunslinger? I've been trying to save up for gunslinger gear, kind of unsuccessfully, for the past few days and I can't seem to do well.
I come across soooooooooo many beasts and gremlins that laugh at my pathetic attempts to damage with my alchemer and I break my OWN freeze attempts accidentally, when my allies aren't doing it because they either don't care or don't pay enough attention.
So many enemies dodge my attacks easily, while not trying to avoid swords/bombs...
There's no tier t2 armor I want so I die rather quickly with low defense.
I tried the autogun to do some damage but it removes the advantages I get from using a gun in the first place.
A lot of the time areas are too cramped, so I can't maneuver or shoot well, so gun-users end up sucking...
What should I do?
You need to carry more than one damage type. Any two of shadow, elemental, piercing will mean you have an answer to any resistance. An extra slot and all three damage types and you are -always- doing bonus damage (which almost catches you up to the normal damage swords, but not quite.) Of course, it takes two extra slots to have 3 guns -and- a sword to fall back on.
I usually run sword + umbra driver + hail driver, which gives me special damage against a lot of enemies I want to shoot, and my sword for, well, when I don't think shooting is the best policy.
Blaster. I'm not joking. By shooting twice then pausing before shooting twice again, you'll be able to keep up a constant stream of decently powerful shots. By upgrading to the Valiance, you'll be able to tangle with pretty much anything. It is the king of kiting (pulling enemies and taking shots at them whilst on the move) and it will have some good knockback.
People will call it a generic gun but I've killed everything with it, from jellies to Vanaduke. You want effects? Pack a bomb. You want damage? Get a sword. To me, being a gunner ain't about either. In a team, the gunslinger is most useful for drawing aggro then kiting the enemies whilst the sword swingers lay into them from behind or the sides. Of course, it's also useful to snipe healers.
Have a problem with enemies dodging? Wait for them to attack then back away and take your shots. Alternatively, miss on purpose to control their movements and get them in a corner. Get them into a corner and they will die fast. This however takes a great amount of skill to do, but it is a skill worth mastering.
Being able to deal damage from a distance is the gun's greatest strength. It's not about trying to out damage your team mates. It's about being able to do damage at all, so when the sword swingers drop their shields and get close enough to land a hit, they can kill the enemies in one or two less hits. With that said, never get too close to the enemies. If they get close, run (it's faster to run when you're not shielding or shooting). If they're TOO close, shield. Simple.
Last of all, a gunslinger will survive. Only remember 2 things, 1) AIM and choose your targets. This would basically mean target healers, nearest enemy, the one that the rest of the team is trying to kill or isolated enemies. Depends on the situations. 2) NEVER get cornered. The shield can be used to push enemies away as well as blocking attacks. Remember that. Best strategy though is to run. Just run.
As already mentioned, get the Blaster. It will never fail you. It doesn't hurt to pack a secondary weapon though. My main choice is the Venom Veiler, because sometimes it's just easier to poison the enemies then shoot them down instead of sniping healers. But, I would also suggest the Callahan to deal with the enemies that are most troublesome, Wolvers and Fiends. Everything else is Valiance fodder. Don't forget to shoot twice then pause before shooting twice again, to maintain a constant rate of fire and avoid reloading.
Another interesting thing to note. Gunslingers are the most able to solo, simply because of being able to kite the enemy. I've been through countless arenas and I rarely ever die (one of the reasons why I like em so much).
Before I forget, NEVER, EVER get the autogun!!! I'm not saying they're useless but they WILL strip you of every advantage of being a gunner.
aim for the Gunslinger set then upgrade to Nameless set. honestly, you shouldn't be getting hit in the first place but if you do, the Owlite shield's got you covered.
So why Nameless over the Justifier set? I thought that they made Elemental damage much less frequent and piercing much more common...
coz there's still a lot of things that do elemental. for each monster type, there's at least one monster capable of dealing elemental damage. flamethrower gremlins, ash tail wolvers, retrodes, oilers, most devilites, most zombies, etc. the Justifier set would be absolutely dandy if it weren't for the fact that only Jellies and Wolvers do piercing.
Good to see all the tips.
As a primarily sword user I'm looking for a good complimentary gun that won't cause problems (fire-oilers, shock-silvers, etc). Seems like the Hail Driver/Cryo line will be a solid support gun. Already up to the Cryotech Mk2 and enjoying it so far. Crowd control, damage, reflecting shots, all good so far.
Might add a Shadowtech down the line someday for those enemies strong against elemental. But we'll see.
When I was working on a few guns I used the Cryotech mostly to complement the swords. It freezes enemies even if they have an immunity and I think they actually take the same damage when they pop from the ice but I don't know. Soloing is the best place for keeping them frozen, for the most part.
Me, being the kind of person I am, am not using any specialized gear. Meaning: My 1* set is going to be the Spiral Scale set. I have the Super Stun Gun atm and I'm going to either get the Bolted Blade or the Heavy Hatchet for my sword. So, my question is: What is the best all-around 2* gun?

@Stock:
There is a difference between immunity to freeze and resistance to elemental damage. If a monster is immune to freeze, it can't be frozen. Except for Frostifurs, Beasts and Gremlins can be frozen despite being resistant to elemental damage. Monsters do take a decent amount of damage if they naturally thaw from the ice.
Just because a monster is immune to freeze doesn't negate weaknesses to elemental damage. The Cryotech series will still apply weakness damage against Brumabots, Cryo Knights, Silversaps, Sleetrodes, Slush Puppies, and Frozen Shamblers.
Bah I always forget that, kind of link them together. All the same, having a freeze ability will often aid you, even if the monster has the resistance to the elemental damage. Freeze resist clearly keeps them from being frozen in the first place.
Question 1: Well then, perhaps you can tell me how effective your gunslinging is besides the obvious?
I mean, I always use the the standard sword-gun combination, but there was a time I tried to use a two-gun combo. But I realized that was tedious, but you gotta admit the Pummel Gun and Proto Gun combo was effective, having to switch from a quick moving gun for fast moving enemies, and a strong one for long range and slow enemies.
Question 2: What two-gun combo do you recommend?
What's a recommended UV to get for a hail driver and the nameless set? Also, I'm still pretty new to this UV stuff, so I was wondering when and how should I go about getting these UVs? Like, how much money should I have to start UV crafting and do I do it by buying the first stage recipe (ex cryo alc.), and crafting a bunch until I get it? Thanks. :P
Is there ever a reason to get one of the Antigua series' guns? I have spare tokens from heat farming and was wondering if the weapons were worth a damn, or if I should just go for another sealed sword instead. Currently use a Cryo and Volt driver.

Would you throw in a sword into your 4 slots? Just in case?
I play in a party, I'm the only gunslinger, the rest use swords. As far as I can tell, using a gun in this situation offers absolutely no advantage. My gun's critical damage is still lower than a sword's normal damage, and the sword I tested with was a star lower than the gun. The fact that gun damage per shot is about half of sword damage per swing, coupled with the fact that a lot of guns are only 2-shots, don't seem to have especially good range, and are dodged by a number of enemies, seems to render guns useless when rolling with a party. Even if guns tend to do pure damage while swords do mixed damage, sword damage still seems to win out every time. I would really love to remain as a gunslinger in the party, but it just seems like a waste of time. Is there something I'm missing here?
(I'm using the Gunslinger set and my primary gun is a Voltech Alchemer Mk II)

@Garnavis Dont worry alchemer are pretty awfull in 2* and *3, in *4 its when alchemers works, remember you want a alchemer for the ricochets.
now for pure damage get a autogun (blitz nedlee or pepper), polaris, biohazard
Does the ASI bonus from a Vog Set apply to gun speed increase?
No. If you look at the icon next to the ASI UV on Vog, you'll notice it is a sword. Vog's speed buff works on swords only. If you want a speed increase for guns, you need to look the Gunslinger gear- 3*, 4*, and 5* in Justifier or Nameless. The other way is to use a Swiftstrike Buckler, which boosts ASI for -all- weapons.
What 2 guns should I use for general use in T2? I only do groups, and never solo. I only use 2 weapon slots total, and only want to use guns.

First a little bit about myself and my equipment. I’ve been playing this game for about a month and a half now and not once have I felt the need to buy or wild a sword “Ask any of the guild member I’m with =D” I’m wielding 5 star amour (nameless set) and 4 weapon slot each with a specific type of gun designed to do maximum damage agent certain type of mobs. I In fact own seven 5 star weapons but I want go into why I have those as there used for Lockdown mostly.
Here is my gun line up I use for all tear 2 and 3 runs
Hail driver = elemental damage + freezes mobs on the spots
Callahan =piercing + Knock wolfs and gremlins to the floor interrupting them
Polaris = elemental damage + Knock back
Umbra Driver = Shadow damage
As you can see with this 4 gun line-up I have all 4 types covered and have no need for a sword at all.
The reason i wear the nameless set is because it simply is the best armor for gunslinger the increases bullet speeds dose help a lot I’m also wielding two Elite Trueshot Module the extra damage really is noticeable. My shield is a Grey Owlite Shield element def and resistance to fire and shock is a great help.
There are 2 rules I swear by to be a good gunslinger.
Rule one
Never stay still Never! You should never be stationary all ways moving from left to right kiting and firing together, shielding when needed do this well and you will all most never get hit. What you should never do is charge head first into a group of enemy you’re not a sword wilder so don’t act like one doing this will just get you surrounded and pined, ending in death. To many time i have seen someone wielding a gun standing right in front of a group of mobs shooting like a mad thing trying to kill them before they hit back, 9 time’s out of 10 you’re going to get hit or worse killed.
Rule two
Pick your target don’t just spam bullets into a group hoping the sear amount of fire power your laying into the mobs will eventually kill them. What you want to do instead is change to the appropriate gun then pick out your target and kill it. Then pick another target and repeat the process this way you’re going to get rid of those annoying mob that really can cause a part some trouble like turrets or healers
Picking out targets is the biggest and most important job of a gunslinger so kill those healers fast.

I'm new to the game, but gunning seems to suit my style. I like being mobile and harder to hit.
I'm trying to plan ahead more, so I don't waste any more of my precious energy or even crowns in the wrong place. I want to go 3 guns, 1 sword or 4 guns (if possible, I don't like the idea of being swamped with no way out). For each specialized damage choice, there seems to be two guns to choose from, and this thread hardly covers the second option, so I just want to ask what more experienced folks think.
Storm Driver vs Polaris
Umbra Driver vs Biohazard
Callahan vs Blitz Needle
In addition to this, I'd use a Hail Driver as the 4th gun if viable, or a sword. Which swords do gunners use as a last ditch escape when swamped with enemies?

has anyone here used both polaris and supernova?
i have a polaris but would like to know if there are any special qualities that make supernova desirable.

@ Rodez
Storm Driver vs Polaris
Pretty standard argument fare would push the Polaris as the slight winner. The Polaris is a great gun to use to kite when you're soloing, but if you find yourself in a PUG or adventuring with guildies, it's probably best to stay away from this line. It requires some skill to pick enemies off without ricocheting enemies into your party members faces. That said, I personally run with a Storm Driver. The Polaris bullets travel too slow to be of any real use during party situations and I find that you have to distance yourself quite a ways away from the enemy for full damage. With three other members likely hacking away at enemies, you'll find yourself rarely contributing to the party. I have found that the Polaris really shines in dangerous situations where nobody wants to rush in or everyone is dead.
Umbra Driver vs Biohazard
I don't own any of these guns, but based off of my opinion of gun mechanics, I would choose Umbra over Biohazard. Unless you find yourself soloing often, the charge on the Biohazard just doesn't quite clock the same utility as the Umbra Driver, three shots or not and it also has the same bullet speed issue as the Polaris. Also note, Gremlins dodge in higher tiers lowering the effectiveness of the Biohazard. Someone can prove me wrong, I'd love to see it used effectively in parties.
Callahan vs Blitz Needle
Callahan hands down for the majority of situations. Unless you're strictly running FSC and Vanaduke is your play pal pinata, the Callahan will outstrip the Blitz needle in terms of overall use. Simply put, the Fiends and Beast lines (of which both of these guns are effective against) dodge the majority of ranged attacks with the exception of the Magnus line. You could corner mobs and then blast away, but in party situations this scenario is rarely going to happen and is just plain tedious. Also the Callahan adds the Stun status effect which is quite nice when kiting, although you will have to note that shooting these guns lowers your mobility to...zero. I also found that it's harder to land all the shots from the Blitz Needle because of the bullet spread unless you're in point blank range or unless you're fighting said baddie above.
If you're a gunner traipsing as a swordie, I'd go with the Leviathan or Divine Avenger. The charges are perfect for mobbed situations.

@ origo
biohazard is actually pretty decent against dodge.
they only dodge once and they do it long before the bullet hits their invulnerability.
when they become vulnerable again, the bullet catches up and hits them.
i still prefer umbra though.
the ricochet lets it do a lot of damage quickly.

@ Rodez if you want to wield 4 guns then there is no need for any other gun but these.
Hail driver = elemental damage + freezes mobs on the spots.
use on Construct Family and Undead Family
Callahan =piercing + Knock's wolfs and gremlins to the floor interrupting there attacks.
use on Beast Family and Fiend Family also work great for Gremlin Family
Polaris = elemental damage + Knock back.
use on Construct Family and Undead Family
Umbra Driver = Shadow damage.
use on Gremlin Family and Slime Family

Hello everyone.
Im tired of beign Swordsman, tired of Divine Avenger, Vog Cub etc.
So im changing my class to Gunslinger.
After reading guide at Spiralwiki and this thread i made my future build, so guys check this out and suggest me something or tell me whats wrong:
Nameless Hat
Justifier Jacket
Hail Driver (asi med)
Umbra Driver (asi med)
Blitz Needle
Volcanic Plate Shield (for Vanaduke runs)
2x Elite Trueshot Module
Help me don't make mistake, guys :)
Sry for bad english.

I wouldnt get Volcanic plate shield for a gunner. I would choose Gray Owlite Shield since it does have Max fire for FSC runs + its has element def which is pretty good against tower and PVP (if they did the pvp with your own shield) because a lot of pplz got element weapons

@ Origo & Lestatshadow:
Thanks for the advice. I bought a Magnus a couple days ago and I'm loving it! Picking the right gates (beast and fire strata) I was able to solo the bottom half of tier 2 when the rest of the PUG left. The knock interruption the Magnus provides on the devils and wolves is a godsend when they normally dodge all other shots. It was actually kiting undead in the graveyard and slimes with my Voltech that proved time consuming, but shock is effective.

which is better Argent Peacemaker or Sentenza? i am currently using a faust as my main weapon and my killowatt pulsar as my gun.

ummm nevermind my post. wow. that took a long time too i explained how nova driver is so much better than the status ones and why you should get supernova instead of polaris if you dont do vana / want a much better reliable utility gun. Personally id do both polaris is sweet for soloing vana stratum with needle while supernova is all around better
a tiny bit of necroing but you can go to the ask another master gunslinger thread its fairly active.
I need help on which Antigua line to get... If i get Argent, it would help me with any fast undead like spookats. But if i get Sentenza, it could help with killing fast Gremlins? I dont know which one to get. Is Sentenza really needed for killing gremlins? or is Biohazard fine? If i get Argent it would probably be for people who hate Pulsars, so i would use Argent instead. I really need help to decide.
Thanks in advance.

Wow nice to see this thread again Imma go thru and read every post of outdated info!
If your main concern is gremlins and gremlins alone, might I suggest the Umbra Driver (which can one shot a T3 gremlin) or even just using Blitz Needle which will one shot a T3 gremlin mender, shield and all.
Sentenza works really nice for gremlins but I often find myself wishing I had my Blitz Needle when there are 2 or more gremlin menders working together as they often rez eachother unless you burn both their shields before you even attempt a kill.
AP on the other hand in my humble opinion is the bar none best elemental gun available, and yes people will love you for not useing Polaris.
Also note, this thread is chock full of outdated information so please let it die. There is a more recent gunner thread, and even that one is showing its age at this point.

"Tell Eury to remove it from the Useful Links For New Knights"
Thats just the thing, this thread pre-dates Dirty Harry's < master Gunslinger > thread in the Arsenal section and with all the patching thats gone on a lot of the information is now wrong and certainly not useful to new knights.
~Luke

Should we start yet another one? Or wait until the Iron Slug patch to be sure we'll be done with the gun buffs for a while?

Maby Rawrcake might be interested in using that extensive guide he wrote not too long ago as a template with some edits to kick it off. That would serve to field a lot of unnecessary questions. Though from my experience with several forums for different games 88.8% of people never read them and proceed to post their question anyhow.
You Rangerwill and Rawrcake and a few other slingers that I cant think of off of hand have been around the game longer then I have, and I dont participate in lockdown which is a certainly a detraction of sorts to me qualifying as a "master gunslinger". I think these guys or you should have the honor of starting the new thread.
Or wait until the Iron Slug patch
This might be a good idea, I wouldnt be suprised to see blitz needle get hit by the nerf bat between then and now too.
~Luke

I've been a gunner for a time now but for some weird reason I've never had a normal gun. My equipment is now:
Shadowsun stetson + duster
Swiftstrike buckler
Elite trueshot module
Blitz
polaris
sentenza
Now I crafted a Magnus to make Iron slug but the magnus had 2 UVs: ASI med and CTR low.
The question is, should I make it to callahan instead to get another piercing gun or is blitz good enouhg for piercing and hope for an Iron slug patch?

@Nubbis:
In my somewhat non-professional opinion, Blitz is difficult to use as a main piercing gun if you value timeliness. I'd go for a Callahan. Perhaps I'm wrong on my damage mechanics, but if you have a gun for each damage type [elemental/shadow/piercing], that should still outweigh any need for a normal-damage gun. Plus, as far as normal-damage guns are concerned, I'm personally inclined towards Valiance.
@cutebunnys: CTR is always the way to go for alchemers. <3
@Lestatshadow: I contend your recommendation for Hail over say, Volt, Magma, or Nova. The freeze status is useful when soloing, but in parties [particularly with swordies] it tends to be rather useless. I like Nova, since it kills things faster. Seriously.
Also, Polaris can be a difficult gun to use in parties. I say this because most people don't solo all the time; playing with others is a Thing That Happens.
Yeah, we've gone through at least two of these threads now. Who's next?

If we're seriously in dire need of a Gunslinger thread, I can continue answering. I've been busy lately so I haven't been going on very often at all. Also since other people on my thread have been very kind and helpful to shine their wisdom upon the questions, I didn't really feel the need to have to respond myself. If anything, just turn my old thread into a "ask and get answered" thread by any and all gunslingers. I'm not just saying that so I can keep my old thread alive, but from personal experience starting a new Master Gunslinger thread will cause you to re-answer a lot of questions that you kind of wished people would have just read the old ones, where the answer lies in full detail.
I, being a free player, only have 2 weapon spots, and I am also not going all gunner. Which leaves me wiht 1 slot for a sword, and 1 slot for a gun, and have decided to keep this format for the extra challenge it gives!
So this leaves me with my question, what is an all around good gun that does not-horrid damage to most enemy types? I am currently using a cryotech alchemer mk II, which I definitely love (freeze gun puppies, FREEZE!), but I have died waaaay too many times while fighting gremlins or wolvers from only doing about 5 damage against them.
I currently have set my eye on the antigua (I would go with the silversix, because I still do like doing elemental damage), and have also seen that the blaster is a very good basic damage gun, but are there any other guns that would work well against most damage types?
Thanks!
