Can you get your stuff back if someone hacked your account and the GMs trace him and his ALTs?

June 6 2012, 6 PM...

Since I entered Senior High School, my schedule got busier and there are times that I have to time to do my daily prestige mission so I trusted my some of my friends and shared my account details to them. I know that it was probably my mistake for doing this but I still wish that the GMs will not ignore this and bring justice...
I logged in and my trusted friend [redacted] immediately told me that someone hacked my account and that my collection of Rose Regalia Sets (Yes Orginal Colors included) are gone. I checked and saw that it was true. And not only that, I saw that my Final Flourish ASI High, Gran Faust ASI High and Skolver Coat Shock Max and Normal Low are also gone... I did not panic, I calmly checked my account CE history and saw that a knight named Brotherofvanduke sent me 8000CE via mail, and above that I saw that the CE was used to unbind 2 of my stolen 5* items. I also saw that more than 100,000 crowns were traded for CE to unbind another 5* item. I taught of testing [redacted] first and told him that I saw his name instead of Brotherofvanduke, as the one who mailed me the 8000CE. He panicked and told me it was only a joke and he returned the Gran Faust then the Skolver Coat, I asked for the whereabouts of my missing Final Flourish and Rose Regalia sets and he told me this time he really swears he did not take them. But I saw him equipping a Final Flourish ASI high! He told me he bought them from a knight named Dark*** who is my friend. Well of course how can I trust him after seeing him waste 16,000CE for nothing. I asked for his account details to check his inventory or CE history (Because I also wanted to check if he really did make the deal with Dark***) but he refused so badly that I started getting mad and started threatening him... Then I saw him started to unbind a lot of stuffs including a Snarbolax Set, so I told him it is useless because I know that the GMs will trace his new account and ban that account as well. Guess what, he told me "I can try". Well thats enough proof that he is taking my stuff worth more than 100,000 CE, I worked hard for those... hundreds of hours grinding through FSC runs... As a last resort I told him to give me the Final Flourish and I will forgive him and forget everything but he ran off to a different Haven... Well I was sad because he was one of my good friends in SK, and I am also sad that something like this actually happened in a game I play to have fun I got deep sadness instead...

As I said earlier, some of you might say that it was all my fault for sharing my account details, but I atleast wanted share this as a warning to others in order to avoid other knights in suffering my fate, and also to justify the things that [redacted] did.

PS
I know you can`t shame other peoples name here, but I am really sorry I can`t obey that this time..

Edit: I just confirmed that my friend Dark*** did not sell any Final Flourish to [redacted]...

Edit: Oh no... He also took some of my accessories...
Right now I confirmed 2 missing Divine Valkyrie Wings and 1 Divine Helm Guards...

I remember seeing him earlier on his regular account randomly joining me saying he had to level something. I do not know what it was. I think now after reading this post it was probably that final flourish or one of the other weapons. Just a thought.

So, uh, why didn't you send this in via support? You'd get a responce from a GM there, with full discretion.

They could track everything, yes, but that requires work. Most MMOs don't bother with it since they'd be servicing a zillion people, but for a small-time game they might oblige. Might. Mind you, that assumes item trades are tracked. You might only get your ce back.

Least you now know to trust no one you can't strangle irl. Least then you can torch their car. :v

Another interesting bit of

Another interesting bit of info, if you have an F2P account and somebody hacks it and changes the password, you've lost your account forever.
They don't try to recover accounts without billing information.

My advice? If you know him in real life beat him with a tire iron until CE comes out.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's sad to see that someone you put such faith in could turn around and stab you in the back like that.

I know I wouldn't do that, but it saddens me that there are those that do.

I don't know what the GMs will do to be honest. Yes, it was your mistake to give out your details, but I can't be certain about how they will react to this.

@Guy: I'm pretty sure they can monitor all transactions. I've had a encounter of two of my own, and have asked the GMs to look into my history before. CE, cr and materials can be traced for sure, so likely gear too.

@Psycho
Hm. Interesting. That still leaves the issue of requiring the GMs to do specialized work. Fixing broken parties or teleing players back into bounds is simple to do. Tracing transactions and things like that requires actual thought. I assume it's time consuming, and advertising that they offer such a service means that most GM requests of that nature would be people trying to scam the system or undo unfavorable but legit trades (solved by making it a bannable offence to abuse, but we'll ignore that).

Still, if your bank account is robbed by an associate, you could bring the guy to court for recompense (i.e, have OOO act as arbiters in this case). But in games, the dev just tells you to go to hell. Wonderful customer service, that.

@Whitelancer
Oh. That explains why you didn't use it. Try opening the page in a different browser then. If Shoebox is to be believed (previous experiences of mine indicate they are), then you can take heart that at the very least, this guy won't profit. Oh, and you got to keep your coat and GF.

In theory it should not be difficult to trace the transfer of stolen items. Assuming the game keeps logs of relevant activities, all that would need to be done is match up the time of transaction where Whitelancer's gear was suspiciously either mailed or traded for nothing in return, and the IP used at the time. The IP address would be out of the ordinary from what Whitelancer normally logs on from, and assuming a proxy wasn't used, would match the IP of the perpetrator's alt account he used as a mule.

However, it may just be policy not to recover stolen items in situations where a password was given out, rather than legitimate hacking.

Ya I'm sorry you had to learn it this way but never share your account info with others. Like shoebox said if they know that info that means they are friends who are close enough for me to go and deal with the situation using a tire iron.

But just like real life some people don't have strong moral standards, they figure just cause they can get away with it, they can do whatever.

You gave a Random Stranger Online, not someone you know in Real Life, your Account Password, ask them to Do Prestige Missions to Raise your Prestige, which do ab-so-fudging-lutly NOTHING Besides give you a Small Symbol next ot your name & Bragging Rights. And you Expect them not to Touch ANYTHING In your Arsenal?

Obligatory TOS copy-paste

" It is forbidden to share passwords or accounts, grant someone else access to your account or access another knight's account. You are responsible for the security of your account data "

Technically, they could even ban you for sharing your password instead of giving your stuff back :S

Wait a minute

You gave out your password so you could get DAILY PRESTIGE MISSIONS? Don't those do absolutely nothing?

You're basically saying "I know I broke a huge rule, but please solve my problems anyway.", and you called someone suspicious for not giving you their account details? Let's also review what hacking isn't. It's not giving your account info to someone, having it run wild, and then getting screwed because of it. That's called making a foolish mistake that was supposed to never happen, thanks to the rules in play.

Things to learn from

Things to learn from Whitelancer's experience:

- If you have precious items that are easily stolen, store them on an alt with a different password
- Try to find time in a 24 hour window to so a 10 minute run, it can even be faster if you speed run.
- Only share passwords with IRL friends, if you MUST at all.
- People are selfish

This reminds me of a forum post for a different mmorpg showing how to scam. One of them was a multi-month scam where you gain the trust of everyone, and then privately ask everyone (or most) for a loan for something expensive. Obviously the scam is that you leave the guild with their stuff.

----
On a different note, I feel bad because your scammer sold me something saying he desperately needed CE. ><

---Long Post Ahead

"As I said earlier, some of you might say that it was all my fault for sharing my account details, but I atleast wanted share this as a warning to others in order to avoid other knights in suffering my fate..."

I don't think it takes much more than common sense to keep your account information to yourself. As Juances stated from the TOS in his post, It is absolutely forbidden to share any account information. The folks up at OOO don't write the TOS for the hell of it, they do it for the safety of you and the community. By deliberately breaking them, you should be fully aware that the consequences from this are almost certain to lead to an unfortunate event for SOMEONE at SOME point in time, in this case it was yourself. Any knight who listens to the most basic and obvious rules doesn't even have to read this story.

"I am also sad that something like this actually happened in a game I play to have fun I got deep sadness instead..."

I'm surprised that you seem to have not even thought this could've happen at all. Sadness is expected to come to those who break the rules established by the creators, especially the most basic rules. You play this game to have fun, and you should therefore abide by the rules. You didn't, and you got sadness in return. What was given was according to what you have done.

"...there are times that I have to time to do my daily prestige mission so I trusted my some of my friends and shared my account details to them."

Truly this is the thing that shows the lack so much common sense. You broke the TOS and gave your entire account away for a firetrucking NUMBER. You don't HAVE to do your daily prestige mission. You HAVE to breathe to stay alive, You HAVE to wake up in the morning to get to places on time, but You don't HAVE to use 10 minutes of your life to increase a minor statistic. And you didn't trust any of your "friends," you trusted a mask someone puts on in a MMORPG. Looking at it like that, it looks like a truly foolish mistake. All for nothing bu a number.

I too trust OOO will bring justice to the situation, but that isn't what you really want. What you want is MERCY, which OOO can give to no knight...

WOW

Shoebox, please don't espouse things as truth that are not necessarily.

I know that pawn was scammed a few times of CE, fairly large chunks but nothing of this magnitude. He put in support tickets, and obviously there was a CE history to prove the occurrence. In pawn's case, there were also screen shots of the knight admitting it (altho those could potentially be doctored via photo shop, but they weren't in pawn's case). At any rate, the offender got permabanned and pawn's stolen CE was returned.

Last night [redacted] was equipped to all the items you just listed, and bragging that he had rolled them with a few rolls each.

Obviously, you shouldn't have shared your account info, especially given the amazing collection and wealth you had acquired, but thats irrelevant. The ToS is designed to provide rules to govern how we play and what we do, to protect us from both ourselves and others. I understand this. However, it hurts triple not at all to roll back and put Whitelancer in the position he was in before this happened. Whereas if they just point to ToS it avails them nothing and hurts Whitelancer mortally. He/she has supported OOO with 100s of hours if not days of gameplay. He/she has invested an amazing portion of their time and thus their life towards the game.

Clearly, the offender(s) should be banished, their action tracked and any subsequent toons they create banned as well. No item scammed off of Whitelancer should be allowed to remain with this terrible person. Furthermore, Whitelancer should have his/her position restored as much as possible. As i stated, it affects OOO in no way to help Whitelancer by helping to restore him/her. But to not do so, is a mortal wound.

FULL DISCLOSURE

Whitelancer,

I feel for you. I can only imagine how heartbreaking and stressful this must be. For the sake of full-disclosure, I want to say that i fear I am in possessioin of stolen merchandise :( and am putting in a support ticket to the cause. Last night, at about 2am central tiime (11pm my time) [redacted] takled me into trading my prism wolver tail for a Red Chap, and my Divine wolver tail for 1.2m + unclean aura. At the time of transaction, i had no knowledge of your losses, and thus no reason to be skeptical of his trade offers. Also, this is when he was bragging to me of his great luck in rolling asi high on all teh same weapons you had turn up missing. --after reading this thread today, i told hiim how disappointed i was in him, and he swears that he bought the chap off the AH. I find it hard to believe. He also tried to trade a red tabard for my divine tail (i said no then he made the other deal). Moments after the trade a red tabard appeared in the auction house. I suspect the same one.

I am putting in a support ticket linking this thread, explaining the situation and asking that if OOO's investigation proves that this knight has thieved your account, that they restore my my items and crowns and i can restore you yours (perhaps we can meet with a GM present....or however they wish to work it out, idk).

I don't know if they are going to get involved, or what they can and cannot prove. I am letting this reside in thier hands, as they are the only ones with full transparency of all that has occured. However, in the event that they take no action whatsoever, then i kindly offer to trade you these items back for what i gave for them.

red chap = prism tail
unclean + 1.2m = divine tail.

Its the best i can do. As i cannot just eat the loss, since the inital mistake was on your end for sharing account info. But I can at least offer you the refund of these trades, wherethe red chap+unclean aura + 1.2m is of more value than the two tails. I imagine that your support ticket will be in limbo for quite some time before we know whats going on. I'll not sell off any of these potentially ill-gotten gains until we have had a chance to talk about it.

Sincerely,

An empathetic Rommy
