I'm pretty sure the reason that OCH was made to be purchasable with real money and not CE was because they wanted it to be a DLC (or something similar) for Steam, which from what I gather requires a real money purchase. The reason for that was to get more hits in the search bar when people looked for Spiral Knights. Seeing as the Asian servers are essentially a 'separate' game and don't appear on the Steam website, I assume GameCyber has no legal requirements (or otherwise) to make it purchasable with real money only.

In other words, don't get your hopes up.

PS: Please correct me if you can play the Asian servers via Steam.

Uh Oh, but someone is

Uh Oh, but someone is forgotting that there are SPIRAL KNIGHTS beside steam client. Just because of steam all players from Kongregate and OOFICIAL Spiral Knights site were FORCED to pay only real money for OCH?

If Steam FORCED ooo in some way to make OCH as DLC why Official site client wasnt able to purchase OCH with CE (there is no STEAM conflict on official site client, and steam has steam trade, so enabling OCH as CE buy for official site client was fair option). This is the question OOO will never answer...

I didn't take a possible

I didn't take a possible problem with the implementation using the Steam APIs in consideration. All players should be able to buy DLC with CE, including Steam players. How do those people redeem the DLC on Steam? Is there no API to communicate purchases ingame to Steam?

Off the top of my head I could think of two possible solutions to this problem:

  • For Steam players, instead of unlocking the expansion directly in the client, provide a key that can be redeemed on Steam. This could lead to further trading outside the system which might or might not be a problem (maybe the keys could be made non-transferable.)
  • Don't sell DLC for a fixed CE value but enable players to trade DLC in game. This would have to be implemented only for non-Steam players, otherwise the first solution (or any other pertaining to the specific problem of DLC ownership in Steam) might be necessary as well.

Steam trading should not be an alternative to buying content with CE. It should be an additional option for Steam players, even if it's not possible for others. As we don't want to be denied a part of this game for not being on Steam, we don't need to deny them functionality provided by their platform of choice.

Still, an official statement would be appreciated, especially as to why exactly such a feature is not possible or if there's hope for us (probably with a rough ETA.) Perceived preference of a particular platform potentially leads to a schism in the community which arguably brings no benefit to anyone concerned (maybe with the exception of Steam which gains users that otherwise might have abstained.)

They should make it for CE

They should make it for CE only for non-steam players.

"They should make it for CE only for non-steam players."

Bad idea. Why? Steam players would make a Snipe dropping storm about not being able to get DLC/E-passes with CE too.

And these forums already have more than enough rage and QQ about other stuff. (i.e: CE Prices, RSS changes, and maybe other things I haven't tumbled upon yet :p)

Cause steam does not work

Cause steam does not work properly for me with this game and that makes me grumpy. Also, because steam gets voice chat and I don't, and that also makes me grumpy.

As someone who believes in sharing, I wish to share my grumpiness.

My theory

OOO wants everyone in NA and EU to migrate to Steam. This way, when an account got hacked, they could also look at Steam log and see what happened.

There are Pros and Cons. Pros are that a lot of the security features are built into Steam, so SK doesn't have to redo everything. And as a bonus, you can also trade items across Steam games. Cons are that if Steam goes down, so does people who play SK on Steam. (And I believe you can't start two accounts at the same time via Steam too.)

Well, if it's Steam that makes you laggy then go complain on the Steam forums instead. I dunno if OOO can help you with that :s

I'd understand if OOO were

I'd understand if OOO were working towards migrating all players to Steam. It'd cause me to abandon the game altogether but I could understand such a move. I don't think they're working on it at the moment though. Only a few weeks ago SK launched on Armorgames as well. I doubt they'd actively look for publishers if they intended a move such as this and I doubt they could actually pull it off without losing a significant number of players. There's just not much to gain by reducing the amount of potential customers no matter the technological advantages. I can't stress enough that not all people are able (or willing) to use Steam (for obvious and less obvious reasons.)

Yet another reason for OOO to stop alienating non-Steam players by denying those people content available for "free" on Steam. A solution agreeable to most (you can never satisfy everyone) players should have been implemented before any DLC was launched. Not wanting to cry over spilled milk I'd rather urge the developers (and perhaps distinguished and experienced players) to come up with a solution to this particular nuisance.

While you can get here from

While you can get here from Armorgames (if you look hard enough) it seems no access to the forums or support system is intended for those players. Excluding these players is a problem in and of itself which shouldn't be underestimated. Still, the mere fact that new publishers are actively sought for (no matter how well they're integrated into the community) gives rise to hope that Steam will not be the only platform available in the future. OOO might want to set our doubts at rest though.

Oh nice, so not only players

Oh nice, so not only players form all those gaming sites (or rather interactive advertisements boards, because thats what they are in fact) dont have access to forum or support portal.

So strange OOO decided to launch game on armorgames while they still have problem with kongregate users not being able to use forums and support portal, same thing happens to fresh armorgame players. OH WAIT, maybe they dont want those players on forums? Less crowdy here, better to control. I wonder why do they still keep forum...

To be honest, kongregate

To be honest, kongregate users not being able to use forums and support without an alt isn't as much of a problem as kongregate users not being able to move their accounts to the more convenient sega or steam clients.

When signing up for the

When signing up for the newsletter ingame, Armorgames users can use the validation email to connect their knights to their account in the usual way. In the same way you can use the email address to request your username, which seems to be "armor:[some_hash_or_id]". Unfortunately you can't use this username to login again, at least it didn't work for my AG account. Still, it seems to be possible to use the accounts on here (if someone finds out how to login with AG credentials). The same might hold true for Kongregate accounts. A separate thread still might be a better idea as the usage or migration of third-party accounts is not relevant to the topic discussed here.

Again, a statement from OOO would be appreciated, especially with the growing awareness of users that expansions are available for CE on Asian servers. There might be a variety of reasons for not implementing this feature here, even though it would be possible from a technical standpoint.

A couple of differences

Yes you can buy a elevator pass and OCH. However that is only with CE in the Asian server. Which is rather good IMO. But what are different about the Asian servers is that:

1. No Buyable packs ie. starter, battle packs and explorer hence no associated green ward and artifacts
2. Guardian Armor packs are not available for purchase
3. NO decent UVed items up for sale
4. Lockdown is only playable at certain times in the day as there aren't many players using it. Numbers are usually 20 or less.
5. CE prices are thru the roof!! (but it is gradually coming down)
6. Very small community. There is only 3 servers running.
7. Some modes haven't been implemented like spectate mode and not even sure if guild update will be there later on.
8. If you don't speak or read chinese you may have to fiddle around alot and trying to translate what others are saying is kinda hard.
9. If you get caught up in a bug good luck trying to contact support in chinese LMAO!!!

2. Guardian Armor packs are not available for purchase
can't bust this yet

3. NO decent UVed items up for sale
well sometimes i can still saw ctr med brandish at AH

4. Lockdown is only playable at certain times in the day as there aren't many players using it. Numbers are usually 20 or less.
time zone matters

5. CE prices are thru the roof!! (but it is gradually coming down)
Taiwan, yes, idk actually since i play hk server only; Hong Kong, 6k Cr/100ce now, with the help of the featured auction promo. jelly?
they packaged the featured auction as part of the construction project on eastern haven, aka "discovery of rare accessories" and "fund raising for spiral order"
http://zh.web.gamecyber.net/gcNewsBlog/?p=8273

6. Very small community. There is only 3 servers running.
meh, we have an active guild for english players btw; and i doubt if you could communicate with the non-english speaking europeans at main server.

7. Some modes haven't been implemented like spectate mode and not even sure if guild update will be there later on.
yes, just a matter of time again. they did have the dark harvest.
spectate mode: still small pvp population and this explains that spectate mode still has flaws: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/64948
guild update? they still show the second phase construction site at eastern haven, but without walking npc

8. If you don't speak or read chinese you may have to fiddle around alot and trying to translate what others are saying is kinda hard.
refer to question six. and i am a local chinese so wfc.

9. If you get caught up in a bug good luck trying to contact support in chinese LMAO!!!
question eight, and i occasionally offer translation services to my guildies.

some Tl;DR answer: matter of the sample size, you can't make direct comparison anyway. main server is old, developed with huge player base; asian server is new, developing with growing number of players and it has potential to grow bigger.

@Forum Chat
What I offered were just some general truths, the only one I didn't get right was my first point which you kindly pointed out. Also as you mentioned they do release updates for the modes but it seems to be much later on. People need to weigh in the pros and cons for playing on the Asian server. I'm sure the game is still developing for the Asian server but whether it will grow or not is still up in the air.

@Enclaven
And I was online yesterday for around 10-12 hours in the Taiwanese server. I will be on the servers testing the latency and lag differences which is why I'm playing on the Asian server.

So what you're saying is that

So what you're saying is that there are further differences and some similarities between the Asian servers and ours. Would you care to elaborate to what extent this pertains to OOO seemingly not wanting to offer such a feature on their servers or at least to give a reason as to why?

This thread is not necessarily about discussing the differences between the servers of different publishers, it's about disclosing the existence of a feature which according to OOO might not be even possible to implement and it's about questioning the rationale behind OOO not even issuing a statement concerning a matter causing quite a bit of resentment in a significant portion of the player base.

The asian servers are attached to an entirely seperate instance of the game. You need to download the Chinese client at http://sk.gamecyber.net/ and start a new character from scratch.
