I think they just fixed it,

I think they just fixed it, the version number changed and I'm getting another update through steam.

EDIT: and thalia's post in the patch notes has been deleted. I'll take that as it's fixed.
DOUBLE EDIT: Definitely confirmed by a friend, the patch is up properly now.

NICE.

I know people are going to complain about the new icons, but I think they're incredible! It's like the best parts of the old versions of Spiral Knights and Torchlight (which itself was rather cartoonish) put together. Gives the weapons a real sense of power to them. Look at the Iron Slug icon, you can just see the projectile exploding.

Oh, and being able to bunny-hop around is fun too ...

Bombs?

Is it just me or something changed with bombs? I can't really tell, but it feels strange using them. Also, if I release bombs before the charge it gives a little screen shake and rubberband now.

Stealth patches

Bombs no longer have a walk speed delay when lifting.

There is now a slight penalty for failing to charge a bomb.

Shufflebot "arena" size in Advanced Training Hall is now increased. Shield Bash them shufflebots!

On topic:

REALLY loving this new stuff, especially the graphics! They are simply amazing.

I love this Modifier key, although it took me some time to figure out. For future reference, here's how to use it: 1. Set modifier key. 2. When selecting a new control you can hold down the modifier key and press something else (such as left click, for example) 3. New function will now be activated when you hold down modifier key and press the selected key.

Reserved till I have the time to try them out in PVE (and perhaps LD)

EDIT: What does Modifier key do? <-solved

Bugs:

Dark Matter Bomb has wrong icon (uses Deadly Crystal Bomb icon)
Drake Scale Helm has wrong icon (uses Dragon Scale Helm icon)

Yep, you made another herp derp update.

It's nice you made that dash & bash thing. But there's long awaited Battle Sprites?

Also, improving UI? You already "improved" it, should it be pointed again? Now those "icons" for armors and weapons looks like it's regulal MMORPG, but surely not like SK. Stop fixing the things that's not even broken.

Oh, and yeah. Last steps you must made. Add skill trees and combat professions, completely separating classes. Also, "fix" Coliseum with those updates. Game was been nice balanced, made it balanced even more. And do PvP more balanced. Like in Ragnarok or World of Warcraft. Peoples surely gonna love it.

Graphics

I've seen the graphics chaging quite a few times, or at least it feels like I've seen it change more than enough now. Having icons with different colors for similar items was really nice. Now, I just can't really understand what's going on with the icons. Please, do a rollback with that thing. I'm great that you're actually adding stuff to gameplay and making it more fun but please keep the game as it is, don't try to change it.

This is a fact, people who have been playing the game for longer are more likely to spend money for new things that you implement than a beginner. If you're trying to get more people to play and risk losing the older, more loyal one, I assure you that it's not worth it. You're gonna make people give bad referance for the game to possible new players, and there already are lots of stuff similar to the new icon thingy you've introduced. I like Puzzle Pirates as well, and seeing Three Rings at the bottom of the page in the login screen was a great referance. I think you can look at that example more and see what would work and what wouldn't.

I'm just trying to help this game survive and become more popular since I really enjoy playing it. No harm meant, so if I said something wrong, please let me know.

+1 Thimol

The icon updates are good, but they completely change the game's style. And they still didn't "fix" the whole UI, the level indicators on friend and guild lists haven't changed.

For LD: I played a good amount of games and I can say dash looks like a definite improvement. No one's figured out how to use it optimally yet, but it already adds a lot and more will come as people figure out how to use it effectively.

For Bash+PvE: Haven't played it yet.

I'll just go into a little more detail here:

the new icons don't help much since at a glance they look much too similar, and this might be a stupid complaint, but in the heat of battle a glance is all you have, and symbols work much better in helping to differentiate between weapons, especially if they're carefully colored unlike the photos which are colored "dark gray" and "slightly less dark gray"

The two moves are quite different. Dash is a quick, evasive move that will get you from A to B in a flash. It moves 6 spaces and you briefly turn invincible during the animation.

Bash is a slow, offensive move that is slower than just running. It moves 5 spaces and offers no invincibility. Instead, it will knock away and stun enemies.

Shield bash and dash made my missions much easier and I can make enemies stun. At least shield bash is not in guardian or in lockdown.

@Flaame: Or minerals.

@Flaame: Or minerals. /sad

And I agree with @Thimol. Maybe you could make the background colors on things indicative of what they are? Like, for weapons, armor, shields, etc, it could be a dark shade of some color, but still easily distinguishable (so no dark blue and dark blue-green), and for items, have the backgrounds more brightly colored, based on what drops them? I dunno, just an idea. /shrug

DnB are pretty good, it'll take me awhile to figure out what keys to map them to that works best for me, but that's not a big deal.

And as cool as the new icons are... I would say that they don't match the overall aesthetic of the game, but that's not true. Not anymore. They match the new, shinier, "grittier" UI better than the old ones did. And I really miss the old style. It was so... simplistic, but detailed, if that makes sense. And fun bright colors! Now it's.... just dark. Nothing new. Just like every other MMO out there. The style of SK is why I started playing in the first place, and now that's it's heading in a direction that's so... generic, I just don't like it as much.

It's not that it's changing, it's that the change is making the game less unique.

@Sroell It's not that it's changing, it's that the change is making the game less unique. Pardon me for being one who does not play many games, but I don't know how this makes the game less unique?

The art style overall is still there; just the UI changed. To be honest I prefer this more than the old one, though coming from someone who plays at a rather high resolution, I'm not one to speak. I have experimented with low resolution; this UI makes the game very hard on low res.

Standard attempts of players

Standard attempts of players to bully the developers with histrionics aside...

I think something like a bash may have become needed by areas where a load of enemies will tend to clump up. Unless your team has some form of very heavy crowd control, this was a teamkiller. Why wouldn't a tea pack such a useful item? Well, why should a team -have- to do so? Certain items being required due to how the game is designed, to the point that's all that anyone uses, has been noted on this forum before. Maybe shield bashing and dashing will help alleviate these issues. A slightly wider variety of viable loadouts would not be a bad thing. As is, there's just certain things I do not bother doing, and laugh at the idea of doing them, simply because of how the AI behaves.

Just spitting in to the wind here is all. That's my take on all this. I'd have to really give the new moves a test drive for a week to see if that's a good conclusion, but this is my initial take.

@Owaoforum

I mean, it's just my opinion. I just feel like the original art style is slowly creeping away, starting with the UI and now with the new look of the mats. I like the new appearance of armor and whatnot in the inventory, but the mats are just ugh. I keep thinking gremlin gizmos and bronze bolts are driftwood. -__-;;;

But, I am playing on the lowest resolution (on a macbook pro, super awesome gaming computer here), and have been since shortly after the UI update, because everything was being very jumpy/mildly laggy, even with a perfect connection. (It was particularly awful on arenas with a full party...) Maybe the new mats look better at a higher resolution?

The update

I know that some/most people don't like the way the materials and our gear look like. While I do agree that it doesn't quite fit the style of Spiral Knights, it isn't totally terrible. It looks nice.A course, I'm just restating what has already been said, but it is true.An option to go back to the way the gear looked before would be cool, but we have asked for that since the new UI.And what happened with that, you all know the answer. The point is, as much as we don't like the way it looks now, we just have to get used to it.We may wish for change, but we might never get it.

Okay, I took a stab at the new stuff, saw how it bled, and, well, I like the bash and dash. Not too sure about the new icons, but okay. The Bomber Mobility Buff (BMB) is a nice change for bombers.

Just one question: was the Dread Venom Striker line nerfed? It feels a bit slower somehow.

I hope this feedback reaches the people working on this game.

Whee, dash and bash is fun! (I feel I should add more here, as it's such a nifty neat new thing. But basically: Wheeeeee! Yeah!)

The promo is another jackpot. Beautiful stuff there. (Again I feel I should add more about the positive parts of this update.) Shiny! Sparkling! Want! :))
(Sadly I'm just one of those players that buy things in-game from the actual real game supporters that pay real money. But hey, someone has to buy their stuff and ce, right?)

Now the not so shiny stuff.

The icons... I know you put work into this but... Please give me back the old ones. [puppy look] Please?

These actually favour a real life headache by having to focus on what exactly it says, where with old icons I could discern stuff at a glance:

Character portrait: I have to hover my mouse over what I have in a weapon slot to find out what some of that stuff is, where before, for example, I could quickly see where I had a gun that I can replace with the new one I want to heat now (never mind knowing which one). Some of these new icons are a true mess of mixed up colour without any way to figure out what it's supposed to be.

Arsenal: I have to read what the text on an item says rather than finding it at a glance by icon and stars.

Arsenal/Recipe list: I have to frown and read what the text or the number says to distinguish, for example, freezig vaporizer and freezing atomizer (or I have to type excessively more than just 'free' into the search field at the top). Before I saw they had so many stars and that was it. (Plus a much friendlier font/colour scheme to verify, if I felt the need.)

Auction house: The new fields take more space, plus it's a pain to discern my own items from the others. It's a pain to read what's there (see old one having friendlier font/colour scheme).

Oh, and please give us back a means to see which weapon we are holding right then. No, it's not always visible in my hand. I'll try to get some screenshots and then edit this with links to them.

On the bottom line, thanks for this nifty new stuff, and I hope you will think about some of the not so nifty (IMO) changes. Thanks for all the work!

Edit:

Sometimes happens when you change weapon while running, as far as I could make out so far. Thus I'm used to looking at the bottom to see what weapon I have after switching, to make sure I switched to the right weapon. (It occurs to me that maybe I should do a bug report, consider it done.)

And no, the wheel doesn't help. That shows more than one weapon, even if it didn't get in the way (or would have to be used and then get distracted from fighting trying to decipher which is the one it switches to).

ok.

tried out dash and bash.
dash is a very useful move, and it will take time to harness. you can avout various attack, including the attacks of greavers. on the downside, with a so long distance that you have to go, it can be used only to avoid single attacks, not a pack of bullets.
bash is a rather slow move, but it serves the propouse: keep the enemies away. unfortunately, even with knockback, you have a good chance to be at the center of an enemy pack. not so good.
the new icons killed me. almost. please, next time, don't be so direct with them.

ultimately, I would like to thank OOO to have made a promo about me. thank you!

1) For some reason, i cannot

1) {{{Disregard: Narfle helped me figure it out}}} For some reason, i cannot assign a Command to the "Left Shift" key. A lot of games use Left Shift as either Run or Crouch, because it can be reached without interrupting a character's WASD movement, which is what i had in mind (for Dash/Bash), but as of right now, it doesn't work in Spiral Knights. I can however use it to capitalize letters while typing, so it's definitely not broken.

2) It would also be extremely helpful if we had the option of being able to double tap to trigger the Dash move like in other games. It makes combat extremely fluid.

For instance: Tap Up+Up to Dash or Left+Left to Dash.

3) Before the UI update, if i were to pick up a Health Pill, i could drag it from inventory slot 1 to inventory slot 4 without a problem. (I like to immediately move Health Pills to slot 4 and remedy pills to slot 1. But now, i can't do that. I have to wait until i have 4 different items (Vials, Pills, Bot) in order to arrange my items in the manner that i'd like.

Also, i'm still having these issues (just tested them again):
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/79270#comment-695639

Regarding the latest patch:
1) Dash and Shield Bash seems like a lot of fun, but i can't map the commands properly, so i'm not using them at the moment. Please help me figure out why i can't use Left Shift. Maybe i'm just overlooking something :(

2) Promos are fantastic (new items are always exciting). Please add a matching Trojan mask. Better yet, make a Trojan Armor series. A Bioshock-type helm would also look quite nice with the Thunderous Plate Mail.

3) Not a fan of the new UI or Icons, but at least now we can disable the weapon wheel. I did like how the weapon wheel looked (because it maintained the old art style and remind me of the Secret of Mana/Evermore selection wheel) but it had a tendency of making my weapons invisible.

4) As Mickmane said, it's difficult to distinguish between items in the Auction House now.

Left shift is the default 'modifier' key--i.e., left shift + mouse click = either dash or bash. You can remap the modifier key to something else if you want to use left shift for other things. Also, yes, I agree: double-tap would be easier. A number of players brought that up in testing feedback.

'Fixing' what isn't broken...

Great, you've finally done it.
Now SK has lost 90% of it's uniquess that made it stand out among all other MMO's and I sure hope you will suffer for it.
I don't care about the dash/bash, I don't care about the battle-sprites anymore, heck I don't even care about the fact that this atrocity of 'weapon wheel' is no longer in my sights.
I've lost my 'link' to SK at the time the new UI tried to fix stuff that and wasn't broken and changed it into something that nobody really wanted, but this right now just outright slaughtered it for me. I'm done with it. I throw my White Chapeau into the dust and surrender...
Why don't you just add mudbrown and pixelated 'high-rez textures' or shove a server-tower down my throat while you're at it OOO, if anytime now's the perfect moment.
One of the only reasons I could put up with the never-ending grindfest that is this game was the amazing artstyle. The stylized, unique and charming simplicity that made the simple and straightforward gameplay all the more enjoyable.
I loathe and at the same time feel sad for the poor chump who had to make the new item-icons, not even the architect of the new UI had such a bad job to do (though that guy clearly didn't know what kind of game he was doing it for).
I think can say that I respect Ian/Malakyn as an artist (from MacHall, 3PS and SK) who knows his stuff, and I can't really believe that this idea grew on him, rather than some braindead marketing-wretch who feels the need to flatten everything special about this game.

I'll maybe keep an eye on SK in the future to see if the devs FINALLY listen to the people who play and pay their game, if any of these changes get a workover that turns them tolerable for me or (god behold) they actually release content rather than gimmicky accessoires and 'shiny-fy' the game, but I honestly doubt it...

Hmm, what control scheme are you using? I started with the default WASD, and left shift is the default modifier key. Not sure why it wouldn't be working--you might have come across a bug of some kind. What I would try: reset to the default WASD, as that should put your modifier key back to left shift, then just remap toggle AT to something else. If that doesn't work, I would report it.

After a few games, here's my thoughts

On Dash and Bash:

Freaking love the dash, makes bombing easier and more fun (specially with vortexes), and the bash isnt as useful as I hoped it would be but it's still pretty decent. I can see swordsmen getting the most of of these abilities offensively while bombers and gunners use them more for defense.

I do hope monsters do get a buff to compensate for these skills (and for the future Battle Sprites, too).

On the new weapon Icons and weapon wheel :

They arent as bad as I expected they would be, but now they feel really, REALLY generic and bloomy; standard MMO look (heck, for a minutes there I was already confusing some for WoW icons). Sad that some of what made me love SK is slowly getting replaced with generic fluff for broader appeal but I've come to accept that since it's apparent no amount of criticism and complaints will change OOO's plans anymore regarding it. Another complaint is that some of them look too similar together at a glance; browsing the AH can be a tad confusing and having 2 shadow weapons can left you wondering which is what unless you take the time to really look at it, happens with weapons with similar color schemes as well.

The fact that the weapon wheel is turn on or off is a pretty good thing, specially with the new icons, but there has to be a way to check which weapon you have cursed without it.

On the Storm promo:

I really, REALLY like the looks of the new costumes thou I think the eyes of fury look bad with the armors and the crest isnt that good either. That said, I also dislike the fact that the armors are the rare part of the promo, since the helmets dont look that good on their own or with other costumes/armors.

Still, they do look pretty darn [shiny] when combined (the thunder plate mail and champion helm look really good together) but it's not enough to get me to buy more ce. OOO lost my money months ago.

I haven't been looking into this forum nor game for awhile (because of crappy UI I couldn't get used to), but I still kept SK page "liked" on fb in slim hope they revert UI or something. Today I noticed a post about new promo and out of curiosity I've checked new promo items on wiki and suddenly I spotted new item icons. At first I though it is not real, it is not happening, it can't be true. So generic, so WoW, so ugly. Such a disappointment. A time to unlike SK on fb has come - I've lost any hope for a slick high quality design. Sad, sad.

Take off your mask. Then show us your Smile.

The more I use the Bash and Dash, the more I like it. But that might be because I'm using a Salt Bomb to dance around in conjunction with. It's quite satisfying to charge a Slime into a shard just before it explodes. Dumping a bomb into the middle of a group of enemies and dashing away is also effective.

... Now I'm starting to convince myself that this was just a Bomber Buff in disguise.

A lot of peeps are gonna hate

A lot of peeps are gonna hate me for saying this, but I find the new icons go well together with the UI and they now give me the feel this game got young again. Looking back now, the old UI looks really bland (or maybe I'm just a glutton for things with lighting), and I'm not regretting the change.

That said, I would like to see the important stuff (HP Bar, Shield Bar) below my knight, my one-time use items above and my crowns and energy shown at all times. I need these at those exact places because they were the best places for them; and I'm not the only one requesting this either. I like the UI style and I don't mind the weapon wheel, but I want some things the way they were before. Make it happen, OOO.

So onto Dash und Bash.

What else can I really say that hasn't already been said here and in the testing forums? Ohwait.
THANK YOU FOR ADDING MORE METAGAME TO THIS GAME!

Seriously, I can't thank you enough for this; I was waiting for this game to be less boring, less straight-forward. Thank god you added these new mechanics, and the battle sprites that will be released sometime later, in order to make this game spicier.

Current PROS: 1.) Dash makes

Current PROS:
1.) Dash makes combat more fluid allowing you to save your skin more frequently when you've run out of Striker boost, can't cloak or have a broken shield (both PvE and PvP).
2.) I used to dislike Lockdown and rarely play it but with the simple addition of a dash, it seems to have made it more fun and a little more dynamic instead of being based on who has the faster connection and better UVs etc.
3.)

Current CONS:

1.) Dash seems to have rather tiny invincibility frames, most likely for balance purposes but I'll have to look into it more. but it seems as if Dash is more intended for getting out of the way of something as opposed to Dashing through something, e.g. It's almost impossible (for me at least) to try and time the Dash with an enemy attack to (I imagined it would've been more like Slip Dash from Vindictus)
2.) Simply put, the new squarish icons don't fit in the game, no word of a lie, my first thoughts were "Wow new icons, these are sick." but the more I play the more I am reminded of a Minecraft user-made texture pack feel. Like George Carlin on god and religion: "I really tried, I really, really tried." I really did, they're new, fresh and they're not ALL bad but they really don't 'fit' in with the style of Spiral Knights, I dont think there will ever be a time where I would have asked for a revamp of every single icon and replacements with WoW/TERA-style ones, SK is great for it's simplicity. I guess time will tell if I will warm up to them.
