You know, as much as people complain about the grind getting your 4* gear heated, it seems if you play the game in shorter bursts instead of getting burnt out from long multi-hour play sessions, it's much more manageable.
Then again, if you think about it (and I can't believe I'm saying this), mist energy actually did that better.

I had the exact same thought. When mist disappeared, my goals somewhat with it. With mist, I tried to use all the time the game gave to me, but when I got no limit, I somehow lost motivation and played less overall. So, from this point of view, I enjoyed the mist energy more. Then, there are other things like economy and huge disadvantage for data miners.
Not too long ago I was also thinking about those energy gates, that "aren't worth" opening. There are actually several factors that affect that gates "worthiness." Of course, those are: what are you paying for (how much are things behind it worth) and for how many people are you paying. (These aren't actually that many... Let's say other factors are hidden in the first part.) The second part is something very interesting. When you open a gate with 4 boxes somewhere deep in Tier 3, you are paying about 300 crowns for 200 crowns if you're lucky and each box gives you a gold coin. But! If you are in a party of 4 knights, each of them gains those ~200 crowns for free, thus your party makes 800 crowns from 300 crowns. I think you get the idea.

Also, more on the topic of your post, Ze-Epik. While I was doing my research, I had almost no problems with the game. I wasn't aiming to craft something, collect lots of crowns or maximize my crowns per time ratio. I just did my own thing, and when I needed to spend few crowns, I had decent amount from my research adventures. On the other hand, I made some goals for myself to reach, and those were sometimes not fun. Waste another hour of running through OCH for the n-th time only because I can't kill Seerus with Catalyzer shot (and that way verify his HP) in all that chaos with tons of enemies and healing from battlepods? This is actually quite funny story. I always calculated my hits for 3x multiplied health, but his 3rd phase has 4x health, thus I couldn't get him killed the way I wanted. :D But it got quite annoying. Right now, I'd like to finally wrap up this project because I've got everything I've aimed to get, but... There are still data I want to collect.
