Most all my friends on steam scold me, and shame me, when they see me play it. They act almost like it's a cardinal sin to play it.
one of my other friends told me it looks childish to him, and someone else said he played it for an hour and said it had a bad community.
I don't get where they are getting all these, they also say the gameplay is clunky and repetitive.
I disagree on most, if not all of these.
What are your thoughts?

I am also new to writing in forums, so please forgive me if i come off as a bit of a noob :P

I wonder what they play.
Game has quite a few things that should be fixed (LD, some weapons, etc.) but to be honest, it's a great game.
Best F2P game ever played by far.

Yeah, I've had friends who have played this for an hour and then never touched again. Honestly, I think you need to put more than an hour into this game to get into it and figure out what the game's about.

This game's not perfect but when you look back at the hours you've spent playing it you realise there's something very special about it that keeps you coming back.

I get slated by my friends for playing this too but as Leekcoco said they just jelly, they don't know what they're missing ;)

I wouldn't say Spiral Knights

I wouldn't say Spiral Knights is the best free-to-play MMO I've played, but it's pretty all right. Anyway, off-topic.

What I would do is tell them to back off; what games you play is none of their business and they should quite frankly shut up about it. If they don't like the game for their own reasons then fine, they don't have to play it. Whether or not you do has nothing to do with them and you shouldn't have to deal with them bugging you for playing. Next time they do that tell them that you play it because you like it and that they should mind their own business. If they're really your friends they'll respect that you have an opinion of your own (gasp!) and leave you alone. If not, I guess it's a good a time to start trimming your friends list.

Also, you can get an avatar by clicking on 'Forum Preferences' next to the search bar.

childish, but also not childish

The graphics are very cute and arguably childish, but the rest of the game is not really childish. The devilite humor is fairly adult --- basically the movie "Office Space" in game form. The pop culture references, such as Callahan, are pretty old. The game harkens back to an earlier era of games. You could say that the game is designed for adults who want to revisit the fun of their childhoods. (Perhaps this describes Nick?)

For example, I've seen some other MMOs advertised online recently using scantily clad, busty ladies copping dreamy, submissive attitudes. Judging solely from their ads, Spiral Knights is for a more refined, adult audience than those games are.

Game-playing adults that I know find Spiral Knights' style delightful. And they prioritize clever, fun game play over graphical style anyway. Some of them still dislike Spiral Knights, for its energy system, or for its too-simple mechanics. But they say, "to each his own". This is how adults behave. Your friends act as if they are sophisticated, but I'm not sure that they are.

lack of content, especially

lack of content, especially if you started playing this when it first came out on steam, content starts to get really easy and boring, you'll farm so much that you'll get bored, so really no ce for you, all LD is polaris spam or just straight up combo spam, and GvG is ruined by jempires, and like all the update sucks now, swarm monsters are so easy to kill, dash has a delay between your attacks after you dash, so you really can't use it offensively in LD (never LD when it came out, but from the delay, seems like no one does) shield bash isn't even a bash, it's a charge and why is it even disabled in LD when guardian is the only ability with a shield and its the slowest out of them all when their using the ability.

If they don't like it, that's okay. Not all games is to everyone's taste.

Now, if they scold you for it, then it becomes a problem. They could probably get scolded themselves by Valve for harassment.

For example, I've seen some other MMOs advertised online recently using scantily clad, busty ladies copping dreamy, submissive attitudes.

I get so Vog-blasted angry when I see one of those ads...

So, easy question

The thing is, okay, speech time.

Over the years, our community has evolved to "realistic" games such as CoD and Battlefield games. When they see a game like Spiral Knights or TF2, they immediately call it an outcast. The graphics are so different from any modern games (1), and people don't realize that you have to use your sword too, not just your gun, so they get called a noob (2). That explains it. If it isn't a Modern FPS or something like WoW, then they hate it.

(1) Graphics are "bad"
(2) The community is "bad"

My take on the situation

Like Great explained, some people judge a game based on the graphics, which is a horrible thing to do. I really hate people that do that. There is more to a game than just graphics. Yeah Spiral Knights may not the best game, but it is fun to play. I think when your "friends" said that this game has a bad community, they must have played LD. Now there, it's bad, anyone can agree. But outside from that, it's way better. There will always be jerks and trolls in any online game, you can't stop that.

In my humblest opinion, I

In my humblest opinion, I don't mind if people don't like what we all like. No one has the same tastes. A simple "Nah, I don't like it" or "It's just not my thing" is alright with me, and I respect them for their opinion. They can also give a few reasons if they want, and I'll still respect them if they're calm about it.

However, if they start getting mean or explicit such as "Dude it sucks why the hell are you playing it!? It's for babies!", then that kinda annoys me.

But if they start discriminating one of its players who might be one of their friends, then they are just being downright stupid in the head.

Heck, it's almost like the fans of one of the most top internet trends we never though would happen in a million years Vs. its haters. (You know what I'm talking about)

Yeah LD is just horrible compared to the PVE community @.@

For the same reason they don't like advertisements.

Because Spiral Knights is heavily laiden with free to play trappings... think about the typical experience of players coming to Spiral Knights. And it goes something like this:

1. Install the game
2. Play the initial missions.
3. Get to Haven, figure out whats what after skipping through several miles of unnecessarily long text.
4. Go through some of the starting missions.
5. And then, they stop.

Because they ran out of energy.

And that's when they quit playing and uninstall the game. But not necessarily.

After a few days of playing, they learn more about the energy system. They learn that:
1. Crystal Energy, also known as real world money, is needed to craft all of the fun/entertaining items in the game.
2. They won't be earning enough crowns to purchase crystal energy on a regular basis until they get to the endgame, and even then, that presumes that they want to play the same level over and over and over.... which means that...
3. This game is just another grindfest. Just like every other crappy facebook game that requires you to wait for hours just so that you can receive epeen. -or- you can give them money. For the low price of whatever you're willing to pay, you can receive self esteem.

And then if they stay after that, because maybe they like the community, or maybe they like the art style, then they see how the updates are handled.
1. Updates are relatively sparse due to a small development team. As if people have the heart enough to care.
2. That the developers don't communicate well with the players, or respond to them all that often.
3. That the developers often make strange unexplained decisions that aren't supportive of the playerbase. A lot of these are money grabs. Even if the developers are improving, they still have the permanent marks known as "radiant sun shards", "shadow lairs", and vog knows how many other small and large mistakes the developers let the players pick at into some huge ordeal.

We, the few and far between, the ones of us that at least care enough to post on the forum, see things through truly rose tinted shades. It is NOT so much that the energy system is "unfair" or "bad", it is that it is seen as being that way. Spiral Knights as a game, for all intents and purposes, conforms to the genre of "F2P MMO", it introduces nothing new, and on top of that, is slow to adapt to a changing environment.

And that is, to the best of my understanding, why people don't like Spiral Knights.

You could also argue that "stupid people" keep playing when they run out of energy. You've all heard the Lockdowners, you know.

My argument as to why it's hated so much is that it's too classic. Too Zelda. But I never got to play Zelda so I like this.

I was going to actually write a post supporting the "SK is good" side and walk off happily, but Fehzor's mention of the RSS nerf made me think otherwise (I had damage vs. undead VH on it, the magical Slag-Slayer...). I don't get how it's a money grab. Could you (Fehzor) perhaps clarify what you meant and how it was intended as a money grab? I just thought it was a really bad mistake with no turning back, but was it done with a sinister intent?

I actually played originally only for the TF2 hat, but it was my starting party I have to thank for bringing me in. I ended up starting with the Snarby gate without knowing, and the people I met on the first leg of that run were so nice to run with, that I ended up finishing the whole thing rather than leaving at the terminal. The next day, I turned on my computer and went to go open up TF2 to get the hat. While it was loading up, I hit the cancel button, and proceeded to move my cursor over to the Spiral Knights shortcut, and started loading up that instead.

Reasons I thought of.

1. The latency, its no secret that this game is delaying/lagging hardcore for people not living on the main servers. Hell, even some of the people who live on the servers will lag from time to time. A quote from someone that experienced it living in 2 different continents : 'this is like an entirely different game'[after playing without hardcore delay].

2. energy system. pretty self explanatory

3. childish looking graphics. yeah...

4. not edgy enough

5. lack of sexy graphics and fanservice to draw in prospective players

6. Not enough lore.

7. lockdown players, specifically laggy ones that get tired and quit the game.

8. Extremely repetitive grindfest lacking content.

9. They got scammed in SK.

10. Too many kids

Have your steam friends actually played the game?

Story Time:

When my brother saw me play this for the first time, he straight away said it looked terrible. When he saw me play Blast Network he said that looks really fun. NOTE. he has never even tried the game and he's being extremely biased.

The end

Have your friends actually played the game? Or are they just being biased and judging it by it's looks? Also if you don't actually know them, just remove them. I only have 1 person on my friends list who I don't actually know, but he's pretty laid-back and open minded. Most people dislike the game and have actually left the game due to the energy system, but I think it keeps the people sane. No energy = nearly every 5* person to be rich and = gone crazy and then gets almost every item in the game. I think this is actually one of the best games I have ever played. Although that fat masked guy down at Depth 28 has kinda ruined the game by letting his enemies have instant access to killing him over and over. I think it's ruined it because it's killed arcade.

Ironically to what others are

Ironically to what others are saying, this is the one game, that has an actually not too bad of a grind. Its not a short grind by any means, but its a lot better than other games.

Because of the daily limit on play (so you can do 2-3 runs a day w/ boss in Missions) and that each mission isn't just 'click on enemy, spam skills until its dead, use pots when needed, rinse and repeat.'
Its a lot more laid back and more enjoyable than other MMOG.

And believe me- I HATE grinding. I've actually used Cheat Codes (to boost EXP gains) in games when I had to grind, because if I don't I would basically stop playing the game.

I can see how they might find the game childish. first impressions for the graphics and story makes it seem that way. (maybe a more detailed and dramatic intro to the game story would be better. a cutscene would be awesome) but people just need to play the game for a while. also, I have no idea how someone can establish that it has a bad commuity from just 1 hour of playing. oh well, haters gonna hate.

I just want to say: read some of the in-game dialogue. It really does come off kiddy-friendly. On the surface, and especially early on, the game doesn't exactly represent itself well. Once you get to tier 2 and beyond, the game starts showing it's true colors. Runs start to become more difficult, you get yourself into a good guild with good friends, the whole in-game economy starts coming into perspective, and a new level of depth in the game emerges.

SK's attempts to make it more accessible ironically is a bit discouraging to more mature players.
