Harry and Dervenin returned to the shop to find Taric packing food into his bag. "Vat arre ya doeen, Taric?" Harry asked. "Yeah, where'r ya goin'?" Dervenin added. Taric stopped and sighed, pointedly not looking at them.
"I'm going to Haven."
"Why!?" Dervenin asked.
"Because weavers have always been a curse on society. I want to show them that we're capable of being better."
"All yer gonna show them is how easily ya kin git roasted on a spit."
"No, I'm going to show them that weavers can be heroes."
"You're gonna fail. Y'know why? 'Cuz ya ain't a hero. Ya can't show people a side o'ya that ain't there."
"So you think I'm evil, then? That I really am a curse on society?"
"No, I wasn't sayin'-"
"Then what were you saying!?"
"Shush! I cain't git nowhere wit you interruptin' me."
"Okay. So what were you saing?"
"Just 'cuz ya ain't a hero don't mean yer a villain. There's a middle ground, y'know."
"But we have to offset the bad blood between us."
"No, ya don't. Ye'll live jus' fine without it settlin' anythang."
"Not if they're always trying to kill me."
"Ya ain't settlin' nothin' by gettin' yerself kill't. Trust me on that, kid."
Taric resumed packing his bag. "Then we'll get killed either way. I'd rather die trying to fix the world than die just sitting here." Dervenin glanced at Harry and shrugged. Harry shrugged back, then began packing his own bag. Dervenin's eyes widened. "Hey, wait! You goin' too?" Harry grinned and replied, "Ee's got a point, mon. Imma help eem." Outvoted and already feeling lonely, Dervenin began packing his bag as well. "No use sittin' here alone..." he muttered to himself.
They finished packing a couple hours later, and stepped out into the evening street. As they approached the city limits, Gwen ran up to meet them. "Hey! Where are you all going?" Taric took her hands and looked her in the eye. "I'm going to Haven. You can't stop me." Gwen lowered her eyes and said quietly, "I don't want to stop you. Just..." She looked up at him. "...stay safe, okay?" She stroked his cheek and gazed lovingly into his eyes. She seemed almost...motherly. He took her hand and squeezed it gently. "I can't promise to stay safe, but I can promise to come back alive." Gwen bit her lip and nodded, then let go.
Harry breathed a sigh of relief as they stepped across the town border onto the open road. Taric and Dervenin looked at him incredulously. "What's the matter, Harry?" Taric asked. For once, Harry seemed neither joyous nor angry. His face displayed a quiet, solemn side to him that neither of them had seen before. He put a hand on Taric's shoulder and said, "Aye'm glad aye cud com. As a child, aye dreamt ahf saving ze vorld...sanks to yoo, aye can travel zat road. Eet von't be eesy, and aye espek to die, but..." He gazed up at the clouds. "...eef eet means even von person lives to see ze light ahf day, eet ees vorth it to me." Taric put his hand on Harry's shoulder as well.
"Thanks, Harry. Strange as it may seem...that meant the world to me."
Nice chapter, keep up the good work Thinslayer!
Well that ending was great. Horrifyingly disgusting in the eyes of Malkovich but beautiful none the less.
I still plan on finishing this thing. Also, a minor plot twist is planned. When people go to become heroes, they expect to encounter situations they can resolve. Taric, however, will not be so fortunate. >:D
I saw you posting 23 seconds ago, so I juster posted here xD
I wonder what Vargon is doing...
Speaking of which...
*Vargon was last seen in the forest outside Rudkin's Inn. I'm toying with the idea of giving him an awesome twist.
*Blue is Carter's pet. She was supposed to be following him, but I haven't recorded it. I'll just say he left her behind or something.
*Vin will make his cameo only when Gwen reappears nearby. This is not planned to be soon.
*Callus, Swordpow, Topoyozada, and U77654 may be used as disposable Cobalt knights when necessary.
*I may swap the names of Rau'eas and U77654.
*Ammet may be used as a new supporting character to spice things up. No promises though.
*Rau'eas is not likely to be used. I have no clue how to incorporate battle sprites into the story.
*Tom MacGregor is not likely to be used, as he carries more lore baggage than I can handle.
*Malkovich may be used as a miniboss.
*Dragon may be used as "the smart kid" who helps the heroes briefly.
I forgot to say that Malkovich enjoys bio expirimentaition. He sees it as a way of making living things useful.
Baw. You know, I never intended for him to be in the main plot. I submitted him with the intention of him being a separate "and now for something completely different" segment every few chapters to explore the differences between this version of Cradle and the game. In this case, "lore baggage" wouldn't be as much of a problem, since his role would basically be to get into random situations and then comment on them. It might actually help; hey, free characterization!
FWIW, if I was writing this the first thing Tom would do when he learned how Cradle works would be to try and get to the Core. Because there's always something plot-relevant left behind in places like that, and my impression is that it would keep him nicely segregated from the main characters.
All right, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the tip!
Bumped back to the front page.
I aim to continue this. I think I have a story now, too.
(To those wondering what we're talking about, we're referring to an RP on another website.)
She was saddened by him. She still likes him (sorta), but she will still love him even if she doesn't like him. She may not be around for long, though. There was a reason for her urgency.
Not trying to be rude, but is the next chapter close to being released? I WANT TO SEE THE STORY DANG IT!
I haven't had much time to work on it, no thanks to school, but I haven't abandoned it. I'll aim for a release tomorrow or Wednesday.
Haven was empty.
There were no knights scurrying around the Auction House, buying, selling, cheating, or trading their way to wealth and power. There were no Strangers, advising new knights, helping people find their way in the world, or caring for their pet snipes. Speaking of which, there were no snipes either, flying, tweeting, ruffling and pruning their feathers, or getting underfoot. Even the plants looked stressed and wilted.
Haven was empty.
The air felt hot, stuffy, and stale. Footfalls made crunching sounds on the untrodden, dirt-laden pavement. Fog clouded sight so that one couldn't see more than a few meters ahead. The foul stench of death filled the nostrils, accompanied by the occasional cries of the vultures circling overhead.
Haven was empty.
Taric kicked open a door, and immediately the room depressurized, sending out a reeking gust of wind through the doorway. He plugged his nose, stepped inside, and nearly vomited at the sight on the floor. The remains of a woman and child lay on the floor, their flesh rotting away to dust. A mouldy steak and vegetable dinner sat on the table. Taric swung outside and coughed, trying hard to settle the queasiness in his stomach. "Vat happened here?" Harry asked once they were inside, incredulous that there existed a power capable of reducing an entire army of powerful knights to rotting dust. Dervenin shrugged and coughed, not wanting to open his mouth to reply, lest he join Taric and toss up his stomach contents.
The three of them opened a few doors and finally found a shelter that had an acceptably mild stench. "What the heck happened here!?" Taric exclaimed. Harry sighed and muttered, "My kvestion esacly." Their question was answered when they heard footsteps just outside the door. When the footsteps passed, Taric peeked out the window.
A large man with long platinum-blond hair and dressed in a bright red overcoat with black leather boots stood in the middle of the road. He sniffed the air for a little bit, extended his hand, and generated a little poison gas from his hand. The poison disappeared into the night air. Taric ducked back under the window and sat down. "There's a red-coated maniac outside generating poison gas in the air! What should we do?"
"Maybe get some gas masks?" Devenin suggested.
"There aren't any in here. Look around; it's a small room, and I don't see any cabinets," Taric replied.
"Besides, zey von't fit me," Harry added.
Taric thought for a moment, then generated a small force field around himself. He dispelled it and exclaimed, "I know! We can keep out the gas with a repulsion field!" Harry threw a furry paw over his mouth and whispered harshly, "Not so loud!" Taric nodded, peeked out the window again to make sure they weren't heard, and sat down. "Okay, so here's what we do. Poison can be counteracted with shock, which we can generate with Haven's weather controller by creating storm clouds. If the lightning doesn't work, the rain should act as a backup by washing it to the surface. To get there, I'll throw up a repulsion force field over us, and we'll sneak over there via the alleyways. Sound like a plan?" Dervenin and Harry nodded.
Taric threw up the force field and opened the hatch, allowing poisonous air to flow into the room. He peeked around the corner, and determining that it was safe, beckoned the others to follow him. They weaved their way through the alleys, keeping a close eye on their surroundings to make sure that red-coated man wasn't anywhere near them. It took them the better part of an hour to track down the weather controller, which was on the roof of Spiral HQ. Dervenin charged into the doors and, with Taric's help, blasted them open. Taric quickly filled the doorway with the repulsion field to keep the poison from flowing in and shut the doors as tight as he could.
Now that they were in fresh air, they took a look around HQ. It, too, was empty, and judging from the terminal screens, it was abandoned in haste. They went up several flights of stairs until they reached the roof access. Taric again threw up a force field and opened the door, and shut it behind them when they went through. There sat the weather controller, and beside it stood a deactivated terminal. He began to fiddle with it, but Harry pulled him back. "Vait! Aye know hau to handle zees sings." Still under the cover of Taric's force field, Harry activated the terminal and began to type on it.

Already, the storm clouds began to form over Haven, and the chill began to set in. "Let's go inside!" Harry declared, so they went back through the door, shut it tight, and headed back down to the bottom floor to wait.
"Let's hope this works," Taric muttered.
This is nice Thin and I am wondering if Visible is accepted into the story?
I don't really have a use for Ghostmane Stalkers yet.
Hmmm... Poison and rotting bodies... Either I'm about to appear or one of my drones are monitoring these actions. I am very interested to where this is heading.
I didn't mean that guy... I meant as in I'm working with the enemy... Unless that is an ability those filthy "special" humans have.
"Mechao" is a next-generation android Mecha Knight who operates semi-autonomously under the supervision of the opposing gremlins.
Just making sure you knew. I don't like it when people joke about my brilliance. I am suppior
That also didn't answe my question. Do those filthy "special" knights have this power? If so I should build a contraption that sucks the power out of them. It will make my weapons stronger...haha
Of course I am talking about the poisonous gases. If I captured one of these hazard creators then the refineries wouldn't have to be rushed as much. I need fuel for the missiles.
Name: Serial code G-55t prototype (aka Gist)
Species: Construct
Gender: N/A (if you really need one then male)
Life Stage: Unknown. Seems to be adolescent.
Age: Unknown
Appearance: Base color is pure neutrals, but some parts change in color (refer to arsenal/abilities). Has an anatomy similar to a mecha knight with tall height. The helm has its visor removed, revealing + eyes. The armor is made to look like a flack jacket along with exhaust pipes seen on mecha knights. Legs remain the same, but the right arm is now that of a lumber's and the left arm is a cannon of sorts.
Biography: Gist was found almost nothing but scrap recently in a deconstruction zone by an Emberlight salvage crew. It some time in Emberlight after repairs voluntarily helping salvage crews before taking interest in passing knights and followed them. It saved some knights once when they were surrounded in a compound, and agreed to follow them back to haven. Upon arriving, Gist was given a through examination by R&D, noting its advanced sentience and odd modifications. They found out that Gist was part of an experimental program by the gremlins, but haven't much intel in that matter. They also found out that the arm cannon was built into Gist during its creation; the lumber arm came from its repairs in Emberlight. Gist requested to aid the knights however it can, in hopes it can figure out its identity. And with that, was formally inducted into the Spiral Order and given its name. Gist mostly served in the front lines before the events of the story.
Personality: Gist is a rather chipper fellow. Curious in the daily lives of others, maybe to make up for its inorganic exterior. Gist can be overbearing at times as a result, but really doesn't want to make any enemies. The only time Gist is serious is when it's presented information about its origin, or a battle. It malfunctions from time to time, and might say/do things that are out-of-character and/or bad, after which it will apologize profusely.
Desired role: Supportive. If that is full/undesirable, then minor.
Expendability: Whenever. It would be nice if Gist got some closure before death though. The whole consciousness/mechanical body is a bit of a tossup, I know.
Arsenal/Abilities: Gist's sentience gives it superior tactical ability, and fights much like a rather experienced knight. Its special arm cannon has adjustable modes of firing, damage types, and status effects (this is what changes some of its colors; also, no curse). That can all be changed on the fly making for lots of versatility. The downside is that the cannon more than often subject to malfunction, and will need a skilled technician for repairs. If any enemies get too close, then Gist gives the poor sucker a whack. Gist would be sad for its lack of hands if its cannon didn't have a tractor beam-like setting.
Haha. Great. Another machine of pure intellegence. Sadly I see that he is joining the flawed flesh-filled fools. Sad. The great one could use another commander.
So when do we get to watch those three die of a horrible plauge. They're going to die right? Please?
You know, Gist could be your associate of sorts and I don't mind at all. I don't think of much when making a character, so I just recently realized that it's his memories/identity that are his primary motivation. Waiting on Thin to see what's the word.
You know, I might be able to fit him in as another main. No promises, though...
Not trying I be rude but WHAT IS TAKING YOU SO LONG? I mean I could understand if you had writers block but the way you ended things in the last chapter seemed like it would take care of that. Or maybe you don't have enough time. Either way I hope you make the next chapter soon. So far this things is great and I don't want it to stop.
I've been rather preoccupied elsewhere. I'll try to have something up soon.
...That Cobalt Knight tasted like Chicken...
...Im sleepy...Gonna go sleep...
...Havent seen anyone in a while....
...Im sleepy again...
...elsewhere employing Gwen to better places, in more powerful positions. I personally witnessed that...
I hope my introductions is amazing. I've been planning something that involves fireworks and twenty gallons of blood from my mortal enemies. Hahaha. HAHAHAHAHA... *cough*. But it's your comic.
Your introduction involved a whole lot of poison and dead bodies. ;)
All I feel is happiness. Happiness and my CPU processing the fact that I am very happy.
Well, it been almost a year now, I can see this obviously died off. Well, maybe there will be revival!... Probably not, so I'm just gonna go twiddle my thumbs in a corner.
Thanks Warp-Master and Dewca. I'm still thinking up the story; Taric's character has been a trouble spot for me, because I didn't fully understand his concept. But now I think I've got him figured out, so I should have some good story material again. I also know now where the next story post will take place.
Expect something soon. ^_^
