Zydrate Knight bids you Greetings!

Tiide and I found each other because we're interested in more than paragraph text-based roleplay. We're interested in physical, in-game roleplay. Personal interaction. To that effect, we have recognized that the game does not give us a lot to work with in regards to the games lore, logistics, physics, and general world rules. We hope that by clearing up some of it, we can encourage people to subscribe to some more properly set logistics and begin to roleplay in a more "Live" manner.

As a result, a lot of this is theoretical. Given the vagueness, it's up to us to set a few rules. (Might as well!)
Much of this can be agreed upon by consensus.

Our goal is to gain a small group willing to do in-game RP. 4-8 is ideal, and build up from there.
Tiide and I have compiled this list of notes via observation. If you'd like to help us with the roleplaying community here, contact either of us.

There's a lot of writers here, we hope by understanding the world better, we can draw them out of single-story based "roleplay" and hope they all come to us in-game.

Anyone is welcome to add to, take away, discuss and inquire into any of this, of course. We're trying to build a community here. Tiide and I are not the lawmakers. More akin to... law-starters :)

Spiral Knights
Race Name: Possibly "Spiralians"

  • Evidence suggests that Spiralians are probably internally organic. The extent of their tech is another topic for consensus
  • We have fingers. Varied possibilites can exist.
  • High emphasis on Militaristic Structure. Albeit a bit more laid back.
  • Not a very high probability of betrayal or negative emotion. (This is mere observation)
  • Possibility to use magic (Magitek, even)
  • --Addendum: Consider that forms of undead exist on this planet. Perhaps magic use was discovered here? (Again, theoretical)
  • Personal coloration a source of discussion. Possible 'skin' color. Possible chosen color via personal Knight.
  • Shields seem to produce forcefields. Interal tech very probable.

Ranks are as follows, these can be utilized in RP:

  • Rank 1: Recruit
  • Rank 2: Apprentice
  • Rank 3: Squire
  • Rank 4: Soldier
  • Rank 5: Knight
  • Rank 6: Knight Elite
  • Rank 7: Defender
  • Rank 8: Defender Elite
  • Rank 9: Champion
  • Rank 10: Vanguard

Lore
Ship: Skylark (Crashed)

  • Power source is currently destroyed, race is mining the planet for a new one. (IE: The core)
  • May spark a debate that this may destroy the planet

Planet: "Cradle"
Species: "The Strangers"

  • Familiar with electricity and energy, and have reasonable intelligence.
  • Language barrier possibly averted via translators.
  • Runs by clockwork, powered by a powerful central core.
  • -An NPC in Haven states that the world is unnatural, that it's a combination of technology from elsewhere. Another idea is that gremlins have been working on it. However, even he states that some of this is theoretical.
  • Seems close to the sun (Can be seen with the graphics turned up). Knights and most indigenous species possibly unaffected.
  • Minerals manipulate how the clockwork functions.
  • Wildlife: Wolvers, Snipes, etc.
  • Constructs are built denizens of Cradle. Probably by Gremlins.
  • Krogmo bribes Knights into fighting each other. Equivilant to sparring.
  • Not every 'monster' is hostile. There are friendlies of each type scattered about.
  • --Devilishs that are pink or orange seem to be friendly.
  • A variant of computer tech exists. Can be best seen right above the Auction House. (One can presume that such things like automobiles and other tech exists, so one need not worry about accidentally dropping some more modern terms.)
  • --Addendum: Another note on Tech: Given that there's plenty of cloth and such, one can assume the planet has factores that produce various necessities and so on.

RP locations

  • Haven, lowly populated instance
  • Mission Lobby
  • -My idea is it could be used as a Command Center or ship
  • -Haven Arcade could serve a similar purpose

Roleplaying Repeat Levels
For those who begin roleplaying in the clockworks, you might find yourself in previously played missions: Places your character may have already been to before. This can be justified in a number of ways such as;

  • The clockworks are ever-changing. Perhaps you just tripped over a previously explored area?
  • Make snide and clever remarks how "This place looks familiar".

Whatever you do, try not to comment ICly something like "Oh psh, I've been through this place a hundred times over." For one, it's not very creative. Secondly, it doesn't give other players much to go with. Without the sense of discovery, what's the point of exploring the clockworks?

Things to Consider
Most of this should be known be veteran roleplayers, but for simply interested writers of the forums, these kinds of things may be less obvious.

I've written (Or rather, copy/pasted) an entire guide if you're not sure how to go about roleplaying. Be sure to check it out. But before you do, here's a very quick rundown of RP tips:

  1. You don't know a character's name ICly. Unless you're roleplaying some kind of Commanding Officer (And you better have the rank to show for it), you can't know a characters name upon meeting them for the first time. For example, that laughable "xXdarkKnightxX" might be a decent typist willing to learn, but they've put far too much time into the character just to reroll them. By extension, my OWN name, The "Academy" part has little to do with the character.
  2. You cannot control another character's actions. This may be difficult to comprehend, considering this forums style of "rolecasting", where you hand your character off to a writer and just let them go nuts. It's different in-game. Any action for or against another character needs to be "attempted" or asked OOCly first.
  3. Speaking of OOC; If there's a problem, communicate! Whisper it to someone and don't let an issue build up.
  4. What happens in game, stays in game. People who do not know you may make assumptions about your personality based off the type of character that you play, or vice versa, but don't allow this to color your view of someone, or let it prevent you from making friendships. People are not their character.
  5. Try your best to type as well as you can, and omit smilie faces when speaking in-character. And if your posts are ridden with typos, my character will likely make fun of you. ("What's a 'lol?' Can I eat it?")

Other rules to live by. I did not include them all from the source, just the most relevant ones. So be sure to click that link, and even google "Roleplaying Etiquette" if you'd like some more information.

Interrupting Active RP

Like in conversation, it is considered rude to interrupt a RP conversation that is going on. Though often role players are more open to others joining in, it is usually wise to try to determine if others are welcome before jumping in.

The simplest and usually fastest way to do this is to send an OOC whisper. Something along the lines of “(( I see you are engaged in role play conversation. Is this a private conversation or may others join in? ))” Quite often you’ll find that role players are seeking others to join them. But be prepared for the times when it is a private conversation not open to others.

There is also the technique of simply listening in to see what is going on with the conversation. Don’t worry! Mom won’t scold you for eavesdropping this time. In life, you can catch a few lines of conversation quickly and determine if it is something you can join or if it is a private matter you should step away from. In WoW RP, because typing takes longer to accomplish than speaking, it takes a bit longer to determine this.

God-moding

This is by far the singlemost irritating rp behavior out there. God-moding is when you do something that affects another character without giving them leave to decide their own actions or opinions. An extreme form of god-moding would be emoting that you stab the other character, killing them instantly. It can take other, more subtle, forms though.

If you emote something along the lines of another person’s character noticing that your character has eyes red from crying, that is god-moding. A better choice would be to emote that your character rubs at eyes red from crying and leave it up to the other player as to whether they notice it or not. Sometimes characters have reasons for not noticing things.

Many role players won’t come flat out and tell someone they are god-moding. That is, perhaps, a fault many share. Generally they will ignore the god-moded behavior and continue on with whatever they were doing or simply ignore the character guilty of it. If you find yourself being ignored or legitimately snubbed and you truly do want to improve, don’t get angry, ask the person about it in whispers. Usually others are quite open to helping eager role players improve their rp skill.

Zydrate's extra note to above:
Sometimes another player may not necessarily be aware they are godmoding. This may be chalked up to naïvety, that they are new to roleplaying. This goes back to "don't let problems build". If they are legitimately unaware, tell them! Chances are they may apologize and try to improve.
And if they get angry and hostile... Then they are probably not the ideal member of the community anyway. (Assuming you worded things nicely)

Interesting. I'd help out,

Interesting.

I'd help out, but I pretty much quit this game due to many reasons and tbh, I've tried RPing with a friend out of game, and I got bored after the first 2 paragraphs. Looks like the lack of entertainment extends past online status!

Maybe if you RP'd in-game, it might help? Who knows.

Dossier: Zydrate Rank:

Dossier: Zydrate
Rank: Knight

She began work as a recruit by fashioning painkillers for sick wildlife on this planet of Cradle. However that was a mere niche, as this was not her calling. She quickly became more apt to mechanical workings, and expressed a fascination with the new planet. Her knowledge of such quickly surpassed many, especially considering her consistent field-work.
That's not to say that's her only field of expertise. Continuing with her usual theme, she's also proven to be very helpful fashioning repairs for our own technology. We lack a power source for proper recharge, but she has fashioned some of the minerals of this planet to help power smaller shuttles and scouting ships. It's not ideal, but it's helpful.

Her combat skills can only be described as... adequate. She can hold her own but her style seems to be more defensive and survivalist. She's not the more honorable knight around, but she's reliable in a pinch.

As for her personality... I can only state that she has questionable sanity. She speaks fairly quickly, spews non-sequiturs and her mind wanders with little provocation.

In a nutshell;

  • Minor chemical knowledge.
  • Impressive mechanical knowledge
  • Adequate combat ability
  • Unstable personality

Report finished.

I must say, this looks like a decent thread, but organisation may be a problem. I haven't heard of many people that sign up for roleplays in this game. I'd like to help, but I'm supposed to be busy this summer. I have plans that need not-doing.

@Scamall

Well when We were trying to get this going we hoped for more of a gathering of RP'rs or at least I did, organization is one thing, and it's another to be online and just want to RP, I mean right now It might just be a few of us but as more people begin to take notice it may hopefully grow, Looking at Zydrate's character story, kinda makes me want to create on or at least create a thread were people CAN create their characters, maybe have a link reaching back to this one, not sure yet, but I appreciate you help! and We hope to get this going :)

Pretty much, less Story telling, and more walk-up random RP.
This isn't going to be like fan-fics are that they right a story and you follow it, we mean RP in the sense that we RP as what our characters are in-game, Spiral knights.
Well along with filling up the criteria above, it's also nice to be discovering more and more about a seemingly unknown environment.

Zydrate-Academy's picture

Discovering the unknown

Discovering the unknown environment just helps give everyone the logic needs to roleplay accurately. That's just my main goal.

Tiide, Votabbot and I engaged in our first RP!

Tiide got all shy and stuttery on us.
Vot flexed his Mech-Corp skillz. And turned his face into a muffin.
Zydrate talked about puppies, science, and tacos.

It was fun!

Yes, twas quite fun, though I created at least one awkward silence with that whole OCH thing. :3

Anyways, I guess I should make an official application thingy...just 'cause.
_____________

Dossier: Vot
Rank: Champion

Vot was never quite good....at anything. Even so, he clawed his way through the ranks of the Order, taking up a job with the Mech-Corp. After being noted as "unsafe" (the Calisaw incident) he was transferred to escort duty. Though he has been known to constantly complain about the job and his co-workers, he sticks with the Corp for reasons unknown. His greatest strength is his experience, and he has been known to "awe" newer knights with stories of the past. Some call him useless, but others think of him as a Jack-of-all-Trades...indeed, he is quite versatile.

He is well trained in the ways of fighting, and holds an air of confidence when in difficult situations. His fighting style is somewhat similar to a brick wall, and is known as "The Grantz". Becoming less effective do to age, but can still hold his own...most of the time.

As for his personality, he's talkive, but his expression is often guarded. He laughs quite a bit, but his laughter is more of a "I'm laughing because it's polite" instead of "I'm laughing because I find this funny".

Summing it up;

  • No outstanding expertise.
  • High levels of experience.
  • Guardian combat style.
  • Lighthearted attitude.

Note: Still has a regional accent from Isora.

There's no application to anything. There's nothing to sign up for. Just good ol' random fun.

And it looks like you just copied my background. Though could make sense if the same person wrote it. (But it doesn't look like it was)

BTW, don't know if the Knights had a country called "Britain". Could call it a "Personalized accent".

Hopefully this goes well for those of you who are having fun with it, though. ^.^

There might be some organization involved. Beyond standard conversations (which are random), we may plan to RP through some of the clockworks. That might require organization.

There is nothing wrong with learning either, We are much more then open to Beginners or people who may have had a rough time in the past, so long as your willing to improve :)
Right now it's extremely basic but we tend to have our characters develop :)

Tevokkia's picture
Tevokkia
...

Oh .... ha ... *insert hysterical giggling here* Oh dear, Tiide, I think you've misunderstood me a little. It's not that I'm a beginner or have had a rough time, I just don't want to steamroll you all into a plot of my own choosing since there isn't an established storyteller. Because I probably would. (My husband is looking over my shoulder and laughing, saying "Oh yeah, you definitely would.") I've been roleplaying (nearly constantly, in one form or another) for over 15 years, and I get really very particular.

Zydrate, the above is why I would likely drive you insane, and by "in the area" I mean "everyone who could possibly be privy to the chat taking place". So essentially, everyone in that instance of Haven. Call me a bit silly and old-fashioned, but I learned to roleplay online in the old AOL chatrooms back in the mid 1990s, where you went somewhere very specific to play and didn't really expect anyone who WASN'T playing to be in the room. I suppose I'm just comfortable with that model, and like the security of knowing that my character can walk up to any character I see and initiate in-game conversation, rather than having to break myself out of the story zone to establish whether or not the person is part of the group of individuals playing.

If you guys should need anything - organizational help outside the clockworks, resources, whatever (I'm really not the least bit interested in roleplaying inside the Clockworks) - do feel free to let me know. I really do wish you all the best of luck with this, but I think it's probably to everyone's benefit that I not actually participate as a player.

Kanoka's picture

Hmm...intriguing.

This seems to be very interesting. I would love to partake in it at any moment in-game - although I have never done an authentic role-play before - so, if you would be willing, I would love to join in at some point!

@Xylka: If you really are that dissatisfied with the way that the story runs, tell me. (To avert confusion, I am the friend he speaks of.) You know that whenever you get me to begin any type of document/writing/story, I will create extensive detail in somewhere that I may appreciate, but you may not. Maybe you should start us off next time...but I usually try to do some starts, since you've started all of our most successful story lines. :P

Hehe...now, after that note, I await my confirmation...*goes into stasis mode*

Zydrate-Academy's picture

I started in AOL Chatrooms

I started in AOL Chatrooms myself, and I didn't really develope that style of play.

And being the center of a story now and then is not bad in itself, but being the center of attention -every time- is not good. If that's a problem, then it's quite the shame that we're losing out on a potential roleplayer.

Tevokkia's picture
Tevokkia

That's ... not quite what I meant. Steering the plot and being the center of attention are two different things. *shrugs*

Ah well. As I said before, have fun, guys.

Zydrate-Academy's picture
Zydrate-Academy
Hmm, sorry. Habitual style, I

Hmm, sorry. Habitual style, I come from WoW RP where steering the plot IS being the center of attention.
In WoW, an event-starter just starts and ends the event. Any steering involved is kind of taboo, because people don't like their characters being aimed ina linear path. S'why most events are tailored to evolve and change with what the characters do.

I think that's why I'm misunderstanding.

Tevokkia's picture
Tevokkia
^.^

While I started out in chat rooms, most of my roleplaying has been tabletop, where there's someone specific orchestrating the plot and using the backstories, personalities, and actions of all the characters combined to advance it. When there is no one already filling that role, I tend to subconsciously step into it. The method is considerably different online than in a tabletop game, but the result is the same. Online, we might be halfway through a story before anyone realized I was telling one (and a quarter of the way before even I did), but it takes several sessions and I lose patience when people don't show up. XD So with the format you're doing here, I'd be driven crazy, too.

I've never actually played WoW, so I really haven't the vaguest notion how they do things over there.

Tiide's picture

@Kanoka There is no "Confirmation," just add me or Zydrate in game and we'll get yah involved! :)
It'd also by wise to map out your characters personality so you have something work off of, (I don't mean post it, just think it up, Ex. Zydrate is the crazy, questionable sanity type, and Tide is more of the shy, nervous type) you don't have to fill an archetype just an outlook :)

Heres me!

Dossier: Mitsudi (nicknamed Honey)
Rank: Champion
Age: 20 but he looks like an adorable 5 year old. His birthday is on feb 29, so he technically is "5 years old".

Hes an orphan, and ever since he was 9, he was a prodigy in combat. Supposedly lieutenant Feron made him mad once and was in the hospital for weeks after. He is pretty good at hand to hand combat and if disarmed, resorts to besting his opponents up with his bare fists. Hes an expert with swords but is like a bumbling fool when it comes to guns. He is kind to others, but in the clockworks, he almost has no personality: he just cuts everything down with a blank, expressionless look on his face. Of course, thats because his mother was killed by monsters during an expedition into the clockworks... Mitsudi has no sympathy for the beasts of the world beneath.

In a nutshell:
Talkative, joyful, but kind of easy to get mad.
An absolute monster in combat.
Kind and likes to invite even strangers off of the street to come and have some cake with him.

Misc:
he has a scarf that he got from his deceased mother and will be furious if it gets damaged, even slightly.
He reaaally isnt an early riser. Wake him up before 10 am, he will... Sort of destroy the room.
Loves sweets! HE LUVS HIZ SWEETZ OH SO VERY MUCH

What we know about SK so far...

*Spoilers Ahead*

The Crash:

The Skylark was passing the unexplored planet Cradle to another location when the crash occurred. The ship was observing the planet and had completed a partial scan of the surface before the accident occurred. This process was interrupted as the Skylark was unexpectedly pulled towards Cradle, ultimately resulting in its crash on the surface.

The crash critically damaged the ship's core, resulting in an explosion and a loss of part of the ship. The Skylark's escape pods were activated in time to provide a safe landing for a number of Knights that were later directed to the rescue camp by Spiral HQ. With the help of these rescued knights, Spiral HQ is attempting to salvage the battered ship, and believes that the core of the Clockworks, which features an enormous energy signature, may be the key they need to replace the ship's core and repair the Skylark.

Alpha Squad:

They were the first team assigned to explore the clockworks, but somehow Spiral HQ lost contact with them.

Grantz (guardian)

Rulen (technician)

Parma (scout)

Euclid (leader)

Recon Modules from Alpha Squad:

Alpha Squad left modules in the clockworks to provide a record of their journey since they couldn't contact Spiral HQ. The first modules explain how the clockworks work. The last one describes the encounter of the squad against the swarm and how the core
opens and saves them (although it is not known if the squad is alive or not)

A Recording from Parma, Alpha Squad Recon:

We are at the end of the line. Pursued by some kind of terrible darkness we are forced into the unknown. As we neared the Core- I don't know how to describe this really... the shadows came alive and began to attack us. Rulen became enveloped in it and by the time Grantz freed him his body was badly burned. He said it felt like both fire and ice.

And then we could go no further. As I record this, the darkness is nearly upon us, consuming the world we see, the light.

But then the Core, it began to open, filling the place with such a light, such and intense, blinding light. Euclid has made the call; faced with the darkness, we'll enter the core, enter the light.

This will likely be my final recording.

Shadow Lairs:

A Shadow Lair is a special area of the Clockworks, that contains an alternate version of an ordinary Clockworks boss stratum. There are four Shadow Lairs one for each boss of the game.A Shadow Lair expedition does not end with the defeat of the Shadow Lair boss. The party must fight its way through the Unknown Passage — a single, Swarm-infested level, where the only goal is to survive. The party emerges into a safe haven known as the Sanctuary.

Echo Stones:

An Echo Stone is an artifact found in The Sanctuary. It is a remnant of a message, left by an unknown entity. There is one for each boss and they all give hints on the origins of the swarm, who is king Tinkinzar and why the Skylar crashed on Cradle.

* I dream...

Within my dream, I see your legion, falling to this world like burning stars.

You fall with purpose, burning ever brighter as you reach for the heart of this world.
Hold dearly this fire in you, for darkness will consume all the night if its stars begin to fade.

* This world was created to protect me.

Vulnerable in slumber, worlds were drawn to shield me from the darkness.

This world has become my prison.
In his madness, the architect betrayed the pact. Twisting his creation into a game of death, it now devours all who enter its iron embrace.

* As I dreamed, it consumed.

It devoured the knowledge of time... Memories of the dead... The hearts of kings and the souls of their people... Good and evil... It consumed.

It grew stronger, endlessly mirroring itself within the space of my dream. Endlessly mirroring... Expanding... Infinite.

What it was before, it is no more. Neither beast nor god, it is a creation unlike all.
It is... The Swarm.

King Tinkinzar and the Crimson Order:

He is said to be a great ruler and the mechanical genius who is responsible for the vision of the Clockworks. He is never seen by common gremlins, rather his orders are carried out by his fearsome Crimson Order. The members of the Crimson Order are the only Gremlins who are able to see King Tinkinzar. There are nine members within the Crimson Order, the only known one is Seerus, also known as the Warmaster.

The Swarm:

The Swarm is the dreadful darkness that envelops the Shadow Lairs. Its power becomes more intense and tangible as Knights descend into its territory.

Although I copy pasted most of it, I tried to put only the necessary information and rearrange it in a way that everything is connected. Hope this helps to your project.

This seems like quite a good idea, I just hope it doesn't die out like most good ideas I've seen on the web. I would love to participate in this, but technical trouble with our computer has effectively stopped me from playing Spiral Knights (and every other game that I usually play -_-).

4 as a full crew is kind of what I meant, friendo. That's all we CAN do in a group.
(Seriously there should be larger groups available for higher level things.)

Kenhart
Wouldn't they just be called

Wouldn't they just be called Isorans? Since they come from the planet Isora and were at war with the Morai?

Once I level myself up a bit more I'd be interested.

Info

The information Baldhart passed on was divulged during the new intro missions that were introduced with the Razwog update. I'm not sure that they're in the Wiki yet (although it's possible someone has a screenie by now).

@Peoples

@Baldhart:
Spiralians is a previously community-designated name. I am told this originated from the "Clockwork Renegades" RP threads, which caused the term be be accepted even outside of theirs.
Also, there's nothing wrong with balancing RP and gameplay. I myself have passed up RP sessions because I was working on my next RJP run. We're all here to do more than RP, of course :)

@Frostrex:
Either, both? Depends on where the RP is planned, where it starts, where it goes. You can PM anyone who has shown interest in this thread, and see if they're up for roleplaying in certain places.

Which reminds me, I'm going to update the main post, commenting on how one would roleplay "repeat" levels. (IE: I know RJP up, down, and sideways at this point so logically my character would too.)

Dossier #FB-IR-F4773

Name: Kassandira
Aliases: None
Rank: Knight-Elite
Current assignment: Short-range scout

Knight suffers from mild to moderate amnesia as a result of trauma suffered during the Skylark's crash. No obvious signs of other damage suffered. Subject is able to recall own name, place of origin, but lacks cohesive events or relations prior to incident. She seems to be perfectly capable of recalling most events after regaining consciousness in a small refugee camp. Accounts state witness of her asking to be "sent back in" and that she "left them behind", shortly before regaining full consciousness and being directed to Haven. It remains unknown as to what, where or whom she was referring to, as later cross examination has shown that she has no visible recollection of such statements. After arriving in Haven and being reacquainted with basic combat training, Kassandira showed an eagerness to help her fellow knights in action, and a willingness to help in other ways where necessary. Subject has, as stated, shown no sign of disability or handicap in combat ability, and short term memory since the Skylark's crash has shown no loss or gaps. As such, Knight has been approved for short-ranged advanced scouting missions.

ADDENDUM FC-12-409-7: Knight has shown considerable progress from post-crash status. Subject's aptitude for combat and even leadership grow steadily, and memory issues have begun to fade. She is now able to recall sporadic events from life prior to the crash, as well as more details of her youth. Request for promotion to Knight-Elite approved, effective immediately. Knight is permitted access to all 'Second Tier' levels of Clockworks.
