Many look back on their first year upon cradle. Many look back happily, to see how much progress that they've made, While others look back, and see the gremlins, Oh the gremlins. How they hated that dreaded town of theirs, Being used as entertainment, All they could remember, was being thrown in groups to satisfy, the gremlins, Like a sort of elimination process. . . those who lived regretted it, the fights forever stuck in their heads, the echoes of each person's shadow "Please Don't Forget Me" always stuck, in their heads.

Hello, one and all, and welcome to the Proto Wars. This series takes place at the beginning, The knights are just forming the pact between them, and the strangers. What will happen here is more or less what you imagine. A Hunger Games sort of thing, in Spiral Knights.

Well....

I'm not gonna say it's bad, but I don't know what I think........ herm..... of course, I don't like Hunger Games, so...... to some, it might be a good storyline.

I will say it does have potential, but not as something I'd read. Good luck!

P.S. You are a great writer, I'll give you that. The wording is perfect, but it loses the feel of Spiral Knights

Soooo..

Every single Knight killed was William Shatner? I'm just kidding, but yeah, after reading the second Hunger Games, with all those plot holes, I don't like it any more. Good luck though.

Appy?

Name: Kyrie

Age: 15, reduced to ten ages younger, since I wanted the Proto look to be more... what's the word...?

Race: Feral Hybrid of a Knight and Feral :3

Allegiance: Arbitrary

Bio: Left by his parents at age of ten, he resorted only to fend for himself, as food and water, clothes and shelter weren't that hard to find where he lived. One catch though, he didn't have anyone to turn to as he grew. By age of 15, he began to become more successful and happier at his activities, and yet the hole in his heart to have someone to care about is still not filled. Currently, he has no Allegiance with anyone, nor anything. He has admirable strength and speed, which fills the lack of defense and vitality, which results in tiredness.

Appearance: A somewhat Ash Tail pelt for his body and head. He looks part Wolver and part... Knight... O.o

Loadout: Okay... Since, Proto Wars, let's say under the Proto Armor is a somewhat pelt of fur that covers his entire body. Note it does not give any defenses. As for weapons, He can only wield swords, such as the Proto Sword.

Personality: Little aloof and little loner-type

Liminori's picture

Well,

It depends. What fic have you ever seen with a discussion thread, and a (To be added when there are enough people) story thread?
You are accepted, as long as you change the sword arms part, because A: hands are needed eventually, right? B: Proto Wars.

Ah, why not?

App

Name: Kysen

Age: 11

Race: Gremlin

Allegiance: No One.

Personality: While he is quite cruel and inexperienced, he does have more experience then most would expect for his age, and he is loyal to all who have helped him. He is rash, but also level-headed. Along with this personality, when it comes to Darkfang gremlins, he seems quite sad...

Bio: If characters were in black or white for whose side they're on, he'd be grey. His parents died at a young age, due to an experiment of a bio toxin, invented by Warmaster Seerus, Herex, and another member of the crimson order (probably the one running this coliseum). Since then, his life has been fighting and repenting to the gremlins, time and time again. At the time of the Skylarks crash, he was living with gremlins, and believed what they were doing was wrong. For this and other crimes, he was thrown with the knights that were caught.

Appearance: A knocker sized gremlin with tattered garments. He was a member of the Darkfang clan, so he looks like a small Darkfang Thwacker.

Loadout: Thwack Hammer, a number of health caps, and status caps. He carries a Darkfang shield, but rarely uses it (it reminds him too much of his father, because it was his shield).

If he isn't, it's fine... I can remove him if you want... I was figuring he would make it a bit more interesting...

Hooray for danger!

So, the Hunger Games had insanely lethal threats in the arena, right? 'Cause I thought of one.

Name: HAR 9000
Age: N/A
Race: Construct
Allegiance: Gremlins
Personality: None
Appearance: A mechanical arm.

Backstory: Created to help rid the gremlins of the previous batch of knights, (the ones from ghosts in the machine,) HAR stands for Horrifying Arm Robot. Even though they're nothing more than a robotic arm, HARs are super intelligent, super strong, and excellent fighters. They can link together to form frame versions of mecha-knights, though have much more skill than mecha-knights. While the old knights were able to successfully attack and destroy the gremlin factory where the HARs were being built before the threat manifested, the other nine backup factories produced a thousand HARs each before being deemed too likely to rise up against their gremlin overlords.

Robotz! :D

App.

Name: Pringles (LOL) (Name can be changed if needed)
Age: None
Race: Friendly Construct
Allegiance: Spiral Order.
Personality: Basically a robot version of a normal person. Friendly, Tactical, Technologically Smart.

Backstory: Pringles was one of the successful, experimental Mecha knights with advanced parts, improved A.I, and emotion so it does not turn into one of those robots that overcome their creators. (looking at HAR) although it is friendly, its effective in combat, with improved A.I, its smarter, and has better battle tactics, such as weaking that support platform to collapse a 100 pound cargo load of Sun Sliver onto the unfortunate foes. Many of the unfortunate failed experimental mecha knights, often malfunctioned and had to be rebuilt, and very little exploded in a 3 foot radius. All mecha knights came with a standard, Tempered Calibur, and a Great Defender, as well as a Super blaster fire arm. They differed from the original mecha knights that came out of, stale mecha knight kits, and one found in abandoned factorys that require energy to power. The experimental ones had better armor, better targeting systems, and still smarter than the old ones walking into gremlin bombs.

@Khoionet

Erm, this is the PROTO wars... I think you can get away with the A.I. thingy, but not the equipment. I'd think you'd only be able to get proto gear, for the proto wars, but we'll see what Liminori says...... of course, I got a 4* shield just because I said I didn't use it often...

P.S. you could use my little sk gag... my armor has an auto pilot, A.C.E. (Armor Computer Enhancement).... He talks like Garvis..... (Iron Man, btw).

Actually. . .

Do you know what the hunger games (Not that I've read/seen it) would be like? Excruciatingly/painfully hard. Like wearing 2* to a 5* mission.
So the. . . Ahem* Pringles (heh.) Are accepted. Besides, if there are multiple of them, then there's the higher chance that they could be willingly turned to your side. They'll be like a double sided sword, always being at one of the two tips, or the middle.
Anyway, I think I have a twisted sort of role that Ace (yeah, I'm going to pretend that that's it's name) could play. Twisted, evil announcer. Everyone, (Litterally) Watching/surviving the games will hear him. Why? Everyone has a sort of Pip Boy attached to their arm. The winner (or winners, considering that's one of the few ways to move the plot forward) has the choice to detatch it. It's kind of like having a wheatly/glados attatched to your wrist, Giving you advice. (Twist your character's poor minds) Bad advice, naturally. But then again, some go insane, and think that it's helping them survive, and leave it. . . for eternity.

I'm bored. Try the Finder.

I'll give it a shot.

Name: "The Finder," real name unknown
Age: unknown, legends say ~800 years
Gender: female
Abilities: callous skin (~Proto amor & helm), weak teleforce field weave (~Proto shield), a dull bony thorn blade (~Proto sword), weak fireball (~Proto bomb/gun charge), teleport blink (~dash), telekinetic push (~shield bash)
Appearance: charred, calloused skin; long (dark) blond hair; gray, unwashed robes; malnourished figure; beautiful face (though a bit disfigured from charring)
Personality: She never speaks, so she is assumed to be mute, but it doesn't stop her from making guttural sounds like growls when facing an opponent. Despite this, she is an emphatic communicator, sometimes humorously so. Her emotions are mostly unrestrained, though she can control her temper in a pinch. Having recently re-learned her sense of civility, she is not nearly as cruel a huntress as she used to be, but is still legendary worldwide as a brutal killer.

She recently washed up for the Proto Wars.

Biography: since she does not speak and refuses to write, no one has ever learned of her past. Hence, I, the narrator, shall offer a glimpse. She was once Queen of the Valkyries, and at one point became the avatar for the Core itself. But she had become corrupted by the Swarm, and in a valiantly selfless attempt, the Core attempted to purge her by taking all the corruption on itself. Instead, the plan backfired and went in reverse, taking all corruption from the Core and sending it to its avatar. In order to avoid worsening the situation and to allow her to recover, the Core severed the telepathic link, which had the unfortunate side effects of resetting the avatar's memories and physically burning her. She lived as a hunter-gatherer for most of her remaining life, gradually recovering from the Swarm corruption that plagued her. Over time, she has re-learned many elements of civilization, but still has a long way yet to go.

Entering my own App

App: Dagoon.
(What's that? Return to cradle? No. . . *Clip*)
Bio: For a long time, Dagoon has been stranded upon an unnamed planet, but has been marked on the galactic map.
One day, a very, very large ship, which Dagoon later learned to be the skylark, extended a hand (A metaphorical hand), and kindly allowed her to stay aboard the ship. Soon after (2 days), the ship crashed into an unanimous planet. . . She is stranded, just like the other knights, and will have to venture, as so many others will, to get the skylark off of cradle, someday. However, while the crash took place, the pod she was just about to go in closed, so she was thrown a far distance away from all the others.
Inventory: Revolver (An antigua would work exactly the same, but I think we should all have weapons that we made specially.)
An explosive sheath, but no sword in it, or to be found.
Revolver: it has the capacity to be able to hold 9 bullets at once, and does shock and piercing damage. (Explanation: the bullets are salvaged from any metallic wreckage to be found)

Going to the other extreme...

Name: Susan
Age: Old
Race: Knight
Allegiance: Spiral Order

Material specialist: After having worked as a material scientist for years, she can very efficiently turn just about any material into a trap or tool. Bronze bolts are scattered pointy side up, Ecto or Gel Drops lubricate slopes into pits, Flame Souls start campfires, etc. Can uncraft weapons or gear into the materials they're made up of, and can take materials like scales from monsters without hurting them (with some exceptions, such as bushy tails).

Calm: Won't immediately frighten living things into attacking her, like other knights do.

Pacifist: Dislikes the idea of violence, and is much less capable of reacting to problems involving violence. Doesn't carry or even know how to use weapons. Really not thrilled about this contest.

Old: Susan can't hear well, lift heavy stuff, see without her glasses, run very quickly, or do backflips.

Name: Chris
Age: 13
Race: Knight

A spy and assassin who has worked for the Spiral Order since age 10 because of his stealthiness and speed. He's been named the sneakiest knight ever and had snuck past a heavily guarded fortress in a perilous rescue mission before. Like using swords that kill quickly. He is 1.4x faster than the average knight. Also he has a Maskeraith

Arsenal: BTB, GF, FoV, Valiance, Hybrid Vog/Skolver/Snarby (uses different combos every time) BTS, Maskeraith, Elite Slash Modulex2

Sharp instincts: Good Eyesight, hearing, Senses

Assassin: higher damage and speed but lower health

Small size: hard to hit, but takes more knockback.

Ink-Incorporated's picture
Ink-Incorporated

Name: Ink

Age: 21

Race: Emberlightian Gremlin

Allegiance: Emberlightian Order

Personality: He cares more about others rather than himself. He helps out knights, and he's emotional. He's not happy a lot, though, and sometimes he's not fond of his life which is why he cares for others. He is often wise and intelligent, though.

Bio: He was born as a gremlin deep in the Clockworks. His parents were evil, and he never understood why they had to go against knights so other gremlins bullied him physically and verbally. His parents didn't care, and we're glad that he learned his lesson. At least they think he did... He went on a mission with his parents to stop knights from passing through their Battlepod. One knight grabbed an explosive block, and threw it at the gremlins. Ink's parent's were dead, but Ink backed up a little before getting hurt, but he was still damaged. After that incident was born, his legs were no longer functional. The knights were about to kill him, but the gremlin shouted "AUUUUUUUUUUUUH!" which is Gremlin for "Please!". One of the knights actually understood him, and he said "Henhenhuah... AUHEUNS!" which translated into "You're a nasty gremlin! Why should we trust you!?". "AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH!" Using his gremlin tongue he said "I've always wanted to be good. I was physically harassed by other gremlins and my parents didn't even care...". He then got teary eyed. The knight explained Emberlight to him, and they taught him English. They also gave him a wheelchair. He then promised after the large difference of how the knights treated them from his gremlin family, he'd always be on the knights side and forgive them.

Appearance: Unlike other gremlins, he doesn't wear goggles. He wears silver eyeglasses. He wears a lab coat and a basic gremlin thwacker outfit except it has longer pants. He also wears a tie. He also has yellow fur.

Loadout: His disability prevents him from being able to fight on his own so he relies on a constructs kit.

Testing; not part of the official story.

"Can you please bring me my reading glasses, young man?"
"Yes ma'am."
He's a good boy. I'm glad to have him with me in my final days on this planet. If you are reading this, I am most likely dead of old age. For most Valkyries, that occurs shortly before a thousand years of life. At the time of writing, I am 989. I don't look very old, and I'm somewhat glad of it, but it is something of a pain to have young men still hitting on me. Oh well. I suppose I should be flattered.

Anyways, let's get on with this story, shall we? My name is Gwenyvier of the House of Valentine, daughter of Uthur Valentine and adopted daughter of Queen Freyja. This month, I have decided to record my experiences during the Proto Wars. I was 501 years old at the time. The only reason I know is because I did some research, since I did not remember much of my past life at the time. Gosh, has it really been that long? Wow, now I feel really old. But I digress. I voluntarily entered the Proto Wars, driven by a desire for nourishment and recognition. Of course, they were initially frightened by me, but some courageous gremlin decided that I just needed to be cleaned up a bit. Okay, maybe a lot, but what does it matter? I came back looking half-decent, so they let me in.

I still wonder why they didn't kill me on the spot, considering how deranged and dangerous I looked. Perhaps they recognized me?

My character is too overpowered to be allowed in this story. I will, however, volunteer another.

Name: Equinox
Gender: Male
Race: Half-Isoran, Half-Something Else
Personality: A leader, kind, brave, stronghearted
Bio: Born and abandoned to a foster home, then abandoned again at age 5, Equinox has been the one Stranger no one has wanted. He was called a witch for his minor powers over elements, and lived homeless on the street for 10 years, getting food from two mysterious snipes. Now, captured at 15, he is forced to participate in the Proto Wars, handcuffs upon his wrists to keep his magic in check. Armed with no armor, no weapons, he will have to depend on his Snipes.

Liminori, I don't know about hunger games, but there should definitely be a member of the Crimson Order present. Not only is it just logical, but it will play off us Gremlins well (Me and Ink).

P.S. And yes, I know this is a triple post. xD

P.P.S. Also, can I have some info on The Finder and Seatus's character? I've seen glimpses of the roleplays, but not payed enough attention....

Callis-The-Wicked's picture
Callis-The-Wicked
COPY & PASTE!!!

Equinox is a unique character. His father is a mystery, but gives Equinox his power over elements just the same. Equinox's dad has been portrayed as the devil. And the Snipes on Equinox's shoulders are odd as well. The not only take orders and understand, they are able to morph with Equinox into(**Zen mode. Zen is also hinted to be Equinox's past self. While in this form, Equinox can sway the battle violently and be able to cause troops to have mercy or leave no survivors.**) His alter egos are also a major factor in leading people, giving them good intentions, or making them merciless.

(**" "**)=Will not work in this storyline unless escape from the arena.

Thinslayer's picture

@Tedme

You certainly may have more info on The Finder. She made her first appearance in Finder's Keepers, where she is portrayed as being cruel, vicious, powerful, and deadly. The roleplay never finished, but near the place where it currently ends, she is revealed to still have a heart somewhere in there. The Finder is really just a very broken version of Gwenyvier, who first appeared in The Fangs, which Vin here hosted. Gwen became one of the leading characters of the original Return to Cradle, and much of her current personality and lore was developed there. She has appeared in nearly every other roleplay since then. Her appearances in Retribution and After Cradle are non-canon, though her Retribution character was a strong influence on her character in Return to Cradle: Origins.

Her most current (and chronologically earliest) appearance is in Return to Cradle: Origins, which is still going. Her early life is being explored there. The Finder also made a cameo there. If it seems strange that both versions of Gwen are in the same universe, that's because it is strange. You'll have to read the story to figure out what happened. xD

Gwenyvier's official picture was drawn by Nai-Chan, and it depicts her summoning a firebolt in the middle of a freezing snowstorm. It bears almost no resemblance to her original Return to Cradle appearance, with the sole exceptions of the general color scheme and her Crest of Summer.

As a character, she is often dramatic, snarky, warmhearted, impulsive, and emotionally strong. Her teleforce powers vary between roleplays, but she is most commonly seen using firebolts, forcfields, and teleportation.

If this is like the Hunger Games, the people running the show (the gremlins, as I understand) won't actually be doing any of the fighting. They'll leave the captives to have to fight each other. That said, I have an idea how we can have a Crimson Order member fighting:

Name: ______
Race: Zombie

Backstory: The Crimson Order's ex-host of the Proto Wars, fired from the job long ago because he started thinking "Hey, maybe killing everybody isn't so great." A veteran participant of the Proto Wars by now, has failed more times than anyone can count. A little bit crazy, he somehow believes that he might be able to put a stop to the Proto Wars if he wins.

Tedme's picture

@Thinslayer

Hmm, darn, now I want to read something I don't have time for. xD Anyways, great character. Love both images for Gwen.

@Possiblespy ah, maybe. The thing is, zombies are more of beasts, while Gremlins are... varied. It would be rather easy to make a crazy member of the crimson order who runs it, or maybe say that a group of them do, including Warmaster Seerus and Herex... sorry, thinking for my character...

Now then, to get in mood....

Welcome to the Arena! Oh wait, let's start in the Dungeons!

EQUINOX

I'm shoved into my cell. I grab the bars and shake. "Let me out!" I yell, my Snipes croaking after the guard. I sit down and close my eyes. This is what I get for being alive. Capture and imprisonment. Yeah, sounds like me. They at least said if I won I could have as much CE as I wanted, so I guess it isn't a total loss. But I really would've appreciated entering on my own terms. Not my fault I was forced to be a criminal to get money from anywhere. They wouldn't even allow me into the Clockworks. So what happened was I ended up robbing small-time stores in the night, taking only enough for food. What I took from big-time businesses is another story.

So, I had been minding my own business, sitting in my alley and eating an Ecto Drop muffin, when guards paraded down the way. I wondered what was going on, and that's when I was shoved to the ground and knocked out by a chloroform rag. That's also when I woke up down the hall and was brutally dragged and thrown into this cell. Where I began telling you this story.

They must've been scared of me, because they tightened these bracelets to almost completely cut off my circulation. I try burning them off, but nothing happens. I start panicking. I throw my hands at the ground, but to no use. The shackles won't break. I will my Snipes to burn them off, but nothing happens. Damn, this could be bad. I guess they finally trapped me. I sit against the wall, hearing the screams of the crowds above. Vog curse it! Never trust a Gremlin, much less one of the Crimson Order....

Finder's Keepers

A diminutive figure watched the admissions building with interest. She had heard of the rewards offered to the winners, including exotic food, luxurious clothing, and strong shelter. The catch was that one had to hunt your fellow knights. That was something the Finder was very good at. If all went well, it would be an easy path to victory. Why not?

She stepped out into the open, and immediately realized that the first obstacle she had to overcome was everyone's fear of her. She held up her hands and cautiously approached the gremlin sentries. "Halt! State your name and business," barked one of them. Answering would be a problem, since she didn't speak. She made a motion across her throat, hoping they would understand. They didn't. "State your name and business, or prepare to be dispatched!" Just then, another gremlin came out of the building. It cried out, "Stop, stop! This human wants to enter the games, right?" The woman nodded eagerly. "See? That's all. Come inside," the gremlin said, cautiously offering a furry paw to the woman.

Two hours later, she was washed, dressed and ready to fight. The gremlin accompanied her on the elevator to the Gaming Center and began advising her. "All right, first you're going to go to the training hall, where you should brush up on your skills before it's time to enter the arena. You'll meet all your opponents there, so I recommend getting to know them while you can." The woman nodded, and soon the elevator hit bottom. They stepped out into a gray, dreary-looking arena, filled with all manner of instruments, targets, and weaponry. "What's your name, by the way?" the gremlin asked. The woman signaled with her finger that she would like something to write with. The gremlin provided it, and the woman wrote:

Finder

The gremlin gasped and recoiled a little. "You're...you're the Finder!?" it whispered incredulously. The Finder nodded solemnly. The gremlin wiped the sweat from its forehead and muttered, "Well...good luck to you." She nodded and wandered into the swordplay area.

The Boring Cell

After getting thrown in my own cell, I immediately slumped to sleep. It wasn't really uncomfortable, it wasn't comfortable either, I wouldn't know, I just felt like lying on the ground. Then I heard a few noises, probably down the hall, which also meant I wouldn't get my nap. I simply crawled to a wall and sat upright, and enjoyed the boring cell.

I grab my Proto Sword out, and went on to clean it. It was reduced to almost shattering, because of earlier... difficulties. Them furballs got me again.

I felt the need to whistle a tune, so I did. But instead of whistling, what came out were howls. "Awroooooooooooooooo!"

I put back my sword, and it was getting a little hot. I took off my helmet, a Spiral Crescent Helm, and detached the armor locks of my Flak Jacket as I took it off. My pelt of fur was somewhat tamed now, and I felt a little cooler.

I glanced at the bars, some Gremlins passing by. I watched them pass me, I heard their squeaks of laughter.

Disgusting.

Meeting the prisoners

The Finder soon noticed that most of her fellow contestants were still locked up in their cells. The first one to catch her eye was "easy prey." Or, rather, a human-wolver hybrid. Hybrid beings tended to be very awkward, very easy to kill, and very delicious. There were, of course, exceptions, but this one was not likely to be among them. She walked up to his cell and examined him. She absent-mindedly drew her thorn blade and twirled it skillfully for a little bit, just to scare him.

Susan sat at the back of her cell, working on carving a rocky core out of the side of her cell. She knew that it wouldn't do any good; there wasn't any way for here to use it to escape, and the gremlins would hardly let her go if she merely threatened to throw a rock at one of them. Besides, she wouldn't be able to actually throw it with enough force to really hurt anyone, even if she had wanted to. It just felt nice to have a material, even if it didn't help.

She had thought she had heard a howl a while ago, and it had reminded her of the wolvers that had attacked the squad of geoknights she had been with. She sighed, wishing once again that the rescue team hadn't gotten so preoccupied cutting down bushes in search of crowns, and went back to carving.

Huh? Hungry. Foodie. Nao.

My stomach grumbled. Shut up, its only been three hours. Yet my brain agreed with my stomach.

"Urrrrrr..." I mumbled, and at the corner of my eye I noticed a woman, twirling a somewhat long, sharp and bony thorn. I've seen people wielding ones with yellow tips, some with red. Although the stick itself wasn't really that threatening, the way she twirled it, was. I shake a little, then she smiled slyly.

The gremlins let everyone out of their cells to let them train before the game. When Kyrie's cell was opened, the Finder grinned menacingly, baring all her razor-sharp teeth. "I recommend making friends," a gremlin recommended. She turned to see a Gremlin Mender sitting behind her. "The name's Willow. You'll need all the help you can get, because nobody outside the games can give you any." The Finder turned back to Kyrie and extended her hand to shake.

Chris walked into the room

Chris walked into the room after the Gremlins walked in. Inside he saw many other captives. He thought of a strategy to win the Proto Wars. He trained and cut a Training Bag to pieces. He was about to ask a few other to help him in the Proto Wars, when suddenly, a Gremlin went inside and called everyone out...

Equinox's Secret

I walk toward the training area, taking no note of anyone around me. As I step into the training area, I am instantly over by the good Striker line, testing their swings, shredding a couple cardboard cutouts. As soon as I catch no one looking, I test my Snipes on a dummy. They bullet through the head and heart of him.

I look at my hand, and find I could use my hands as weapons when I see I can change a sigil symbol on the palms of them. I touch the dummy, and electrocute him. This is when I have a great idea, and walk over to the wires and technology station, and grab a couple of uncover wires. These could be good weapons...

( Dagoon
Dagoon looked around the clearing. There was no way up, and the elevator was the only way out.
Reaching her destination, she was rudely greeted by a group of gremlin guards.
"Hello, Human filth, Welcome. Join the games, or leave!"
"The games?"
"You hunt down your fellow knights. . ."
"Hmm. Interesting. I will join, on one condition. . ."
"That being, Filth?"
"That the winner or winners may choose who lives in the end. They may pick only three."
"We. . . will take that into consideration, human. This way please."

( Agnus )
"Sir, one of the humans have asked for an additional rule! They wish that the winner may chose who lives afterward!"
"Hmm. . . In the end, I will only allow for two to be revived."
"Yes master."
"Also. . . There will be two matches at once."
"Understood master."

I'm guessing you're waiting for me to make my post as Dagoon?
Fine. Tomorrow.
