Barrus is drunk

OOC: Thanks, FG. Saved me from a writers block. :D

IC: Barrus felt as if a warmth suddenly spreaded from his body, starting from his toes. He shuddered, and embraced the warmth, and opened his eyes. He was healed, and Vaelyn was too, with tiny blue particles dancing around. Vaelyn was looking at a stranger, killing Devillites left and right with his/her Flourish.
Barrus leaned towards Vaelyn and kissed her, and asked, "Who's that guy?"

The noises of River makes Merlot stop, And turn around. She takes a quick glance at his face, and steps on the elevator with him.
The hum of the elevator is enough for a slight distraction from the uneasy silence. . . But when the elevator stops? Whole different situation.
The smell of charred cobblestone and flesh brings to Merlot and River's attention the burning/burnt knight.
"Shit, day one and someone's already dying...?"
--
OOC: Since nobody noticed who I am, and I have every right to ninja my way into the story, I shall explain.
Merlot is a female knight who was sucked through a wormhole leading from the crash of the skylark, to cradle, and in the process (Magical phenomenons, whoo!) gained the ability to stop time.
Nobody objected, after all, I am wearing proto armor.

So, Merlot says as she swigs some wine, When do we all die?

Looking around the freshly ashed area, not a sign of life in front of her. It was a satisfying yet disheartening sight, satisfying because she did her job and it felt so good it made her feel so alive. Yet at the same time it was disheartening because of the minor depression and feel of the rush slowly dissipating, a good thing she had a grip on reality, or at least it seemed as such.

Breaking the breach on the Revolver and dumping the empty shells, Blesse watched as her shield fell. The protective flames slowly dying out. "Ma'am, I need something to eat, also your a fifty Flame Units." Hopping back into the trench Blesse finished loading the last of her bullets into the revolver as she came upon the sight of Barrus and Vaelyn.

Really? Did he really let himself get shot...Bullheaded mother...

Blesse thought to herself as she placed the gun away and put out the Pilot light. Making her way to the closest resupply Blesse undid the flame tank and looked around for any of the flame liquid which made her feel so good. At the same time feeding a little to her pet since Xeon liked it more and always tried to eat her extra.

While looking for some fuel, Blesse found a quick loader, or six rounds, of armor penitation rounds that seemed to fit her weapon well. Taking the rounds she hid them inside her pack as well as taking around twelve normal rounds. This meant she had Twenty four bullets to work with total should the event arise.

This is why I am glad I don't have fancy armor, I don't need it, light weight and being able to deal death quickly, that's what I like.

Vaelyn's a professional. No kissing.

Vaelyn watched the stranger take care of the remaining foes. I do prefer that you do not evade me. The information you may have wil determine whether or not we can survive this ordeal. Her words echoed in Vaelyn's mind; who was this person, and what exactly did she know about the situation? She decided to stick around and wait for the stranger to return.

She turned to Barrus just as he rose up to kiss her. For a fleeting moment, a combination of shock, delight, and shame coursed through her, quickly replaced by anger. She gave him a sharp backhanded slap, got up and motioned for the medical officer to approach. "I can't stand this anymore. I can't have him making a fool out of me in front of my men. Take care of him." Vaelyn patted his shoulder and wandered off toward the Underworld portal.

A long groan escaped her throat as she slumped against the nearby wall. And here I was thinking Barrus was a gentleman. What the frack, Vaelyn? What the frack were you thinking? Why did you have a crush on this numbskull? Freaking Lieutenants think they own the place. I bet he thinks I'm his playtoy because I'm a woman. I'm not a comrade to him. I'm not a soldier. I'm not even his frikkin' equal. I'm just another chick for him to flirt with.

"Tch."

She curled up and wrapped her arms around her knees, staring off in the direction of the portal. As the minutes slowly crawled by, a crazy thought occurred to her: what if she were to explore it? Visiting the Underworld was usually an unpleasant prospect for human beings, but what if...what if they visited voluntarily? If the environment was a hostile one, they might not survive the journey. She would be responsible for that. So she shook the thought out of her head and considered her remaining option:

Return to Depth 29.

She had given the order only an hour or so earlier, and she hadn't told anyone why she issued it. For good reason, too - it was unlikely to go over well with her subordinates. They would have to trust her judgment on this one. They hadn't experienced the things she had; she saw the truth for what it was. She had the privilege of holding their only hope for survival in her hands.

Which, unfortunately, turned her thoughts back to that despicable man Barrus. For all the importance she held, he still treated her like a plaything to be flirted with. She felt ashamed for feeling elated that he rushed to find her, and even more ashamed for being delighted, even for a moment, that he kissed her.

More fighting.

As she carved a bloody path towards the summoning runes, the person was still rather worried about her previous assumptions she made. What if the Core was just seeding mass panic to the inhabitants of Cradle, making them vulnerable to attack?

Moreover, why weren't these Fiends leaving? Cradle was clearly a loss cause now that the main catalyst was all but absent.

Then there was Ellie, and then there was the charred body...

This was possibly more than she could handle.

~~~
By the time she had written a ring of counter-runes around the first summoning rune, she snapped back to reality as a keyboard was broken over her back, to which she responded with a swift slice across the offender's jugular.
She never really took to mind the written language back when she was learning, but back then, she really never needed to.
It was simply because it was her vernacular, the language she had grown up speaking, writing, reading, knowing. Business jargon, medical syntax, scientific technobabble...all of it she had worked with before, but she never really remembered where or when.
She grew up in Haven, for goodness' sakes.
Well...for seven years, she remembered. The rest before was all white.
By the time she had recalled this strange fact, she had already finished the fourth circle of counter-runes. Two more.
Sorry?
Barrus pushed away the medical officer, and struggled to get on his feet. He limped to where Vaelyn was sitting, her face in her knees. Barrus walked over, and took off his helmet, revealing a battle scarred face, and brown hair. He walked over, "Look, Vaelyn. I'm sorry, alright? It's just..... when I saw you there, the relief didn't register with me. I was in Haven when I heard the distress call, and..... I was scared, alright. I was scared for you. I thought you had died. And you suddenly appear here, and I was scared that.... I didn't think you were that strong. Not to be sexist or anything, alright? It's just..... I thought you had died, or seriously injured. I thought I would never see you again. And I..... had..... have feelings for you....and.... I'm sorry, alright. I like you very much, and I just.... didn't know what to do! And...." Barrus looks at Vaelyn, who still haven't looked up. Barrus wiped away some tears he had, threatening to spill over, "You know, whatever. I'm very sorry, but if you don't forgive me.... that's alright. I know I was wrong. I'll just..... go away now." Barrus walked away, and put his helmet back on, silent tears streaming.
OOC: Barrus is a weakling. But YOU, just broke his heart, Thin. Huehuehuheuhuehuehuehuehuehueheuheuheuheuhuehuehuehuehuehue. (Evil laugh is long.)
Who broke whose heart?
OOC:
Put yourself in Vaelyn's position. Being squared away at the Core Terminal, she rarely got the chance to interact with the people further up. Her fondest memories were of Barrus, whom she greatly admired for his gentlemanly manners and chivalrous conduct. She's a sweet, kindhearted girl who dreamed of being swept off her feet by such a man, and really wanted to marry someday.
But at the same time, she takes her job as Lieutenant very seriously. She is first and foremost a professional soldier, and a woman second. Whatever her personal aspirations are, they take a backseat to her leadership role. The Spiral Knights are her comrades in arms, and they are like brothers and sisters to her. The idea that they may never get to go home grieves her, and so she gives her all to this job.
So imagine, then, how she felt when Barrus first pointed a gun to her head out of distrust, put pressure on her overloaded medical team by getting himself wounded, and sapped her dignity by spontaneously kissing her.
To Vaelyn, Barrus looks like a useless chump.
Hardly the man she imagined him to be.
Blesse stood in front of Barrus, her helm still on but the disappointment in her stance was clear as day. Xeon, who was still holding onto his master's shoulder, gave the same glace of dissapointment.
Numbskull. Blesse thought.
Still smelling of ash Blesse made her way to Vaelyn and saluted before relaxing and looking around with a muted grumble.
Blesse & Vaelyn
Vaelyn saluted Blesse in return. A grim smile formed on her face. "You did a nice job out there, Blesse. You've got an interesting style. Where'd you get your hands on an incinerator? I've been wondering about the possibility of using our enemies' weapons against them ever since the disappearance of mist energy. How is it working for you?"
Poor Barrus. Poor Vaelyn!
Barrus did his best to garner her sympathy. "Look, Vaelyn. I'm sorry, alright? It's just...when I saw you there, the relief didn't register with me. I was in Haven when I heard the distress call, and...I was scared, alright. I was scared for you. I thought you had died. And you suddenly appear here, and I was scared that...I didn't think you were that strong. Not to be sexist or anything, alright? It's just...I thought you had died, or seriously injured. I'm very sorry, but if you don't forgive me...that's alright. I know I was wrong. I'll just...go away now."
Instead of garnering sympathy, he got only irritation. Vaelyn just about had it with Barrus' excuses. She stood up, grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him around to face her. Her enraged expression was muted to the best of her ability, but it still seeped through in her slightly pursed lips and narrowed eyes. "Okay Barrus, let me set things straight. I am a soldier. I am a Lieutenant in the Spiral Order. You, sir, are also a Lieutenant. May I...strongly...advise that you begin acting like one and treat me in a manner more befitting my rank?" She tilted her head and shot him an intense quizzical glare.
She pushed him away with a disgusted sigh and crossed her arms. She really wanted to say something to make him feel bad, but her better judgment took over. If he ever figured out how to become a proper gentleman, let alone a proper Lieutenant, it was vital that she avoid burning her bridges with him. So she added, "Look, it's not that I don't get what you're trying to say. Maybe we just got off on the wrong foot. Can I expect your cooperation in the near future, unhindered by any further such altercations?"
Done.
"Can I ask the same of you?"
A polyphonic voice chirped eerily close to Vaelyn's ear. The siege was done, with unrealistic quickness, one might add. After giving Vaelyn some time to regather, the person continues.
"I've little time to waste, but you'll find my causes run parallel to yours. As potentially one of the most vulnerable, and paradoxically the most powerful of all inhabitants of Cradle, a responsibility has been placed upon me to ensure your survival for the benefit of everything else on this planet.
And as you have realized, your survival is jeopardized to become nothing more than targets for the Core itself. For what reasons, one may ask, I will withhold until I gather solid evidence to support my conjecture.
Solid evidence that you, Lieutenant, can and will provide for me. In private."
She finished her last sentence with a forceful grip to her wrist. (Or at least an attempt).
"Pardon me for making null your current wish to be treated with equality, but I am hard-pressed for time. My lack of authority is justified only by the need of urgency...the need of truth."
The person leans forward, still hiding her face behind the shadows of the hood. She then whispers :
"Your truth, as the overseer of all operations pertaining to the Core sanctioned by the Spiral Order. You, so far, are the only one I can trust."
The person flicks her thumb at the hand-guard of her blade, allowing light to cascade and reflect off of the base of the blade. She's looking at Barrus, then the various other members of the detachment.
Tools of Destruction.
Looking at Xeon then back to the Vaelyn who seemed to be in a bit of a tissy with Barrus, the firebug decided it was best to let the two just get it off their chest what ever it was that was bugging them. All the while Blesse did her best to resist the urge to tell Barrus off, after all he was being rather bull-headed and not thinking clearly. As someone in his current state he should be thinking about defending the Knights in haven not so much being a rather forward aggressor, that was Desna's job.
Once they looked done Xeon spoke on behalf of Blesse. "What you see before you is a heavily modified incinerator unit. We call it the Ignis MK.2. We removed the problem of leaky pipes with the stronger hoses used in the Bio-tech labs as well as a stronger mixture of chemicals flames. It is able to take three custom made fuels designed to do different elemental effects much like the vials we find in the clockworks, where the fire liquid and good old fashioned naplom being the basic.
"This also comes with a safety device integrated into it in the case that power goes out. A trigger added to the side of the barrel of the gauntlet the device is integrated into. The tank it's self is lighter reducing it's over all weight allowing for it to be bigger and holding more liquid. As it stands it's just big enough to cover the back as it stands and straps on with a five point strap with support for the lower back.
"In the pouches to the side is the rest three different barrel's. The first is the main one which is currently attached; mid range with a large spreed. The second is a smaller barrel with a more condensed release rate meaning anything that get's hit will be blasted with a extremely considerate version of what ever type of flame is being used. The last one is much wider and for an extremely short range, but wider meaning at close range or in a large group the barrel can ignite and burn many targets, of course it's not very good in a one on one fight."
Blesse held up the two barrel's showing them off while Xeon spoke. Once he was done the firebug waited to see what Vaelyn would say.
Crafting some defense
Alone by a workbench, Kale held up a chest plate and tried to think of anything that could go wrong. With the added weight of the Ironmight plating, hopefully it would function as it did before. He slipped it on and booted it up.
let's try an arm.
He lifted one arm, it felt lighter then the dead weight before at the burn site. Success!
He tried the other limbs, with the same degree of success. Ecstatic, Kale looked around for his axe. It was laying by the workbench, he grasped it and felt along the handle. He let out a sigh when he remembered that there was no way into the weapon without popping it open.
Looking around at the knights milling around, Kale grabbed a knight who looked like a technician.
"Hey, think you could help me out with something?"
OOC: Btw Thin, I want to quit this RP.
This decision doesn't have anything to do with this RP, or anyone here. Don't misunderstand, alright. You guys will always be my friends, alright? You guys are actually the best thing that had happened to me. This RP has helped me understand and improve a lot. I'll thank everyone here. Thin, you were and are one of my best friends. You are really nice to me, and you are a great friend. Others, I don't know you much, but I'll remember all of you. And thanks for supporting me, and stuff. Yeah, thanks.
And guys, remember. This decision doesn't have anything to do with this RP, or you guys. It's a decision I made, because of my life. My real life. I don't really want to talk about it. It's just sad, really. So... cya guys. I might watch this thread for a time, but I will not participate in it anymore.
I'm giving Barrus back to Thin.
"What do you mean, First day? We have been here for FIVE damn years! And it's not just one person, but half the Isoran kind in cradle, is DEAD."
Oh. That did NOT feel good.
Not only had Merlot been forced to remember the crash, Something was very wrong. Five years? The crash was just yester. . .
"Who are you? How did you manage to sneak up to me? .....Wait a minute, did you take the elevator with me?"
Merlot responded with only silence, to hear that about half of what remained of Isora was gone.
". . . Alright, question man. Since you have nothing better to do than ask tons upon tons of questions, I shall answer."
Merlot gives River a look of distaste.
"My name is Merlot. What do I damn well mean by first day? I can clearly remember the crash that happened TODAY, People screaming, running for their lives, doing everything that broke crash protocol, and worse yet, people who did not give a single damn that the ship was crashing- I didn't like them much anyway, The shrapnel and debris that flew off the ship- and when there was no air, the knights flew out of the ship, helpless. Some knights were impaled, crushed, suffocated. One third of Isora was already gone when we got off that ship. Is that enough proof to you, that I was THERE, that You forced me to relive what happened only FOUR HOURS AGO? I'm sorry, but it might be possible that me and my pod were teleported from the ship, and to Cradle, All but skipping FIVE DAMN YEARS? Whatever.
Second, How did I sneak up to you? I'll give you a demonstration."
Merlot stops time, and slaps River.
"So worth it."
Time resumes.
OOC: Sure, you can be Barrus. Barrus has a crush on Vaelyn, wants to gather the knights and protect them, and is something of a cavalier compared to Feron or Vaelyn, who are sticklers for going by the book.
"Yes, I will I-" Barrus stopped himself from apologizing again, it would only infuriate her.
Barrus studied Vaelyn and sighed, he'd screwed up. She was correct about starting over, and he needed to do the same. And now it was time to make some progress about this core creature.
He walked to a squad captain with his insignia, "I need some intel. I'm going to need you to get some information from any of the knights from Vaelyn's squad, I'm going to ask the lieutenant myself." He sighed to himself and continued, "since I've arrived, I haven't gotten any information about what's happened.. I need to change that."
Without waiting for an answer he turned and strode away, he needed to focus on the problem and not let his personal desires get in the way.
"Ha! It works!" Kale pushed the activation button and watched in delight as his axe handle telescoped into the two handed version he'd used at the battle, then pushed the button again to change it to the one handed weapon he'd failed to activate.
"There really wasn't anything wrong with it," the technician interrupted Kale's small celebration, "It just needed a new power source."
"I should look into some of the circuitry, thanks for your help."
Kale hooked his axe onto his back and looked around for his new squad, now that he was all ready to go.
Update
OOC:
If you're all wondering what's taking me so long to produce a story post, I'll fill you in on my to-do list.
1. Bring Hexzyle back into the game somehow. Adapt to the loss of Edolas.
2. Bring Liminori back into the game. His posts have few hooks to work from, but I'm tired of seeing him get left out of game after game after game. I can't stand seeing that happen to my friend.
3. Figure out what the heck Spirals-Ore's last story post about. I don't want to leave him behind.
4. Find an effective way to reply to Feline-Grenadier that flows with the current posting order. It's harder than it looks.
5. Make Vaelyn reply to Blesse in an intelligent, in-character way. If I were her, Blesse's description would have gone over my head, but Vaelyn's a different sort of person.
6. Have Vaelyn reply to Colray's Barrus in a way that doesn't conflict with her replies to F-G's character or Blesse.
@Spirals-Ore
Everything in this post is a re-quote from Spirals-Ore's post. My notes will be marked in brackets and/or italicized.
"What the hell ? That is NOT natural at all !" River touches his cheek [Who slapped River? The context is utterly lost on me. Also, I assume River touched his own cheek, as it's an appropriate physical motion for someone expressing shock.]
"How the heck do you even move THAT fast ? I can't even hear steps !" [Who is speaking here? The fact that it's separated from the prior quote suggests that it's someone else's reply, but experience tells me that I can't count on everyone to use separations in that way.]
River sighs, why do he even bother being slapped ? He has experience worse. [The phrase "why does he even bother" tells the reader that the subject is actively doing something with no useful benefit. "Being slapped," however, is not an action that the subject can perform, and thus makes no grammatical sense. I think what Spirals-Ore means to convey is closer to, "Being slapped is no big deal. He's experienced worse."]
"Look... Merlot, the crash happened long ago. I don't know what happened to you, but everyone here has experienced the crash too... LONG ago. But the thing that revolves in this planet ? No, its even worse..." River spontanly [spontaneously] touches his left arm [By "the thing that revolves" I assume you mean the Clockworks.]
"I will breif [brief] you a little since...'Cough'... I think you have amnesia.." The blind seems confused [Blind? You mean blind person? I didn't know Merlot was blind.]
"There is a being inside the depth of this planet-eater. We call it The core. It provides us energy, who became essential in our five years. Inside this planet, which we call cradle, There is a ton of machinery. This is called cloackworks [Clockworks], lots of diffrent [different] species can be encountered in each depths [depth, singular]. Now we are at depth 22 and heading straight to 29, the core resting place. However our mission is to go to the unknown passage for an unknown reason and an unknown danger. Inisde this unknown passage there is an unknown entity called the swarm [oxymoron. If you know what it is and call it the Swarm, then it's no longer an unknown entity]. They are black and can appear as everything [not really. There are some species it doesn't form into for undisclosed reasons]. When it touch [touches] you.... you are as good as dead, or so i heard. The core has leaved [replace "has leaved" with "left"] its house, causing energy around the planet to be gone. We are here to find out why." River gives a rather long explanation [Merlot is probably an average Spiral Knight. He/she is most likely aware of the basic information about Cradle & the Clockworks, so you can leave out the first half of the explanation.]
"Oh and... try not to use super powers here... If you have met HIM" He grins, again touching his left arm. [Nobody has any super powers. Yet. Also, the sentence suggests that this "HIM" is exceptionally powerful, in a way that can potentially influence the plot; if so, it's mandatory that I be informed about this before he appears.]
The runes glimmer a bit... [Ideally, there should be a useful reason for this other than "for emphasis." Runic markings are the kind of details that are important to me.]
"If you have amnesia after the test its natural though, just try and remember what happens" Thr blind crosses his arm
( If you want misunderstanding i will give DOUBLE the fun. Mwahahahahaha )) [Be careful with this. I've loosened the story protections on player characters for this game.]
OOC: Quick recap of River and
OOC: Quick recap of River and Merlot's stuff.
Merlot uses timestopping to get onto the elevator.
River overhears Merlot muttering something about day one, and bombards her with questions.
Merlot initiates arrogant remarks and timestops, slapping River.
River gives a brief explanation of stuff to Merlot, and Spirals is messing up the grammar everywhere. No offense.
---
"Him? Actually, nevermind. All I know is that nothing has happened to me between the time the Skylark blew up to the time I arrived at the planet.
So chances are, Nobody's going to care who I am. Whatever it is, I sure as heck wouldn't call it a Superpower." Merlot grabs at River's scruff, and says "Now, as you said, We're going to Depth 29? I can get us there in about one minute. Or would you like to take a pit stop somewhere between?"
---
Edit: Please tell me I'm not overstepping my boundaries?
Time is stopped.
Or would you prefer if I were forcefully stopped somewhere between?
A few further replies
OOC:
I resume studies in force today, so my posting may be further delayed. I'm still quite interested in continuing, however, so I should have something up later today.
@Spirals-Ore: Had Barrus pulled the trigger on Vaelyn, I would have let her die. That's kind of what I mean by "loosened story protections" on the characters.
@Liminori: Regarding Merlot's superpower, she may acquire one later in the story, but knights shouldn't have any by default.
@Topogaming: Sure, we can talk through Skype. I'll send you my Skype ID via email.
@Edolas: Depth 19 is a standard Wolver Den, and Depth 22 is a standard Clockwork Tunnel. All other levels are up to you to describe.
Gettin' me bearings.
OOC:
The mission me & hex were on was supposed to be set for level 3.
But since the elevator got forced to just charge downward, where would it put us?
Assume the last stop. Would that be Moorcroft Manor? Or the Terminal at 4? or Lower?
The elevators in the Clockworks depths are physically incapable of taking their occupants to any levels other than the next one or prior one. The Arcade elevators travel to either the first depth or to one of the other two hubs. So if your elevator is set for depth 3, then it will take you to any level on depth 3 (because remember, this is the Clockworks; there are multiple levels on depth 3). It cannot take you to depth 4 or 8.
Touchdown...
Varien stepped off onto the ground of the 3rd level, a metallic sound echoing throughout the open area around the pathway. The sound of clanking could be heard off in the distance as salvaged metal and junk was scavenged and collected for use as something else. The level they had touched down onto was a deconstruction level, and an elevator whirling down to a sudden impact must have drawn attention from at least one or two gremlins.
The Vanguard rolled his shoulder again, as he turned to notice the barrier was down. It wasn't suprising that energy reliant tech was also malfunctioning and ceasing to work if all their gear had gone off. More alarming was the fact that they didnt have the luxury of safety down here. Varien began to slowly pace further down the walkway, the metallic echo occuring every step.
Eve was trying to reconnect to the channel, ever since the energy cut. The comms were powered by energy, but if she could re-direct the dynamo's power that she was running on to make a jury-rigged power source for it...
She didn't tell Varien the idea. He wouldn't like her risking her own livelihood for the good of the mission. Only the words "Im working on it" came out whenever Varien asked about a status update through his scarf.
Finally!
Reference, @F-G
Once Blesse finished speaking, the stranger took Vaelyn by the arm and whispered something in her ear.
"Excuse me, Blesse. This young woman needs to speak with me in private about something."
Vaelyn stepped over to the observer and motioned for her to follow. She walked over to a secluded corner of the room and folded her hands behind her back. "Okay, I suppose I can afford to tell you. Shortly after I fell into the Core area, I crawled into the Unknown Passage more or less by accident. As I laid there, a strange Void Form the likes of which I'd never seen before attended to my wounds. The Form is best described as a floating Swarm Source with thin ethereal tentacles. It scolded me harshly in a language I couldn't understand and eventually let me go. I'm inclined to believe that perhaps the Swarm is not our natural enemy as we first thought. If we could learn its motives for harming us, we may be able to acquire its assistance, and maybe even go home."
She leaned against the wall and gazed over at her army. "But we can't do much of anything until we get that Core thing under control. I'm not sure if the Swarm can fight it; I mean, come on, they've been at each others' throats for years, and if the Swarm hasn't beaten the Core yet, then I doubt things will get any better from here on out. We'll need to find another way. And frankly, I don't have any ideas at the moment." She returned her gaze to the young woman, tilting her head a little in curiosity. "What do you plan to do with this information?"
__________
Meanwhile, Cecilia approached Barrus and snapped a crisp salute. "Sir. It's good to see you up and about again. I don't mean to pry, but...what are your plans for the near future? With all due respect, that Core monster isn't exactly sitting around waiting for us."
Barrus nodded, "right now, I need to get any info I can on this Core monster. Once I have more knowledge I can formulate a plan to take it down. I was just going to ask Vaelyn about her experience- at least, if I can."
A thought occurred to him, "I need you to find out where Feron is, I haven't heard from him since the creature contacted us. Right now I think we could use some better leadership."
Nobody said no, and as it stands, Time stopping isn't exactly useful for breaking the rules.
Ex: Knowing things you should not know (The only exception I can think of is if you spend an entire week inside of 'stasis'.
Destroying things you should not be able to? Can't really do that with a proto sword, I'm afraid.
And the whole knowing things you shouldn't? This is Merlot's first day on Cradle; No clue what the core, the swarm, the clockworks, Or even about her own time stopping powers. The only thing she knows is that some poor shmuck called Vaeyln is the center of attention.
Feeling a little dejected Xeon was about to says something before Blesse reached up and started to scratch his scaly chin.
Shh now, there will be plenty of time for us to talk with the Lieutenant when she is free. As for right now we should be more worried about what the underworlder's will send at us next. Since they saw fire take out a good number of their people it will be save to assume they will send in Fire-branders. I am going to take the moment to switch the take over to the Ice-Liquid while we wait for order's.
As she scratched Xeon's head, the firebug went ahead and started changing the liquid with the auto-switch. It was a good thing she re-energized her helm with the Crystal Energy stuff, it made working with the Incinerator unit a lot easier.
Disappointment.
"...return to Haven...and protect what's left, if anyone is still alive up above.
This information...my predecessor already knew about this. He had a great deal of proficiency in dealing with this entity, to be fully forthcoming. I had only just re-discovered his work recently, but if the Swarm refuses to fight against you...
...I can say that you may have gained a new ally in your struggle against the Core. You, and every other Knight on this planet. Consider yourself the official discoverer of the Swarm's true nature. However, we are not any closer to pursuing the Core...yet.
I also have a few questions. On my way en-route to your location, I know of a Knight...two, actually, who have recently died. One goes by the name of "Ellie Barnsworth"; the rest of her known allies are from the guild Void Echo. The other...is unrecognizable, but Barrus was the highest authority (I presume) who had been present. With your permission, I would like a word with one of your men named Cecilia. She seems to be involved in the burning of a Knight's body, an objectionable measure taken only when there are reasons...clandestine reasons, I might add, for doing so. As I recall, the standard protocol for the retrieval of the deceased was to contact a team to take the body for identification and the preservation and re-use of equipment. There would be no justifiable reason to damage the body beyond recognition unless 1) the very nature of the deceased's activities required anonymity to avoid public outcry or 2) the deceased was meant to be erased.
Either way, this tertiary investigation is one that can be solved within the hour if your subordinates are willing to answer my questions.
For more clarification, if I can recall correctly, the second corpse was found in Depth 19. I assume it belongs to someone by the name of Logan Crowley, Ricky Richardo, or Preston Willis, all who were her subordinates; Logan was the one who had told her to come down to Depth 19, making him the most possible victim. Do you recognize any of these names?"
Eheh, about that...
Vaelyn rolled her eyes and scoffed, but from the way she threw back her head and winced, it was more of a sorrowful scoff. "The corpse you found in Depth 19 was probably Grell Bancher. The Core somehow took control of his body, turning his hair white and his skin pale, and it made him attack me. I was forced to kill him. He was a fine soldier. Killing him...left an impression on me, to say the least."
She closed her eyes and rested her head against the wall. "Ellie Barnsworth, though, was another story. She kidnapped me shortly after I began my return trip toward Haven, and she kept going on about how 'union with the Core' would 'be their salvation'. Her buddy visited briefly and then left her to torture me at her leisure. I managed to get myself free and fought her; apparently, she's one of the few Spiral mages in existence, unfortunately on the wrong side of things. I was forced to kill her too. I'm guessing you saw my little 'message,' right? The sword in her head?"
Vaelyn chuckled softly and continued. "Anyway. I don't know why Cecilia would burn the body. If anyone's stupid enough to have it burned, it would be Barrus. Besides, only Blesse has the capability to burn things, and unless Blesse acted alone, only Barrus has the authority to give her such an order. Cecilia's a coward; she doesn't have the guts to do that."
__________
Speaking of Cecilia...
Barrus nodded and replied to Cecilia, "Right now, I need to get any info I can on this Core monster. Once I have more knowledge I can formulate a plan to take it down. I was just going to ask Vaelyn about her experience- at least, if I can." He paused, then added. "I need you to find out where Feron is; I haven't heard from him since the creature contacted us. Right now I think we could use some better leadership."
Cecilia nodded and saluted. "Yes sir. I'll get on it right away sir. With the mist energy gone, I don't think the com system will be working very well. Chances are, Feron's still at Haven, and with the Core on the loose, I doubt he'll move into the Clockworks. I'll check up on him and report back to you immediately."
Barrus debated with himself to wait or go talk to Vaelyn right now. She could still be sore, but waiting later wouldn't get him info quicker. While he was deciding, he noticed the young guardian who volunteered. He seemed to have his armor back.
"Kale is it?"
Kale stopped, "Yes... Sir?"
His tone was neutral, but not without contempt hidden underneath. Barrus suppressed a sigh, he needed to really start over, be a better example.
"I'm going to need you to ask Vaelyn something..."
* * *
Kale couldn't find Cecilia anywhere, but she spotted Blessed working on her weaponry. Barrus told him to ask Vaelyn what happens at the terminal. She seemed busy right now, he'd wait till she was done talking with the other person. In the meantime, he walked up to Blesse.
"Hey, I don't thinking ever got your name. My name's Kale."
Plot Twist #2
((Before anyone asks, don't worry about locational discrepancies. I don't give a hoot about that.))
Before the strange observer could fully close the underworld portal, it suddenly burst wide open. A massive graviton vortex appeared in the center and began dragging anyone and everyone into it. Metal parts broke free from the floor and floated away; guns, armor parts, and fractured bodies got lifted up and thrown to the center. Vaelyn, Cecilia, and everyone else in her 48-man army grabbed hold of anything they could, but to little avail. One by one, everyone got dragged into the portal and disappeared into the belly of the Underworld.
((When everyone has described their part of the story, I'll let you know what happens next.))
Back in Haven...
"Oh, what a delightful feast I shall have! Come to me, o ye foolish knights! Come and join in my revelries!" The brilliant white mass of energy stood on top of the Great Clocktower, the very center of Haven. When it leaped to the ground, those who could bear to look at it through the light would see that it vaguely resembled a human body with six legs. A long mane of semi-transparent hair flowed from its head, and its two large eyes seemed to be perpetually on fire.
It suddenly darted at a nearby knight, and with its mouth opened far wider than was possible for any human, swallowed him whole. The Core creature licked its lips and scanned for its next prey. "Now then, who's next?"
