MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online (game). TF2 is not a Massively Multiplayer Online game. It's just a regular mulitplayer online game. I cannot say whether TF2 or Spiral Knights had more players online on a given day (I'd imagine TF2 would win most days), but I can say that TF2 is not the most-played mmo on steam, because it does not belong in that category.

but I can say that TF2 is not the most-played mmo on steam, because it does not belong in that category.
That seems incredibly arbitrary. It's massive, it's online, and it's multiplayer. Yet it's not an MMO? Bah, I say! Bah! At any rate, I suppose I'll concede the disagreement.
I cannot say whether TF2 or Spiral Knights had more players online on a given day (I'd imagine TF2 would win most days)
You would be right by about... 50,000 players, at worst, every day.
Methinks people are confusing an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game with MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), which SP falls on the latter and the former encompasses games that can be played online with many other players at a given time (hence 'Massively Multiplayer') like TF2.
there was a definition somewhere, about MMO, or MMORPG or what not.
one of the defining features is persistent world.
so there is something that always exists, even if players do not.
SK barely makes the cut, because even if all the players are removed, the AH and the arcade with the gate configurations would still exist..
but that's about it.. everything else is instanced.
i don't think you can just dissect MMO into individual parts and call any game that is Massive, Multiplayer and Online a MMO.
it's just like calling everything a RPG, cos in every game you're playing a role.
either way, saying "SK is the biggest MMO" on steam is utterly useless...for 2 reasons
1. Steam is a games distribution platform..... i don't know even know why you would use it to qualify any statement.
2. Steam obviously doesn't count non-steam users, and other MMOs not on steam.
it is improper usage of statistics, if you use statistics that way, you could 'prove' a lot of things.
"either way, saying "SK is the biggest MMO" on steam is utterly uselesss..."
You saying that is utterly useless too since... noone said such a thing, stop trying to manipulate what i said.
sorry
SK is the most played MMO today on steam today @#139
in which both points 1 and 2 are still valid
Instead of being a smartass, why don't you actually read the context in which jooozek made the original statement. Someone was claiming that all the steam players had left the game. To which jooozek replied with the actual stats for the number of steam players on that day with the qualification that this was the most of any MMO on steam (that day). (i.e. he gave a context whether this number was high or low.)
This sort of renders your points 1 and 2 moot.
It wasn't "Almost all Steam players have left," it was "Many Steam players have left." We had over 70 English Havens up simultaneously during the first couple days post-Steam launch, and now we've got maybe 35 on a weekend. That certainly makes it look to me like many Steam players DID leave.
The game is popular, yes, but if you REALLY wanted to drive that point home, it'd be more useful to point out that it was just below Portal 2 on that stats page (and is, in fact, higher than Portal 2 on that page right this moment), or that the 1,000,000th account was registered just two weeks ago. Pointing out that it's number 1 on Steam stats is not saying much, as it was also number 1 during the Steam rush by a much, much larger margin. It's just a lot less number-1-ish, less dominating-everything-ish than it was back then... because many of the Steam players left.
Somewhere, there was a post made during the Steam Rush where someone pointed out there were more people playing Spiral Knights than TF2 on the Steam stats... Right this moment there are over 50,000 players on TF2. And Spiral Knights topped TF2's stats during the Steam rush. And now Spiral Knights is down to less than 5,000. Looks like many Steam players left Spiral Knights.
And this still has nothing to do with Vise, Punch, and their pet snipe they adopted and named Falcon [citation needed].
...Now I wanna see a Snipe wearing a tiny plump Mender robe and hood.

The world couldn't handle it. Hell, it can't even handle gremlins without ruining them via Rula 34.
Update on this- check the announcements, it's coming today.
Question!
If I get 3 UVs on an item, will there be a weird possibility of getting the same UV multiple times?
For example if I pay Punch for 3 UVs on my Haze Bomb, will I be guaranteed to get 3 different effects and not, for example, 3 damage bonuses to Beasts?
You cannot have two of the same types of UVs at once. So no double beast damage or anything.
so to clarify, nick, if i currently have a UV Max CTR archeron, i have no ability to get another 2 uv's on the item and SAVE my really awesome current UV.
That is correct. If you use Punch's services, it starts fresh every time.
its like the updates to this game is the "hand-crusher hand shake guy"
hi, i'm nice, i'm going to shake your hand hello.
but i'm also a jerk, and i'm going to surprise you by crushing your hand.
Because now i feel like i am being punished for already getting my awesome gear, before we ever had the chance @ 3 UVs. And there was never any hint that we could (in the future) get 3 UVs.
I think that you should allow 1 roll where you can save a UV and get two more. Just so ALL OF THOSE OF US who have already spent tons of time and energy at least have one shot at adding a multiple UVs to our "prestige items."
Understood, thank you for the information!
And, of course, for the update itself. I can think of a few people that were/are in need of improved low-graphics settings.
I'll have to check it out later today.
Hrmm. So the items with a single UV I have now just plummeted in value?
So, my take-away from the UV shop release notes is that all old UVs are going to be *MUCH* less popular, even a MAX UV. The chance of getting at least one UV that used to be considered very rare/very good has gone up significantly, and the now you can get up to three UVs, and there is a chance that more than one of those will be what was once considered very rare/very good. Yes, we won't be swimming in Very High ASI swords, but there will be more of them, and there will be ones that are not only VH ASI but med CTR and low damage vs Fiends also, all on the same sword.
People will keep re-rolling the UVs until they get something that is at least OK, then they will stop sinking more crowns into that item. The risk of destroying even an OK set of UVs is not worth it, it will be cheaper to try again on a newly crafted item and try to sell the one that wasn't so great. Instead of the AH being flooded with cheap non-UV equipment, it will be flooded with equipment with "bad" UVs.
I expect material prices to drop dramatically as people stop rage crafting for UVs, and crafting a much smaller number of items that will be taken to the UV shop once, twice or *maybe* three times. This will also lower the demand for CE for those lines that start on 3* and even those lines that start on 2* where people use CE instead of ME to craft.
This is going to be "interesting'....
Edit:
Oh, the other parts of the release!
Most of the stuff, I really like. I hope the new graphics changes helps my laptop and such. (It is within the publish hardware requirements, but effectively unplayable past T1.)
As far as unbinding, in many ways, I was really hoping you couldn't unbind stuff bought with tokens, trinkets, etc. i guess we will find out the details of stuff like that, along with prices, soon enough.
You guys are discussing such unimportant matters, why didn't anyone mention the most important change.
The knights can now blink.
And that means they are probably biological beings, because robots wouldn't need to. They will also see more clearly which will make guns more accurate.
And all you care about are some stupid UV's. You disappoint me.
my time and energy. I've spent 100s of hours in this game amassing a small fortune through blood, sweat, and tears (chroma tears, even). And then, i finally spent that small fortune in the last couple of weeks. On items that were the best of the best of the best. Then, in one thoughtless, fail-swoop, my items were just completely marginalized in value.
And on a grander scheme, people have spent thousands of hours, and countless thousands of dollars, crafting up the best gear attainable. And now, with one update, all of the gear has been rendered second-rate. Don't get me wrong, its still good, effective gear, but it can be nothing less than second rate. As now someone is going to craft a max ctr calibur that is also low this and medium that.
Same with brandish. The prized possession in my spiral knight career, i finally bought a max ctr brandish to forge the ultimate archeron. but in a week from now, someone will have a max ctr archeron that is also med. slime and low fiend (or even better!).
i could go on, but instead i'll just /vent
p.s. i hope others who feel the same way will express their feelings as well, and i hope OOO will listen. Something as simple as giving us the option to buy one 3 UV roll on any peice of gear with a "save one UV" option would rectify the issue. Granted, i have no idea how easy/hard that'd be to program.
you are angry? seriously?
this update is just a "give us more moneh"-step from OOO, nothing more.
why would you be so suprised of this, cosidering they're a company which has to make profits?
Free to Play games are already a risk on their own and this step was just predictable (maybe not this soon but cash needs to flow one way or another)
that's btw the sole reason for the giveaway weekend aswell. the prizes they give away are so much smaller than the income from people playing 24hours those 3 days, maybe even buying more CE to keep going.
@Prizmat - Spiral Knights are clearly cyborgs. Up until now, they've had to use drops to keep their lidless eyes moistened. Now they don't have to carry the bottle around.
@OOO - Like I said above, the 3 UV option really kind of hoses any existing equipment. Maybe you could give everyone a chance to roll for extra UVs on one item they currently own? Or two items?
...Items in this game are not anything close to being "guaranteed" in their value, as it's all player-driven.
I for one welcome our new Tri-UV overlords.
game screwed me and many people over. rage done. hope there is a fix.
It would be nice if there was a way of telling if the equipment with UVs were pre-UV shop or not. They would still be middle of the road at best, but they would at least become rarer over time. Maybe a year from now, they would sell for 10% or even 50% over what identical post-UV shop equipment sells for.
It isn't like we didn't know that a UV shop is coming... We just didn't realize that not only would you be able to get UVs, but you would be able to get more UVs. Even Cory's slip up in his post from earlier in this thread was quickly redacted. If you had given people as much notice of this much more significant change, it would have gone over much better...
Its all about patience, if you are willing to wait you can always get a better deal on just about anything. I bought my laptop two years ago and now when I go look for a new laptop I see that I can buy computers that are twice as fast for half the cost; does this mean the computer store should reimburse me? No, I bought what I wanted, when I wanted it, and I'm not going to whine about how my stuff is going to decrease in value over time.
This happens in pretty much every single MMO that gets end-game content updates, the awesome item a player spend so much time and effort in obtaining is rendered useless when the level cap is increased by 5 and a new awesome items lies in some dungeon to be obtained. Does this make all previous effort worthless? Possibly, but the player also got to enjoy the best end-game item for however long before the end-game update.
I agree with Priz. People don't simply have fun in the game and they want to play the market all day. The market is not the game. Go down into the clockworks and have some fun in your free time or don't play at all, imo. :/
I think it was slipped for a long time that we could get 3 UVs on an item. The player pills on the ignored list shows three little UV symbols. I figured the gremlin update would unlock the other UV slots by being able to add additional UVs to an item, never considered that it would erase the old ones though. Nice surprise that crafted items can get multiple UVs now.
Nick obviously loves UVs.
NO BLANKY I WILL NOT GO DOWN INTO THE CLOCKWORKS. geez, the game is about going to the clockworks and actually using ur items? .. silly silly.
I agree with Prizmat and I'm surprised people are wasting time pondering about UV re-rolls and unbinding when there is blinking that's coming!
C'mon it's the most awesome feature since release! I can't wait to blink for the first time.
My fellow guild mate - Dcurd - has been wondering recently how blinking will affect energy market. This is a question that every sensible knight should be asking now.
But seriously. I'm also surprised there were people out there desperately hunting for UV gear and ready to waste (yes - waste) vast amount of time and money on such madness. I've never done it. That's why I'm ok with an update. The pressure of "being the best" or rather "having the best" is infantile at best.
@philidor
Same with brandish. The prized possession in my spiral knight career, i finally bought a max ctr brandish to forge the ultimate archeron. but in a week from now, someone will have a max ctr archeron that is also med. slime and low fiend (or even better!).
So what? Please tell me what happen when someone will have archeron "better" then yours. Are you gonna explode? Take it easy.
And on a grander scheme, people have spent thousands of hours, and countless thousands of dollars, crafting up the best gear attainable. And now, with one update, all of the gear has been rendered second-rate.
That's how "spending thousands of hours, and countless thousands of dollars, crafting up the best gear attainable" usually ends. In game and real life alike.
EDIT: ok, now I feel the RAGE too! How did they dare to do such atrocity to Vatel?!
FROG JUICE! Takes forever for it to update for me...
YES LULZKING.
BECAUSE THIS IS A GAME WITH SPREADSHEETS AND WE DO ECONOMY WORK ALL THE TIME.
FUN.
:D
SOMETHING IS WRONG!
Downloading data...
27% complete 22:30 remaining (AND RISING!!!!!)
someone will have a max ctr archeron that is also med. slime and low fiend (or even better)
Hyperbole ahoy! Do you know how UNLIKELY that would be and how EXPENSIVE it would be to try?
To those who spent immense amounts of money on the "best" equipment: you should have known better. It's inevitable for an evolving game to increase the power of items. It happens in every MMORPG, and it keeps games from being stagnant.
I for one welcome this new increase in power and variety. I just hope that monsters are made tougher to compensate.
I have a Twisted Snarble Barble with UV medium Slimes and a Faust with UV medium Undead. Hopefully it won't be too much...
I take it back OOO. Your crazy expensive price structure for multiple UVs sounds good to me. Give those already at end game something else to aspire towards but generally leaves the rest of the market alone.
"You can reroll all you like, erasing the UV it had previously. Any item save for costumes and trinkets[can some1 clarify this? how do i roll a trinket?] can roll for a UV, including token-purchased items."
Any item SAVE for costumes and trinkets[can some1 clarify this? how do i roll a trinket?]
Save is the operative word.
You roll a trinket by taking it off, tying it to a ball, and roll the ball.
ahhhh thank you, just learned a new english word! :D
It looks like the Needle Shot's model was updated to make it more Autogun-like.

I finally got around to looking at the actual costs for Vise's service and they are laughably bad. Vise's costs are as follows:
1* = 100 energy
2* = 200 energy
3* = 600 energy
4* = 1800 energy
5* = 4000 energy
Okay, first off, unbinding 1,2, and 3* items is a little silly. But at these prices, you can RE-BUILD any item you're thinking of unbinding for CHEAPER than Vise can get it to you. And not only cheaper, but stupidly cheaper. It literally takes 10 energy to craft a 1* item. Total cost for a 3* item is 250 energy - LESS THAN HALF what it would take to unbind an item with Vise.
If you were to actually build a Leviathan from scratch, you'd only pay 1450 energy (plus 8900 crowns, and materials.) But to buy a Leviathan from someone else, the cost is 5450 energy, plus materials. The prices one would have to sell bound gear at to make up for the energy cost are (at current market prices) 192,000 crowns OVER what people would have to pay for just making the item. And that's just to break even.
This is important. I could literally buy ALL the ingredients AND the recipe for a Leviathan AND the energy from the free market for building and it would be CHEAPER than using Vise.
Keep in mind, unbinding equates to "I want to sell my Azure Set so I can look at replacing it with something more awesome." Vise completely fails at this. Which would be acceptable if there was a single thing that he did accomplish, but he doesn't.
These costs are *at least* off by an order of magnitude. At 400 energy for unbinding a five star, you could safely assume people would wait until mist energy reduces the cost by a unit, so it's really 300 energy, which is about 15k. That's likely an acceptable margin for some cases - freeing up items to sell now that you've outgrown them, or trading items among guild members. Of course, this presumes that the recent lull in energy markets is permanent, and I'm certain it will not be. Nothing to be excited by, but workable.
I can't speak to Punch's prices with any authority, but I can say I've used Punch to add a UV to my Dread Vile Striker. (*A* UV, because the prices for more than one *seem* ridiculous, though they might not be. In any case, I've only had 75k crowns a few times in my playing this game, and have never had 375k.) But at these prices, I'm flabbergasted to find something to do with Vise.
This, however, is blatently wrong, and is unusually bad.
The prices one would have to sell bound gear at to make up for the energy cost are (at current market prices) 192,000 crowns OVER what people would have to pay for just making the item.
Yes. That was about what people were paying for unbound 4*/5* items before the unbind shop. Clearly, there were a few people willing to pay that. Now, the market is flooded with them, but based on items that have disappeared early from the auction house, a few are still selling too.
Just because you don't think 4*/5* equipment is worth that much, it doesn't mean that it isn't. If the cost to unbind was too much cheaper, there would be lots of people complaining about how brand new players can come in and just buy 5* sets. There are already people complaining about that as is.
Oh, and as far as 2*/3* unbinding? Think heart pendants.
Now you ignore the MMO part? You play classy, i'll just ignore your posts from now on.
