LOL Tournament Wiki Page

I've played in my fair share of MMOs and I've been attached to a Guild in almost all of them. Almost every other MMO, of which Spiral Knights also finds itself to be, has content, end-game or otherwise that is specifically geared to Guilds. Spiral Knights currently doesn't have much for Guilds to do outside of Guild Lockdown or Blast Network that a friends list doesn't also do.

I've already made a Suggestion as to how to give guilds some additional purpose or goals to strive towards. I was thinking we could have a fun little community event to bring some more focus on to Guilds that wouldn't require waiting for Developers to add content.

So my pitch to all you guys out there is a Guild PVP Tournament, my preference would be a single or double knockout tournament featuring 2 to the power of X guilds, preferably 8. I envision that each "match" consists of a double-header between the guilds with the higher aggregate score being declared the winner. In the unlikely event that the scores are tied, the teams can either play a third deciding match or hilariously engage in Guild Blast Network, just because no one ever does that anymore.

Some of the Issues of Implementation:
1) Scheduling - Currently, as there is no other method available, all scheduling would need to be agreed upon through the forums. I have no idea for settling disputes between parties. This would make it very very difficult to make matches between Guilds based primarily in different Time Zones (Europe and North America for example).
2) Prizes - Seeing as this is my idea and I am not an old school rich player (I'm actually F2P) with an abundance of crowns, crystal energy and boredom I do not have anything that I can offer out as an incentive for Guilds, let alone players, to participate in this endeavour. In an ideal world, the Developers would see this potential event as something super cool and offer perhaps Tournament Winner Costume prizes out to the winning team or Crown/CE prizes. Even something like what was offered during Birdsong Trading Co. would be great. I can't think of Ante system that would be too great either, because it revolves around trusting the person that is pooling the money to not just keep it and dole it out accordingly. Right now, bragging rights is all that is at stake.
3) Wiki Help - It would be great to put the results up on the Wiki, including Team Members, screenshots, outcomes, all that good stuff but I'm not good at any of that. I imagine it would look a lot like one of those awesome Soccer Tournament Wikipedia pages.

TL;DR

What? Guild Lockdown Tournament - Single Knockout
When? Match-ups occur once a week, to be agreed upon between the two guilds participating
Prizes? Bragging rights

Please Discuss! Anyone find this proposition interesting? Would any Guilds be willing to throw their hats in the ring?

Great idea!

I'm sure Clockwork Renegades would be up for T1 PVP.

Thanks Becs!

Thanks Becs!

Please let me know if there any details involving the tournament idea that you would want to change.

If the TIER 1 thing is a bit of a deterrent to other guilds from participating, please note the sentence that says if both sides agree, the Guilds may participate in a higher Tier match.

If people would like to sign their guild up, the following details would need to be provided:

  • Guild Name: The name of your guild, duh.
  • IGN Contact(s): People that will talk with myself and other guild contacts to schedule matches, likely GMs, Officers or Veterans.
  • Main Guild Timezone: e.g. Eastern Standard Time.

Well, that's the idea Darkmoonshoadow. Most of my ideas for improving Spiral Knights center on improving Guilds, because Guilds are currently run buddies and little else and there's a lot of room for improvement on that aspect of Spiral Knights I think.

Hmm...

The problem with knockouts is that you have to seed each guild properly. That way, there would be a balance in the knockout stages that won't lead to the 2 top guilds at Lockdown fighting each other so early in the competition. Normally, the top guilds already know the strategies and skills necessary to play Lockdown well even without their best stuff right?

Well I was thinking... If we could change the knockouts into a group stage and knockout tournament like what they do in the FIFA World Cup, this idea would be wonderful. There would be the 1st seeds and unseededs if the group stage idea went to plan. The top 10-20 guilds in the rankings could take the 1st seeds, and everyone else would be randomly assorted. That way, there would only be 1 top guild in each group and room for upsets should the unseededs win against the top seeds in T1 Lockdown (the tournament desired). The scheduling can be predetermined through the forums by setting immovable times and dates to when the games should be played. If the guild can't make the time, well they've forfeited; the schedule was already planned before the tournament, so the guilds have to follow it.

If group stages won't be feasible, I'll still tell our AFK people about it, because we would love to play some tier 1 Lockdown in a tournament. Now if only there was a blast network tournament...

@Lhykos they said they read

@Lhykos they said they read the thread and are interested, they also both seem a bit puzzled about the T1 part and I guess we will have some internal T1 PvP practice before committing to a tournament... I hope they'll expand on this themselves, otherwise I'll end up being punished (that's what happens when you have to evil GMs :P)

@Mightyputty group stages are also nice in that they lead to more matches being played, which I think is a good thing.

Another option, depending on the number of guilds participating, is a "Swiss"-like tournament (as used in chess or go tournaments for instance). Each guild will play the same number of matches this way [very basically, you pair guilds with the same number of victories, avoiding rematches...].

Guild Name: AFK
IGN Contact(s): Mightyputty, Irevolutioni (I'll add more contacts should we have more interest from veterans and officers)
Main Guild Timezone: Eastern Standard Time

I'll spread the word to AFK's friend guilds so we can get more teams into the tournament. We should try getting enough teams for group stages for more matches and more interest. Just check my previous post for more details.

Sign ups and Critiques

Awesome!

This gives us as signed up Guilds:

  • GUILD - CONTACTS - TIMEZONE
  • Clockwork Renegades - Becca - EST
  • The Risen - Tipiak, Velcro, Gwen - EST
  • Impervious - Sciasz, Swarleysparkles - EST
  • AFK - Mightyputty, Irevolutioni - EST

I would like to request that all of the Contacts mentioned in the list above, please Add Friend myself and each other with the Message "LOL Tournament Contact". I have decided to call this thing the Lhykos Open Lockdown Tournament because the acronym works out awesome. If enough people think I'm being too narcissistic then I'll change that name in a hurry!

To address some of the points made already:

  • "they also both seem a bit puzzled about the T1 part" - I picked T1 for all the reasons that I mentioned above in the original post. I still stand by those reasons as I think they are all valid. I also picked it because I recall going up against a Skolver-clad, Gran Faust wielding RubyEclipse (that's right I just name-dropped) and being severely traumatized by the experience. You can recall as an addendum that I did mention that teams may "up the Tier" if a consensus could be reached.
  • "The problem with knockouts is that you have to seed each guild properly" - I thought this could be an issue initially, but I really really really wanted to get at least one of these tournaments up and running and just see some matches instead of worrying about seeding. Perhaps if we get a Tournament under our belts first it would be easier to seed the Guilds at a later time? No Guild I know of routinely plays in Tier 1 anyway, so I think seeding would be a little silly at this point.
  • "Another option, depending on the number of guilds participating, is a "Swiss"-like tournament" - I was already thinking how brief knocked-out guilds experience in the tournament would be, this is a fantastic solution to that problem. With a solid 8 teams, this could guarantee each guild 3 matches.
  • "change the knockouts into a group stage and knockout tournament" - This too is a great idea and if we are stuck with only 4 participating teams, I think I would change the format to this. As I mentioned in an above point, I'm really worried about the Tournament dragging on and losing interest over time, so for it's inaugural run I wanted a Tournament that could conclude decisively and quickly.

I will keep the sign up for a little bit longer, with 4 teams we can already start something though which is encouraging! The turnout I think will likely end up defining the format of the tournament.

I'll friend you in an instant

I'll friend you in an instant Lhykos. Our guild's participation in the tournament is still tentative because of how university and work are preventing us from playing much. Also, many of our members come from a wide range of different timezones, but EST's the most common one.

I was wondering if we could limit the weaponry and armor to the default spiral stuff we all get when we start the game. That way, there would be absolutely no unfairness with changes in armor and weaponry.

Welcome!

Welcome to the thread Velcro!

It's not only great to hear from new guilds, but it's also great to hear more voices from the guilds already presently interested!

@Mightputty: I understand your concern for fairness in terms for equipment, this is yet another reason that I choose Tier 1. Let's assume that you did the minimum required effort and acquired 1* Helm, Armor, Sword, Gun. In the course of a full Snarbolax (Depths 1 - 7) run you can get all 4 of those items to level 5 or higher. I think asking participants to put that much effort in, literally less than 1 days worth of mist, is not unfair considering the disparity in equipments at the T3 level. While I like the idea of putting everyone in proto gear, the unfortunate issue is that it is impossible to police. At best, participants can police what Tier the contests take place in. Plus, giving people the full run of Tier 1 equipment allows for some variety, even though it is pretty miniscule.

@Tipiak: I'm glad my acronym amuses you, that's why I picked it. :)

Just a quick add.

T1 allows Heart Pendants. Which makes someone near impossible to kill alone. Seriously, they can just sit there and yawn whilst you swing away like a madman and still survive. Even as a striker. It throws the idea of skill off if someone takes twice as many hits to kill as you do... even if you're guardian and they're striker.

Just sayin'. I T1 alot. It's a pain.

@Lhykos I understand the tier 1 thing, so I'm fine with it. Our participation in this tournament is now official by the way, so thanks a ton for setting this up. Some of my guildies want an approximate date for the tournament so they can plan ahead. I've played Lockdown for quite a while already, but our guild hasn't gotten much of a try, so it'll be great Lockdown training for us.

Sweet!

The Official Guild Roster is up above, and a link has been made to it in the first post.

@Mightyputty and Everyone involved: I plan to keep the signup open for today and maybe even tomorrow. I am very keen to kick the tournament off before interest in it wanes. So the first round of matches would likely be set this weekend.

In terms of dates and scheduling, it will be up to each guild to schedule their own matches within a set period of time. For direct knockout stages, the guilds involved will be required to schedule and compete within one week. For Round Robins consisting of 3 teams will be expecting to play their 2 games within one week. Round Robin pools consisting of more than 3 teams will likely get two weeks or longer in which to play all their matches. However, it is up to the Guilds themselves and not myself to schedule those matches. You will have to use in-game chat, this forum thread, or in-game mail to discuss the scheduling.

In an ideal world, I set up the matches and they all get played within 1-2 days. In the case where all the matches scheduled have been finished ahead of time I would not wait a week and schedule the next matches right away.

This is the best scheduling method that I can come up with, if anyone has something better by all means offer it forward.

@Kally: Yes, I know that Heart Trinkets could really be a big deal. For Strikers though, that would be AT MAX a change from 4 bars to 6 bars of health. It can't be helped and it could be worse, it could be T3 Heart Pendants. As I have said before, Guilds are free to 'Up the Tier' if both sides agree to do so.

Scheduling

@Tipiak: Yes, sadly the 'ideal' scenario is rarely ever reality. However, I did not want to effectively discriminate between either weekend players or weekday players by setting a particular day.

Here is what I want to see happening.

Me -> This week! GUILD A vs GUILD B
Guild A Contact -> My guilds best days are Monday, Thursday, Saturday... I would prefer to play on Saturday.
Guild B Contact -> My guild can do Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday... lets try to get a game in Thursday evening and if that fails then we'll try on Saturday.
Guild A Contact -> Okay.

IN GAME ON A WEDNESDAY
Guild A Contact -> Oh hey I see you're online, we happen to have 6 Tourney players hanging around and could be good to go in 40 minutes. Think you could scramble together a Team?
Guild B Contact -> Let me check.
Guild B Contact -> Yup, see you in 40.

Match Ups!

@Mightyputty: I will be closing the sign up this evening at around 10pm TODAY and forming the Tournament format then.

If we stay at 6 teams the format will be as follows:

Two Round Robin Pools, each Guild has 1 match against each other guild in its pool.
(This equates to 2 matches per Guild)

After the Round Robin Stage, the knockout portion will be seeded.

1) Pool A 3rd place vs Pool B 2nd place
2) Pool A 2nd place vs Pool B 3rd place

3) Winner of (1) vs. Pool A 1st Place
4) Winner of (2) vs. Pool B 1st Place
5) Loser of (1) vs Loser of (2) - 5th and 6th place decider

6) Loser of (3) vs Loser of (4) - Bronze Medal Game
7) Winner of (3) vs Winner of (4) Championship (Gold Medal) Game

With this format, each guild will play either 4-5 matches in the Tournament. That is of course if we stay at 6 Guilds.
Alternatively we simply pair off the Pool Placements (Pool A 1st vs Pool b 1st) after the Round Robin stages and each Guild only gets 3 matches. I guess it depends on how quickly the matches get finished and whether the interest level remains high.

Another Question

Lhykos, a question for the future. How should we spread word of a future tournament should the current tournament be successful? It would be awesome if we could get 32 guilds and have 8 groups of 4 for a PVP SK-Cup that's held once every 4 months.

Future Considerations

@Mightyputty: Well, I would certainly love it if this endeavour could evolve into something that big. I imagine we could Advertise to different forums, Guild Recruitment being the most obvious one. Depending on the level of interest/success of this tournament we could possibly petition for Developer help for advertisement.

One of the things I would like to do for the purposes of this tournament is to create a lengthy Wiki page that documents the matches that took place using (hopefully) screenshots of the Final Results table shown after every individual Lockdown game. When people can look back and see some of the games that took place in the past and maybe get a chance to put their own guild down and be "Set in Stone" on a Wiki page perhaps it would add to it's luster.

I'd like to include Guild Rosters (all the players who participated) and maybe some statistics if I could... like Captures/Match, Defends/Match Damage/Match(T1 only). Stuff like that I think would be pretty cool. I don't really know how to work the Wiki at the moment per-say so it would be great if I could get some help in that area, but I'm sure if I took the time I could bang something out.

OFFICIAL MATCH AND TOURNAMENT RULES

Match Rules:

  • Know the rules before you begin your match.
  • Each match is comprised of two Lockdown games.
  • Game scores are altered into percentages, rounded down to the nearest integer. (I.e 900 to 600 = 100% to 66%)
  • Winning teams cannot score over 100%
  • The winner of the match has the highest combined score of the two Lockdown games.
  • If after two Lockdown games the scores are tied, the teams will play Guild Blast Network games until one Guild wins.
  • You do not have to play your two Lockdown games one directly after the other (i.e. Play Again), it is expected for you to take 5 or 10 minutes to discuss strategy or alter your roster before completing the 2nd game.
  • If the two teams decline to play the 2nd half, the team that declines is assigned the losing score of the first game and the other team is assigned 100%
  • All games are played on Tier 1 unless a consensus can be reached to change the match to a higher Tier. If both teams cannot agree on a higher Tier the game will take place on Tier 1.
  • If a Guild Player is disconnected from any game and the teams are unbalanced BEFORE THE COMBINED SCORE IN THE GAME REACHES 50 the match does not officially count. If one team repeatedly has a player disconnected 3 consecutive times, the 3rd game officially counts. This rule does not apply to Guild Blast Network.
  • For Data Collection, results will be placed in THIS THREAD and confirmed by both teams. Not just win/loss but the actual scores in the games. Screenshots showing the Final Results and Player Statistics are VERY DESIRABLE. Please post screenshots of the Final Results in this thread either through Steam or a site like Photobucket.
  • Have fun and be respectful!

Round Robin Rules:

  • After all games have been played, Tiebreaks are resolved in the following order: Head-to-head, Best +/i, Guild Blast Network
  • Unplayed games by the deadline will count as a loss to the team who has played the least games and win for the team who has played the most games. If both teams have played the same amount of games, they both receive a loss.

The first match will not be

The first match will not be AFK vs. Revelation unfortunately. It will be AFK vs The Risen instead.

It will begin around 3:30pm East or 3:45pm East.

Concerning the match of The Risen vs. Mightyputty:

Scores in agreement with Mightyputty - http://i51.tinypic.com/akwt39.png

Note we had hit play again but instead got a match with Revelation. And now we don't have a full team to play with on our side. Though it was brought to my attention that a summed point system with two halves doesn't make much sense with 900 and 500 point games. Taking our game against Mightyputty for example, if we had a 500 point game after that 900 point one there would be no way they could win, 500+365 < 865. Whereas if it were a 500 point game with equal percentile scores (so about 500 for us, 200 for them) then they could win more easily, and especially more easily if the next match were a 900 point game.

Revelation Vs The Risen

The Risen wins by 500-80. T1 sure is a pain. One of my members couldn't take it and left the guild...I guess Revelation will have to forfeit this tournament for the time being. Probably it has been a slow day for us. We used to be always geared up for LD but now we are starting to wane.

Ok, I must admit I hadn't

Ok, I must admit I hadn't even noticed that they were not the same opponents... still I would have said both games were good, much more than the final scores might show. There were many players completely new to T1 lockdown, and thus many were surprised. I really feel sorry for the guy who left his guild just because of one loss... hope he'll come back.

I'm not so sure what the status is, then, but indeed I think it would make more sense to add the rank points rather than the brute scores to get the winner of 2-games matches: the rank points are percentiles and thus comparable between games, well I guess...

Thanks to all those who already played, I had a great time, I hope we can all enjoy and attract more people to Guild LD and T1 LD...
