Hi everyone,
As you all probably know, this year is claimed to be the "end of the world". Apparently, after deciphering and looking deep into the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar ). A few scientists (and people) came to the conclusion that the world is gonna end on the 21st of December 2012. APPARENTLY, the Mesoamericans (or Mayans) were very intelligent people and used astrology very often to predict future events. Their calender (which somehow predicts future events) ends on the 21st of December 2012, that day somehow marks the day of creation (don't ask me exactly what the "creation" is). (Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon , not bothered typing up everything :P)
Apparently some catastrophic events are supposed to happen on that day. There have already been a lot of predictions such as a large planet nearly (or was it much bigger?) the size of Earth making a collision with it. There are also other theories such as supernovas and the alignment of stars somehow having an effect on Earth. Some even say that on that day the Earth will be striked by a huge wave of radiation (gamma rays) from the sun, weakening its Magnetic Field so that random North and South poles start appearing all over the Earth. ETC ETC ETC
Now I'm not sure about you all, but that all sounds like a load of papaya to me.
Lets talk about the planet collision thingy. First of all, how is something THAT big gonna travel through space at THAT speed. For starters the planet (Nirbiru) hasn't been SEEN yet. So unless its gonna go against Einstein's theory that nothing can travel faster than light (which has already kinda been proven wrong, but only marginally) then I'd say we can check "Huge planet making a gigantic collision with Earth" off our list of things to worry about.
About supernovas, the closest star to our Earth which is about to go through the final stage of its life (in this case its a Supernova) is much too far away to have any effect on Earth, or any other planet in our Solar System as a matter of fact.
About random alignments: How the hell are a bunch of stars in a straight line gonna effect Earth?
About the sun reaching a solar maximum and the Earth being bombarded with gamma rays: Yes, there is gonna be a peak in the amount of gamma rays the sun emits, but the peak this year is fairly small compared to previous ones. So unless the Earth's magnetic field is pathetically weak (which it isn't) then we don't have to worry about this for the next hundred thousand years or so (after that, start worrying :P)
Not bothered covering the rest of this, need to get back to studying for my Chinese Test :P
Thoughts?
[Well, I'm still alive, how about you guys?]
