FIX IT!
lets fix this shining/radiant fire crystal glitch already
It seems SLs still give radiants. Makes sense, since they're considered to be some floor below 29 (never bothered to figure out the exact depth, but I'm sure someone has)
Am I the only person that understands this is a good change? The problem with Shining fire crystals is that they were too uncommon and were outright required in order to advance your gear. Radiants, on the other hand, are just to tack on extra power.
All depths?
If we get 15+ radiants per person per run, farming SL for radiants has just become economical (relatively speaking ofc, it's still super costly). Also only if we sell the rare mat for a good price every time.
I would've been totally fine with doing the first half of Tier 3 runs to get 4* fire crystals...however, it's worth noting that 5* alch orbs will be an order of magnitude harder to come by as a result of this as well.
Sure, I can spin this one for a win; but the cost for dealing with this situation is so much more than it would've been previously that it's pretty hard to justify. This basically means the 5* players are going to be subsidizing all the people who don't have to pay anything up to 3*, whereas the 3* and below people at least might have gotten CE before to deal with the elevators. It makes the paywall at endgame a lot more obvious--obvious enough to where it's not very fun. It also makes heat worthless. Notice how much the 30-day heat amplifiers go for in the AH, despite the Supply Depot valuing them so highly?
Shining were only uncommon if all you did was play KOA.
....because having things that are quote unquote, "required," (in the late game which you already have mass destruction) will ruin the game. Just, logic.

EDIT: Double post blyjhrgauyjr
I only noticed them in the second floor of the Ice Queen SL, didn't get any crystals at all on the first floor but that's probably just the RNG there.
5* orbs are still found where they normally are, I did notice some changes in the other depths though (like 4* orbs in S3)
"only uncommon if all you did was play KoA"
All of Stratum 6.
Every danger mission.
Every shadow lair.
All that was out the window if you wanted Shining crystals.
Thing is, it felt way more grindy when you were forced to go to the least profitable (and arguably least difficult) part of T3 in order to get the crystals.
I can confirm that 5* orbs can still be found in FSC. Got 2 from a couple runs after the patch hit.
But 3* orbs seem to be found at depths where 4* orbs were more common before. This may affect their popular farming places.
Didn't someone mention more missions and a new boss getting added, in part of the same whatever notice talked about the Arcade Redux? But since the story already refers to FSC several times as the final challange before the core, and we'd need to go deeper to get any more challanges...
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the core, new home of radiant fire crystals." -predicted impending anouncment
Failing that, maybe the new missions will have radiants anyway, being deeper in the story if not the planet.
This whole new energy removal system thing seems a heck of a lot unfair to me. Because unless you have a few hours EACH DAY to play Spiral Knights, it is nigh impossible to advance your 4* gear, and it is quite literally impossible to heat up your 5 star gear.
I just got this from OOO support, and it looks like this is a permanent change:
We typically make minor adjustments to drop rates and locations as part of our ongoing management of the game. Some variation should be expected.
Canned respond that everyone gets, but still.
You could've alchemized them from the 5* crystals, too. :P You were never really denied access to them in optimal endgame play.
I wouldn't mind if Radiants were 1/3 as common as before--1/10 just feels like right-out penalization instead of rebalancing. For them to leave it out of the notes is egregious.
And Re: Possiblespy: Let's be hopeful for Rank 10 missions!!!
There's this announcement Rank Mission Campaign Updates, New Tier 3 Boss, Challenge Mode. But note that the new campaign boss will still be Tier 3.
Ah, that's great news! This should be given a lot more attention. I will remain hopeful for expansion of the endgame over the upcoming months and just focus on crafting 5* stuff rather than heating it for the time being.
What does OCH drop? Because its final depth is a danger room style treasure hoard.
I am actually freaking out about this guys.
I want my radiants back.
NOAW!
same here man, im in a mild spiral knights depression, because im scared the devs are ruining the game again, it was finally a great game when they took out elevator costs, but if they hold our level ups ransom the game isnt worth playing
Just did full run on elite from 0 to 29 and got 0 5* crystals
Hi Worst Knight of Worst Guild. I also did a full elite arcade run, and the final depth was a treasure vault - I got 6 radiant in that vault and nothing on the rest of the run. Did FSC and got 3.
This is a farce - at this rate I will have to play for weeks (possibly months) just to increase a 5* item by only 1 level. Needless to say this is unsatisfactory.
Whats with the ppl having problems with shining crystals ?
I never had problems, maybe just the little numbers of them.
And if u get your 4* weapon heated you will evenially need radiant so stop whining.
It neeed to be fixed ASAP.
EDIT:
if devs wll be asking how was my game, they need to insert new options, below zero (-10 or more). 1 is not enough to describe it.
@Dean-Zane
"I already have over 600 radiants so im fine with those"
...
I guess you're not planning on heating those 3 weapons you listed once they're 5 star, are you?
As for "whats hard to find are the shining fire ones :P of which i am in the most dire need :D" (and everyone else saying this is a good change because "Shining Fire Crystals were so rare" even though we got no other crystals on the first 3 levels of S5):
You know this exists, yes? The price isn't even an excuse to complain about it because a full T3 run or a Vana run give more than enough money to craft buttloads of them.
That said, if OOO really plan on making Radiant Crystals more common in that new boss stuff they're working on (Even though the boss is supposed to be T3 - like Vanaduke), then I can just wait and take this chance to level up and craft the stuff I'm currently missing. I'd go as far as suggesting a change to orb drops too, because I haven't found an Elite Orb of Alchemy in weeks! :D And I still need to craft 8 pieces of gear so I can finally have all craftable 4 star gear.
On a side note
@Draycos
" "only uncommon if all you did was play KoA"
All of Stratum 6.
Every danger mission.
Every shadow lair.

That's redundant. (Tier 3) Danger Missions and Shadow Lairs are all in S6. In SLs' case, at least, after Basil. I don't know why you'd expect to get Shining crystals there.
Spark does drop from mobs
That I know. I saw them drop on Zombols and trojan mostly (due to FSC) they may have changed that though... I have over 10 people on Teamspeak that I speak to everyday, we find Spark of Life on Trojans from time to time (My GM drops an item each 2 week, we have super lucky pool, I looted 2 imposto kit last Winterfest in boxes *shrug*)
And no they were not Treasure Boxes that we destroyed over Trojans, I remember looting 3 Spark of Life, 2 in Boxes and 1 on Trojan at D27.
One of my friend has over 300 spark of life and over 3000 Radiant Fire Crystal... We used to run Arcade when Free Mist update came in and we found a BUNCH of Spark of life from multiple spot and after the SoL nerf update, we can still find em around (way less drop though)
I have 2 days off, if I get a SoL I'll take a picture and show you
Edit: I did a FSC yesterday (joined at end of D25) no Radiant at all, will we be able to upgrade our Fire Crystal now? or only downgrade?
There have now been 3 game updates in Steam that have not fixed this problem.
"We typically make minor adjustments to drop rates and locations as part
of our ongoing management of the game. Some variation should be expected."
Sorry but not being able to level up any 5 star items whatsoever is ***NOT*** a "minor adjustment" in any way, shape or form !!!
Our normally highly active guild has been much quieter since this update, since one of the major reasons to play FSC and T3 arcade (radiant) has been removed. No useful communication from OOO either about why, when it will be resolved or even that it's a bug at all. I was quite excited about the new update and this has killed all that excitement. Not happy.
ACTUALLY I am fully heating those weapons once they're 5*... so absolutely no problem...
and YES I know that we can craft 4* crystals... only problem is... 500 crowns for 5 crystals? Kinda costs alot when you need around 96 of em eh? I mean think about it... 500 x 96 = 48k... Yea dude.. I certainly want to spend 48k so I can heat my 4* Avenger to level 10.
PUHLEEASE
It feels like the game was stabbed. And will be dead soon. If it won't be healed quickly.
This game has been out for almost 3 years with an increasing playerbase.
This game is far from dying.
Drop rates for Shining and Radiants need to be increased drastically.

Increasing playerbase?

No, doesn't look that way. Looks very, VERY static, with only a spike due to sprite release/free elevators.
Looks like there are only about 1000 or so frequent players. No wonder I keep seeing the same guys so many times. The core community is tiny.
10,000 sounds more like the total number of players logged in per week. This is the past week:
http://www.steamgraph.net/index.php?action=graph&appid=99900&from=138150...
Admittedly this is only concurrent players, and not unique IDs per week, but still. Even if there are 10k players in the game, the point is that there's no evidence to indicate the playerbase is growing unless we were to have some evidence that playtime per player was decreasing.
@Dean-Zane
You plan on levelling three 5 star weapons with only 600 crystals? Good luck with that, you need 151 Radiants to level a 5 star piece of gear/weapon from 1 to ten, if you use the minimum amount of crystals. If you use the mid term you need 302. That, of course, if none of the forges fail. If you want to be sure it levels and go for the max number of crystals usable, you need 453 crystals. I guess you probably already knew, though. (I didn't, it was nice to find that out in the wiki, to be honest x3).
As for prices: Fair enough, 48k crowns to downgrade the crystals is a bit too much. But now you either pay 700 Energy for 50 Radiant Crystals or grind like SK has never been grinded (ground?) before. Since by the look of things we can only get between 3 and (being positive here) 10 Radiants at Depth 28 of either the normal Arcade levels or FSC.
100 Energy is 7994 crowns at the time of writing, so if you choose option one to get the Radiant crystals, that'll be 55,958 crowns. For only 50 Radiant Crystals. That's around 1120 crowns for each crystal. So for actual heating and forging, that'll be almost 170k crowns if you go with the minimum crystal forges (and get super lucky and succeed every forge); around 338k crowns for the mid term forge and 507k+ for the sure level up route.
For all that, I'd rather stock up on Radiants and then spend 48k crowns to level a 4 star from 1 to 10 - even though there's a bunch of missions you can just rush through without battling much and still get a decent number of Shinings; In Cold Blood seems to be one of the best missions for it - than bankrupt myself by buying the Crystals from the Supply Depot or spending way too much time dragging myself to D28 to get a handful of crystals.
EDIT: This is what I think. By no means do I want to force it on you, and I couldn't care less about what OOO does. If I got over the Radiant Sun Shards change I can sure as heck get over this. :p It'll just make levelling 5 star stuff a lot more boring or expensive.
EDIT 2: Noticed you said we need about 96 crystals to level a four star item 10 level ten (I'm assuming you meant from level 1 to 10?). Be that as it may, according to the wiki we need 103 crystals if we use the minimum option, 206 for the medium and 309 for the sure level up. That'd make the first option 51.500 crowns, the second 103k and the last one 154.500. IF we actually downgraded Radiants until we had the amount of Shinings needed. But again, In Cold Blood is a mission that can be rushed in a few minutes and gives (or gave, dunno if it changed) about 20 Shining Crystals per run.
It's 48k to forge a lvl 9 item to lvl 10 :D... think bout that :D anyways
Let's all forget about it... suck it up... and all be friends again..
I mean like... I'd rather kick Vana's [bucket] a few times a day instead of arguing about the CRYSTAL problem in the mission lobby. -_-
We're both at blame. I misunderstood and you made a typo (It's 69 crystals, not 96... which makes going from level 9 to 10 cost 34.500 crowns). But yeah, like I said in that post, before the edits: "If I got over the Radiant Sun Shards change I can sure as heck get over this. :p"
Let's just hope that the new boss has levels that drop more Radiants than Shinings, I do want to eventually get my hipster 5 star stuff to level 10 xD
In case these changes stay, it would be an obvious sign. If the whole Tier 3 drops Shinings, it means that in order to get Radiants we need to go deeper. So, devs are probably getting ready to open the Core.
Still, I hope it's all temporary, and things will be settled. They might probably be devising something like material map for rarities, which would tell that in gate 1 you have better chances to get Shinings, while gate 2 is full of Radiants.
This change kinda cripples any new players who want to progress to Tier 3. Sure, they can craft 5* gear but are better off keeping the 4* level 10 heat prequel instead since you need something like heat level 5 or 6 on the 5* to be better than the 4* heat level 10 equivalent. I already got some 5* stuff (not a lot but enough to get me through T3 most of the time) but won't be looking to expand my collection as it looks now. This in turn means I probably won't play as much since some of the charm of playing this game (to me at least) is to expand the weapon collection for variety. I guess I can always stick to T2 for that though.
Imagine new players with only 3* and 4* gear striving to beat T3 in the arcade (not necessarily FSC). I doubt most of them are good enough to reliably beat it with such a handicap and then knowing that T3 itself won't be enough to get radiants, you need to go further (T4? the core? Shadow Lairs?) to finish heating their 5* gear. Yeah, not happening. Assuming the safest heating route, only those who'll spend roughly 9*700 energy (9 * 50 = 450 is almost what you need to heat from level 1 to 10 according to a previous post above) have a realistic chance to finish. So either it's (currently) around 507k crowns or you can get 7500 energy for $20 (need 6300 if I calculated that right).
I hope this is a glitch that'll get resolved but I can also see it be a deliberate nerf. Time will tell =)
Before Update it was:
19 / 20 / 21 = Shining
22 = mix of Shining/Radiant
24 / 25 / 26 / 27 / 28 = Radiant.
Now it is:
19 / 20 / 21 / 22 / 24 / 25 / 26 / 27 = Shining
28 = mix of Shining/Radiant
I think perfect balance would be:
19 / 20 / 21 / 22 = Shining
24 = mix of Shining/Radiant
25 / 26 / 27 / 28 = Radiant
And that's what I'm asking for.
We don't know the specifics of what is coming. My guess is that challenge mode will bring back the radiants.
"We typically make minor adjustments to drop rates and locations as part
of our ongoing management of the game. Some variation should be expected."
Does this explain how I've been getting a bunch of advanceds in Time Enough at Last?
Because this sounds kind of permanent ._.
Also, this page is MINE! >:3 DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT!!?!?!?
Rubberfruit would be proud
