Edit: Ooh, New page.

Here, let me use this to simplify the words in using the system.

To begin a battle with your enemy, you must make an attempt roll.
Your enemy must make a response roll, and you must do so as well.
When you have both done your response rolls (Or you do both, oh well) You subtract the higher number against the lower number for the tilt. The lower number is the one who loses.

To add Approach bonuses, you must spend a Fate Point.
As for how you get fate points, I don't know.

This is just the simplified version of what I saw on Thin's rule section.
Edit_2: This was slightly pointed at Dmatter, But with no edge. All I ask is that things are done properly.

I think so... I know the basic plot...
I'll have a look in the main thread and see if I can catch up.

Edit: Amber, Gwen, Astran, Lance, Decipio, Takamura, Alex and Skotino. Ransacked Guildhall. Quicksilver fight. Spades. Got it. (I think)

Btw: I got a few newb questions that need answering.
-Can anyone else take control of my character?
-when two characters fight, do the two people involved post their roll results until one wins?
-Does it take a fate point to quit a fight?
-Does it take a fate point to introduce your character

Sorry about all the questions!

I do have a large idea, but it's not a plot. I'm toying with ditching the Fate system until I figure out how to use it properly in a story-based roleplaying game, because it's really holding me back from advancing the plot.

I'd also like to implement the "player=GM" concept, where players are granted several key GM powers, and my job becomes to give the story direction. For example, players can create & manage NPCs, scenarios, and settings at will, and while the GM also has those powers, his primary role would be to veto player actions that disrupt the plot flow.

I've seen a few roleplaying games work this way, and they tend to last quite a while when they are managed correctly. I've had relatively little experience managing that kind of game myself, which means we'll be treading new ground.

Any tips for me?

Wait, really?

Oops, So I've GM'd a few times before in creating npc's?
Uhhh... Nevermind.

Anyway, Those all sound like good ideas. However, I think I like the FATE system enough to not agree with the first one.
Being the GM, you could always add bonuses to your rolls. And if necessary, you could roll for others to continue the plot. Just... Do something within that character's background, eh?

Anyway. WRITER'S BLOCK!

Instead of giving players total control, it would be better to sill keep a grasp on what the scene looks like. This way a player can't go about giving full detail of a room. Only to have another say that something, which was not described before, suddenly appearing out of nowhere. This means we would have to follow the concept of common sense.

Secondly: The Roll system becomes null because if player's have that kind of power they can just cheat the roll. Honestly the Roll system is based on luck right now, and the honor system so its easy to cheat. That being state it is best to keep the GM staff right now to one or two people so we can keep check's and Balance's on things. Worse case being a GM can describe a room using common since to give no one in peculator an advantage.

Third and last; you need to keep the story flowing forwards. Even now with the asult on the Spades' guild. It is currently the plot of the story, the first arch, ya Skotino's a Prick for killing all those noobs, but still its the current plot and we need to get that out of the way which means we still need to get those who will survive asablished, we need to get a feel for who is really the bad presence, we need to see who the main hero and support will be. Its got a form, we just have to fill in the mold. Currently Skotino looks like a Prick for killing the Spades'. But they where set up to be the bad guys here. So plot twist, the Spades' where the good guys all along.

Thinslayer only said that that several key GM aspects would be given, meaning Several=some.
So, really, They couldn't cheat the roll systems. What I said earlier was just a suggestion.
Anyhow.
I still like the idea of being able to create scenes, which of course cannot be edited any more than the first post.
Also, Adding NPC's.. Well, let me just get an idea in everyone's head about app control.

Name: Eryil
Appearance: Blah, Blah- Stuff.
Weapons: C-Essence Sword + Gun (C for core)
Bio: Is the core.
Some other stuff: Always has +5 to rolls.

No, just no.
Anyway - Plot twist, the guy who hired Skotino was the bad guy the whole time.
Also- Rules can be edited, and they can always be molded and added to- After all, We're talking about the basic frame of rules that could pop out of nowhere.

The Aspects are supposed to be bonuses that you can invoke with Fate points. I recommend re-working them.

To make a tanky character, I suggest the following Approaches:

  • Careful: 2 (uses for a tank are obvious)
  • Clever: 1 (you don't survive well if you're not clever)
  • Flashy: 2 (don't underestimate the power of cool moves!)
  • Forceful: 3 (you are so "forceful" or "powerful" that nothing hurts you)
  • Quick: 1 (speed is life)
  • Sneaky: 0 (unnecessary for a tank)

Sorry! I'm such a massive newb at this, so please forgive any mistakes I may make.

I'll work on rectifying it (hey, nothing a little edit can't fix.) and I'll look over the rules once more. Again, really sorry!

Edit: right, you weren't kidding when you said trained merc, were you? My character is out of vitality (jeez, Alfreton. For your first fight pick a highly trained expert. Genius.) and I've got a few more annoying questions about what happens to my character.

-is he still alive?
-is his future now in the hands of other characters?
-is there anything I can do to bring him back?

More newb questions yay! (Wow, I really am bad at this. Sorry.)

One set at a time. So lets answer these one at a time.

-Yes he is still alive, he was not part of the Spades' so he is not of there consern for the most part.

-In a since, but no this is your character's first 'STRESS' mark. I would assume like everyone you have a limit of Stress marks before you are out of the game for good. (GAME OVER ENDING)

-You passed out, you just need to wait till you recover a bit. Only Thinslayer can say for sure when you get the Stress mark removed. (I assume a reasonable in-game time for recovery)

Now, since the Vet Mercs. are on my side let me handle there roles from now on alright? Thats really about it, you did fine for the most part.

A few things still need changing. First off, you may need to re-read my section on Aspects. They aren't just descriptions; you can put that elsewhere. Aspects are descriptions that you can invoke and use. How would you invoke "Purist" in combat, for example? You can't exactly say, "She attempts to fight 'Purely' for a +2 bonus." Find Aspects you can use.

Secondly, the Appearance doesn't quite work for me. I'm not a big fan of characters resembling in-game knights because it severely limits the range of plausible expressions they can use. It would be better if you could provide an out-of-armor humanoid appearance. Verbal descriptions are fine, but I usually prefer images. :3

I like the character's personality & bio, though. Tough, justice-oriented characters are in rather short supply around here, and are an excellent fit for the plot I have in mind. That, and I'm personally a bit biased towards them. :P

Name: Kyrlian
Gender & Birthdate Female, 2989.
Appearance & Gear: http://www.kili-no-fansub.com/images/Saber9.jpg
Aspects: Zealot (One can fight Zealously? Right?) Fearless (That works right?) Sacrifice.
Approaches:
Careful: 2
Clever: 1
Flashy: 2
Forceful: 3
Quick: 1
Sneaky: 0
Bio & Personality:

Bio: Kyrlian has been fighting on this broken piece of junk for as long as she can remember. Many knights fell by her side while she has helped others reach high within the order. She has always been a valued asset to the order as she rarely fails her mission. It is believed that she would sacrifice herself to complete a mission without a second thought if the mission was worth it. On the field she was always seemed like a marvel. Her strategy is always to get the attention of all opponents and endure their attacks while her team mates find out the solution to the fight or until she defeats the opponents in a smart way. She is reknowned for a particular mission in her resume. A mission where success was survival, three of her fellow knights lying in pain on the ground, she held on and pushed the fight away from them, to then come back and carry them to safety.

Personality: The mission come's first. Kyrlian has always told herself that. She is very selfless self sacrificing. She believes that the order must prevail for the future knights to have something to look at in the future. She will not hesitate to go by self inflicting pain solutions if it means succeeding in the mission. She backs down before no enemies. She is smart, cold and calculating alot of the people bellow her dislike being under her command for that reason they believe they would be pawns in her plans.

Edit: Thanks for all the time you're putting to help me out, it's my first roleplay within that system, I'm more used to pathfinder.

To be extremely frank with you, I have no idea where you're going with this, since...

1. I know you're taking creative liberties with this and throwing in what you think is best, but are we seriously gonna go to battles with "Elder Wurms" and Apocreans right off the bat? There's no build-up, no execution of plot, no good reason to even think of fighting them, much less encounter them. Sure, Wurms can become a problem for Cradle, and maybe they're not well known, but then suddenly Apocreans get to travel wherever they so please, whenever they want to hunt whoever? I know you want to move the plot somewhere, but Apocrea BARELY concerns what the main conflict of this RP is all about. I don't see a plausible way Takamura is going to avoid them and go back to the MAIN PLOT unless the Apocreans unreasonably leave him alone, when by all reasons his soul, which would be tainted by sins of all kinds, has more value then Alex's. And the Apocreans are known as the Harvesters of Souls.

2. I originally had a plan that Takamura would head back to Morai base that was SUPPOSEDLY HIDDEN AND WELL GUARDED, drop off a Squire he captured, and return to Haven in about 10~ posts. I let you take the reins for a little bit for some action, which, in a more sensible way, SHOULD'VE led to a 1 on 1 fight between the two / Alex vs. mooks battle. That would end with, at most, FIVE POSTS if we kept the rolls the way they were going. Instead, we've dragged this for FAR too long. Again, with #1, I know you want to be a little creative, but isn't this just a little too ridiculous for the VERY beginning of the roleplay? I wouldn't mind de-railing just a LITTLE once we're in the middle or towards the end, but really?

3. Absences. I can accept a day, or even up to half a week, but being gone for more than an entire week between posts has to stop. If you don't have the time for it, say that you don't have the time, and you can help all the other players go up to speed. If you do have the time, then please use that time efficiently. Because of this, only TWENTY-FOUR PERCENT OF ALL POSTS WERE MADE BY THE TWO OF US COMBINED.

Compared to the other players, who can advance much more easily and smoothly, we're lagging pretty badly.

@Raigaizam: I'm inclined to agree with Feline-Grenadier on this one. The Morai were supposed to be the center of attention, not the Wurms. If you need someone to fight, fight the Morai. I dumped the Wurm fight for a reason.

@Darkwatck: I agree. The thing is, I don't exactly feel like doing dice rolls, but that's precisely what's called for in the next sequence. So I'm kinda psyching myself into it. :P

PvP

I've clean-forgotten to add PvP rules. It happens to be another item holding me back from participation. -_-

Player characters do not have a "difficulty" rating like NPCs do. Instead, PCs face off against each other's stat sheets. Suppose we have the following stats for two characters (P1/P2):

Crf: 3/0
Clv: 2/1
Fsh: 2/1
Ffl: 1/2
Quk: 1/2
Snk: 0/3

P1 decides to be Careful, launching a guarded sword strike against P2. Ideally, P2 would respond with an extra-Sneaky attack to get past the carefully-crafted defenses. What's stopping P1 and P2 from just spamming the same strong attack over and over again?

Good point. The results of each kind of attack should depend on the type of attack used. Careful attacks won't be as powerful as Forceful ones (while being more effective), and Sneak attacks should probably hog-wallop Flashy attacks. So how do we balance this?

I like a good story. How about this: your default bonus is 0. If you don't care to write about the fight and just wanna crunch numbers, you don't get to take advantage of your character's natural bonuses. Furthermore, the way you write about the fight determines which ones you get; when both players have made their moves, *I* do the dice-rolling and account for the writing quality when applying the bonuses. You may not get your maximum bonus if the writing isn't top-notch. So to cite the above example, suppose P1 can't think of a good way to write a Careful attack worthy of a +3 but has a really cool Flashy attack in mind. If he tries to write the Careful move anyway, he might only get, say, a +1 bonus for his trouble, when if he'd stuck with Flashy, he could have gotten +2.

This way, combat should be varied and interesting.

Opinions?

Maybe the players could use fate points to;

-restore vitality?
-Turn the battle tables in their favour?

Maybe there could be another forum thingy in the Treasure Vault for character apps which are updated by the players whenever damage is taken in a battle or a fate point is lost or something?

Also, will players both attack at the same time? Or will it just go back and forth, (like p1: attack, p2: counter, p1: defend?) starting with who 'drew' first, perhaps?

Anyway, I love the idea of better writing = better chance of winning, and the system so far looks quite good to me.

Rock, Paper & scissors. Think about it like this, the Fate System was installed to give a Play a slight advantage when they are in a bad situation right? Well lets look at the aspects.

Careful

Clever

Flashy

Forceful

Quick

Sneaky

Their are six correct? Well lets line the Six up with there counter parts.

Careful::Flashy

Clever::Quick

Flashy::Sneaky

Forceful::Quick

Quick::Careful

Sneaky::Forceful

When we look at it like this, we can say that the game turns to more of a RP&S game since it works out like this. It will have to play on the play here to take the aspects they have. Now they can use the aspects they have points in, say P1 has a Three in Forceful so they are going to use there Forceful skill. Now this being state P2 has a Three in Quick, but quick can't counter Forceful since its a all out attack. Being quick might help dodge but it won't help if the Forceful attack lands. Now they can use there Quick to dodge, but P2 only has a 1 for Sneaky. Depending on the role (and how good they are Sneaky could win. And if the Sneaky attack doesn't win they would take a damage point and the fight goes on. I say if we leave things like this, they get a +1 for using its counter. But if its not even trying they don't get a +1 bounce.

Thanks

EDIT: Since this is a play-by-post game, it's necessarily turn-based. Players must always show how they defended and how they attacked. Try to tell a story instead of simply telling us which aspects were used.

I like Darkwatck's thinking. Of course, we'll have to expand on it, because battles are more interesting if players are forced to change tactics.

The more I write about this, the more I think the Fate system needs to be reworked for PvP. How do you get players to change tactics without getting them into a rut? With all the numbers displayed and out in the open, being clever doesn't factor into this at all.

Suppose players mailed me their Aspect distributions instead of posting them publicly. This way, we insert an element of unknown into the battle. To keep it unknown, I'll still have to do the battle calculations, and only the results will be posted. The only problem with that system is that battles with NPCs (or GM'd PCs) will no longer be fair, as I'll have all the information but no one else will. You'd basically have to trust me to make the fights fair and engaging, which is essentially my job as GM.

Now let's implement Darkwatck's system into the above. Counters shouldn't override stat distributions, so they need to have effects outside dice rolls. Suppose a successful counter yields a "critical hit," which causes a minor consequence instead of the normal stress. This also means that the character does NOT take a stress hit. Weird, perhaps, but important for balancing.

Second Character in play!

Lyra Nyriandra

Female, 02/02/2998

Equipment : Spiral Culet, Spiral Crescent Helm, Calibur

Aspects: Spritely Vigor; Conditioning (Basic : +1); Clairvoyant

Approaches:

Careful : 0
Clever : 0
Flashy : 1
Forceful : 1
Quick : 2
Sneaky : 0

Bio and Personality :

Lyra was just a Squire in the Order, one of the latest to be awoken from her pods. She didn't think she was of any importance; in fact, she had forgotten if she was of any importance. Part of her memory was damaged, presumably from the long time she had spent in stasis, and everything between her military training to escaping the fall of the Skylark was wiped.

In other words, she lost the bonds she had created with the Spiral Order for a quarter of her life. With only the mind of actually getting to Cradle, the Order had a hard time trying to process into her head that she was already 16, not 12, and that she was on another world entirely. Her maturity, gone with the memories she once had, pushed her into a corner of fear of the unknown. It was hard for her to swallow the fact that she'd never see her childhood friends again, and what little camaraderie she had on the Skylark was long-forgotten by today's Vanguards and Champions. Her swordplay was unwieldy, and her gunmanship was at an even lesser level, much less demolition training.

With the fact that four violent, massive Guilds had already rivaled the power of the Order, and that the Morai insurgency had returned...Lyra felt as though she had walked into a new nightmare. Nevertheless, because she enlisted as a field infantryman in the past, she would have to be put up with.

Unsurprisingly, her muscle memory came back within weeks of waking, and unlike most others, she was able to quickly surpass the performance of an average infantryman. She was tasked with handling a resurgence of Snarbolax populations within the Gloaming Wildwoods, but something far more sinister had awaited her.

A man in grey, donning a chapeau, had his weapon brandished against her.

And now she was in a cave, seeing triple images of distorted faces and monsters that she never thought she'd imagine. If she fainted, she woke up to a smoldering fire that lulled her into a blank daze, and a whiff of that awful phial made her heart race like never before.

And then she began to see strange things; strange preconceptions of events unfolding. Spades fighting, a woman of white complexion leading the Order, and most importantly, the man in grey approaching Haven, ill intent in his heart.

Ugh, the this is going makes me feel as though me and Hexlash aren't related to the main adventure at all. I can keep going, but still.

Turn back then xD The only way to get back into main story would be to return to haven and learn about the problem. However the problem is not public yet thus IDK how the Morai caught wind of it. Only a hand full of people in haven know about whats going on thus its still a private matter. There was a blackout and the mass of outside input to the Spades' guild hall was shut down. Even the Guild Member's of the Spades' barely even know whats going on.

Eh.

I just made up the Infiltrators on a whim to say "I WANT IN ON THIS CONFLICT RELEVANT TO PLOTZ". Not in the mood for dilly-dallying any more.
