Hi,
tired of buying a pig in a poke? Not sure if that new armor goes well along with your colors? Want to preview an entire set of gear, but unable to find a basil that has all of the recipes? Well, in this case, I have something for you:

http://www.onyxbits.de/spiralspy

SpiralSpy is a wrapper around the Modelviewer of the Clyde library, on which SpiralKnights is based. In other words: it allows you to assemble and preview the knight of your dreams in the color of your choice.

DISCLAIMER: SpiralSpy is neither endorsed nor supported by ThreeRings. It is provided as-is without any guarantees or warranties whatsoever (in other words: use at your own risk).

No worries, I won't vouch for anything (as implied in the disclaimer). I fully understand, that offers like this sound too good to be true (and most of the time they are. Hence: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK). However, if you want to make an informed decision about whether or not to trust Spiral-Spy, can give you the following pointers:

  • I publish the application under my real name, which you can find in the website's imprint (for this reason, I do not post here under the name of my knight. I really don't want to get support calls in the middle of a run or angry emails from people, telling me how much I suck ingame).
  • The sourcecode for SpiralSpy can be found here: https://github.com/threerings/clyde The only addition I made, beyond compiling the source and resolving dependencies, was a starter class (de.onyxbits.spiralspy.SpyApp) that does the configuring part. If you don't trust that class, you can still start the modelviewer manually.
  • I also offer another application called ScenePainter (http://scenepainter.onyxbits.de) for Threerings's other game "Yohoho!Puzzle Pirates", which has been in good standing for years.

000 Should endorse this or build their own

If ya'll want accessories and whatnot to be the current end-game content, you should either endorse a third-party viewer or make your own. Your average customer (and yes, I'm in the hole) won't have the time or resources to properly preview everything. If you would like to be awful, save the rarest.

I can vouch for the quality of the YPP application, and I'm glad to see you have crated something great for this game also. Thanks for both of them! ^.^

I seem to recall a thread about papercraft. What was it about? Printing the models on papersheet, so you could fold them into real world 3D paperdolls? SpiralSpy is most certainly able to extract and display any model from the game (oh right, did I mention? You can have the chance to meet the tortodrone again!). I have no idea how to translate them to papercraft schematics, though. As for backgrounds: Thats a horse of an entirely different color. I have absolutely no idea how the SceneEditor is suppose to work.

As I said in my second post, I also offer another application which does something very similar as SpiralSpy. ThreeRings never complained about it and even gave me permission to use YPP artwork on my website. So I am in good faith that SpiralSpy will not be a problem either. I will, however, comply in case, Threerings requests it to be taken down.

To be honest, I haven't the faintest clue. I am not a steam user. I would suggest searching your harddisk for a file called "projectx-pcode.jar" (thats the main part of the game). Drop SpiralSpy in the directory above it. Then doubleclick the jar.

PS: I only have Linux, so feedback from MacOSX/Windows users whether or not SS works on these platforms would be appreciated.

I'm on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate and the client works well. The only problem I've seen is that any of the dropdown menus seem to completely break the UI. It's still usable, but it becomes a bit of a jumble.

Steam users (like myself) can plop the file in \Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\spiral knights

You mean the File, Edit and View menu? thats ok, you don't need anything in there (in fact, you are well advised to stay away from the Edit menu anyways. At best, your head will explode, at worst, you might have to redownload the game).

PS: Im currently logged in as "Spiral-Spy" in case there are questions.

Thats "normal". The controls panel grows dynamically in size as needed by the editor components. The split panel, however, does not automatically adapt to that. You have to drag the slider in the middle to the size of your liking.

Is this still in the virtual machine? The only thing, I can think of right now to fix it would be to force the panel to redraw be either iconifying the entire window or by moving the splitpane slider.

Nicely done OP. For some time I wanted to make something similar, but got lazy with OOO's libraries. Mostly because compiling Clyde required compiling a lot of other libraries since they didn't keep the compiled releases and directories up to date.
