Awesome program! I love it.

Awesome program! I love it. This is what I have been wanting for a while because it is too hard to see all the hard work that went into the models for this game in that tiny little character window in-game.

Question to Killys or anybody else. Can you change the background in SpiralSpy or are you guys doing that in another program? Thought I saw somebody else ask same question, but maybe I am too dense to understand what the response was...

Thanks

Behold, my ultimate creation!

A devilite wielding 2 devilites, one of which is wielding a devilite which is in turn wielding a devilite boss; the other is wielding a devilite wielding another devilite and snarbolax.

I like to think it'll be the final boss of a fiend strata someday. It'll throw chains of devilites at you, which will spawn more devilites. And Snarbolax. Oh god.

It's also kinda silly that the model viewer allows this to happen, though it certainly is fun. I also like applying different textures to weapons. 5* Brandish model with the triglav texture just looks cool.

Might as well...

...add into the picture storm. However I bring forth a picture I have edited heavily, thus it looks rather high quality, I ensure you that there is nothing in the picture that has not been seen in game (or for the matter, anything that isn't technically in game (for example, I have a Volcanic Feather, which might not have been seen yet, but it is in game)).

Without further delay, I present to you what happens when you get carried away with SpiralSpy...

http://i.imgur.com/Ni0Ob.png

@Bluescreenofdeath Yes, you can change the background, first you need to ensure you can see the environment, then go to preferences. Select New Environment Model, then click config. Then look in rsrc>world>skybox. Some effects will multiply to infinity unless there is a solid background (such as skybox_skywall.dat) to prevent it from doing it. Just mess with the different effects until you get an environment of your choice. I used multiple effects to create the background in the above picture.

@SpiralSpy:

I'm running Win7 64-bit, actually, and I know I've got a recent (probably the most recent) JRE installed.

The SpiralSpy .jar goes in the main directory, correct? I checked, and I do have a projectx-pcode.jar in the code folder of Spiral Knights.

I reread the instructions on the Onyxbits site, and noticed that the comamnd-line launcher is only for Linux/OSX. Derp.

I have honestly no idea. I suspect it would require some fiddling around with the classpath, so the audio files can be found. I can look into this, if you can show me an example of... erm ... missing sound. The Modelviewer usually displays missing resources in a red instead of a black font. So, if its a resolver problem, hunt for red items in the controls (screenshots preferred).

Go to Edit|Preferences and load a model from world/skybox as an environmental model.

@Grompearl
> .......is that what you mean? :o

Not exactly, but I'll simply guess "Windows 7" from those specs. Open your explorer and let it search for a file called "projectx-pcode.jar". Form there, go up one folder level and drop spiralspy-1.0.jar in there. Then double click it. Hint: You really need to understand how to navigate directories in order to make use of SS.

That is correct.

It can be adapted for windows (but you shouldn't be forced to use the commandline in the first place):
Open a shell inside the main spiral spy directory (I think, theres a shortcut by holding control while rightclicking into the folder). In it, type:

java -jar spiralspy-1.0.jar

Note: this is shorter than the commandline on my website. The longer version actually bypasses SpiralSpy and starts the Modelviewer directly (SS is just a wrapper around Threerings code that starts the application and and configures it for SpiralKnights).

Ok this is awesome :D But I'm having a problem. I can't get the firebreak helm's base (everything except the plumes) in the right colour.. If I change colour manually it just goes bright orange, and even if you change them manually you can't change all of the orange. I'm sure there must be a preset option for the firebreak helm's base's colour in there somewhere since the game uses it but I can't find it >_< Annoying since it's the helm I want to use in my costume and the only one I can't get the right colour

Also, long shot, but is there a way to add a background texture? Like floor or something? Or a way to extract the model with a transparent background, like for graphic editing?

Just one of those situations where I find stuff out seconds after asking.

If you want to meddle with the protohelms like me but couldn't figure the lot, you're probably using the wrong model. Look for the model_proto.dat!

Personally, I'm still having the problem as apparently proto_model only has purple details. Hrmn.

don't use proto model. Use the helmet options, (not sure if we're allowed to name paths here), find doubleploom folder and use the model.dat there, you can change the color a little. You can do more recoloring if you mess with model_recolor.dat Red, Blue, Green options show up below that. I haven't bothered to figure it all out so I'll leave that to you. I'm just assuming you are wanting to toy with the tailed helm, if you wanted to mess with another proto helm sorry for my specific advice.

For those who haven't been able to figure out anything, take a look at this. I'd like to note, this video is NOT for those who've been messing with this already, and I don't know how to do everything. And this isn't a tutorial either, just a visual overview.
Full screen viewing is recommended.

I am not sure, I understand what you want? As far as I know, a texture is a "background" that spans over a shape. Extracting models for graphic editing? How do you want to edit? With which software? If you are thinking of The Gimp or Photoshop, simply disable the grid in the view menu and set the background color to a "transparent color" (GIF style).

@Five-hundred
> To change the player color of some of the armor you need to click edit, which is a pain, and I can't find out how to scale things, I even got a few errors that i'll post if i get them again.

Chances are, you are using the wrong model file. Most .dat files describe model parts. Only a few of them actually combine parts into the complete model and expose parameters like color or variant. In fact, this is the reason, why I did not write a modelviewer of my own: You simply have to deduce from the filename what is what.

@Negimasonic

Nice vid!

> I was more noticing the speed..at the default 1.00 they seem bloody fast, maybe that's why we never see them walk around haven...

I think, that global speed setting is actually a percentage of some kind of a world clock that ticks in the background. The server then tells the client at which speed a model moves (when it moves).

@Rangerwill
> Hey, sorry for being a noob with a computer, but how and where is the Spiral Knights Directory? I am on a mac OSX 10.6.8 here, is the directory the actual game? Help please. Thanks!

Use your finder to locate a file called "projectx-pcode.jar". Once you have it, move up one folder, drop spiralspy-1.0.jar there and doubleclick it.
The path should be something like ~/Library/Application Support/Spiral Knights
