Double-clicked the jar rather than tried the command line; got it working with Steam/Windows 7 now.
I think you're onto something Engie.
[No spoilers, please.]
@Loudmute being the first one to question its validity, I can say with certainty that the site and application are both secured.
The shroom hat is back, saw that in another forum. Somebody's been peeking into the game files. ._.
I will edit this post and remove it myself soon.
I suggest that I leave this thread.

Aside from all of my post, I like it, thanks for making this. :D
Is this a bug or is the program incomplete?
http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp138/AABattery/Raphy/Picture1-1.png
I get the feeling if a GM comes in here all those posting pics might get in trouble. ;_____;
i downloaded it but how do i use it?
im not steam
no idea how long i've been searching for a program like this, awesome job, thanks Spiral-Spy
Technically speaking you shouldn't be reprimand for using the program as you aren't editing the files and for all intents and purposes it's no different from looking into the game files which OOO cannot stop you from doing. What IS likely to get a great deal of you in trouble though is posting screenshots on the forum, and possibly the distribution of the program itself.
Regardess this is really cool, nice job Spiral-Spy.
@Glowing-Ember
"Double-clicked the jar rather than tried the command line; got it working with Steam/Windows 7 now."
The instructions on my website were/are wrong. The file is, of course, called spiralspy-1.0.jar, not spiralspy-DEV.jar (this is a copy and paste error on my behalf). Sorry for the inconvenience, I was kinda in a rush getting the thing out of the door.
@Loudmoute
"So this is not a virus site right?"
Well, it went kinda viral :). I did not anticipate so many people would be interested :).
@Reinforced-Tin-Man
"Is this a bug or is the program incomplete?"
That looks bugged, but this is a part of the software, you should stay away from anyways. It allows you to actually assemble/configure/edit models and in result, potentially break the game client (there is also no documentation whatsoever about how that stuff works).
@ALL
Thanks for all the kudos! I feel, however, compelled to stress out (as we seem to have some misunderstandings here), that the credits for the ModelViewer application go entirely to Three Rings. The thing, you are playing with there is their code, not mine. All I did was to download their clyde library (which is published under a BSD license), find the application, I wanted to write, readily in there and then decided to save myself a lot of time by only making a bootstrap for it. Not an easy task, but far less impressive than some of you might think.
For those, who are interested, this is the only code addition, I made: http://pastebin.com/0LYEUsRV The rest is more or less just config stuff and bundling, so less tech savvy folks can have a go at it, too.
So, as far as the TOS aree concerned, I neither reverse engineered anything, nor did I actually make a tool. This, of course, is up for interpretation, but I'm in good faith that OOO will see things similarly, as they have been lenient about that kind of thing in the past.
Fan art is a powerful marketing tool, after all and SpiralSpy is probably a nice tool to use for updating the wiki, too. And who knows... Maybe this way some people will spend money on energy to acquire an outfit, they would not have been interested in otherwise.
Words of warning, though:
- As cool as Engiealt's wood gnome knight is, you should probably not use SpiralSpy to post spoilers. That makes the Devs unhappy (would you want to have someone walking around and tell people, what you put into your xmas presents?)
- Stay away from any part that is labeled "Edit". You don't need that stuff to view models. SpiralSpy contains the unabridged ModelViewer, used to develop the game and can therefore mess things up.
- If used improperly, SpiralSpy will defrost your fridge, shave your cat and drown your goldfish. So: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
PS: I currently don't have any plans for further development, but depending on feedback, I might be persuaded otherwise.
I might play with this a bit if I'm free at home tonight. Seems interesting(i have yet to try it though).
I wonder would this help the people who wanted to make movies:
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/12050
And a dev said somewhere here that Clyde has exporters for Max
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/10442
@Negimasonic
No, SpiralSpy is definitely not a basis for creating movies. At least not as long as your are not a total masochist.
> Oh, btw. forum rules say something about not posting spoilers. Please don't ruin surprises by posting screenshots of yet undiscovered content.
Indeed they do. So folks, please make sure that any images you link to are of content that has already been released.
Also please do not upload images of unreleased items to the wiki, Equinox will have to delete them... You don't want to get him angry and lock uploading...
This is great app thanks for Your work sir. However it can crash or hang when loading some .dat files.

protip: you can have the models in the sword stance by loading the mode_level.dat and use the ready sword animation
Gah! I wish I had this program before now! I would have loved to have been able to go and play around with the monsters so I could perfect their designs when I made them in flash. D: Ah well, it will come in handy when I create a Zombie Knight in Flash. >:D
@Glowing-Ember
Thanks for the simple fix. I don't know why that made a difference. >_>
I can't run it for some reason, receiving an exception. Tried using the command line command too, but I get the same results.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. Tried running as Admin too. I have a path set up to java. Maybe I have the jar in the wrong location? That folder is where my "Play Spiral Knights" link is.
java.lang is a default java package, if you're application cannot find it maybe it means you've put your jar file in the wrong directory.
I saw that some people on steam were havin' issues, so here I am to help you all!
This Screenie of my SpiralSpy "install" shows steam user where to plant it, just create a shortcut to it on the desktop and you're good to go :D

Also, had lots of fun playing with this, putting glasses on my Deadly Virulisk, and attaching a poison Devilite's pitchfork to my back in place of a shield, not to mention the hours I've spent thinking of new costume ideas, damn I'm so vein
I have the downloaded client rather than the Steam install, but the files match up. I see version.txt, proxy.txt, projectx.log, etc... so that is the right directory. Maybe it only works with the Steam client and not the downloaded one? Anyone have it running on there?
I have the downloaded client and it worked fine. Windows 7 64-bit as well.
For myself, the directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights > spiralspy-1.0.jar
I just put it in the above Spiral Knights folder, ensured the jar was running from JE by default (which it wasn't before) and double clicked.
While there are other files like version.txt, proxy.txt etc, the viewer uses data from the folders in "Spiral Knights/rsrc/item/gear"
From here, you can access the different dats for armor, helm, accessories. I'm sure you can navigate to other folders for the scenes etc. that others have done though.
Getting the same results as Culture did. I'm using a x86_64 Linux system.

spiralspy-1.0.jar is also in my spiral knights folder.
I got to play with this a bit at school, after embarassingly failing to run it at command line (caused a hang and annoying beep in the middle of class), I just double clicked the spiralspy-1.0.jar and it ran with no problems, Win XP.
@Flaame, um its supposed to be called "spiralspy-1.0" not "spiralspy-DEV" so if you're entering that, perhaps that might be your problem (PS I'm not using linux so ignore me).
@else
Anyone figure out like how to use the weapon attack animations?
I know we can use
model.dat
model_level.dat
for the main model, but everything else I seem to try just crashes the program.
How do I "put this in the spiral knights directory"?
Oh I don't got it.
I'm not using steam, with a windows 7 computer.
I found this one thing and the preivew, they each have four more folders in them and allot of other things, PNG's, DAT's, whatever. Tried all the folders and such, confused O_O
Ohh is it this C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin?
I realized that I tried to download steam then changed my mind, forgot to uninstall the old files 'e_e
Oopse poopsie, banned until tomorrow morning. But really? They're in the game files, available for public download, so that isn't really a leak. I also named the link "spoilers" in case someone didn't want to have anything spoiled for them. So really, that is a very stupid ban.
Okay, so I finally got it working.
Except entering the command given from the website brings up no model for me.
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6608/screenshotthreeringsmod.png
What am I doing wrong?
So I've put this in my SK directory (/steam/steamapps/common/spiral knights) and it keeps telling me to "Please put the .jar in the SpiralKnights directory".
The commandline commands don't work either - it spits out some cryptic error.
Someone care to help?
I didn't even realize I was posting a spoiler.
You guys and your similar tilesets.
I've been playing around with this tool a bit, and I freaking love it. It also makes me really regret setting my character colour to blue instead of cobalt now that I can see how well a Nameless Poncho goes with the Blue Chapeau. D:
After messing around with accessories to see what I'd like to stake out the AH for, I've figured out what each thing does and how the naming conventions work. model-preset.dat is the model of each corresponding accessory. The Colour dropdown options correspond to the prefix/colour scheme on each accessory (toasty/cool/drab/etc). model-recolor.dat is the model for prismatic items. The Colour dropdown for it is for every base player colour you can choose. model-XXX are special models for the accessory type, where the XXX is the 3 letter code for the prefix (example: the flower has a model-vol.dat file, which is the model for the Volcanic Flower accessory). The only thing I can't determine with this tool is where each accessory type is slotted (top/side/etc), and for that, we can consult the wiki.
The following table matches the 3 letter code to each prefix:
gld regal
blu cool
pnk fancy
red toasty
grn drab
prp dusky
hvy heavy
dvn divine
vol volcanic
Hopefully this'll make it easier for everyone to mix and match the right accessories, and maybe help fill out the wiki.
What did you change to get around that class exception? I still haven't gotten it to run.
Ive been looking around and i cant find the spiral knights folder or where ever the spiral spy file needs to go.......
*Launches program, puts on Jelly Suit, Toupee and Mustache. Notices that mustache clips with Jelly suit.*

I'm disappointed.
Wow, lots of support calls to answer...
@Culture
> D:\Users\default.user\AppData\Roaming\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights>spiralspy-1.0.jar
That seems somehow wrong. I don't know how W7 handles these things, but normally, you'd start a JAR with the java.exe program, not directly. In any case, you should try to simply doubleclick the spiralspy-1.0.jar in your explorer (after making sure, JAR is associated with your Java runtime - If its not, right click on the Jar, select "Open with" and JRE from the list of suggested applications).
In any case, it should not matter whether or not you use steam.
@Flamee
As Negimasonic pointed out: it's spiralspy-1.0.jar, not spiralspy-DEV.jar (my bad, I had it wrong on the download page). You should not need to use the commandline, though. Just doubleclick the JAR.
@Orangeo
I'm as puzzled as you. The only thing, I could tell you is that you should learn to navigate the filesystem before trying to use spiralspy, as you will be hopelessly lost otherwise.
@Engie
Yep, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Seems like Eurydice was determined to make a point here. Remember: It's one thing if you explore the resourcefolder for yourself, as you are prepared to find surprises there. A user "accidentally" stumbling upon your screenshots (they could be relinked under a different name, posted to chat, etc.) potentially lacks the context information you have, likely resulting in a lot of nag threads about when this or that gear will be released.
I loved your hick knight scene, though :).
@Flamee^2
You have to load the file rsrc/characters/pc/model.dat (or model_level.dat). Thats the main model file for knights. Looks like you did not replace the slashes with backslashes. But I really advice you not to start SS from the commandline. Thats for people, who are very familiar with java.
@Hasturhasturhastur
posting the crytic error message would help (along with your system specs - I assume MacOSX?). You get the message box whenever the file "code/projectx-pcode.jar" cannot be located relative to spiralspy-1.0.jar
@Grompearl
Please share your system specs.
Hello everyone!
I was just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to post a screenshot of a knight in a vog cub cap sporting a flower and/or a com unit.
I'm not having much luck finding people in game to get a preview of it before I purchase one.
I swear I posted in this forum before for the same request so apologies ahead of time if I doubled posted.
Much appreciated!
Gremlins look so sad when I look at them in that viewer...
Why don't you download the program and see it for yourself? You'll be able to get much more detail than from a screenshot.
[No spoilers, please.]
