As far as I'm concerned, until we get The Core, this game isn't complete. And no, The Core isn't the end of Spiral Knights altogether, so don't give me any crap about "Oh, but no more content after The Core, it's the swan song of this game." No, it's not.
Expansion Mission packs unlockable with CE?
So when do shadow keys become a REASONABLE price? If we have to pay that much just to GET to the shadow bosses, can't we waive the usual 5* crafting fee? Stuff like the snarbolax suit are just absurdly expensive, given you need the key, the materials, the 4* level 10 gear, the crowns, AND the ce, PLUS beating the boss itself.
such a good players, giving up so quick, and letting them steal your $$$
OOO LIED TO US , first they said it will be unlocked with CE, after relasing first missions they noticed how many ppl do it and out of nowhere changed it to WITH PURCHASE, so noble and fair
keep praising them and approvingg, we will see more of that
If OOO does this I will feel sad.. I have never gone on a SL run but the fact that I, as a f2p could go is enough for me. I plan to go when I have almost everything I want in-game. But this.. I couldn't go if I wanted to. The exceptional thing about SK was that everything was available for free to players unlike many other MMOs, where I felt restricted because I could not access some content. If OOO goes ahead with this as a purchase with dollars only expansion it will not be completely f2p. It would even be fine if they made the cost exorbitant like (3500 ce) because I know that if I roll a lucky UV I could afford it.
Ask some players who have never paid real dollars but are relatively rich (Xairathan, Nicoya and others).
Since I fell asleep before the rarity thing came up, I do think they have "rare" items and those are accessories. Why not get those wings or the wig or whatever? Why does it have to be a piece of useful equipment?
Rarity is superficial and collectors can still collect without the item being rare if they want everything in the game. I just can't see it as anymore than an elitist argument, because it IS boiling down to the fact that other people can get the item and you want to be one of the few with it. We already have quite a few rare things from cosmetic items so I don't see why we need to make certain equipment rare just for the sake of being rare and excluding it from others.
For the guy who bought in anticipation: I know it must feel like a kick in the groin, but you could have probably just made the purchase the day it came out. Now if they were allowing prepaid purchases and then decided the energy couldn't be used when you made it that would be another issue. You didn't buy the expansion and you were trying to put something to it before the expansion even existed. I still think the developers are allowed to change their mind on the payment and pricing system before this thing comes out, mostly because no one's been told how much they have to spend yet. I mean, for all we know, it could have cost way more CE than just buying the expansion pack straight up. You might not even had enough CE if the mission hypothetically cost CE.
The mission UI says to complete rank missions to gain access to expansion. Does that mean we'll have to finish all the rank missions before we can purchase the expansions as well as our friends we gift it to?
You mention rare accessories? Someone also mentioned scissors yes?
I own an original set of wings (they're on my alt's coat), I own scissor blades, its just that featured auctions isnt exactly rare, since eventually we'll just get another one in a few weeks or so.
(I'm also in posession of a Zee Core, but thats going to have future use anyway, and honestly I'd like that to happen, slooms are fun!)
OT: I'm a paying player, and instead of complaining about my rare shield, I'ma talk on topic. I pay for CE on a biweekly basis. say for example I want to craft a lot of 5-star items while my 7-day heat amp is active, or I just need that little bit extra CE to buy something fancy, like scissors. I don't mind using a little of my RL earnings, it used to be alright, but now that I'm getting bored, collecting is all thats motivating me. (I have 2 sets of ancient plate, I dunno why D:) So buying these "DLC"s wont be a major problem for me, but if I'm the only person I know that will buy it, then playing it on my own will be rather, crap to be honest, and I wouldn't mind gifting one if it was the right price. But not all my friends are on steam (For example Asthix, guildies <3), and being able to gift it in-game like the party and battle royale CE packs would be very appreciated. Include that, and I might be okay with this, probably.
They said they'll find a way to gift it on the main client, so you don't have to worry about that. Also we could always make a buddy run thread for the people who did get the expansion.
I don't mind rare items existing but I do mind people protesting an item being more available because they want it to stay rare. Some items are meant to be hard to obtain, I think, like the scissors are very much a novelty item as well as the accessories. But I honestly wouldn't get too bothered if something rare stopped being so; it is the developer's choice on how things are going to be implemented anyways.

There's mine, and I love it :D
There won't be a product if there are no customers, the only people to blame are the people who would actually buy this crap.
Was already on the edge of quitting, this will make it final. P2P customer here, let's hope they 3O gets the idea.
"...the only people to blame are the people who would actually buy this crap."
I really don't think this is a situation we should "blame" others for. If someone wants the content and wants to pay for it, let them have it. I should be able to buy this expansion without others resenting me for not protesting, especially when I don't agree with the protest. They said there are going to be other free content released in the future. They said this is bonus, optional content. It's not something integral to the game. And you know what? I want it. And I shouldn't be told I'm somehow ruining the game because I like their content enough to pay for it.
@Wuvvums
If you don't want to be told anything go hide in a cave. Learn to deal with confrontation already please, talking about 'being mature' in every thread I see but you haven't even developed a shield against other people's opinions/[bullcrap] yet.
We will blame people that actually support companies into growing arrogant enough to directly demand money for something that should be free.
I'm not following the logic behind this. You already have a bought currency (CE) that is used to pay for just about everything in the game. You advertise the game as F2P, and give players a small replenishing amount of this currency and establish an in-game market for this currency, so that everything in the game (except a few fun bonuses) can be obtained without spending money, as long as someone else pays for it. And now, instead of making use of that currency and using the new missions as another sink for it, you're charging additional money for it? That's like running an arcade that charges for games with tokens, and installing a new machine and turning around and telling people they need to buy a gold pass for it, in addition to the tokens. Can't you just...charge more tokens? I'm sure I could find people on Steam that would be willing to trade me an expansion mission pack for CE/cr, but why do I have to jump through hoops to get access to the content?
You don't need paid DLC for a free to play game. If you want it to be an extra downloadable thing on Steam, can't you just make it free DLC and then put some kind of energy cost to get in? Maybe sell an Crimson pass for CE and stick it in with a promo.
Instead of blaming the community for your gripes, why not blame the developer? Attacking other players for spending their money their way isn't going to change anything. In fact, it'll further divide the community. I don't like how P2P resent F2P because they're supposedly complaining and leeching off the system. I'm sick of F2P blaming P2P for having more than them and spending money on a game they enjoy. The game NEEDS both F2P players to keep the MMO from being a barren wasteland and empty and lonely, and the P2P players to keep the game financially supported. There is no reason why people should resent or blame one another for how the game is. The community shouldn't blame each other for how the game is made.
Alright, I think i've heard enough from you. i'm going to the buy the content, happily. You know what else? I'll be gifting these missions to my free to play guildmates, because i can. To you sir? I'll be thrilled when you quit. People like you are intent on blaming everyone else. blaming the people who pay? Good call. WHy not earn some money, and pay for them yourself? Attacking Wuvvums, who has handled this better than i will, is ridiculous. Suck it up, buttercup. Either pay to play them, use steam trade to get them, or dont. Quit your incessant vendetta against 3O and pay to players. I'm done with you, Blaqqie. Done.
...is that OOO sells Shadow Lairs as a separate DLC. In effect, it lets people access SL for a flat rate (which is miles better than the current Shadow Key system).
I don't even care how much it costs
just make it harder....ffs OOO
Is there a way to transfer a Kongregate character to steam? Otherwise I will just have to cross my fingers and hope Sk will allow gifting without steam at some point.. Because as long as a F2p can access it without steam I am not opposed to OOO doing this.
And I think the reason OOO does not want to make it purchasable with CE is that prices will go crazy due to demand.
But please don't make it ridiculous. If you make mobs 1-2 shots full 5* players, the result would be mass spam Shivermist / Stagger Storm and guns.
Wuvvums is right. The community is not the one to blame on all this, except perhaps for the behavior of some of its members. Personally, I just find it in rather poor taste, and certainly evidence of a change on how things are handled internally, for the devs to be teasing us with some truly new content, then putting up a paywall behind it AND then changing it so CE can't be used to directly, with emphasis on "directly" because, well, if what they say is to be trusted, it will be Steam-tradeable and later on in-game tradeable.
As for me, I'll probably and eventually get this content, because at the very least they didn't close up all and every opportunity for me to get it. They just raised the stick a bit higher and shortened the string the carrot is tied to. I don't necessarily like it, and I'm clearly expressing my disagreement, but I won't be making fake threats and leaving the game either because of it.
@Venomousbiohazard, good point in regards to demand. But, as it's an one-time purchase, it would be temporary, and if they wanted they could put in more Crown sinks, just the way the newest featured items on auction are. Maybe Crown-only guild hall enhancements, for example?
The community is not to blame. I find SK has a good community in general, trolls like Blaqqie exist in every MMO.
@Eltia lol in PSO Ultimate mode mostly everything will 2hit you if you're careless and don't resist that damage type
So don't repeat that mistake. Simple and clear right?
Or you are trying to promote how awesome a non-OOO game is in an OOO forum?
Aint even trolling. Unlike being passive-agressive like certain people here I dare to voice my own opinion.
I paid for this game just like you sir, get your facts straight before you let the adrenaline get to you again.
If a company can get away with certain actions it is not because they're evil or powerful, it's because people like you stood by and did/said nothing.
This applies to most of the misery we've been dealing with over the centuries and still are. People can't be bothered to stand up and just go with the flow, mindless sheep. Go youtube George Carlin.
Calling someone crazy or branding him a troll is just another easy way of dealing with people that you can't handle, go be done with life in your own time.
I'm just saying there needs to be some content appealing to the highest players on the totem pole, get what I'm saying?
Shadow Lair was a good start, now we need to step it up.
Unfortunately I don't. In fact, while PSO and SK are both under the Sega umbrella (and hence ultimately breath through the same nostrils), I do not like to see SK to be overshadowed by design decisions made in PSO.
What I said earlier is only a logical conclusion based on a certain design assumption. If you make mobs hit ridiculously hard and called that "hard", there is nothing hard about it because we already have crowd control (Shivermist, Stagger Storm and Vortex) and ranged attacks (e.g. guns) to handle that. So as I said, it's a ridiculous design decision and we already have a non-fun solution for it.
I kind of like how Roarmulus Twins are designed. You can beat it with lower tier equipment and the difficulty does not rely on how hard the mobs hit you.
Blaqqie is p2p. People who support OOO with their money is to blame for letting OOO think they can siphon us like milkcows with paying content.
Okay Blaqqie. Okay. Thank you for supporting such an obviously evil company.
On topic: Nick said they are thinking/have thought of releasing expansion pack trading within the standalone client, but have not said anything about it being developed as of now.
I like Roarmy too. I hope they make more boss battles and dungeons puzzle-like. The puzzle aspect is a nice change of pace.
By the way, I think I would be interested if shadow lairs were made as expansion content too. I think it would be an interesting design choice if expansions were reserved for the paywall content, and made it clear that things like the shadow lairs are meant to be optional, extra, and doesn't detract from the gaming experience if you wish to forgo them. Not sure if the developers are even going to plan to include the shadow lairs in any part of the missions. It would feel a little disjointed if they didn't, actually, why wouldn't there be a mission for something like that?
One of my definitions of trolling is negatively commenting on a persons opinion without providing a well reasoned argument. Calling people mindless sheep isn't polite, it is a personal attack. By the way I do not pay for this game but I support OOOs actions if they make the expansion giftable.
Why the (insert) would you make even more impossible to access Shadow Lairs to f2p players, Wuvvums??? ಠ_ಠ Are you trolling us? At least wait until OOO confirms that we will have that own client gifting support thing, please.
I'm not trolling. I'm saying that the mission content seems to guide you through the games features and has a storyline for each part. If people believe the shadow lairs are integral to the storyline and development of the plot, they should have some inclusion in the missions feature. And it's obvious some of the content that is optional but not integral is going to be made as an expansion, and the shadow lairs are pretty much that; optional. Maybe they can make a mission for shadow lairs but not include the crafting at the end so that people still have incentive to run the actual shadow lairs over that of the mission-based ones.
A tier 3 person like me spend energy and real money for packs mission and dont get so much...well..its depressing =/
The concept of paying once and have unlimited access sounds better than shadow keys.
Still needs some work.
The main issue here isn't that they are charging for a premium service, it's that SK is billed as free to play, with access to all content without having to pay. It is the change in direction that has upset people, more so than the need to fork over cash.
The Gremlin missions will add something important to the game, as King Tinkinzar has been looming in the background for a while. It's a shame that people will either have to pay (like myself) or do stream trades (free players).
To further add to the problem, initially Nick had posted that expansion missions would be obtainable using CE, and now OOO has changed their minds. This is, of course, their prerogative, but it doesn't change the fact that expectations were set, and then changed. People have a right to be upset, and in the case of Exileddread, Blaqqie and a few others, could cause them to quit the game. That is their prerogative as well, and if that is how they feel perhaps they are better served not being in game. A game is meant to be fun, and a break from real life. The moment it ceases to provide entertainment, or the moment it causes negativity in your life should be the moment you leave.
Hopefully, OOO will be able to respond to their clients in a way that allays their complaints, and are able to keep the community as a whole happy. There will always be those who cry foul and compare a large company to fascist regimes the moment something they don't like happens, and in many of those cases nothing can be resolved. Those who are more level headed with their complaints are more likely to be heard, at the very least.
@ Exileddread I sincerely hope we don't lose you, you are one of the best SK has, however I understand why you would say enough is enough.
@Venomousbiohazard
Perhaps I have been discussing with past events in mind. It was not meant.
I hope Three Rings actually reads suggestions and comes with a comprise such as yours.
Venom, he isn't trolling you. Trolling is done to get at people, and to essentially just 'mess with them'... he is making a legitimate point.
He is saying that if we keep buying stuff from OOO, they'll keep making it, and nothing will ever 'get better'. Essentially, that if we continue to purchase shadow keys and purchase DLC like this and purchase ce, then OOO will continue to create content costing ce and USD... which is not something that I'm particularly fond of.
Nor is it a personal attack- saying that the masses are mindless sheep is different from going out of your way to call a single individual a mindless sheep, its like saying "I hate beggars"... kind of.
I can understand that you want what consist F2P to be everything what considers adventure, but I have a question to you?
How long do you play Spiral Knights or even better how long do you need to get enough ce/cr to buy a shadow key (and the missions if they were purchasable with ce)
Let's say you do a Vana farm and you get about 10k cr
Okay, you would need about 1 hour to do the whole run.
So that means if you use only me you can get for 1-2 hours game play about 100-200ce from the Market.
And you must wait about 24hours to do the same thing again with 100me.
So depends on how much the expansion costs in ce you will need lets say 2 weeks (1400ce) to unlock.
All right let's imagine this time you used to play you would use it for a job (for students) and you will get about 10 $/€ for each hour.
You work for only one day for 8 hours and you get already 80$/€
That means you would have enough money to buy the expansions and have some money aside, and that for working only for one single day instead of spending two weeks to farm ce!
What I want to point out is that not only OOO is greedy for money like [insert player name here] say, but also we are, since we rather want free stuff than to buy it, which is normal, who doesn't want some free content?
But guys, once you unlock it you can play as much as you want and who knows, maybe they're will be a "Mission Pack" where you can purchase ce and get some Missions unlocked.
I'm not angry when reading this because it's not the first MMO I've heard where you must pay with real money to get some new content.
I'm used to not to have access in some content if I don't want to pay and as long it's not expensive as hell or some dungeon clones (you know, arcade=arcade in mission) and you get some cool rewards, I would be ready to pay to try it out.
Also Free to Play means not everything is free, it means you can play the game for free but it doesn't tell the content etc is it.
P.S.
It's just my opinion and I can understand that some people are upset.
Anyway, welcome to real life where money rules the world...
P.S.S Let's just wait and see, maybe they will change their minds that we can buy it with ce.
"The concept of paying once and have unlimited access sounds better than shadow keys.
Still needs some work."
Yeah, but you could get shadow keys using energy. I guess probably part of the reason they're going with real money is that there's lots of CE sitting unused waiting to be spent on stuff like the expansion pack missions so it technically isn't profit for them if you're merely spending your resources that you already paid for. Not cool in my opinion though, and it is bad logic, because a lot of people will spend money purchasing new CE to get the expansion missions.
I suppose if it's tradeable it's not so bad. Although it is quite jarring when the game has been built entirely around the energy economy for so long and now we've got content that can't be directly unlocked with this energy.
Some of the fury seems pretty hard to understand, considering prices and content haven't actually be confirmed yet. And I need to find the post that implies that King Tinkinzar is going to part of the paid DLC instead of being free content, considering the number of posts that seem to think that way. That said, if I'm expected to pay for DLC levels, what's wrong with boss content? Value for money and what not, right? Even if there's boss exclusive weapons and what not, I expect that everyone will be able to get them off AH in the end.
Honestly, the only content that shouldn't be DLC's the core. Anything else is fair game. Though it might be fun if we had some DLC levels on the surface instead of digging down.
Usually don't post here, but whatever.
I think there's a lot in the dark still, as far as prices and exactly what content is going to be released, but of course it won't matter to me since I don't have the option of purchasing anything.
So, I am a F2P player, so I'm going to have a F2P bias, but I honestly don't like this. I mean, my "motto" since last Summer when I started has pretty much been "As long as my Mist Tank regenerates, I can get anything a P2Per can", albeit much later than P2Pers. I sort of believed that was the foundation of this game; as it is in many others. Pay to advance much faster, or play for free at your own hindrance.
Creating a side-DLC that is purely P2P as in not even purchasable with CE, can take away from many things.
First of all, it's going to tick a lot of people off. I think you know that one. Secondly, it will take away from the development of the "Non-elite" (AKA Available to all, like SLs) updates, which isn't a good thing in my opinion. I mean, the last Non-Elite update was in Oct. until Missions came out, and even a F2Per like myself got a little bored playing LD and grinding RJP (Crown runs) all day. Surely with DLC content being made, it will take even longer.
I understand that this is all experimental, but it seems to contradict the concrete base of the game.
But all in all, it really depends on exactly what is going to be released. If the end-game is P2P, then all goes down the drain, but I think anyone understands that. If bosses are released to DLC-only, then still no F2Per would be able to get their hands on any sort of weapon that you can get via that boss.
Why? Because a P2Per knows an F2Per can't possibly ever get that item, and a few F2Pers are quite wealthy in fact. So the P2Per can easily extort the heck out of the F2Pers...
The only thing I can think of is to make DLCs completely disconnected from the F2P base, but that seems impossible due to Lockdown.
But hey, I'm cool with the Crimson Order levels being P2P-only, if there absolutely must be a P2P-only area. As long as there's no extortion going on, and there's no ridiculous weapons found down there that deals the final blow on making LD Pay-To-Win.
Perhaps once the real information is given out, players' anger will subside, depending on said information. Right now most of the posters are outraged based on their own suspicions. Looks like you'll have to take some heat to make this work, Nick. I wish you luck.
~Sev
WOW LOOK AT ALL THOSE TINFOIL HATS AND ENTITLEMENT COMPLEXES IS IT HALLOWEEN ALREADY?????????
I'm getting the impression here that some of the people accusing Three Rings of being greedy don't have a proper conception of why companies exist in the first place, especially when they say things like:
"something that should be free."
Really? Really?
I think Severage summarized pretty much everything I'd have to say about this after mulling it over a bit more. I'm still hoping that OOO at least gives people the option to purchase it in game as well, even if it does come at a later date for F2P knights. Another thing I'm hopeful for is that they'll pull another 'business experiment' the same way they did Explorer Packs and make them incredibly easy to obtain and packed with other goodies to make up for the lack of enthusiasm of what looks to be a good portion of the thread.
I suppose the only thing I'm irritated with is that OOO essentially markets Spiral Knights on a F2P platform, and now they're suddenly changing that. Yes, business is business, but even then it just doesn't seem right with the way it's currently being described.
Every new thing 000 has implemented has been a money making scheme this one just more direct.
-accessories (not to mention holding back items that people thought they could get when they arrived).
-featured ah
-shadows lair
-re-returns of items they said that were long gone.
Honestly nick you type your fancy messages and lie to most of the general public within it but some of aren't so blind.
@ Thimol: Plenty of people in this thread have said they're willing to pay with CE. That is still making them money. Having to pay with cash just hurts the community.
Plenty of people in this thread have said they're willing to pay with CE. That is still making them money. Having to pay with cash just hurts the community.
Well, that I know, but I was talking about the people who are saying that it should be free.
I'd be happy to pay a reasonable one-time CE fee for each of the expansion mission packs.
Most of what I want to say has been said, but like Nicoya, I'd be more than willing to pay with CE (all CE comes from someone's wallet anyways, so what's the difference?). Shutting out the F2P crowd isn't a good direction for SK to take, especially for people who don't use Steam.
you know what...
if a P2P system of missions makes for more content quicker, than I might be up for it. I've been playing since April, and the content update have been sparse, and pretty crushable by people who'd been kicking Vanaduke around before Snarbolax existed. (that's not me...) As far as I'm concerned, this game is still in beta. Aggressive design and content creation makes for a more stable old player base, as we like to stick around and see what's coming. If buying mission packs makes the build team start sticking together more actual content (not random clockworks), then why not? I dropped plenty of cash on a game for my phone last year; might as well pay for a game I like more.
