for all the people who are F2p (like me) and those hate who expansion pack missons costing money and not being tradable with out steam
Expansion Mission packs unlockable with CE?
Although im a bit upset with this decision, we can live with it. I have paid out my rear end to get the gear and accessories I have now and have never regretted it. I think we should be happy and give our support since everyone has begged and pleaded for new content.
O WOW LOOK THERE ARE MISSIONS. Now that the content is there they (OOO) can expand upon it, whether you pay for it or not. I may not know too much about their intentions, but I do know that...
I'M GETTIN THAT SWIRLY BOMB THINGAMAJIG!!!!!
I'm... disappointed.
The purchase via credit only was bit of a letdown, and not only that, if the mission is only three or four depths long, and not very difficult then we have a problem.
On top of that, the weapons being untradeable could prove bothersome. I don't want to carry around a one-star weapon forever, especially if I have its upgrades. At least have them bind on acquisition or something.
Also, if indeed the weapons are overpowered, then we're creating a huge disparity between the haves and have-nots, not just in terms of having shiny stuff, but someone who's willing to shell out some money could easily outclass someone who isn't so willing to part with his money and is a legitimately skilled player.
Some changes to this system are in order, mayhap.
I (rant)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is not optional content.
Whether or not the weapons are OP, I think they'll be quite difficult to begin with. In tier 1 alone I was one-shot down to half a health by the boss and I was in 5-star gear. The path to the boss is pretty darn long as well.
Thing is, this is a part of what the overwhelming majority of the playerbase wanted, and it seems to me that (if it is indeed exactly how you described it) it's essentially a shadow lair with a door that only opens with the swipe of a card.
There was an oversight here on Three Rings' part.
er probably should start my own thread for this at this point since admin replies had stopped but even though I'm free to play, I'd like to throw in a suggestion for them to sell this DLC on amazon direct download. Sega sells some of their games there so this wouldn't be a foreign practice. Sometimes they are steam keys.
If you guys sold in game keys for unlocking through there, that'd be cool. I know I'm a minority but I can get some Amazon gift money to buy it there. I can't do that with steam.
P.S. I don't really approve of this since a lot of bombers wanted a shadow bomb for so long and this is a bit of a game changer unlike the previous things like shadow lair items (everything except snarbolax stuff there). But I'm trying to make a way to let you have "money" that won't cost me anything except time. Hey, $5 more might pay for 10 minutes of Eurydice reading these forums, that's a plus right?
K guy, go watch Echoez's youtube vid on the first part of the expansion mission
look at the dmg that a pure elemental weapon is doing on gremlins that are resistant to elemental damage.
390 dmg per hit
PER HIT
holy [crap].......i cant wait to see this thing 1 hit zombies in FSC.......
OP weapons that i cannot purchase! I am a bit POed.
It truly pains me to see this new p2p content push away great players like nicoya kitty. But even more so, it hurts to see a true magical aspect of spiral knights being taken away. Before this patch, nearly EVERYTHING in SK was some how attainable using f2p methods. Now with this new patch, that 100% free to play tag is gone. It was how SK really stood out from all the other generic mmorpgs. Along with with its unique artworks, gameplay and alot more. I think the 100% f2p tag actually encouraged the growth of p2p players, because they had a choice of whether or not to purchase ce. They purchased ce with real money because they WANTED to, not because they were forced to. Now with this new patch and its OP weapons...... 'sigh'
bye bye nicoya, you will be greatly missed
i can foresee...
a game with REAL monsters and challenges. these little f2p monsters should be, and should have been, merely training wheels for a real adventure. 5* ....pffff....lets see some battles which require the equivalent of 20*. hopefully the future includes very difficult dungeons and lockdown which ALL Knights can play in, f2p and p2p....but favors a party which has some p2p real equipment in it to survive. THAT would be a start of a real game.
i wanna fight Dragons after crossing lakes of fire, Medusas that turn party members to stone, Titans in colliseums, and unforgiving merciless Ghouls....not just rabid hamsters, haywire toasters and jelly on the way to a downtrodden old ruler. and if the battles and foes are Epic-enough..i may just find the $$$ for it. adventure on, let's see where it takes us and i hope i am correct in the magnitude and difficulty of what may be to come in this game.
A person who wants to widen the gap between p2p and f2ps? i hope that was sarcasm.
On one hand, there's already CE circulating within the game - thus, restricting Expansion Missions to direct purchase (or gifting) helps stimulate revenue, at least in the short term.
On the other, aforementioned restrictions alienate the F2P-centric portion of the playerbase and set precedent for future updates.
One could argue that direct purchase is not mandated, by referencing gifting/Steam trades/etc. However, said methods are neither universally available nor completely reliable.
Up till now, an integrated game system (the CE exchange) reliably enabled any player to access all content without spending real life funds (given some patience). No such option exists for Expansion Missions.
Ergo, problem.
I just... caught up to this news now.

I guess saying something like "trust" was broken is ridiculous because I don't think OOO ever promised to KEEP this game as a F2P forever to begin with.
Except that SK's status of being a F2P is what bought me here to begin with and *indignant sputtering*
I'm just scared that all the decent people as well as a large majority of the playerbase is going to leave, leaving me alone with credit-card warriors who are utter numskulls yet outclass me at everything in this game even when they cannot grasp concepts like grammar and "SLIMES ARE RESISTANT TO PIERCING STOP HITTING IT WITH A FLOURISH ARE YOU STUPID". All while I still haven't gotten my five-star stuff and still haven't reached Vanaduke.
I guess if I want to see the future I have to imagine a boot stamping down on an F2Per's face, forever.
/cry
I was thinking of buying the expansion pack, but so many F2P players are upset about it. They almost can't get these weapons unless they pay. And now, this game isn't as 100% F2P. It used to be, and that was my favorite thing about it.
/cry
But now, I feel as if all the new story about the crimson order is only going to be for P2P. That almost feels as if F2Pers are being left in the cold.
/emote regains stature.
But I feel that, to keep this game feeling crisp, making it stand out as a unique and different game among many other MMOs, and keeping it as my(and probably over 50% of the player base) favorite online game, all major story related parts of the game should be left purchasable. I really don't want another game to go to ruins.
OK, maybe not quite ruins, but I think the game's rating will go down if OOO keeps doing this.
At least step back and see that expansion missions aren't necessarily the future of the game. They're optional (sure they're "too good"), but still not the main game... at least in my eyes.
If there's official word that the Arcade will never be updated with new F2P content from this point forward, then I'm with you guys.
I hope OOO/Sega realizes that having P2P-only content like this is not the way to go with the reaction here, - for their sake - and adds a CE purchase option ASAP.
Nothin stopped them from adding Sonic costiumes as CE Purchase, as well as available with purchase.
THEY JUST IGNORE US. Dont care, ignored pages of suggestions and explanation. And most They completly sold their souls to STEAM allowing only steam F2P players to get a chance to trade for those missions.
Also with those new weapons LD has become P2P only playground.
Well, to chime in, this is what I have to say on the issue. Did OOO promise to never have things that only cost money? No. But it seemed implied, also
@Asukalanforum
They definitely shouldn't offer CE Purchase for accessories and promtions because the current situation allows players who buy it twice or something to sell them at a reasonably high profit which incentevizes people to buy more of them.
As for these missions... I don't know what to say. I want to say that they should be "sellable" (as in you get a consumable to use and sell for access). Anyway, I'm not sure P2P only content is a good idea but whatever I guess, they can do it but I feel like that's going to cause a significant decline in F2P players.
PS. Also, I'm also worried with how easy it is to get these weapons and they're reported OPness.
Wait wat.
"almost can't get the expansion unless they pay."
"unless they pay."
Seriously wat.
You can still get it. And no matter what, you're paying, either directly, or indirectly. Ever spent CE to make a 5* weapon? You're paying. CE does = money folks. You might have earned it, but it still came from someone's wallet.
Heck, the stuff can even be used on Steam to trade for games.
Seriously, what is this madness. Who released Billy?
(If you've watched that, give yourself a cookie.)
this expansion mission requires a direct purchase with real money rather than payment via energy, just like a elevator pass
i'm sure this is said allready but,
why not ask somebody to buy you the DLC? (ok still a problem for non steam players for now but nick said they where working on making it so in the future you can gift it to client users)
i'm tinking of putting some money on my steam wallet :D (if i do will open a topic in the bazaar for the extra copy's)
About Expansion missions unlockable with CE
Did you noticed how sumilar expansion missions are to Shadow Lairs? You start at elevator, your party is restricted to those who didnt unlocked expansion, floor numbers are ???. Expansion missions are very similar to shadow laris but to play shadow lairs we need to buy key from vendor with CE to unlock them while to unlock expnsion missions we need to do $$ purchase.
The easiest way to make Expansion Missions unlockable with CE is to use Shadow lair system. Make Vatel or other NPC sell an ITEM bound on purchase for certain amount of CE that used unlocks you acces to Expansion Missions. How make it unlock expansion? Same as Shadow Key unlocks shadow lairs. You can ride down to lobby but without that item elecator dont work.
u can just use ce AWESOME i don`t hve 2 pay
basically, a shadow key that never breaks to play the dlc?
Now that's totally possible, but they won't do it because they want prestige within Steam.
OOO needs money to keep spiral knights running, and this is just one way to do just that. I will gladly accept the expansion pack for it's a lot of fun, a good source of Crowns, and it's not that expensive. I fully support this (Just as long as there is still plenty of F2P content)
So basically, P2P content is fine, as long as it doesn't take over the game.
This is the first time I've addressed you directly, but I've been around haven a few times and given the issue at hand I think it's about time. In regards to the mission system and the DLC I'm glad to see the game advancing with new content as its been relatively stagnant for some time. When it comes down to it though I'm not in support of the current rewards for the DLC mission.
I understand you need to make the expansions desirable in order to entice buyers but I feel the items provided detriment rather than enhance the current game model. The movement mechanics of the new sword are interesting and I applaud that, the bomb fills a role which was absent previously, and the mask gives gunners a defensive buff that many gunners claim they needed. That being said their addition, especially in this fashion serves to fuel another issue that already runs rampant throughout the current build. That issue is balancing, and I use that word in two different contexts.
The first refers to gear being balanced across the spectrum in regards to one another (which has been becoming worse and worse with each update - just look at normal attack / defense and you'll see what I mean), and the second refers to balance between F2P and P2P players. This is a F2P game after all. A system which weights P2P players heavily over F2P players doesn't encourage new players to start and continue playing. This game has a high player turn over rate so you can't afford to turn away new players. They're your source of income. In order to keep things fair you could separate the F2P and P2P players to avoid unfair competition but this would divide the SK community. A move like that could be fatal. In light of this I feel expansion mission rewards should be kept to costumes and other such items which do not effect game play or at the very least should present items that are on par with F2P items elsewhere in game (As others have stated above I feel the new items are over powered).
That being said I thought the elevator pass was an ingenious little piece of marketing. In fact I was considering buying one, or several even until this whole expansion thing started. Now don't get me wrong I'm not one of the rage quitters, and I may still buy one soon. I'd just like to see where this trend is heading first. In general I'd like to see a few things balanced out throughout the game (Maybe come out with a pure normal monster set to fix the normal balance issue), and I'd like to see expansion missions offered as interesting content as an addition to the base game - something added in parallel rather than concatenated on the end that offers rewards that don't upset the balance of the main arc. That's just good business practice if you'd like to keep the SK community afloat.

So, after you guys had more than a year to look into it, could you think of any way to allow everyone access to that particular content and further updates that might use a similar business model (thinking about the Battle Sprites here)? If you have a hard time coming up with a solution (other than ignoring the issue and refusing to give a statement all this time), I'm certain some bright people in the community are brimming with ideas on how to make this happen.
I'm aware this thread hasn't been posted in for quite some time. Still, it drew quite a bit of attention in its time and contains those broken promises, valid criticism and several suggestions that in my opinion are not yet ready to be left to rot.
This is insane.
More people becomes necromancer.
The solution seems simple: Make the expansion purchasable as a gift item that can be activated from the inventory, and make it not bound to the account. That means the expansion must still be purchased to be sold for energy/mats/stuff.
Another solution is to sell the expansion well above the associated cost of the same amount of energy, say 2x or 3x. People wouldn't feel as cornered in, but they would still have an incentive to purchase it with $$$; The only people who would save up the energy would be people who wouldn't ordinarily buy it in the first place.
None of the items from the expansion are truly overpowered, but they do have unique properties which are not found in any other item in SK. The hammer gives you a large swing weapong with knockback, that also gives the ability to dodge, but is pure elemental damage. The bomb can hit multiple times, but accross a fixed path with large blind spots and it only does shadow damage. The mask is nice, being one of the best helmets for ranged users, but people still tend to recommend other weapons for PvP and Vanaduke/prestige runs. Some people aren't even willing to do vanaduke runs with hammer users!
What jack said.
The best weapons in the game are already in the game without the expansion. The Hammer, Bomb are more soo cosmetically appealing than anything else. The main reason i bought the expansion was because i saw a player with it when i first started playing and i HAD to have it. Its also note worthy that The Bomb DOESNT hit mini slimes. Unsealed, Brandish and Flourish lines still rein supreme as melee weapons in PvP.
The Helmet is great, but that is obtainable without purchase of the expansion. Heck, i only need 1 more fragment (T3) and then i can sell someone it. People also love the fractured masks looks, in addition to using it in T1 PvP. That sells great, use 100 mist (NOT CE) and a handful of crowns, go back and sell it for 20-30k easily. Those saying they think the content purchased was underwhelming, you arent doing it right.
Personally, I think OOO seriously insulted their f2p players by originally claiming to have it CE purchasable and then changing their minds. The fact that it's been a year and there's still no way to trade it besides through steam is utterly ridiculous. These "professionals" apparently can't figure out any competent CS major could in a matter of weeks at most. That and I here rumors of it being possible on an asian server, which I doubt but would be seriously disappointed with should I find screenshot evidence.
The bigger problem to me is that this expansion model was supposed to fuel new content. One year later, besides the winterfest/Kat events, there hasn't been any new content save for danger missions. Which are a pretty sad excuse for new content. Zero new expansions. Way to be like the politicians and fail to deliver OOO
Yes that completely true and moreover we can buy ele-passes, Expansion and as well as Special prize boxes which come time to time on Asian and cost arorund 1300 ce each and thats not it , there are like 8-9 events every month, the most recent was GH decorating Contest and GM in LD
I agree with the statemets stated by Smashcraft and Ravenevan.
Both have a fairly good point.
On one hand, with the cash-only Expansion Pack, SK lost its unique "trully F2P" label.
And it's reasonable that players are a bit unhappy with the OP cash-only items, because that is leaning towards the Pay-To-Win direction, which used to be a no-go for OOO.
So the Crimson Hammer expansion should remain a rare exception in otherwise completely free-to-play game.
On the other hand, as long as the Crimson Hammer expansion remains the only thing available only with cash, that's fine by me. Everyone can achieve the same goal in the Clockworks, casher or not. And PvP, well, that always tends to be at least a bit unbalanced, IMHO.
"Unsealed, Brandish and Flourish lines still rein supreme as melee weapons in PvP."
It's not like they're not some of the most ubiquitous lines in LD since the release of OCH, but the Hammer is a juggernaut of a contender in those if you have ASI on it - as any 'skilled' hammer player will usually take a poop on other Guardians and Strikers, with a great mobility boost, pure Elemental damage (Vog is less common than Skolver, and probably less than snarbolax as well), and a mechanic that is hard to follow when your attacker uses it properly, I find hammers are more difficult to fight in LD than any good striker with a sealed or flourish.
~Sev
Errrm, the wolver set is the most popular, the snarbolax requires SL completion, and the vog is perfect for the most popularly farmed instanced in the game whose recipe can be obtained from Hall of Heroes, and you think the snarbolax is more popular than the Vog in the game ? ... O.o
You might see more snarbolax in LD due to players wanting more protection from Grand Faust or as a status symbol, but I hardly think it's because they don't have the option of wearing a Vog set. Furthermore, elemental is also the same damage type you are going to be receiving from the most popular shock based weapons you will encounter in LD. I don't think your comment is entirely objective.
Exactly this kind of indifference is why OOO will be able to pull off something like OCH again. To be honest, I expect them to do so somewhere along the Battle Sprite update. They said that Battle Sprites, skills and harnesses would be available to everyone, they never said that all of them will be though. I wouldn't be surprised to see another set of expansion missions that reward those who fork over the money with a special Battle Sprite not available by any other means.

Those are just two of many options OOO could consider when tackling this problem. I've come to understand that the bomb was quite overpowered when it was introduced. I appreciate the efforts made by OOO to reduce that imbalance. As far as I know the hammer is wildly popular in LD. Both weapons have unique properties and for that reason alone should be available to everyone, no matter if those properties are beneficial or not. I don't have that much of a problem with the masks which can be crafted and traded like most other items. Making OCH available to everyone might even anger those people making a living by selling those masks.[...] Some people aren't even willing to do vanaduke runs with hammer users!
I have mixed feelings about that. I assume people do that for a variety of reasons, be they out of ideology, solidarity, frustration or plain envy. Those people basically exclude others like OOO excludes those not willing or capable to climb their paywall. It remains to be seen if that course of action has any positive influence on our cause or just pisses people off.

Those items are certainly a kind of status symbol. I wouldn't go so far as calling them mostly cosmetic, at least not to the extent of costumes or the rewards during the Homecoming Celebration (and even those made people rage for not having access to all of them.) Those are two fully functional additions to the game that are not available to everyone, even if they might have shortcomings. The 5* hammer purportedly sports one of the highest DPS values in the game, is the only slow sword with a three-part combo and has unique movement mechanics not found in any other weapon.

As I said earlier, if the community's outcry against business decisions like this is not loud enough, nothing will keep OOO/Sega from doing it again. The lack of interest in this particular topic is almost as disheartening as the lack of response and intervention on the part of OOO. I'd really like to see OOO actively denying any further paywalls but I don't expect that any time soon. And even if they did, we know what their promises are worth by now.
The hammer is stupidly overpowered. The dash multihits, turning every combo into a Brandish charge.
What the heck. Looks like OOO is getting greedy because of "Business".
Ok, I will be inclined to agree that the hammer is slightly overpowered.
What the heck. Looks like OOO is getting greedy because of "Business".
Yeah... a business doing stuff to make money.... so stupid of them >.>
I think the wide variety of F2P multiplayer games have shown that you can't discard things like this simply because it's a business. What they offer is a premium service to anyone who pays, a luxury good if you will, that exists within that game. The value of the luxury good is intrinsically dependent on the community of the game. If you polarize it by suddenly making some goods overpowered, you create a "game" society where inequality reigns.
It will create short term profit, but in the long term, less people will be interested in investing into the game because they will not see its society as "equal". Gabe Newell understood this, which is why they continued to focus on making luxury goods available in TF2 without sacrificing the competitive value a new player would have over one with the means to afford their content.
To put it bluntly, it all depends on what the developer wants their F2P to be: a slum where they are the drug dealer, a la War Z, or a functional metropolis that profits from its prosperity, a la TF2. A player might join a F2P and be unable to pay for the content, but that doesn't mean that they won't always be able to.
guys, go watch the Demonstration video. I say they are extremely OP
The hammer can kill groups of things without much effort
The bomb
The bomb is the freakin OP one.....
Explosion? ok. Radius? ok WTH IS UP WITH THE MULTIPLE SWIRLING ORBS THAT DO DMG AND STAY THERE FOR LIKE 10 SECS??????????
you can literally spam this bomb anywhere and stay inside it and the orbs will protect you from any melee attacks. Mecha Knight mob in arenas? pfff. Jellies? PFFFFF. Anything thats not resistant to shadow and doesnt have a ranged attack? P.F.F.F.F
man......they took OP to a new lvl :)
