it was frankly something we should have gotten months ago, not a full year after the re-branding. As someone who bailed on SK a while ago, this isn't near enough to motivate me to come back and spend more money, and I'm not convinced anything else that comes will accomplish that either. But maybe I could be proven wrong and there's actually a full new boss level or something coming out, that like everything else that's come since the re-brand, they haven't attempted to tease or build up to at all.
The Sleep update was good but
A simple, thrown-together level set that's more walking than fighting and a retooled status that probably took like fifteen minutes to code is disproportionate, but you don't even have to argue time/effort to find reasons to be suspicious; their choice in development time when the game continues to suffer from poor monetization and long-standing performance issues that cause modern rigs to stumble and freeze is questionable enough. How hard is it to admit that they are wrong about things, to make myriad small QoL changes to the stats of existing equipment, to fix Sprite attacks that are STILL broken after all this time, etc? A small team spread impossibly thin doesn't explain, let alone excuse, this behavior (or lack thereof).
Don't forget to "support the devs" by purchasing energy, valued customer!
Can agree with Draycos, some damage changes (mixer nerf) would be nice, or fixing the fact that its charge still goes through walls, or like you mentioned, those performance issues. I'd imagine changing the damage of a weapon wouldn't be difficult at all, and people who are a fan of that weapon would love the buffs as well. I haven't seen a damage change on a weapon at all, which is weird now that I think about it. Kinda ironic that the sword they released with the update is garbage tier.
GH's company anthem:
The unenlightened gamers,
You cannot make the judgement call,
Give up your free will forever,
Your voices won't be heard at all.
Display your paypal,
While never begging for updates,
And blindly swear your fanbase,
Let your MMO control your mind,
LET YOUR MMO CONTROL YOUR SOUL!
Play in ignorance,
And purchase your RNG boxes,
When the cash and money is the real cause,
Thinking ceases and the truth is lost!
Don't you worry,
Dreams and nightmares will be exactly what you grind,
We give our players the promos they need,
The silence shall succeed.
The fires of greed will burn the F2P,
So we will make mist tanks obsolete!
Breaking down the fabrics of reality!
Let UI update control what you see!
Let your MMO control your soul,
Let your MMO control your mind.
LET YOUR MMO CONTROL YOUR SOUL,
LET YOUR MMO CONTROL YOUR MIND!!!
I am very pissed off at reading this.
You guys don't give it a rest do you?
Its barely ONE month since our last update.
...sigh...
@Azure
Hey, if the lockdown elitists can get what they want by yelling at AT nonstop for 3 years, then maybe they are up to something.
As my mum used say, if you want something, yell for it.
Grey Havens saves game from being shut down, people are angry.
Grey Havens update the game several times, people are angry.
Grey Havens introduce sleep levels, sleep gear, and redo the status, people are angry.
"Game company releases free content, internet users furious"
@Fangel
Free Content? You do realize that you paid for content that were more or less already there (sleep, you can't introduce something you already introduced), some reskinned armors and status that can be redone in like a few minutes. A few hours tops.
If anyone should be angry, it is you. You are donating to a game company that has proved time after time that it could care less what you think of them (or too afraid), your goodwill is going to the proverbial sink, and what angers me the most, is that you are fine with it, even went as far as defending them for their silence and shady actions. That angers me more than GH and OOO combined.
Please don't brush it off with the entitlement fallacy. I know you're better than this.
There is a pile of garbage on the countertop that has been left to rot for years. Doing the dishes is well and dandy, but why ignore the literal garbage?
Let's push entitlement aside, let's agree that GH doesn't owe us anything, and we don't owe them anything, either, and look at Fangel's argument objectively.
I go to this restaurant, and I decide I really like it, the food is delicious and it has the most original atmosphere I've seen in years. They run things pretty well, there's a new menu item every couple of months, whenever something breaks, they usually fix it right away. But then they start cooking all the food a little differently and I guess I can live with that, but it's never really the same or as good as it once was. I keep eating there as usual but only because they put up a sign outside that they're remodeling soon and adding a bunch of new menu items and something I honestly don't care about that much.
About two years pass and I start asking about when that remodeling is supposed to happen, the staff always ignores me or doesn't seem to hear. Finally there's something new on the menu but turns out it's just an appetizer. Meanwhile, most of the old regulars at the place stop coming and everything just starts falling apart, the floor is always wet so the waiters are slipping dropping my orders so I have to wait twice as long to eat, there's a hole in the wall, it's just a mess. The parent company decides to ditch the place because it's not making them anymore money, so the manager's son buys up the place, but then all he does is add even more appetizers. By this point I'm just sick of eating there, even my favorite stuff on the menu is pretty stale by now so there's no point to it anymore.
I leave a bad but fair review on Yelp and the next day, someone leaves a comment and says I have no right to complain because the food isn't very expensive...? Wait, that didn't happen, because that only happens in the entertainment world! Only a crazy person would tell me I have some kind of obligation to not dislike that restaurant just because it's cheap.
You are completely correct.. which is why I called it out as a fallacy instead of replying- the argument that we should be grateful hinges around a misjudged sense of entitlement or how grateful we SHOULD be. Hence "entitlement fallacy" :p
I certainly don't want to support the game in its current state. It's not the SK I knew and loved, and it doesn't look like it ever will be with how GH has "handled" things, if I can even credit that much.
Grow up people. If you like the game, play it. If not, deal with it.
I like the game, and I like GH. I spent money because of this alone. I won't act as pretentious as some of you and assume I know what the dev team does IRL. Maybe they all have a family and kids and a full time job, and are doing this as a hobby. If you don't know #&$@, don't say #&$@.
With the way you people act, I would ignore you too if I was a dev.
Right but no one was talking about the developers' personal lives until you just brought it up. They're strangers to me, I don't care about their families.
"With the way you people act, I would ignore you too if I was a dev."
So basically you're criticizing not what we're saying but how we're saying it? Then if you were a dev, you'd be broke. Facts don't care about your feelings.
I have to ask, if the developers came out and confirmed that they were all bachelors and that working at Grey Havens was their full-time job, would you still be against people criticizing them?
I don't play the game, actually.. Maybe once a month I'll log in to play with old friends, but nobody could call that "active".
I don't know anything about their personal lives, and that's exogenous from the points I'm arguing. I have already said you don't need to point at the crazy amount of time elapsed for little return when you can just attack their bizarre priorities instead.
It doesn't matter if my attitude is off-putting when they clearly ignore everybody anyway (beyond token appeasement). The years of being out of tune with the playerbase regardless of who owns the game speak for themselves.
This thread is so beautiful that I don't know whether to write a serious comment for Fangel to "ehh" or leave it alone so as to avoid getting triggered by lethal bunduru (who has himself written some form of mock profanity) and then banned forever. So I'll do a straw poll- Should I construct a well thought out argument to submit to garbage fest 2017?
With the way you people act, I would ignore you too if I was a dev.
If you don't know #&$@, don't say #&$@.
Probably should take your own advice there, Bunduru.
Isn't Grey Havens working on some other games? I don't remember. Either way, at the moment I'd rather see some more balancing changes than brand new content. It would be very nice if Grey Havens would share at least some of their current plans for SK, too.
(Also, I encountered an error with your poll Fehzor. It assumes that I am not nice. Please help.)
I've been here on these forums for a good 6 years at this point, have experience working on projects of my own, and this topic isn't exactly new to me or the forums in general. The truth of the matter is that-
The sleep update was fine. It likely represented about a month or so of preparation, most of which would have gone into the artwork, modernizing the levels, and of course fixing the status and attempting to balance the new weapons which are in turn balanced well into the system they were balanced around, even if that system isn't balanced itself. It's also important to keep in mind that auxiliary features like guild hall statues do take work fixing up. This work on the game should be celebrated, especially financially as that encourages more work to be done.
The problem arises from the fact that Grey Havens asks us for money. A good way to view the prize boxes that many follow is as the high school band selling chocolate bars for 5 bucks a pop. 100% not worth it, but it's going to a good cause, in our case Grey Havens and what we presume to be more content. It's not that hard to open up Spiral Spy and change around a few colours and then call it a day, but it is real work to give 50 dollars to Grey Havens, and that work is rewarded with the chocolate bar of pearl armor- a lovely and highly collectible symbol that you cared deeply for the game.
The problem then, is the expectation of new content in a timely manner. When players give money to Grey Havens- much more money than any game ought to be worth- they come to want more content updates. When this does not happen many players come to feel anger towards the developers, and in the case of this thread, lash out at them. Content in the free game is not free at all, but rather very, very costly- people were waiting months to get the stars to align and produce something playable, and they did, and they were happy, but it doesn't meet expectations because the game has grown large and updating it isn't likely an easy or fun task. The expectation is 1 dollar in; 1 dollar of content out. The reality is 50 dollars in from 30 players (compared to 15 from thousands, or 5 from a million) and a less than optimal ratio out on that investment. This is no one's fault.
People are right to feel frustrated. The dev(s) are right to feel frustrated. There's nothing wrong with these negative emotions.
Well, Jesse, you should be glad we got anything at all. I don't think you understand just how tiny the dev team is. They don't even have Ian or Nick, who were two big players in the game's creation.
Bunduru, I didn't even read what you had to say because it was that good old playground "DON'T LIKE IT DON'T PLAY IT HEUEGEUHH"
Draycos, I'd certainly love a mixmaster nerf for the simple reason of it being pay only, though having a craftable gun that works the same as a Mixmaster would be the ultimate solution.
Fehzor, you've detailed this situation exactly right.
Midnight, your cute little poem made me cringe so hard I nearly tore my cornea back open and broke all my teeth.
@Doomiax
You do realize that the poem is just the modified lyrics of this song? Right?
@Fehzor
I guess to add to that, GH showed little in the way of promise. Hope can carry you on for a while, but only a while, this is one of the reason why I oppose Fangel's optimism so much. I mean, both he and Bopp are running out of good things to say about this game, seriously.
Keeping the game alive is par for the course, the fact that Fangel can make a mountain out of this tiny anthill is baffling to me. I mean, yeah, keeping SK alive is good and I can play some solo arcade once in a while. But that is not enough to say the game is 'going strong' and we are all too whiny for our own good.
GH has literally learned NOTHING from their mistakes. What do GH do when they failed to deliver with the gunner update? Never promise anything again, we got no early notice for any updates nowadays, not even timed event so we can prepare IRL. Weapons are unbalanced? We failed to balance and nerfed/buffed some weapons too hard (RSS/Acheron)? Oh well, we will never touch the balance ever again, even if they are still obviously under/over powered (CIV/Chaos). Receiving a lot of community backlash? Oh well, excommunicate them and never hear from them again!
I think the reason why so many things won't change in SK is that GH simply lost the will/courage/determination/audacity to do so. I mean, how else can one explain their inactions if fixing this game is as easy as Draycos described?
*puts on tinfoil hat*
...I oppose Fangel's optimism so much. I mean, both he and Bopp are running out of good things to say about this game, seriously.
You continue to mis-characterize my position. My comments have been quite consistent for several years now. I try to be realistic. Anyone who expects lots of big content updates from Three Rings or Grey Havens is unrealistic.
Or you can think of it this way: if it wasn't for Grey Havens, there wouldn't be a Spiral Knights to complain about.
@Doomiax
Again, I have no obligation to enjoy the content. If the game isn't fun to me, I won't play it, and a handful of new Arcade levels that I now have to slug through garbage like Dark City just to reach, isn't fun to me.
@Fehzor
The best solution then is not to throw their hands up in the air and give up. It's for Grey Havens to seriously rethink their game and financial model, because it's just not working. I know, it's a terrifying risk for a small company like GH to take on a seven-year-old game whose playerbase is dwindling already, but even if there's a big chance it ends in failure and the game closing in a few months, the alternative is guaranteed closure after maybe a couple more years of the game limping in place and becoming more of a ghost than ever before.
Realistically, they'll probably just go with that second option but, I never would have expected the Cautery Sword being upgraded or Sleep coming back, so, there's an extra drop of pointless optimism I guess.
I try to be realistic. Anyone who expects lots of big content updates from Three Rings or Grey Havens is unrealistic.
So far, your 'realistic' expectation seems to be, stick around and see what happens. If that is really your point, then can you hypothesis a reason why GH hasn't moved forward with some obvious changes they can make to the game that won't even take them that much effort?
How to be realistic about a game:
1) ask yourself "do i enjoy playing this game"
2) if yes, continue playing game. If no, cease to play the game actively
Yes, the formula really is that simple.
Lo and behold some of us enjoy the game for what it is, not for what it isn't. I enjoy the game for what it is and when I don't feel like playing it, I don't play it. I respect that some people may not like it, and that's for them to decide. Yet I don't come bounding onto forums to openly complain without offering a solution because it's not helpful for anyone to endlessly complain about something.
In the words of one of the Grey Havens staff members:
"There's a big list and these LWJGL issues are a lot further down it. There are also some issues you don't know about."
We're a small crew and trying to balance a variety of priorities. We appreciate your notes, but slow progress doesn't mean no progress."
Not every update will be "your" update. If you enjoy the game for what it is now, that's great. If not we'd love to hear your solutions rather than hearing you talk about how you want the game to die. That's a realistic expectation.
Also inb4 this thread gets locked like that last time people started spreading rumors.
So far, your 'realistic' expectation seems to be, stick around and see what happens. If that is really your point, then can you hypothesis a reason why GH hasn't moved forward with some obvious changes they can make to the game that won't even take them that much effort?
I don't think about it much. I just play the game when I want to, and I don't play the game when I don't want to. Anyway, I don't agonize over it.
But, to answer your question: Polished software always takes more work than one expects. The changes you're describing take a moderate effort rather than little effort. And Grey Havens' work schedule is so scanty that a "moderate" effort takes months. I wish things were different, but apparently they're not.
How to be realistic about a game:
1) ask yourself "do i enjoy playing this game"
2) if yes, continue playing game. If no, cease to play the game actively
Sort of stating the obvious there... we are all doing that, we just decided to use some our free time to come here to express our discontent.
Yet I don't come bounding onto forums to openly complain without offering a solution because it's not helpful for anyone to endlessly complain about something.
Well, then explain AT. PvPers got what they wanted by yelling about it non stop for three years. So I think it is only natural we emulate them, I mean, after all, if GH doesn't want to communicate with us. What else can we do? Walk away as the game dies out? Or shout in their ears and make sure our message gets across?
We are not agonizing over this, but we need to do something to make the devs know what we want. And since there is no communication, no vote or consensus. What else can we do other than complain about it? Sure, we can just walk away, many players have already done that, and some of them are never coming back.
There is a significant difference between voicing your opinion about the direction of the game on a public forum and bashing the developers, support team, and community of a game for not meeting your own personal needs.
People in the PvP sphere didn't ask for Hardcore Mode. Even before Hardcore Mode, the community had moved past Auto Target and realized that UVs, trinkets, and ping had a much higher influence than Auto Target ever did. Hardcore Mode just showed up and proved the current thought process true, and it did it in such a way (hazards, new LD maps) that makes it more interesting anyways.
Here's my own personal take on Grey Havens, Spiral Knights, and previously, Three Rings: I will appreciate them for the things they do right, and give constructive criticisms for what I believe they have done wrong. For example, Equinox and Solstice Prize Boxes have not survived the transfer over to standalone prize boxes very well. As such, for those boxes only, the previous system should be brought back. Instead of complaining about mixmaster, I did some tests and offered several solutions to balance. Instead of complaining about kat raiments, I started a community discussion about how to make the event more fun, and I bring this thread up every time the black kat event returns.
From the occasional casual interaction I'll have with game masters, they are more than aware of what we are saying - it's part of their job.
Much like the law in today's day in age with technology all around us, sometimes they move forward slowly. Not because they don't know, but because every step forwards requires foresight and testing, even the smallest thing.
So make your voice heard. Get into discussions. Explain why you don't like the game, where it is going, etc. Let's talk about the game - not the developers and speed of development, not the communication between support and the community, and not individual qualities of players. The latter separates us, talking about the game brings us together.
@Jessecho and anyone else looking for a solution.
I think the solution would be to for serious amounts of work to be put into the game, not in the way of an update, but in the way of refactoring things that didn't work, and in the way of streamlining things that do work well. This is what would open up the game for many of the things players have suggested, and for the updates we'd like to see to come out in a timely manner.
The players would hate this. They'd come on and see "small changes" or "behind the scenes work" like, EVERY update, or worse- nothing. No patch notes, no communication. It's like when you go to the doctor and they try to tell you about your illness and have to put it into laymans terms for you, no one cares how the bridge is built, or how their arteries are connected just that the bridge doesn't collapse and that their arteries don't get clogged. Worse, this kind of work is painful from a development standpoint.
The solution to this newer problem would be to hire a level designer of some sort and simply add small features like danger rooms, new arcade parts, new set-in-stone levels, things that don't need a ton of work and that don't disrupt the format of the game. This, along with prize boxes, would keep the game making money and the players happy.
Now, Mr. Fangel's grand theory semi-confirmed by his friend Mr. Cronus if I do recall correctly is that Spiral Knights needs more players before they'll start hiring and really going. This is just about the only facet of the issue we can make a mark on.
-Get your friends to play.
-Make a youtube channel.
-Get some "famous" youtubers to popularize the game.
-Buy a blimp with "PLAY SPIRAL KNIGHTS" written on it and fly it around the super bowl.
-Buy a lesser advertisement on mobile or some place where it's not obscenely expensive. Possibly save for this as a community.
-Get Legobuild's event to be centered around expanding the game
The goal of course is to beat out Puzzle Pirates and get the developers to invest in us again after they're done with whatever Puzzle Pirates thing they're working on.
Alternatively, you could attempt to buy new content and fixes off of them-
Step 1- Contact the GMs and see if they can give you an estimate of the amount of money you'd need to raise
Step 1.5- Make sure to ask the GMs for some form of rewards for backers, as GH has literally infinity give aways.
Step 2- Make a kickstarter; if the GMs tell you how much money needed you can make it for that amount.
Step 3- Spread the word in game, and raise that amount of money.
Step 4- Give it to the devs in exchange for what I've outlined above happening for a while.
But the biggest point is that arguing with Mr. Fangel and Mr. Midnight DJ isn't going to solve anything. Regardless of whether Fangel is overly optimistic or Mr. Midnight DJ's expectations are unrealistic, nothing you yell at the other "side" will get through and the debate will resurface in about two weeks, where garbage festival 2017 will resume at full force. You should all be on the same side, the side of Spiral Knights, which should aim to accomplish something.
Thank you for reading and my apologies to the 6ish people that voted against my commenting in this thread.
I believe we dont get any new content because we never agree on anything. This games community is divided into 3 sections. Haters, lovers and neutrals. Haters want the game to die and want GH to plummit to their death as fast as they can. Lovers continue to support the game by defending against untrue rumors and buying things. Neutrals like me dont really care less about what happens. Neutrals would just do something other than SK instead of sit in haven for hours. Now i know not all of you are one of these 3 groups but i see them as the MAIN 3 groups in the community. The biggest problem is though that WE NEVER AGREE ON ANYTHING. All we do is argue about what we want and call each others opinions stupid and invalid. Sometimes we have suggestions with no one saying no and a few people saying yes but that isnt enough. We need someone to come up with a good idea, have a large majority of the community comment with "Yes id like that" instead of just saying it in your head and then send the thread to GH so they can see it faster. If this doesnt happen then dont ever expect anything new because they arent getting guidance. GH wants to know what we want but we can never give them a straight answer.
In conclusion how about we have a thread making ideas for a new update and then eventually have everyone agree on ONE STRING OF NEW CONTENT?
Not a thread complaining about no new content.
That's not true, I'm pretty sure only a small fraction of Lockdown players actually wanted auto-target out, so explain that.
You're even going against your own logic here as well, you say that the community is so strongly divided yet you still think it's possible for us all to completely agree on something? The only way that would ever happen in the real world is if we all compromised on our own interests. When that happens, everyone loses! Instead of having new content that some people love and some dislike, you end up having content that nobody cares about because it was watered down so much to ensure it didn't upset anyone.
And if you really think that us agreeing on something as a collective is all it takes for new content to come, explain why the Forge still exists or why gear is so grossly unbalanced still.
1. Auto target being taken out of lockdown was the devs showing they can do something. No one asked for it yes but they wanted to do a little something showing us that they aren't lazy and they can do stuff.
2. Yes it's possible. Just because we are all divided doesn't mean we can't all agree on at least one thing. If all of you agree i'm a nuisance to this community then hey wouldya look at that! You all agreed on something! Also i never said it had to be to the point where EVERYONE likes it. I said a large majority. And it doesn't always mean everyone loses. Hah. Where did you even get that idea?
3. Take my complaint from half a year ago about the forge and orbs. You'll easily see i had experience on knowing why THAT'S still here. In summary everyone there said it was to slow down the heating progress and that it was fine. Sure it was HALF A YEAR AGO but I've seen the current complaints and people are still saying stuff like that. Some people agree but they aren't saying anything most of the time that I see the threads.
Also don't think I'm TRYING to anger anyone. What i really want is the community here to shut up and agree on something. Sitting here just complaining won't lead to nearly as much as agreeing on something. Not all of you have to agree on something just a large majority. If you want the forge to go away then we need to keep getting them to add stuff in until the stuff we have makes the forge outdated and it's concept unfitting for the game.
Edit: Grossly unbalanced gear is also because no one comes to agreement.
Edit number 2: Heres what im saying. If you like an idea comment and say "Yes i like this" instead of just saying that in your head.
@ Fallen-Feces: Also i never said it had to be to the point where EVERYONE likes it. I said a large majority
@ Fallen-Feces: What i really want is the community here to shut up and agree on something.
lol chill out
The community does agree on things, it's just that nothing ever happens anyways. Let's look at some historical examples:
Many people agreed that the shard bomb shouldn't have been removed/nerf, but it got removed/nerfed anyways. [1] [2] [x]
Many people agree that the Winmilion is underpowered, but it never got buffed anyways. [3] [4]
Bonus: Many people agree that the Winmilion should get a 5 star version, but that never happened anyways. [5] [6]
Many people agree that beasts are too weak, but beasts never got buffed anyways.[7]
Many people agree that Acheron doing heavy sword levels of damage is wrong, but there was nothing done about it anyways. [8] [9]
I'm over SK, but I find it hard to believe that nothing is getting done because the community isn't agreeing hard enough. It just doesn't make much sense.
@ Fallen-Feces: Heres what im saying. If you like an idea comment and say "Yes i like this" instead of just saying that in your head.
"The community does agree on things" I never directly said we dont. Im saying we need a HUGE amount of people to do it to get anything done. I know it isnt gonna do it right away but its a huge step in getting GH to consider things.
Also if you want to do the willy wonka you must be new here joke then get your facts straight because i happen to have been here since 2012 or late 2011.
Im not trying to attack anyone im just saying that if you like an idea then comment instead of saying in your head. Its not gonna get things done instantly but it will REALLY help.
If they wanted to do a little something then they should have fixed Shard Bomb invincibility frames, Winmillion and Sealed Sword charges getting stuck behind walls. In what world would doing something as simple as disabling a gameplay option in the menus show that they're capable developers?
I explained in plain terms why everyone loses when we have to compromise, if you can't understand that then that's not my fault.
The Forge is already completely unfitting for the game, the playerbase has shrunk to almost nothingness and presumably resulted in a nosedive in profits for Three Rings which led to the transfer to GH since the update that added the Forge in 2013. If you can't see that it's not a top-priority problem, I don't know what to tell you.
A "HUGE" amount of people to agree, you realize that there are only maybe a dozen forum regulars left around if I make a generous estimate? We don't have a HUGE amount of people left around to agree because everyone is leaving.
You're not making a bit of sense, where is your evidence that Three Rings or Grey Havens only ever added things that the community unanimously agreed on?
Frankly, it just sounds like you're saying this because it sounds smart.
Welli kinda have to agree with Fangle here. They at least did something and it was pretty interesting. I mean Devs job is not that easy. just look up a video or something to see the steps and things they have to follow beside the low budget.
Well, keep in mind they're doing everything they can to keep the game updated. It's been one year since their move, and they're a small team, you know. Have faith.
