Suddenly, the animator had a fatal heart attack!

((Etern-Term hit the nail on the head right there. I wanted guns to be viable as well as swords when we were going by the old RPG-style fighting system, which we'll probably move back to (for the most part). But I ended up doing that by just matching their damages. And then this came around, and while it was originally more based on FF6's "Battle of Narshe" sequence than the Fire-Emblem-Advance-Wars-with-a-hint-of-Disgaea-I-think-never-actually-played-it-just-heard-my-little-brother-play-number-4-and-SARDINE-POWER-type-thing it is now, I thought: Hey, guns should have long range! Distance weapons! Sniping!

...Yep, that blew up in my face. But hey, KV-103, with his SmallCalibur, has the BEST sword charges! (Except for maybe D-07, but D-07 has so much Reflexes that normal attacks are honestly better in his case. Plus he's easy to hit.

Pholy probably won't be joining the next fight. Neither will IS-22B, D-459A7, or SQD-7MvO. Anyway, start thinking about what you want to craft! The Tome of Hearty Fortune can mark a single enemy for increased heart drops, and that spatula will be buyable, which is all the info you need to start planning your crafting.))

(I love how everyone here address KV-103 as a 'he', despite having the word 'King' in its codename, KV-103 considers itself a genderless servant of the torchbellow.)

The Machinauts are led back to the Refuge elevator by Pholy.

Upon arrival, a large wall, covered in turrets, is still forming out of the Refuge's walls. Mendilex hobbles over to the group. "So how d'ya like it? That is the Autowall- the only thing that kept the Refuge safe after the war. And it still works, but it's a bit rusty. Since you took down the pirates' vanguard, though, we'll have no trouble setting it up."

Mendilex leads the Machinauts, and Pholy, through a series of barrier doors, behind the safety of the Autowall. "Unfortunately, the darn thing has an overheating problem. So we have to retract it periodically to cool it down. The pirates struck at the perfect moment..."

"Darn suspicious." IS-22B shakes his head. "I 'spect those Thaargan have some kinda spy."

"As did I. And we found him- it was a Jellafia racketeer." Mendilex shakes his head. "In disguise as a darn Soda Puppy vending machine. Hard to trust anybody these days..."

"Yeah... the Jellafia WOULD pull that kind of crap." Pholy growled, "When they're not wreckin' each other, they're kissin' up to the Thaargan... someone's gotta take them DOWN!"

"Hmm... yes. We've been considering operations against both Don Electrocuto and Muyōburobu, but we need all our soldiers here to fight invaders... however, we may be able to get some leads from the informant. In the meantime... we've got repairmen on the job, and I'll see to it your maintenance costs are covered. You should get fixed up and craft proper gear before going on any more missions." "URGENT BUSINESS, MY 79TH SPINE!" Electrocuto turns a large series of spines- Electrocuto's "head" toward the Gray Wizard. "When those Super Bots come back- and they WILL- you had BETTER KILL THEM. Or else I'm going to... AAAARGH! I CAN'T ARTICULATE A THREAT! AND IT'S YOUR FAULT!"

The Gray Squishy Wizard sighs. "Relax. We've got a good strategy, and we improved our magic to get Furnishingus Breakyourspinius. And we have that secret spell... so we can't lose."

"Can't lose? You WON'T LOSE. Or I'm going to FLUSH YOU ALL!"

"...Flush?" The Gray Wizard pauses for a moment, before realizing that Don Electrocuto means that literally. "Okay, okay! You made your point! We'll wreck anyone that tries to bother you! Sheesh..."

Muyōburobu's Garage

"Still don't believe you actually got him in here." A Viskouza Oiler and a Viskouza Ice Cube are talking as large machine parts are being moved by a few jury-rigged Gremlin cranes. "How'd you do it?"

"I didn't! He was in here because he got sick of searching for a soda and just went to sleep here. Hasn't moved for two days!"

Muyōburobu, despite having a large, armored tank assembled on the spot around him, isn't moving at all. "Can you make this quick? I'm getting... yaaaaaawn... zzzzzzzz......"

The Oiler sighs. "Just as usual. Can't stay awake when he's getting into his vehicle."

"It's like looking after Cradle's fattest infant."

The tank, however, is being assembled very quickly, with all its weapons being routed to hastily-assembled controls. Muyōburobu mumbles things in his sleep as the tank is being built. "Zzzz... hope the prototype does the job... I don't want to go ride a tank... too much... noise... snoooooore..."

Carrying Lil' Wiz, SEE-4 follows the rest of the group. "Maybe it can controlled?" it mumbles in binary.

On this thought, the robot pulls out a spare hand, and unscrews all but one of the fingers. Holding Lil' Wiz and the hand next to one another, SEE-4 focuses.

The robot jams the hand and the polyp together. Lil' Wiz reacts violently, shocking SEE-4 and launching it back. The little polyp repeatedly retaliates, zapping the robot. "Stay down! Bad!" shouts SEE-4, as it edges closer, fighting back the repeated attacks.

When close enough, SEE-4 finally plucks Lil' Wiz off the ground. "Okay, I'm not going to do that again! Stop!" Lil' Wiz tosses one more ball of magic-stuff in SEE-4's (already burnt) face before calming down.

SEE-4, realizing that its quite behind, tosses Lil' Wiz in its pack before running after the group.

"By the way, King, do you have records of weapons growing unusually energetic?" SEE-4 asks KV-103. (Because KV appears to be the oldest robot in the group.) Holding up the Heightened Plasmator, SEE-4 continues, "Do you know where this energy comes from, and is it safe to use? I have not experienced the phenomenon before I joined this group."

Mendilex points toward the Autowall. "That there was built by Zallinock, a particularly well-known Gremlin engineer who was loyal to no clan, instead owing allegiance only to science, or so he said. It was the last standard commission he took before delving into his research on the quantification of magic. Yep, you heard me."

Mendilex stares at the Autowall. "While that nasty fiendish stuff you'll see all over Dark Cities couldn't be quantified (nor could anyone stomach the stuff), Zallinock was able to convert Owlite magic to its most basic elements, and he showed a science convention that he could control it directly from a computer terminal! No wands required! But then, one day, before he could get a patent on this... Zallinock, and most of his research notes, vanished. No one saw him again!"

Mendilex hits a few buttons on a computer. "His Autowall, however, remains to this day. A part was damaged by Obsidithax's bombs, and the turrets had to be reset and upgraded, but other than that, it retains the form it had when Zallinock put it together."

Mendilex unlocks the crafting district with a keycard built into his cane. "All right, Autowall's up, so the lockdown's done! Shop and craft to your processors' content."

((That's perfect. You can begin crafting immediately; you'll be given 1000 crowns to do so, as well as 1* gear, so you aren't behind the rest. I would strongly recommend looking through the Glossary's Gear section for two trinkets to make.

On a side note, Defending now doubles the HP requirement for the Knight Bracer. For example: Armstrong is at 15% HP, Buzz has a 1* Knight Bracer. If Buzz defends, and Shrapnall tries to shoot Armstrong with a Wand of Fearful Flux, Buzz will take the hit.

1. Are we not allowed to use weapons from the actual game? I've been going through the gear list and noticed several items from the game aren't part of it.

2. The status blast bombs you made confuse me. The stronger variants of Firecracker, Cold Snap, and Static Flash are supposed to be of the same Star rating?

3. Would you mind listing what each type of weapon is so we can know the finishing move before buying and crafting it?

IS-22B nods. "An' that means we can go git 'em."

"With just us?" Pholy shakes his head. "Man, that's still a lot. We can't cream that many of 'em at a time!"

SQD-7MvO says, "Heh! There's way more than us! We got a whole complex full of Machinauts that are being rebuilt as we speak!"

"Right." IS-22B scratches his chin. "IS-139P 'Aliss', correct?"

"Theeeee one and only! Kya ha ha ha!"

"You could take a few Machinauts, an' distract one gang, while a big group runs in an' takes down the other. Then we all converge on the remaining gang," IS-22B says. "But which one would we fight?"

Greave adds, "The captive said a few more things. The Viskouza's leader, Don Electrocuto, has been working with Squishy Wizards. If you attack him, expect to face powerful magic. On the other hand, Muyōburobu is packing more convential firepower. Specifically, a large tank, and some artillery batteries."

"Well, then... which one do we fight?"

The Finals Problem

((The next battle will begin on Wednesday night (this has everything to do with final exams). Judging by the overwhelming majority, it'll be against the Jellafia.

@Colray: After the two gangs are defeated, 2* gear will be available.))

"Jellafia first? Awright." IS-22B shrugs. "I'll go off an' draw up some plans."

"Ooh, plans! Let me see 'em! Kya ha ha!" IS-139P follows behind IS-22B and his squad.

"Ah, yes..." Mendilex nods. "Now, if the scale powder is gone..."

The elevator whirrs up the passage, and Gremlins can be heard chattering aboard. Soon enough, Nalki is running through the Autowall. "Heeeey! Grampa Mendilex! And Alpha Force! I heard you guys fought some pirates!"

Behind her, the four Wildbark Gremlin soldiers, as well as four Graingear soldiers, walk through the Autowall barrier, talking amongst themselves. Nalki points toward them. "Nautilus broke out the other four. You probably heard already, though. IS-139P Aliss ran ahead to see if there were any pirates left to fry- her words, not mine!"

"Nalki? Whew, you're back!" Mendilex turns to face Nalki. "I was getting worried. And... the 2023rd Wildbark Squad, and the... gimme a bit... 5088th Graingear Squad. Hah!"

"Weren't kiddin' when you said you knew everyone here, were ya?" The Wildbark sergeant shakes Mendilex's hand. "How are you holdin' up?"

"Me? ...Mostly the same. Still not getting enough sleep."

"Sorry to hear it."

"So, Mendilex! The Machinauts are working again. You knew that, though."

Mendilex nods. "I figured a bunch of sealed Machinauts walking again would indicate that. Anything else?"

"Well, a lot of them were broken. But I put a few back together, and from there, they started fixing themselves." Nalki's face fell a little. "Some were too broken to even fix. Especially on the top floor. Oh, and we fought an MZK unit!"

Mendilex's eyes widen. "An MZK unit? Nalki, you're lucky to be alive!" Mendilex shakes his head. "They're very dangerous."

"You got that right. He sent minions after us, put creepy pictures on the monitors, and kept chanting 'Buried alive' until he got up to us, and then started trying to kill us with a shovel." Nalki raised her eyebrows. "It wasn't an easy fight!"

"Pardon me, sir..." The Graingear Sergeant asks, "What's an MZK unit?"

"A Machinaut..." Mendilex says, "A Machinaut corrupted by malicious programming from someone called "Zerezzil." His programming, combined with the fiend-element 'Phearium', drives them to murderous insanity. They must not have found all of them..." Mendilex smiles toward the Machinauts. "You have my utmost thanks. From what my granddaughter tells me, you saved her life. So there's another one I owe you."

I was unscathed, and, other than my usual science-based impulses, I had the directive of following a map which was stored in my memory. Following that map lead me to several battles.

Right before it lead me to this group, I was assaulted by an impossible machine, which crippled my equipment. I had to make my own equipment out of the resources available, although my Catalyzer's power source worked in an old Pulsar."

SEE-4 shrugs. (An odd gesture for a robot.) "My history shouldn't be much significance, though. I doubt it leads to any helpful scientific data."

"Anyway... as for your question, Longshot- is that right?"

"Yeeeep!"

"Mmhmm." Mendilex scratched his chin. "Dangerous series other than the MZK line... hmmm. Well, I'm no expert, but anything in that old story about the Fallen King may be dangerous. Some Machinauts may have gone mad from isolation... this happened to UTS units once. Extreme abuse by those in a position of power may trigger hyperdefensive responses that stick around even when the source of the abuse is gone. Sadly, this happened with many unfortunate Machinauts, of many series, though this was usually reversible."

Mendilex sighs. "Then there's the TB-XP50 series. Not hostile, per se, not by default, but they're dangerous because of their recklessness. TB-line Machinauts are meant for extremely high speed, you see, and the XP50 series were packed with fewer inhibitor drives. The lack of inhibitors lead TB-XP50 'nauts to flout all direction and law and ignore the well-being of others, and simply try to reach as high a speed as possible for as long a time as possible. This... led to a lot of terrible accidents. They won't even listen to the law, so if you see any TB-XP50 Machinauts and they're putting anyone in danger, you probably should stop them by force."

"I call it an 'impossible' machine because it makes no sense. It really just looked like a huge pair of gears that just...floated. There was no propulsion, yet they were floating. While its metal exterior felt real enough, my bullets wouldn't even collide with the thing; they'd just keep going and hit something behind it. After it tossed itself at me enough times, it charged at me with such force that I lost power.

"When I rebooted, I found myself with heavy armor and weapon damage, but my structural system was strangely unscathed. This doesn't match with my previous memory, because I had lost a leg in my battle with the machine, and neither of my guns were originally damaged.

"I judge the experience to be somewhat useless, because the data simply don't match up. And I doubt some random being would come along, repair my hull, and then trash my guns. And why was it impervious to my attacks? Why didn't it crush me after I was deactivated? There are too many lose ends."

"Ha, no need to worry about their accuracy." Mendilex chuckled. "They're so obsessed with speed, the only damage they cause is by accident. Heck, you're better off getting them mad at you. Makes them more predictable." Completely serious, Mendilex adds, "I know from experience."

Mendilex turns to face SEE-4. "That sounds impossible, all right. If I didn't know any better, I'd wonder if you had hallucinations! Ha, but you don't seem like the type. Darn good eye on you, gettin' all those shots."

An alarm suddenly blares from the direction of the Autowall... for a few seconds. A moment later, Torchbellow soldiers come running in, escorting well-dressed, previously armed, and very upset slimes at gunpoint. "Sir! The Jellafia and Viskouza tried to mount their attacks at the same time! They started fighting each other before they even noticed the Autowall! It was the most amazing failure I've ever seen!"

"Hah!" Mendilex bonks one of the Jellafia goons on the head. "How dumb do ya get? Heh, this is our chance, isn't it?"

"Yep!" Nalki grins. "Time to prep you guys for an assault!"

Three hours later, the party is ready to launch their assault. IS-22B goes over a map of Depth 2.

"Right. Y'all see this big red region over here? That's Viskouza territory. The red arrow is me, Pholy, IS-139P, D-459A7, and SQD-7MvO. We're gonna make a feint on 'em from the south terminal- 139P came up with the details o' that one." A red arrow, indeed, leads to a red region of the map, then back out.

"Kya ha ha! And belieeeeeve me, they're going to be STEAMED when they see what I prepared for 'em!" IS-139P starts giggling under her breath.

"Soon as they start a-comin' for us, we're gonna skedaddle. Keep their guys chasing us - and thus, in the same area - while y'all deal with the Jellafia."

D-459A7 nods. "Right. And the blue arrow?"

"That's the Torchbellow volunteers." A group of Torchbellow gremlins with Thwack Hammers, Mending Wands, and Gremlin Grenades all stand to salute as IS-22B addresses them. "Naw, no need to salute me! I'm just the tactics guy."

"Sir, you fought to save our home from pirates. You deserve a salute."

"Gosh, when ya put it that way..." IS-22B, looking about as flattered as a Machinaut can, continues. "Right. Y'all are gonna hit an' run. I don't wanna see any of you get yerself killed- just enough to get the attention of their grunts. Have 'em chase you into the sewers..." IS-22B points to a spot on the map... "...right over here. Two ICJB Agents and a Sprite set up traps in there that'll slow 'em down for sure on the way back. They'll help you get outta there yourselves while leaving the Jellafia underlings stuck. Anyway, once that's done..."

IS-22B turns toward the party. "Y'all are gonna run in there when the way's clear. Break through their elite racketeers- they'll be a-hidin' in wait, but you can take 'em, no trouble- an' then run in there, find Electrocuto, an' dish out some frontier justice! Then contact me via radio and we'll move on to the Viskouza."

In accord with IS-22B's plan, the party waits for the Torchbellow force. A large amount of Slimes wait- enough to be considered a small army- but a flurry of Gremlin Grenades sends the vast majority of them running around the ruins of the old city, into a sewer line. Only a token force is left to defend the Don. Now's your chance!
