((Well, darn. Another delay happened.

Assuming you're done with this tomorrow, the next battle will probably be post-Christmas as I'll be spending Christmas/Christmas Eve with family. I can probably allow Crafting during that time; Boost wouldn't forget his favorite customers.

The Wizards teleport out of their fortress as it starts rumbling. You make your exit as the Mobile Castle Cube starts falling apart, melting back into the slime it was composed of. Standing atop the roof of the fortress, you watch it sink to the earth,

The Squishy Wizards had turned the entire slime swamp into a mobile fortress... an interesting use of Owlite magic, to be sure. But now they've lost their bet, and that beacon is yours.

"Good work, team. We'll send a group who knows more about Owlite magic devices to get that thing working toward finding the Antiflame. In the meantime... that chip. Boost is in town- maybe he can appraise it?"

How to tell if a sword lily and a lily are related?

"Mission complete." I said. "I'll think about it. I'm not sure if I'll do any crafting, though."

(Time to begin picking up steam on this character subplot of mine. Hopefully these walls of text will be done and over with in some time. There's only four or so transmissions left.)

And then my interface began flashing.

{Radio signal picked up. Transmitting from Draco Supercluster, distance closing in. Transmission has been recorded, dated May 11, 2054.}

"Well, that's peculiar..." I said. "Last two times, it didn't do this. Now...what were the contents of that transmission?"

{About those co-ordinates I discovered by accident a while ago, I've tracked where they go to and it's...confusing.

How confusing?

It leads to a solar system outside Proxima, but this system isn't located in the Draco Supercluster, nor the nearby galactic cluster of Virgo. And don't get me started on the planet itself...

Why's that?

The parameters of it keep changing rapidly. I looked at it in the observatory and it looks like a giant globe imprinted with the grandfather of all impact craters.

I'm pouring over the photographs and...wait...that's not a crater. The surface seems to be made up of large slabs. That crater is actually the innards of the planet.

I've also analyzed the source of that cluster of radio noise. It was coming from a ship that was orbiting the planet before a surface-to-air attack destroyed it. The transmissions called this planet "Cradle" and it seems that no distress beacon was sent out before it was shot down.

This is highly unusual, Novak. Transmissions also show the presence of a massive cluster of wars, in fact multiple are being fought simultaneously at this time.

Then I'd suggest heading there. We'll be entering another galaxy and the political situation there may be vastly different compared to Proxima, but since we've managed to shut down wars peacefully before, I have a good feeling about this.

Got it. We're setting a course for Cradle. Inform the rest of the crew. Well, the five of us, anyway...}

"Wait. Are they...are they headed for Cradle?! I have a feeling this will turn out to be a catastrophe..." I said, reacting in shock to the transmission.

I then paged IS-M44 immediately.
"M44, we have an emergency." I said. "We've got more aliens inbound. I don't know what their intentions are, but they don't look good."

(I retconned a character name in the meantime when I started up this subplot with my own character. The only way I think I can get away with this is if the initial translation by KV-103 was incorrect. Also, they won't actually invade. Ignem will find out what they're doing after the Christmas minipause. As a side note, the transmission references the opening of Spiral Knights proper where the Skylark is destroyed.)

Character recap: KV-103 unit 2, code name 'Fallen King'

10,000 years ago before Skylark's fall, the Gremlin kind had reached the peak of its technological advancement, AI, robotic, medicine and even space exploration were within their grasp. The result was something beautiful, the Gremlin race lived in sheer prosperity and since forgotten their dark origin, as their guardian and architect, Tinkinzar watched them from the shadow, disguised as one of them. With the core's true nature all but forgotten, Gremlins looked into the sky, ready to conquer the galaxy.

But like the almirians before them, this golden age was not to last. Civil war eventually broke out, so devastating it eventually spread throughout cradle, turning many once bustling Gremlin cities into nothing but radioactive ruin. Technology from that age had since been slowly forgotten as the Gremlins eventually devolved into slavering barbarians in the fallout. Many Gremlin historians theorized the reason for this downfall, some attributed it to the machination of a rogue AI, other attributed it on the hubris of their fore-bearers. But Tinkinar knew better, someone from beyond the veil of space and time has been pulling strings this whole time.

After 5000 years, with no hope of recovery in sight and the Gremlin race on the verge of extinction, Tinkinzar stepped out from the shadow and claimed himself emperor. In order to give his forces an edge over the people who may oppose his rule, Tinkinzar got in contact with a group of technocrats, who have preserved some of the knowledge left from the golden age and started to build up an army of robotic warriors who will fight in his name. These are the earliest of Machinauts, fighting along side the iron claws and the dark fangs, they carved a bloody swathe through the clockwork. Uniting the lost Gremlin tribes in less than civil way, but everyone knew that this was the only chance Gremlin race had at redemption. And so, with blood and steel, the seven major tribes were united under the rule of Tinkinzar and was renamed, the Great Colony.

However, the rest of the clockwork was still in anarchy, the war to reclaim cradle has just begun...

FAQ about KV-103

Why is the Fallen King so heavily armored?
KV-103, along with the Ultranauts were designed to fight a very different type of war. Namely the unification war where Emperor Tinkinzar launched a great crusade to reconquer the clockwork after the fall of the golden age 5,000 years ago. This war pits Tinkinzar's army against many Gremlin tribes that still possessed highly advanced weaponries from the golden age: rail gun, plasma rifle and even graviton based weapons, normal machinauts were not up to the task and the engineers were left with two options:

A. Build a faster and stealthier machinaut

B. Build a stronger and tougher machinaut

Ultra Heavy Machinauts were the result of the latter options.

Why is KV-103 so xenophobic and is religious?
KV-103's neuro-AI was built based on an ancient and incomplete blueprints. Most of the knowledge needed to build a proper 'logic engine' were all but lost, even though the technocrats, the predecessors to the Torchbellow clan have tried their best to preserve the knowledge from the Golden Age. After 5000 years, those knowledge were gradually forgotten and mysticism were added to fill the gap, giving birth to a religion. The Machine God's fellowship, the Fallen King, and to an extend, most machinauts from that time were a part of it.

To make a long story short, the Torchbellow engineers, while know how to build a machinaut, didn't know exactly how and why the machinaut can function. The religion is a part of an intentional ploy to keep the machinauts in some sort of control, since their AI were to complex to be properly monitored, the Gremlin engineers could only cross their fingers and pray they don't go rogue. It is entirely possible that KV-103's xenophobia and hatred for traitors were originally designed as a way to make the machinaut stay loyal to the Torchbellow's cause.

Why does KV-103 use a chainsword and has such a massive fetish for melee combat?
The Mk III. 'Teeth of Cerberus' was a general purpose battle sword for the Ultra heavy machinauts, and general purpose means the chain sword was designed to fight all sorts of enemies that an Ultranaut could encounter in the varying landscape of the clockwork. The teeth of the blade are made from titanium laced with artificial diamond on the blades' edge, combine this with its fast rotation the Teeth of Cerberus can cut through flesh and sheets of metal easily. The only thing that might be able to stop the blade is another Ultranaut.

While KV-103 brag about honor in close combat, there are good reasons why an Ultranaut should be in melee. If KV-103 fight other lighter machinauts in ranged combat. There is a chance that the ranged weapons can penetrate the vulnerabilities in the armor, but if KV-103 goes into hand to hand range, no smaller machinaut can make a dent against its thick armor and here is where the Fallen King's superior strength and weight come into play. Punch, kick and tackling his way to victory.

"Maybe not five of them, but they're most likely scouts or explorers for a larger force. Ideally we'll be able to live and let live. If we can establish contact, I'll warn them about the surface laser and that'll be the end of it. If they do crash-land, we'll likely send another group to keep an eye on them- ideally a recon unit with a talent for diplomacy. They seem more reasonable than the Thaargan pirates, so I expect they'll be more prone to alliance than hostility, but we can't be too careful."

"Okay, take a right turn here... that's it, right there." You spy a simple log house, with a steel workshop haphazardly attached to its side. A few trees on the side house nesting Snipes, one of which stares down at you as you walk into the cabin.

"...it's quite the undertaking, Celloh." Boost says, "How far along is this project?"

"I've put about f-five hundred hours into the whole thing. The Song of Cradle... imagine! Little old me being the one to bring the world the lost, ancient Song of Cradle!"

"That would be impressive. And what's the legend say... oh!" Boost turns around upon realizing you've arrived inside. "Advance Force! Yes, IS-M44 let me know you were headed this way. Celloh's got repair kits in the basement... that is, assuming you'd like to allow the Advance Force a stay, Celloh?"

"Of course!" Celloh moves into the basement. His health's improved quite a bit, it seems.

Boost sits down on a chair, activating his Portable Alchemy Machine. "Going back here for some rest has been good for Celloh. There's not much Swarm presence here, and Celloh has quite the project to work on: he's working on a synthesized rendition of the Song of Cradle- ever hear of it? It's a song made in the olden days, and if the sources are to be believed, it was a masterpiece. But it's been lost to time, so Celloh is trying to piece it together from what sources exist about it."

"The whole thing is helping him get his mind off his troubles- and if the legend is true, it may be a huge opportunity for us all. Supposedly, should the song be played to perfection, the way to treasures from the yore of the worlds composing Cradle would be revealed... I imagine that would be good for fighting the Swarm."

Remember- the Vial's effect is added on to the weapon attack, so if you have a weapon that deals one status effect, try using a Vial Cell with something that matches well with it. I've been playing quite a bit of Final Fantasy: Record Keeper and have way, way, way too much time on my hands. Now, in Record Keeper, you can recruit a number of villains, like Gilgamesh, Golbez, and even total loons like Kefka, as playable characters. Well, this is embarrassing.

(I figured I'd go ahead and explain what is going on with Ignem and this subplot I started around her.

It's supposed to sort-of bridge Ignem's involvement here with a fictional universe (aka: extremely elaborate excuse for my weird art; it's also a total mess) I'm "writing" (how canon this is...is debatable here; on one hand, involvement here is entirely covered up in canon proper so it effectively "didn't happen" even though it...did, but on the other hand this feels like an outside-context thing and causes plenty of confusion and self-insert mayhem), but then I recently went and rewrote what happened there, meaning everything that Ignem has picked up is now outdated and most likely non-canon despite the characters still being around. Fortunately, the revision will likely eliminate most of the scattershot mess that was the original version and make it way more coherent.

And unfortunately, I have no idea how to go about correcting the problem of what this will do to Ignem's subplot, since I don't want the subplot to end on a very abrupt anticlimax. I could just render it a red herring and leave it as a mystery for the ages, with the plot revelations that were supposed to be in this subplot altered and moved so Ignem will find them out on her own, which in hindsight is what I should've done to begin with, but I'm sure there's another option I'll figure out.

So I accidentally wrote myself into a corner after looking back on what I wrote, realizing "this is a mess", and revising it without thinking of what this would do here. Whoops. Now I have to figure out how to go about fixing this unexpected side-effect. And speaking of messes, even Ignem is not immune - her personality and characterization is all over the place. To go about rectifying this, I'll be characterizing her as a somewhat cynical individual who is rather frustrated with trying to keep things from going from bad to worse.)

(Funny thing is, from the canon standpoint, this is the past, so then if we went further past, then...ow, my head. I think it's clear I made a mistake and promptly gave myself a headache trying to figure out the continuity.

As a sidenote, I almost made Ignem say hero instead of vigilante, which would probably be infinitely amusing if you've played Spec Ops: The Line. (Or horrifying.))

The respawn hologram shows a video...of Matikclocker and his buds. They seem to be labelled "PUSHER-N0N0", "CRUSHER-H3H3" and "BUSHER-D0D0" ((I am gonna call them Nono-1, Hehe-2 and Dodo-3 fyi. Nono is a female AI, the rest are male))

Me: "Da. Well, sort of anyway. These logs and walls of text get tiring to write and a good chunk of the info's outdated anyway."
